- On August 10th, 2020, my wife (Brooke Porter) went to Grimes, Iowa to pick up something from Facebook marketplace. She was not aware of the incoming storm. Our dual dash cam picked up what happened. Thankfully, just a few scratches, broken glasses and a lost stuffed animal. Both the mother and child are incredible. The parents raised a brave and smart young boy and the mother herself to have the ability to delegate and trust her son in such a stressful situation. All around incredible.

Dereceos are some of the most evil storms I have encountered. The sideways rain is so scary. Glad she and family got to safety.

living in Iowa, they've probably already seen and been through at least a couple tornadoes. LOL It's a fact of life in that part of the US. So I'm guessing that's part of why they were not too fazed. LOL

K M i think is the little girl in the car, who started crying.
The Illinois derecho went through my hometown last June while I was at work. During the middle of it, an EF2 tornado passed about 150 yards from my house. I was desperately trying to call/text/messenger my wife to get the kids into the storage room under the stairs in my basement but the cell towers were all messed up. I saw the rotation on the radar scope app right over my home. We had a 4 foot around pin oak fall inches from my house. The whole area was a total mess. More than 100k people were without power in our county alone. There were reports of 100mph wind gusts. I feel for this family because I know my kids were equally afraid and they were in a basement. You are a good mom. You kept your cool and did what you had to do.
This is how me and my 6 year old are. I hope if things ever get this real I can still count on her like this! Mind blowing. Glad you guys are okay! That tornado was scary, I'd be crying too, buddy in the back!

This video truly shows me how crying is anything but helpful in these situations. No shade at the kid, given he's just a kid but just an observation on how much more tense I got while watching when the child started crying.

She should know, not because she is an adult but because she's likely to have more experience understanding weather conditions and safety. Although she panic'd at least she didn't visibly freak out.

I think in that situation, EVERY one of us would have that moment! She easily could've freaked out, but she stayed calm, her son stayed calm, she got her kids to safety! Bottom line- she's not a storm expert- she doesn't study storm patterns. She made a quick turn around, her son guided her to a shelter, kids are safe!! So anyone critiquing her strength, or critical thinking, you've better been in that situation with 5 or six kids in the car

Mom wow you remained calmed even when kid cried out loud. Also trusting on your child knowing they make a clear decisions. Trust me at the end of the day y'all like omg what a work with our kids but is worth at the end. Being independent making their own decisions.

She, it was the 6 year old, youngest that was crying.
I was in a very similar situation with my wife and infant years back. Sirens started, radio stations died, looking for any structure for cover as visibility quickly neared zero, I parked my truck on the side walk near the door of a Khol's. I used the drivers side of my truck as wind block for the glass doors of the store. Nobody gave me any grief for it. The staff welcomed us and several more in just as hail from a tornado started.
Good call by mum to not panic once she saw the tornado, safely back up then turn around. It's extremely rare for tornados to double back on themselves or turn 90 degrees towards you. So really well done.
i just want to applaud this mother for staying calm for her children even as they panicked. she involves them and allows them a voice in the face of danger and she seems to be a great mom. i hope her and her babies are thriving.

These storms are no joke. My husband and I rode out a derecho in our basement in 2006. When I went to work the next morning I couldn't believe all of the damage. The NWS recorded hundreds of microbursts, downbursts and "gust-nadoes" (mini wannabe tornadoes). It was the weirdest storm I had ever been through.
Impressive family and amazing situational awareness! The calm steadiness of the driver and passengers helped them avoid tragedy

I've never stood in 100mph wind before, but I found it amazing that you could see the mom trying to resist the wind force at 2:41. Mother nature is simply amazing.

The kid in the passenger seat was the hero of that video! I love how the mom was asking the kid what she should do.
And the boy in the back seat is just as brave as the one in the front he grabbed his sister's hand when they got out and ran with her instead of leaving her behind

When this storm happened i was outside picking tomatoes on a sunny day and literally within 5 minutes the sky turned BLACK the wind started blowing and my neighbors were rushing to get their dogs inside, i went inside with my tomatoes and the storm got really bad. It was raining sideways and hailing with intense wind, we lost a pine tree and our oak trees lost so many leaves it looked like fall time in August. Even to this day you'll still find damage from the deraco, it caused really bad tree damage and destroyed grain bins.
That momma did a good job at getting those youngins' to safety. And that boy sure did a good job at keeping mama calm.

Kids in car: So the storm is coming from the east, southeast as 50 miles per hour. We should be able to outrun it.

PARADOX I was actually in this tornado/ inland hurricane and it was scary as hell. The fact that someone had to comment on the way that the mother was driving in the case of stress/ and danger is a little rude in my opinion

My wife was at chic fil a with my 2 year old son when this came through cedar rapids and I was at work. She had to run inside like you guys did with my son. Craziest thing that has ever happened in Iowa. I could barely get to them after the storm with all the powerlines, trees and debris on the roads. Pretty scary.
The last kid could not get out cause the wind kept the door closing and change doors quickly no one pointed that out good for him to

I remember when I was much younger and lived in Kentucky, it was my birthday and we were going out to dinner. All of a sudden a huge storm hit, and then a tornado very quickly afterwards touched down near us and was barreling towards us. My mom was the one driving, and one thing about my mom, she’s a total badass, and she’s an amazing driver. My mom didn’t even have time to turn around before the tornado was on top of us. And being the badass she is, she stayed calm and collected, and drove right through that sucker as fast as she could. Thankfully it wasn’t an extremely strong tornado, but boy was it scary. After we had gotten a fairly safe distance from it, I remember my mom just sighing in relief. We ended up still going to dinner that day.
Can’t even play shotgun with this family anymore. Kid in front seat will forever hold that throne. Mind as well etch his name on the front seat now

That moms ability to stay calm in this situation is something I really respect
The boy in the front was so so brave and calming his mum, I will always respect this boy, but I could hear the other kid crying which made me worry for the family and what was going on, but they did a very good job they were nice and calm in what seemed like a very scary and stressful situation

I love how the people were leaving the store like, "What the hell is wrong with this crazy lady and her crying ass kids?!", and 5 seconds later was like, " OHHHHH!" 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♀️🏃♀️
I was manager on duty in a store when this storm hit, and people looked at me like I was crazy when I directed everyone to proceed to the back of the store, away from all the front windows.... until the lights started flickering, the power cut, and the roof and windows were rattling. I couldn't believe how oblivious people were to this approaching storm. Everyone was taken by surprise. They thought maybe we'd get a light rain. I had been monitoring it for a couple of hours though and saw that it would be a big one.
edit: The tornado siren started going off, and a lady impatiently asked for my help to get a balloon bouquet. I looked at her like she was nuts.

I don't know why but I love this whole family. The mom moving quickly without hesitation, waiting until all her babies got in the building. the maturity and intelligence of the older boy in the front seat to keep his mom calm, and the sister who kept the crying child under control. I don't blame the kid for crying at al. Heck id freak out so bad in this situation lol. but they all moved quick. thank god for the building being there.
this mother acted perfectly, calmed her children at the right time and kept everyone safe ... maternal survival instinct has been turned on!
