    Hi Capt Ed,,,,I've enjoyed watching your video's,,,,I hope you learned that you need to change your filter's more often,,,,,Don't run them as long as you have been. If you don't know about Diesel fuel is grows a fungus in your tank an d your lines both,,,,When you purchased the boat,,,the owner's hadn't been using the boat and it's a bad thing to let diesel sit without a treatment in the tank to keep it from growing the fungus,,,,so when you thought you got bad fuel,,,,it's more likely that the fungus was breaking up from you using the boat. The fungus cause's your filter's to become clog and will shut your engine's down or won't allow them to turn up the RPM"s that they should,,,,that's why it's important to always have clean filter's otherwise you are restricting the fuel going to your engine. You should notice now that you have been running your boat and have taken all these trips that most of that trash has broken loose in the tanks and came thru your lines. In some cases we've had to clean the entire tanks on boats,,,,filter all the fuel. I've also had boats I was transporting and the fuel was so bad that I had to change the filter's 3 times from Florida to Virginia that they were clogged. Just wanted to pass that along about keeping them changed. You do need to run the correct micron filter as well or your engine will be starving for fuel. Always,,,,always keep extra filter's on board,,,,,when one is clogged,,,,it will leave you dead in the water. Best Diesel Treatment to always keep in your tank is Bio-bor if you have learned by now,,,,always treat your tanks seeing your tanks are so large and diesel grows fungus quick,,,,faster in the summer months. Also,,,,,I have had to blowout lines as I seen you do as well. I have taken them off and the entire line was clogged shut with fungus,,,,,again from a boat not being used,,,,worst thing that can happen is letting one sit. I use to transport boats so I ran into this often when moving boat's for customer's buying them. Before I leave the dock,,,,I would go to the ship store and buy 5 new filter's for the trip after the years of experience of knowing how bad diesel fuel become's from boat's sitting. I've had so many people swear to me that they couldn't turn up their RPM's on their boat,,,,,,same problem always,,,,clogged filter restricting fuel flow,,,,,Your Racor system is everything to keeping your motor's running

      Thanks for all the tips. We always make sure we have at least four spare filters on board. We also have dual racors, so if one should become clogged we can switch to the other one immediately. I always make sure the spare racor has a brand new filter in it. I just started putting BioBor JF in the tanks. These are my first diesels and I did not know I had to do that until this year. The biggest problems we have had so far are small pieces of wood in the fuel, which clogged an engine fuel line one year and a generator line this year. I have been thinking of installing another filter between the tanks and the switching valves but have not got around to it yet.

    Ed, great videos. A helpful hint, you might start a maintenance log so you can always remember when you changed filters or even when and how much fuel you took aboard or emptied the black water tanks, etc.

    That's very important work you're doing, clean fuel is the secret to no aggravation. I feel for you w/ all of those little details. People have no idea about all of the micro issues a captain has to deal with, and everything is so time consuming, but oddly enjoyable as long as you've got the time to deal with it.

    10 micron primary filters are good if you know the fuel in your tanks is very clean. Otherwise use the 30 micron. Your secondary filters on the engine are probably 2 or 5 micron to protect the injection pump and injectors from debris. You have the vacuum gauges on top of the filters so you can monitor the performance of them and change over to the adjacent filter when they start to plug up.

    Arg. I’m as technical as they come and no way could I stand these engine rooms. I’d be taking every last system completely apart cleaning new hoses wires before I could sleep.

    I know a forwardlooking sounder is’nt cheap. I however installed an xtra plotter (Simrad 7 in) and a forwardlooking sonar on my old boat. The plotter with maps and the fwsonar was about 1500 Usd. It works fine for me as I’m more interested in what’ ahead of me in the water then what I’ve allready gone over (and by then it can be too late). The sonar can see 8x forward the actuall depth of which you travel in. 10 feet of depth gives you 80 feet of forward view. (Pls exc my poor English as I am from Sweden)

    I dont believe there is counter clockwise threads on those bottles. Common mistake when trying to thread upside down. im sure you figured that by now and looks like Bill pointed that out as well. Love your vids!!

    That transducer is a transom mount transducer, designed for small outboard boats. Probably only 600 watts. Hatteras made bulletproof hulls. The thickness of the hull will also attenuate the signal. If the hull is cored it wont work at all. I believe that hull is solid glass. We shall see what happens. You won't be able to see the bottom when the water gets a little deeper but, that's not the end of the world. If you are in 50 feet of water and lose the bottom even that Hatt wont run aground :)

      Yes, it is a solid core. I figured, for $130 it was worth a shot. We had nothing but a depth meter last year. We'll see.

    The threads on those plugs look like standard pipe thread and could possibly get plugs at any lowes,home depot or plumbing supply store

    One thing to your advantage is that the more you know about the boat before you have a problem, the easier it you'll be able to locate it and repair it. I would guess you have a transducer some were through the hull and just need to find it and figure how to get it working. You definitely don't want to run aground.

      he was turning it the wrong way but at that point it was useless since the plug was the wrong size if I remember right the raycore uses a 1/2 in plug and I believe the other is a 3/4

      Yes, I was. I noticed that when I edited the video and was wondering who else would notice. :-) Not that it mattered, I could tell it was too small for the hole and was spinning freely. It turned out to be multiple cracks in the bowl, making it a bigger hole.

      It's good to reverse thread
      until you feel the leading thread click. This helps you get centered in the hole and avoid cross-threading. But it looks like he was just backwards :-p

    Ed, that style of transducer can be used as you have but it's actual design is for an outboard or sterndrive vessel. That transducer mounted on the stern of your boat will not pick up anything due to the turbulence created by inboard propellors. Should you not be happy with the coverage or sensitivity as it is currently mounted you would need to either install a thru hull style transducer or epoxy a transducer to the hull making absolutely certain there are no air bubbles. Airmar is the best known producer of transducers and can be found on the web I believe they are still located in New Hampshire and have much better pricing than buying through a retail outlet. Really enjoy your videos as I travelled many of the same miles transporting my boat from Lauderdale back to Boston. Best of luck. PS you were screwing the plug on the bottom of the racor in the wrong direction!

      Thanks for the information. I figured it was only $130 and worth a shot. We are not much for fishing, so not sure how much we will use it. If we are unhappy with it, I'll check out the Airmar. I realized my foolishness with turning the plug during editing and decided to keep it in and endure the comments. :-) Not that it mattered, I could tell that the whole was too big, even turning it counter clockwise.

      That's part of what I love about your videos and the boat is new to you. You're learning this boat and doing things on it for the first time. That's what it's all about, most of us aren't mechanics but we have to figure out how to maintenance our boats. Then you do it again next time and look like a pro; it's an evolution and you're doing a great job!

    Love sonar phone as a backup, yes i used boatlife...temp works...vessel as yours foward sonar may be the better option

    Welcome back.
    Personally I would have gone with a thru haul transducer but it's a lot of work and you have to haul the boat out.
    Forget mounting it to the transom. It would only work at almost idle speeds and your bow will hit the rocks before it sees it. OK for slow speed fishing.
    You know a great thing about your boat. The engine room. The new boats go for ultra salon space at the price of engine room overhead. Really - an 80 foot yacht that you can't stand in the engine room.

      I guess we will see how it works out. Only a $130 investment so not much wasted if it does not perform. I agree about the engine rooms. Actually, I wish they had not put the center hallway inbetween the engines and left it one large room, with an additioanl staircase from the aft to access the master cabin. Some of the Defevers have that set up.

      You are like how I was. I did most of my own work and enjoyed the learning experience. I don't think yacht companies even think about maintenance and/or repair accessibility. They figure new buyers will just pay to have some other poor sap do the work.
      Oh, you bring up a good point. The few complaints that I have heard from Hatteras owners of boats around the age of yours in the split engine rooms and the odd DC voltages.
      A boat is a hole in the water in witch you pour money! :)
      It was worth every penny.

    Racor is basically pre-filter water fuel separator that's why the drains on the bottom and then fuel gets filtered again before it goes to the injectors with the filters on the side of the engine

      We also have additional water separators between the racors and the engine filters.

    I tried that style but did not like it. I opted for the bronze thru hull. But you need to pull the boat out to do that.

    Diesel fuel supports the growth of all kinds of nastys especially if there is a little water in it, might want to use a biocide additive when you fuel. When were your tanks cleaned out last? Do your tanks have clean outs? Something you might add to you 'to do' list, there are companies that do this.

      Commercial operators often use a 'day tank', a tank large enough to run for a day or maybe even just a couple of watches (8 hours), this tank is clean to begin with and is filled with filtered fuel thus assuring the engines are drawing clean fuel. What often happens to pleasure boats that don't run a lot of fuel through the system thus keeping it 'fresh' is that they get into a seaway and things get shaken up so a tank that was clean is no longer clean until it has some time to settle. This is a good way to monitor fuel use but you have to keep the tank filled and filled before you go through a bumpy inlet or have some upcoming weather while at sea. by the way, airplane operators use a biocide in their fuel (jet fuel isn't much different than diesel) as they have a problem with this as well. Since you have multiple tanks, designate one as the 'day tank', fuel into the others, especially if you are getting fuel from a 'strange' source and top off the day tank with filtered fuel from the others as needed. You probably could use 30 microns on the other tanks, then a 10 on the day and then whatever the engine maker wants on the engine. If you are standing for any length of time drain the day tank and refill just before you leave.

    As a boatyard tech a 30 micron racor filter is perfect for an 8v92 Detroit.

    You also might want to keep those plastic parts. If you put a small v in the crack line on the outside of the plastic item. Then use some two part epoxy to fix the crack. This might help. I have used this technique before. Only if you v the crack. That mean open the crack from the outside a very small ammount and not going all the way through. A good two part epoxy might be able to help.

    Just saw this video. Don't know if you noticed but it appeared that when you were trying to instal the plastic plug in the bottom of the racor filter.....unless it is reverse threads...it appeared you were screwing it in backwards. Maybe I'm wrong but look at your video again. Good luck.

    Maintanace on a boat and yachts we always said it stood for BOAT BUST OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND!! Lmao I shouldnt laugh i build and drag race cars for my living, I literally ordered 4 machine screws I should have chucked them up in the lathe but was in such a hurry so I, didnt even look,good enough 4 countersunk screws that had a special inververted hex cost me $112.00 I literally was cleaning out a procharger box and I got lucky II had an extra bracket and 8 screws and so I called Bill and he said man if it wasn't,anyone else. I said yeah you know Damnn well that your ass will make 10 times that off of me but I have already made some extras juts to have and a made an out of #8 bolt it tool couples hours I pray I never forget where I put them I put em in a big ole procharger box!! Anyways I know that was probably boring to most but thank goodness you can always stick a plug in that platic bowl and drain, the water!! That should be simple snd save a few hundred,too!! Keep it shiny side up and I hope the Mrs catches a fish! Btw I looked for the rest of the the other video on porno hub I guess you haven't,had a,chanca to up load it yet!! Lmao y'all be safe,I am serious if I,can do anything for you folk!!take care be safe and watch the sharks!!

      I am always amazed at how much more parts cost for boats. I just ordered two stators for our head pumps. A lousy piece of rubber that costs $90 each. We are fortunate in that we have a lot of spare parts. Lyn took the time to create an inventory and location list of everything.

    The 30 micron parker filters should be fine you have other filters after the racors that filter the fuel again before the fuel goes to the injectors. Good to see you guys made it through tax season. Hope to see more videos soon. Have a great week. God Bless!!!

      I believe that the 30 mic is the first filter and you should have a 10 as a second filter just before the pump. Also I believe that the CG has rule against the glass bottom racors due to the danger of a fuel fire in the engine room. the glass bottom was nice since you can see if there is water or krap in there. I think the comment on the transducer was right, this low power unit won't have a strong ping or reception with your bulletproof hull. It might work in shallow water and at low speed.

    I'm surprised the Raycor filters don't call for the sediment bowls to be replaced at service time. They are made of glass on a lot of fuel systems, as that plastic is known to get brittle with exposure to fuel, ultra violet and even Ozone normally present in the atmosphere. You may be causing your own problems down the road. That previous owner had the extra bowl on hand for a reason. Just be careful working around them. They will degrade with time. Just the nature of that material.

      I find that the drain hole gets clogged easily, so I remove the bowls and clean them when I see sediment. It is just 4 nuts. It gives me a good opportunity to inspect the condition.

      We like it. It is not perfect and loses signal sometimes when there is turbulence or very deep water, but it suits our purposes just fine. A professional fisherman may find it lacking.

      I hear Furuno is top of the line. Unfortunately, ours are older. I will not get rid of them, they are great back ups and we also use them for radar.

    After 2 years of using the sonar phone mounted inside the bilge rather then on the stern what are your current thoughts? Does it work? Are you still using it?

      We use it all the time. It works fine for us. We are no big into fishing and really only use it to monitor the bottom.

    Is diesel fuel normally full of sludge or is the sludge coming from your tanks?

      I do not think we have sludge in the tanks. We cruised over 3000 miles last year and did not have to change the racors. Other than that wood chip that caused us problems off the Keys, our fuel has been clean.

    I had the same unit and it lasted about two trips until the first rope I hooked it was gone,torn right off the stern waste of money they should have a better transducer thru hull type cause this isn’t a good sullution

      Trying Not To Sink looks like might be some sort of crankcase ventilation system, which would be great if it was. Keeping fresh air in the crankcase instead of blowby gases greatly increases oil life

    We have raymarine gear. I see what you are coming from with the tablets. I would suggest if you can financially getting a raymarine (or other brands). They have a robust gps antenna and their sole purpose is marine electronics, not entrainment.

      If one of these tablets ever break we plan to get a dedicated system. Something that will work with our auto-pilot.

    Washing fuel filter casings with water? AN absolute No No. You will never be able to completely remove the water, so inevitably some moisture will enter the fuel. Better avoid that. Better wash them with some gasoline/kerosene and dry them with a rug. Check the engine manuals for the right type of filters. That will be the safest you can be. Noticed you fitted the o-rings completely dry. A touch of grease to lubricate the o-rings just before you fit them is always advisable .

    Water is the enemy of diesel fuel systems. You never wash things out with water even if you let them dry. Never.
    And where is all the crud coming from ? Your fuel supplier should have a filter on their pump lines. Check next time you fill up. If so, that crud is coming from your tanks... are your tanks fiberglass and built into the hull ?
    How many hours are on those 8V92s ? Do you change oil in the drive boxes ?

      We believe we got bad fuel at a marina. We are avoiding them from now on. The tanks are fiberglass and built into the hull. the 8v92s have 3000 hours on each. We have not changed the oil in the drive boxes yet, but plan to this winter.

      @@tryingnottosink9107 I don't think you are getting bad fuel from the marina. Marinas filter their fuel at the pump. I think your tank has a leak or you are getting debris in the tank air vent somehow. I'm guessing the later. How else would wood get into your tank ? It wasn't from the marina hose.
      Those engines are low hours for the age. Extremely low hours.
      Did the previous owners leave you the service log for the boat ?

      The tanks are not leaking and the air vent is very high off the water line. But I guess that is possible. The reason we though we had bad fuel is that a day after getting fuel from this particular marina our racors were so dirty i had to take them apart and clean them. I had just cleaned a couple of running hours prior. It could have been a fluke, but I usually go a thousand miles before I need to even consider draining my racors, let alone taking them apart to clean out debris.
      Yes, the hours are very low. And 400 of them are from us in the past year and a half. I was actually concerned that they did not get enough use, but the engines turned out to be fine, other than eating a quart of oil every 15 hours, the run great. The previous owners left their service receipts for about the last ten years. Just some routine stuff, preventative maintenance and cosmetics.

    Why not just break down and buy a sonar, and AIS. It's just being frugal with your and others safety! You get what you pay for... With emphasis on paying for it. More ways than one. Pay 4 in beginning b4 needing, or pay 4 after in fear and regret

      We do not fish much, so this sonar is more than adequate. AIS is on the list for this year.
