What Do Progressive Christians Believe?

  • When I started to dig deep into progressive Christianity, one of the things I discovered is that it is very difficult to define. And the reason progressive Christianity is really difficult to define is that it is not characterized by what you believe. Quite the opposite of historical Christianity.

There is human nature, what Paul called the carnal mind and Jesus called the world. There is what Paul called the Christ mind. Would it be different from the inspirations of the Holy Spirit or is it all one? John 17.20-23 If it is all one, is the world an illusion? Judge not by appearance but judge by righteous judgment.

I can't help but think of "for such a time as this." Alisa, your ministry and boldness for speaking the truth is beyond encouraging. I never imagined myself, being a 34 year old mother having to search for CHURCHES that are grounded and have a hunger to read God's word. I have seen so many of these progressive subtleties as my husband and I seek out a church for our family and kids. I praise the Lord for His eyesight and discernment to see these lies. From the outside, they certainly are enticing, popular and draw the crowds! May we continue to live out lives as Christ did, showing the perfect balance of truth and love!! I am curious about your perspective on Mark Zuckerberg courting Church leaders and some mega churche for the Meta verse. This troubles me a lot, I view it as sacrilegious, commodifying our most cherished beliefs. I have heard many secular pundits, and non Christians criticizing this move, (Russel Brand aptly calls it the colonization of our consciousness). But Christians seem to be eerily silent, or endorse this abomination. I think this both an interesting and poinant topic for debate. Thank you for all that you do.

@@freshliving4199 To be honest I am still trying to figure that out. I think obeying the tenets of Jesus Christ as it is laid out in the Gospels and New Testament, faith and belief that the only way to god is through Jesus Christ. When I was Baptized, ( I am recovering addict), my past sins died on cross. I 'm reading the Bible daily, read the New Testament a few times making my way through the old, read so far from Genesis to Psalms. I attend church, my wife and I volunteer there, ( my Church, The Vineyards in Cambridge Ontario, has a program called Urban Hope that Caters to the homeless, though it is getting harder due to COVID restrictions ).
But I digress, I am still a new Christian, and to be honest I am still finding my way, I sometimes struggle, because I have to change the habits of thinking from a lifetime of agnosticism. But I also believe a part of you has to die to be reborn Sorry for being long winded, I am trying to answer your question the best I can.
The problem I have with the Meta verse, and church' s being on board, aside from eliminating human contact, maybe augments Alisa Childers concerns about Progressive Christianity, that it will dilute and twist the gospels, in order to appeal to new converts. It already has distorted the meaning of the church, moving it into the digital realm . I am trying to determine whether my concerns have merit.

I encountered some of this in an adult Sunday School class I was teaching. I was teaching about God's plan for marriage and families. I brought up why biological gender was so important. I also discussed how society acceptance of common-law marriage and same sex marriage were lies Satan told us. Some class members brought up the LGBTQ and common law issue and how we are not to judge others. So okay, we are not to judge others. However there still needs to be a standard of right and wrong. My response was the class is about studying what God says in scripture and not what is politically correct.

One thing I have noticed about the progressive movement....the first thing they do is completely get rid of any type of corporate Bible study (sunday school, small group studies, etc.). If the people are not studying the Bible then they can convince the people of anything they want them to believe. If no one is studying their Bible, then no one can "argue" with them when it comes to their "teachings." It's so sad to me. I miss the old days of Sunday school, Sunday night corporate worship and Bible study, wednesday night Bible study. The mega church model is: one service on sunday mornings...and they prefer that to be online. We must have each other. We must do life together. We need to worship together and study together.

AMEN sister Childers Progressive Christianity isn't Christianity. This has nothing to do with the video but please listen if you want to otherwise leave it alone and ignore it. Hello my name is Justin and I'm a fellow Christian and Apologist but I'm also a college student. I'm not a closed minded Theist as I have nothing against Atheists or unbelievers as I speak to them often to understand their reasons for unbelief but we as Christians are convinced of God's Existence due to many real factors). I'm not trying to convert anyone or convince anyone to become Christians as that's The Holy Spirit's job to help people believe but only explain why I believe in Jesus Christ. There's actually evidence of God's Existence in Christianity. First of all there's proof that Jesus of Nazareth existed in history since the writings of Tacitus, Josephus Flavius, Pliny the younger and other historical documents prove that He was living two thousand years ago that even scholars both religious and Atheists agree with historically speaking but not that He's The Divine Son of God because obviously they don't.
I'm going to give you historical and archeological evidence for God's Existence as The Scriptures have prophecies that predate the events recorded in them by several millennia including Matthew, Hosea and Zechariah which prophesy accurately of the people of Israel becoming a nation again after over 1900 years of being scattered around the nations since the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem in 70 A.D. spoken of by Christ in Matthew 23:29-24:3 and returning to their homeland after The Holocaust with Jerusalem as their capital in 1948 exactly as Jesus The Christ said. The prophets including Daniel spoke of the time where several world empires would arise and fall including the Babylonian kingdom, Medes and Persians, Roman Empire, and Saladin and the Muslims which went in consecutive order for the past few millennia. The people of Israel becoming a nation after The Holocaust in 1948 (ironically the melting point of gold as God compares Israel to gold that's tested in fire in Zechariah 13:8 and Jeremiah 16:15) exactly how Jesus The Christ said would happen since God us everything to come in The Scriptures and not just because people were working towards as Atheists claim which are impossible for any regular man to predict.
Just before anyone says Christianity is a white man's religion made to oppress blacks during slavery you obviously aren't aware that the first Christians were Jews in The Middle East and that Christianity just like any religion can be used by evil and corrupt people to oppress others but you forget that the first Abolitionists/Civil Rights activists were Christians who sought to abolish slavery, racism, segregation, injustice and prejudice throughout American history. Jesus The Christ loves you enough not to give you what we all deserve which is God's Wrath by His Own Blood. Charles Darwin didn't originally come up with The Theory of Evolution over 200 years ago as it is mentioned in the writings of Ancient Greeks who believed in Demons that gave knowledge to philosophers.
Evolution makes no sense when nothing has evolved after thousands of years of human history and supposedly the first creature came from primordial sludge several millions of years
ago funny how they won't believe that God an Eternal Almighty Spirit Being created us from the Earth) which came from a supermassive expansion of matter at high temperature that inexplicably created everything in the known universe that supposedly came from nothing billions of years ago. How did the organs evolve before there were bones, skin, substance and how did any creatures see before eyes evolved? I've studied evolution and abiogenesis in the past and read Darwin's " Origin of The Species" I've studied evolution and abiogenesis in the past and read Darwin's " Origin of The Species" and I'm not convinced of but not macro or micro Evolution because there's no evidence of it nor clear observable examples of it where living creatures evolve into other kinds of species plus the fact that fossils don't show evidence of evolution and genetic entropy rules out evolution. The question begs how did two genders evolve from a common ancestor with a perfectly hospitable and sustainable environment with breathable oxygen and resources to survive on inexplicably? Atheists have the burden of proof to explain how everything came to be and why our existence is possible without the Existence of God from an godless perspective just as Christians have to provide evidence of God's Existence and the validity of His Word.
Evolution requires life to already exist in order to take any effect in living organisms so it doesn't account for the existence of Life and reality. Also evolution is impossible because it goes against The Law of entropy and the second Law of thermodynamics because evolution makes things better whereas nothing continues to get better but decays and turns to absolute destruction in the end. Mark Ridley an Evolutionist said "No evolutionist whether gradualist or punctuationist uses the fossil record as evidence in favor of The Theory of Darwinian Evolution as opposed to special Creation". God's Existence is made perfectly known and observable in the universe as demonstrated in His Handiwork in the intelligently designed manner that Creation was made, human consciences and consciousness historical and archaeological evidence of God's Word being valid history, fulfillment of Bible Prophecies God in His Holiness and Righteousness could give us what we deserve in Hell for our since but He's merciful to give us free will to choose to accept or reject His gift of salvation by grace through faith in His Son Jesus. I don't mean this is any condescending manner but if you'd like to discuss The Scriptures with me or have me listen to your view on anything my instagram account is Savage Christian Kombatant.

"We have always gone to the Bible to settle our disagreements..." No, we havent. Its called theological debate and its been a thing in Christianity before the Bible was canonized. Theological debate was the process of canonization of the Bible. The reason disagreements exist is bc the Bible needs to be interpreted. How do u explain that the Statement of Biblical inerrancy was written in 1978 if we were united on the Bible since the beginning? This statement of inerrancy is a reaction by the few to those they disagreed with about homosexuality and the Bible. Really, do u think that knowing that both male and female bodies are pivotal in reproduction, common sense now, has zero baring on our understanding of God and creation? The fact that we know the earth revolves around the sun, or that earthquakes happens bc of moving tatonic plates has no baring on how we think about God? Of course it does. Even in the Bible, we see the "progression" of theology. At one point circumcision was required the most imprtant identifying marker to the faithul but later paul says it is not longer. Things changed. Morality needs context and the context of Abraham or even Jesus was very different. Imagine morality in the time of slavery "treat ur slaves well..." Great! But today we would see that as immoral as no one should own other people. We need to move forward in our thinking or at least vet the true universal wisdoms like love ur neighbor, heal the sick, etc. How ironic that if she applied her logic to the Bible, she would be prohibited from teaching the Bible. Progressive Christianity is hard to define bc you are trying to measure it with ur conservative logic. Conservative Christianity is all about answers. The Bible is a book that give u answers. Progressive Christianity is about being okay to not have the answers. The Bible's purpose is to makes us ask deeper questions. This is how scripture was used from the beginning. Jesus is both God and human is not supposed settle an argument rather make us wonder what that means that Jesus lived among us.

The true Church teaches that Jesus is the living word of God, not the Bible. Our authorities are Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Church or “ the body”. The Bible is a wonderful tool given to the Church by our Apostles and Church Fathers to teach us truth.

If the Bible is the infallible, inerrant , literal , unchanging word of God, then why did we Christians remind God that he was wrong on so many issues, such as Slavery, women, Homosexuality, creation and the natural world? Did God change his mind on these issues or did we humans get God wrong ? But then if god is eternal and unchanging and all knowing why did he get it wrong in the first place? Now did you realize that all what we keep reading about god in holy books along with every idea about God that humans come up with are all human projections of God and never who God really is? Even if there happens to be a God somewhere out in the unknown, how would any fallible, mortal human know who this God is, what he looks like, what he thinks or speaks? That's why Jesus told people to look within themselves to understand God instead of looking out words. ' The kingdom of God is within you' ( Luke 17/20/21)
The God Christian fundamentalists have created for themselves is a God who lives above the clouds, while keeping a watch on his flock on earth. This god dishes out rewards and punishments to people as well. Wonder how many young thinking Christians in these times would actually believe in such a God? I live in an Asian Country and read a book written by a young lady Megan Phelps-Roper who escaped from a very fundamentalist Church group in the US. Her grandfather Fred Phelps who founded the Church was a die hard fundamentalist who believed that God created the world in 6 days and that Homosexuals are cursed by God and should be killed. In his old age he had repented and changed his mind on the Bible, Christianity and even God. In a nursing home on a bed he had confessed to his family that he had been wrong about God all his life.
Any religion or ideology that takes a fundamentalist approach towards what they believe has no future because its never going to last very long.

When did "Christians remind God that he was wrong on so many issues"? Why would you think anything has changed or that God got anything wrong?
_Now did you realize that all what we keep reading about god in holy books along with every idea about God that humans come up with are all human projections of God and never who God really is? [...] That's why Jesus told people to look within themselves to understand God instead of looking out words. ' The kingdom of God is within you' ( Luke 17/20/21)_
Why would you contend that looking within yourself is the means to circumvent projection? Human projection is the ONLY thing you'll find there. Quit twisting the meanings of late 16th, early 17th century English. Modern translation: "for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you." (ESV) The kingdom of God had already come and was standing directly before them.
Not only does Jesus fully endorse the sovereignty of God, he references the Old Testament scripture as the authority backing it:
And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.'" Luke 4:8
If scripture is to be discarded as irrelevant to whatever your inner whims are, what's the point of quoting it with an implicit appeal to authority?
_Even if there happens to be a God somewhere out in the unknown, how would any fallible, mortal human know who this God is, what he looks like, what he thinks or speaks?_
Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves." John 14:9-11
_The God Christian fundamentalists [...] Any religion or ideology that takes a fundamentalist approach towards what they believe has no future because its never going to last very long._
This is just an example of the informal fallacy of "guilt by association". It doesn't bolster the conclusion you're positing at all. Furthermore, 2000 years of history kinda works against you.

Dear sister you are making a major false statement on how progressive Christian, so called, see the Bible. They in fact are more Orthodox in understanding of Christ centred spirituality and what the Bible is than Evangelical fundamentalism. The latter derives authority from the book as ideology like the sincere and zealous Pharisees. Whereas the former draws authority from the Son within courtesy of the INSPIRED written word which had led the reader to discover that is " born again or more correctly said above. I will Labour no further but suffice to say if you put as much effort in seeking the genuine Christian Gospel as the early church fathers viewed it ( Orthodoxy) as that of defending Roman Catholic/ Protestant TRADITION...your heart would love the Father/Jesus even more so. Please refrain from attacking what you never had fully understood, and study the original Hebrew and Greek languages and discover how Mediaeval and later Protestant bias affected our English Bible translations from not these original languages but from Latin. Embracing Christianity in mid life I was once a Fundamentalist but slowly in reading my Bible I began to see a different way of " seeing." Thank God for His unrelenting love grace and mercy that from being labelled a heretic by my brethren who I loved I was led to truths espoused by Eastern Orthodoxy (Apokatastasis Thesis etc) and names such as Brad Jerzak, Richard Rohr, Paul Young, Brian McLaren etc etc. As the two desciples on the road to Emmaus my heart burnt at the verification of that I knew in the Spirit but words had failed me. Both Jesus and Paul after his conversion used Scripture to reveal God's character and true nature of unrelenting LOVE to reconcile ALL of His creation. Yes ALL of mankind if sadly so many many have to be restored by God's refining fire for complete restoration into His image. If not incrementally in this age than painfully through regret of having taken His name in vain. Appollogies for my long comment. Maranatha and may you discover Jesus as Paul did as expressed in Galatians 1/16. ❤️

As a progressive Christian I refuse to believe that the Bible is the word of God. To me it's an ancient set of writings about a tribe of Semitic people who went under the name Israelites, how they lived, what they believed and how they tried to understand the concept of God, life and the universe. To these ancient people God was a being who created the world in 6 days, who separated the sea in order to save his chosen people who were the Israelites while drowning the entire Egyptian army who were their oppressors. They believed that the earth is flat and that the sun revolves around the earth. They also believed that women were inferior to men, and that from all the other tribal deities who were worshipped in those regions of the world, that their tribal deity who happened to be Jehovah was the only true God, and that anyone who worshipped other God's deserved to be killed.
Jesus then came along and reminded people who God really is. He told us of an universal God of abiding love and compassion towards all. He showed people what it means to be truly human. He reminded us that we all are children of God and that any attempt to degrade another human being means you degrade and violate the holy God.
Yes I am honored to be calling myself a progressive Christian. Progressive Christianity “affirms that the teachings of Jesus provide but one of many ways to experience the Sacredness and Oneness of life.” For those who have been taught repeatedly that Jesus is the only way, such a statement is very disorienting. Progressive Christianity “seeks community that is inclusive of ALL people.” For those who have been encouraged to create community exclusively with people who look and sound like them, this statement invites variety that creates confusion and possible fear. Progressive Christianity “believes there is more value in questioning than in absolutes.” For those who have taken comfort in predictability and answers, this statement evokes anxiety and perceived chaos.
So, Progressive Christianity opens the doors to disorientation, confusion and chaos? Well, yes! In some ways… And this feels very messy for the parts of us that really prefer comfort, ease, and order. Progressive Christianity recognizes that being human on this living planet means experiencing diversity, death, and fear while learning to find meaning, love and friendship amidst it all. Is Progressive Christianity dangerous? Most definitely if a Christian doesn’t want to recognize their participation in a system that has allowed certain humans to thrive at the expense of other humans and more-than-humans.
    Regards and God bless

_Jesus then came along and reminded people who God really is. He told us of an universal God of abiding love and compassion towards all._
True, though not in the way you're implying. He did not claim the Old Testament scripts were wrong or otherwise irrelevant. He assigned it upmost authority:
"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:17-19
_He showed people what it means to be truly human._
He came to show that being truly human is not enough to set you free:
"I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness." John 12:46
"For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world-to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice." John 18:37
_He reminded us that we all are children of God and that any attempt to degrade another human being means you degrade and violate the holy God._
We do all bear the image of God, and should honor one another. (Imago Dei) However, that does not imply that we are all children of God:
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but he sent me. Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word. You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me." John 8:42-45
_Yes I am honored to be calling myself a progressive Christian. Progressive Christianity “affirms that the teachings of Jesus provide but one of many ways to experience the Sacredness and Oneness of life.” For those who have been taught repeatedly that Jesus is the only way, such a statement is very disorienting. Progressive Christianity “seeks community that is inclusive of ALL people.”_
For one who affirms the teachings of Jesus, I think you missed some parts:
"Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." John 14:6
"Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him." John 3:36
_Progressive Christianity “believes there is more value in questioning than in absolutes.”_
Indeed. The scriptures warn of this type, among many others: "always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth." 2 Timothy 3:7
_So, Progressive Christianity opens the doors to disorientation, confusion and chaos? Most definitely if a Christian doesn’t want to recognize their participation in a system that has allowed certain humans to thrive at the expense of other humans and more-than-humans._
The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power and false signs and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-12

Def: "Apologists are people involved in apologetics, a branch of theology concerned with the defense of the faith. An apologist hones his ability to defend the Christian faith by presenting proofs from the Bible, logic, and other empirical and intellectual sources."
The Book of Hebrews can be said to be the first apology of Christianity
