We had no experience at all when we purchased our 41 foot Carver. We practiced in an empty marina for a day and then just went for it. Took a five day trip to Annapolis and never looked back.
There are probably several dozen unscrupulous boat brokers out there right now, who are shocked and appalled at seeing a newbie boat buyer being given access to enough information to make an actual informed decision about his first boat purchase. Other than having to rebuild the entire sewage system, nothing else about my boat ownership experience was as disgusting as having to deal with some of the brokers I encountered. I have watched Ed and Lynn on youtube and they have come a long way with there boat ownership and knowledge of systems and maintenance. As a guy my self that maintains my own equipment it is nice to see Ed dive in a rectify problems on his own rather than throw money at the problem. You have a lot to learn being a boat owner and I wish you well? One last thought! I sure hope I wrote this to Gary Ed’s Cousin and not someone else. 😁🛫
The only real difference between Canada and the US when buying a boat, the numbers are higher in Canada. A 1997 Carver 40 is $89,997 US, currently available in my area. Though if looking at a boat in Canada I would recommend checking for haulout dates and times before submitting the offer, the facilities are quite busy so getting a time can be difficult at any particular facility. By checking all that are close to the boat you can see where timing will or won't work.
@@tryingnottosink9107 prices are always higher in Canada, 12-13% sales tax + 9.5% import tax plus local and federal fees. Here in BC it's 12% sales tax, on Ontario it is 13% sales tax, or is it 13.5%. The sales tax is depending on location and if the area has the HST or still has the separate Provincial and Federal taxes ( which oddly enough is less tax )
Yes, you pay the sales tax in the state where you live or will keep the boat. We bought in Florida and they gave us 60 days to leave the state or we would have had to pay Florida sales tax.
Polacks Unite!! All I've ever heard about Carver's with that they were junk floating campers. And your years of ownership did you ever have any issues with quality on your boat?
The worst thing that happened was the 25 year old charger died. The generator was acting up a bit (not always putting out AC) but that was mostly our fault for not running it for a couple years. Both these parts were made by third parties, not Carver. Other than that, we had no problems

When you mention having the boat "surveyed" , what is the official job title of that person and how would I find one? I like the thought of a professional doing a thorough inspection and 3rd party opinion without actually working for the buyer or seller.
Ken Hotaling I searched google for a “marine surveyor” close to that area. The guy was great as you will probably see in the next video. He had tons a great reviews online too
It is very common to have a Marine Surveyor inspect the boat prior to purchase. It is expected. They typically cost $800-$1200, depending on the boat, and includes in water, out of water and sea-trial.
If you want a go fast boat, gas is good. For a cruiser, diesel is better. Your cruising style is more important in the decision than anything else. I though it looked in good shape and should do well on the survey. I didn't see any obvious signs of abuse. Sea trials will let you make your decision.
