- I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a pair of Wyze Cam OG and OG Telephotos before launch from Wyze (THANK YOU!) so that I could bring you this review on launch day. The Wyze Cam OG is an excellent successor to the more expensive V3, with everything you need, and nothing you don't for an incredibly affordable budget Wireless IP camera.

Since my SEO is going to suffer already, here's a breakdown of how the new Wyze OG compares...
Zoom: Telephoto field-of-view (FOV) starts at exactly where maximum pinch-to-zoom stops on the iOS Wyze App. So if you are OK with that narrow of a FOV, the OG 3X is great for reading license plates, long distance identification. Indoors it’s not going to work unless you’re watching a fish bowl across the room :)
WiFi: Wireless performance of both the OG and OG 3X are outstanding - the best numbers I’ve ever seen from a Wyze device and easily 2.5x better than the V3 (~9 dBm). This equated to nearly double the outdoor range before signal loss.
Color: About as sharp as V3, but has the slight red color shift of the V2. Mahogany looked a little red, blues a little more green. It’s barely noticeable unless side by side, but it isn’t as color accurate as the V3/V3P. OG 3X has the same default color of the OG.
Compression: Still has the aggressive Wyze compression with 2 second interval key frames. This makes video playback look a little jumpy under a lot of motion, but overall the same compression quality as the V3.
Exposure: The OG 3X appears to be slightly lighter in most scenes by default. The OG is lighter than the V3 - and blows out highlights easier which is the opposite problem faced with the V3 Pro which started too dark before that first firmware update.
Price: Launch pricing of $19.99 is … insane. With 4 of these, SD cards (from Amazon), and tax - you’re out the door under $100 for a four camera outdoor rated security system with local storage.
Mount: The OG/OG3X use a turret mount with no position locking mechanism other than friction. It has a plastic wheel to lock the camera on the mount threads, but they are NOT 1/4-20 like many other devices and appear to be smaller. Uses a detachable two screw base which makes install easy.
Notifications: The best I’ve seen from a Wyze device. The OG notified of motion at 2.5 sections and the OG at 2.4. This is double the V3 notification speeds and 1/3 faster even than the V3 Pro.
App Opening / Startup Speed: The initial camera startup in the app is incredibly fast - under 2 seconds to fully connect and show an HD image from tap. The PIP and swapping OG pairs is good, though takes getting used to and you can’t turn off the slide out panel icon. From off to fully ready to view the OG is at least half the startup time of the V3.

@@TheNetGuythe older versions I Kno you can load rtsp on them to use as a web cam on PC. No idea about the newer 1s as I don't have them so I don't ever research. I'm now looking into the telephoto for long range zoom. I have v2 and v3s.

Thanks for the review. Am missing the magnetic base in both V3 pro and OG. Will there be an optional or aftermarket magnetic mount? Hot glue and small harbor freight magnets did not bond with the plastic. Magnets on a galvanized plate might hold better.
Jb weld will hold if not buy 3m heavy duty mounting tape. The stuff is crazy sticky
I bought the OG to replace a Wyze 3. I do NOT like it. It routinely misses events and only records for 12-13 seconds. I did all the troubleshooting and even called WYZE tech support. Went thru all that and updated firmware. I'm returning it and very disappointed.
It’s definitely a cheaper alternative, by almost half. They say it has the same sensor and faster processor - so let’s hope they figure it out.

Have seen a couple of cats, my dogs, when I am out front. And had a bee buzzing around right in front of it. It works very well. It even shows the neighbour's driveway, but only shows movement just past my own, which is very long. I highly recommend them.
I think I'm gonna use the OG to film my bird feeder and bird houses. Maybe add some solar panels to them. Hopefully they get good close up video because I'm going mount one right on the tray feeder so I can get good close Ups of the birds while feeding. Right now I'm using a
Eufy soalrcam S40 That's about 10' away from all the feeders as an overall Cam to view all of the feeders. My only concern with the Eufy S40 Is that I'm seeing a lot of them have water intrusion. I'm thinking I might just use the OG to view the whole area and then also use them also for close up individual feeders and houses. We live in Florida so we get lots of rain hoping these are water proof. Your thoughts

I didn’t know the 12 second clips were going away. Hopefully that means they’re going to try and offer a localized 2.5” drive solution like they teased before
We live in a city area, where chances of little vandals snatching away any such outdoor fixture is realistic, so placing a cam behind my window is the better option. The built-in spotlight on the Wyze cam OG however may cause glare from inner reflections of the glass. Is there a solution to minimise glare (assuming there are no other issues) on the OG when placed behind a window ?
well, i just wanna see whats going on outside my house specially at night, i think the OG is the one i need.
You seem to be aware of the non-adjustable, low bitrate, compression that plagues all wyze cams. Would you be able to bring more awareness to it in a video? People have been asking for a setting to adjust bitrate for years. I can only assume they refuse because it'll cause cause issues with their cloud storage solutions but it should work just fine for local starage.
Exactly. The heavy compression, low key frame rate, and low overall frame rate is disgusting for a local storage security solution.

Do you mean no more free 12-second clips after April 2023 (not 2022)? Because I'm still getting these with a 5-minute cool down on my V2s and V3s. And does this mean older cameras will suddenly stop providing the videos, or just any newer models bought after the date? Thanks
I should have been clearer. Camera models introduced after April 2022 - like the Pan V3, V3 Pro, and OG won’t have 12 second clips. My recommendation is always use the microsd card slot 👍
What camera would you recommend for harsh weather? Such as snowstorms and negative 50 degree winters? As is the place i live north dakota. The camera would be mounted underneath a patio but would still be in contact with the elements to an extent. Any thoughts? Thank you.
Wyza cameras are decent. I’ve had them now since they came out. Their customer service is very bad. Enough to make their cameras not worth it. I guarantee you there are more worth it ones out there after being a customer for so long I am switching over this year to another brand! Wyze cam is gonna keep charging a lot more for their services and not train their staff to be Able to do anything but read a lil script back and fourth

I love the detail and how much this cam can pick up especially license plates but should I go with the v3 pro with 2k quality or this?
I’m at a really tough call. The V3 pro is much sharper at 2K but the telephoto is equivalent to 9K

If you have a specific area that people drive or go through far away that you see the license plates or faces, the OG Telephoto will be sharper.

So, let me get this straight. Soon there will be no free 12-second recording? So when you click on "Events" on the bottom of the Wyze software's home screen, you will see nothing? But if you have an SD card in your camera (which I do), you will be able to scroll the timeline and see events that occurred? Great video, btw.
On new camera models after 4/2022 last year yes. Only grandfathered units OR those subscribed to cam plus. Same as blink and pretty much everyone else. Recording to the cloud costs them ongoing money.
That suck. Sooner that later Wyze will be just lime other money camera pits.

While I like the refocus back on camera's -- can we please get real support for all the smart home echo systems. Their stubborn approach to Homekit still baffles me.
Honestly I would love to see some UI changes on some past products... The only changes to the UI are the newer ones and I think that's a missed opportunity to simplify the app and make the experience better... It also needs a redesigned home screen in my opinion.
I think homekit integration is more difficult on the camera front vs. google & alexa. Probably why so few cameras actually support homekit. Wyze said the other day there is zero plan to support Homekit. I'm assuming they are waiting on Matter to, hopefully, solve the problem rather than devoting a lot of dev time towards it.
@@johnabel6792, I believe Wyze has a plan to update the UI for the other cameras. It was mentioned yesterday during their Zoom meeting rollout for the OG or on the OG AMA.

@@Alps7145 Fair but Matter doesn't solve the problem for them either. There is a difference between Apple Secure Video and just allowing Homekit to see the cameras. Homebridge has a pretty good plug-in that's figured this out....and still don't have native RTSP which is just about every IP camera on the market. They could charge me $5 more the camera for homekit support - fine.
While i love Wyze, the most frustrating issue i always run into with my 5 cameras is the Error Code: 90. I have very good wifi range at my house and this error l always seems to crap out the devices when i wish i had them working most

Great vids. Thank you. I got swapped the V3 for the new PAN 3 and it loses connectivity daily… not sure if I just go back to the v3 or replace with this since I have an old v2 also that will be EOL soon

@@TheNetGuy correct, the new Pan v3 is disconnected once again (error 90). I had a v3 in the same area, removed it and put the pan v3 even closer to my gateway. It loses connection at least 1 time per day and requires a reset. I love Wyze products,but this one needs to be patched, was released too soon and/or has lesser quality components than the regular v3 cam.
I can’t get it is the telephoto 3x zoom is fixed to 3x zoom and you can’t zoom out ?

10:10 i’m not sure where you got the idea that blink or bluerams removed the micro sd card slots on their products.
1. blink uses a sync module and never used sd cards. the newer sync module uses a usb flash drive provided by the user to be able to store footage locally in addition to their cloud offerings. their older sync module did not do this, so it some ways it is an improvement.
2. bluerams still uses micro sd cards on their current product line.
this review feels optimistically biased towards wyze as opposed to a more balanced review.
for example, the misinformation mentioned above about other companies doing away with microsd cards. the statement might be true but not the named examples he mentions.
and, for instance, some have noted that the new mounting system is not your standard quarter 20 threading used for tripods so other mounting options need another set of workarounds to mount it if the default mount does not work for you. this wasn’t mentioned.
the cons mentioned had a suggestive rebuttal like it is kindly questioning its validity as a con.
there is no rtsp option. your only two options are the mico sd card option and their cloud subscription. so if the sd card gets stolen and you didn’t pay for their subscription, you have no footage.
the sd card option also has the disadvantage now when they redesigned the interface. it takes a few more steps and the timeline is now vertical instead of horizontal to narrow into the footage timeframe. notifications are pictures and not a clip like how it was on cam plus lite.
there are other reviews out there which are more negative but i think an actual balanced review has yet to surface because the current reviews lean on either side of the fence. there are pros and cons and it depends on what works best for you, but folks got to do their own research to see if what the reviewers are saying are actually true and if the advantages they like are actually valid for your uses. having quarter second faster notification is rather insignificant to me than say keeping cam plus lite support and having a more compatible camera mounting option like the previous models.
Thanks for such a detailed comment. I have actually done sponsored shows for Blurams, and unlike Wyze, they did drop the MicroSD slot on their 2K outdoor amzn.to/3wVUbtg (*affiliated link earns commission*).
Having the MicroSD support and cloud notifications on such a low priced camera is better than nothing and/or blink. Blink requires you to buy a $25 add-on device just to record locally in your network and even those are questionable reliability/quality. If you view my Amazon store you’ll see I’ve been hands on with 90% of blink devices and many other manufacturers.
RTSP support is rare in the low end market and most cannot afford to give you both “the razor and blades for free”. Wyze is choosing to make it on Cam Plus, which I fully endorse. Most people should run both MicroSD and Cam Plus for complete coverage.
Ultimately to find a competitor that has an outdoor rated, microsd enabled camera, with 1/4-20 mounting, good Wi-Fi signal, spotlight, great app support, and more - you’re looking at $35+. That was the point of my video and review - the OG is the low price leader for this purpose and makes concessions where necessary to hit that. Ironically not removing the MicroSD option.
Personally I love the new Pan V3 and original V3 or V3 Pro for wireless and Reolink products are better for wired/POE. Blink has attractive solutions for battery powered needs and Blurams is probably second only to Wyze right now in their ability to make affordable IP cameras. They need to improve their app experience though 🤔

I just bought a OG to replace a V3 with a foggy lens and my signal strength on my OG is far less than my V3 I guess I got a lemon.
Do you have multiple access points? I’ve seen them train against one unit and when you go to finally install not attach to the closer unit it.
I thought of that... @@TheNetGuy so I set it up again in the location it was in thinking JUST that. But no change. I also placed it in another location where my V3 has really good signal and this one is showing -60 db signal and video is pausing and going all the time. I may just have a bad unit. I put in a ticket with Wyze on firday but no answer yet.

@@TheNetGuy yes... I and watched your video when it cam out so I didn't think range would be an issue with this camera at all. Generally Wyze support is good in the first year. I have had 3 V3s cameras fail outside for fog in the lens. I feel the V3s just are not really up to weather. Hopefully the OG will work better.
@@JosephDawson the only one I’ve really had a fog problem with is the Wyze cam outdoor, because it is battery powered, though it doesn’t have any heat, and the Pacific Northwest gets cold and moist. Perfect conditions for fog.

ve been a Wyze cam customer for about 4 years do not purchase the Wyze cam OG. It appears as if Wyze has forgotten where they came from, a great cam a great service will be no more again do not purchase the Wyze cam OG you do not get the same benefits from the original cam.....no Cam Plus Lite service 👎 and that sucks
What about speeds of AI notifications like person detection?
Same. They’ve started sending both and the first comes in as shown and the Ai comes right after with the image.
Do you still get thumbnails with the OG? The 12 seconds sometimes was useful but many times wasn't cutting off before the actual event. Having the thumbnail of what triggered the camera would still be useful. Do you get that with OG??
You get a still image for free, but no video recording. If you drop a MicroSD card in you have full control over your own storage.
@@TheNetGuy Thanks for actually responding. So many UA-camrs do not answer their messages. Yes, I've always used an SD card because the 12 seconds of cloud was always set up to fail in most cases so that they could sell their plus service. They even used to mark it as showing that the 12 seconds clip missed a car sliding down hill into a pool. This was then obvious to me why they would show you a pre-roll 12 seconds.
Can you swap the V3 magnetic base to the bottom threads of the base that comes with this camera? Also, it's probably two new but is there any reports about the SD card cover and water when you need to mount this upside down? I just had a V3 fail and that's the only point. I think it could have gotten in it as it was mounted underneath the gutter.
Regarding future products, I would love to see a Wyze Cam Outdoor V3

Off-topic, but that infinite zoom stuff you see in the movies *is* real now (5:03). Cue: Google's blog post "High Fidelity Image Generation Using Diffusion Models".
Would love to see it. At some point we’re making up bits that don’t exist like Topaz AI did. Kind of like the imagine enhancement that puts guns in peoples hands that done exist :) Partially why it’s not allowed in courts.
@@TheNetGuy Totally: these models generate pixels based on understanding of the world; they don't recover lost pixel information. In the research world, we more or less consider this problem solved (pixel upscaling problem, not pixel "recovery"). We're on to exploring the nuances of it / how we can differently parameterize reward functions / etc.
My Pixel 7P does a great job upscaling in-camera at non-standard zooms; but that comes with the cost of giving Google my data. Nvidia does the same in their graphics cards, as you know.

I'm a new user to security cameras. Just bought and put the WYZE OG in service as a trial run. Great price but I have experienced continual false motion tripping after dark. Watching the live stream shows frequent orbs, sparklies, tracers, fireworks, glitter shows, and the like, which trip the motion sensor. The motion tagging shows where they were, but are usually so quick, there is nothing in the box. There is absolutely no motion in front of the camera, no bugs, moths, bats, etc. The frequency can be as high as every 15 minutes through the night. I've done all the typical things like restarting, resetting. I've sent a log to WYZE for review. Daytime use is OK, but it has failed on at least 3 times to detect actual motion of a person walking through the protected zone during daylight. Also, unless you use a paid service, the camera has a 5 minute cooldown, meaning that it will not detect new motion within 5 minutes of reporting a motion event. Not sure how this cam shows color at night unless you have some outdoor lights lit, mine is always black and white. I'll probably keep looking for a camera that better meets my needs.
Just speaking on my experience with wyze and other brands of cameras. At night with the infared night vison on they tend to pickup small bugs that set them off. If the moisture content of the air is high it will also cause motion alerts as it picks up tiny water droplets floating in the air. Cam plus or some other AI detection will help false alerts.

The only two cameras that actually have official batteries from Wyze are the Wyze cam outdoor and outdoor V2. These ones need to be plugged in.

Lots of people have come up with options for it. The price difference vs a v3+spotlight is pretty good, if you have a good magnet and super glue you can make it magnetic 👍
