Thank you for being so honest and open because I've seen too many posts with "Low GPA" then they have above a 3.5 which was disheartening.
You are welcome! You should definitely follow Dr. Gray on Instagram. He posts success stories all the time of other students getting in with even lower stats than mine!
honestly that mcat makes up for that gpa easily. lol 516 is no joke.
Also 3k hrs of clinical experience will open a lot of doors lol
@@kamariweaver1536 yeaa. average 3.35 gpa applicant doesnt have anywhere near what she has. She's a real exception.
I think the upward trend also made a big dif. She’s not just a 3.35 gpa application. She also has a upwards trend gpa
@@RedFaceeee I agree! That's one of the important details. Also, I'm humbled by the likes I've gotten for my comment lol. Shows me that people are looking past the surface (which is just the low gpa)
You bring hope to all Low-GPA applicants
Haha it can definitely be done! If you follow Dr. Gray on IG he posts students success stories all the time who have low GPAs!
THIS! And older applicants. I’m 26 and going to apply again for the second time. Wish me luck!
I didn't have excellent stats either! Totally possible.
Just get a 516 on your MCAT lol.
@@kyoukan91 yeah but med schools they mostly care about two things your MCAT score and GPA they could care less about extra curricular but you should consider them as they do strengthen your application but your acceptance rate just goes up and up when your grades go up
Great video. I think three things really set you apart:
1. You have a great personality, which comes across in your PS and undoubtedly came across in your interviews:
2. You wrote a great application; and
3. Your EMT experience demonstrates your commitment to healthcare.
Aw thank you! The way I wrote my essays and clinical experience was definitely very helpful!
It’s crazy how a difference of 7 points on the MCAT can bring you from 68th percentile to 94th percentile. The 20 points between 508 and 528 really make or break a lot of students. Each point is a hurdle to overcome.
Nah, 523 here probably about to apply for a third cycle. Schools don't care about MCAT after like 516/517
@@sebucwerd 523!!!? thats an insane score, you should be able to get into a school
@@sebucwerd agreed 518, applied 20 schools, accepted into one. The score does not matter past a certain point
@@sebucwerd what's holding you back?

I took a gap year and unfortunately applied late (sent out my first secondary in September). I wanted to get a job to build more experiences, but I literally got rejected from every single job or didn’t hear anything back but on the flip side I just got accepted into my first MD school! Watched this video right before the acceptance email came in and it made me optimistic. Loved it!
Yay! That’s amazing, congrats!
Yayyy...am so happy for you. Congrats 🎉🎉.
Awesome story :)
I cannot thank you enough for this video. I’m a pre-med junior in college and I’ve been in such a slump all day because I have my first physics exam tomorrow and the professor is notoriously bad about making exams impossible. Your calm demeanor and success despite making a few Bs and Cs here and there has calmed me down so much! Thank you!
You're so welcome, glad I could help! :)
This video is great motivation. I was a EMT as well prior and didn’t have a good college gpa. I then joined the military and work as a clinical lab tech while taking college courses and shadowing other providers around the hospital. I think everyone takes different routes to reach the same goals!
There a definitely plenty of different paths you can take! Totally agree :)
Just curious what was your gpa and have you been accepted to med school yet ?
I was a little bit overwhelmed by the title of the video, but I'm glad I watched it. It was reassuring to hear you applied again, three years later! thank you so much for sharing your experience :) it gives me a lot of hope as a non-trad!! Congrats on getting into medical school!!!
Thanks so much! And yes, I definitely took quite the long path to get here haha. Best of luck with your premed journey!
Applied for Med School after my first year at University and didn't get in, so I decided to do a BSc in Anatomy. I finished my last paper in Jan this year and now I'm three weeks into Med School:) You can do this! Never give up!

Thanks so much!! :)
I had a similar story. Got a lot of B/Cs in science course, my since GPA was probably 3.2 which is not horrible but is pretty bad when you are applying for med school as an Asian applicant. My MCAT score at the time was decent, but it wasn't all that great. I was on the 15 pt scale for each section and got like a 31. It definitely wasn't high enough to save my GPA. I applied the first time, also late and was waitlisted at 2 places. The second time I applied and got into the school I wanted to go to. I did not take a post-bac program. Instead, I focused on every other aspect of my application. I did a lot of volunteering, clinical shadowing, research + publications, and medical mission trips. I think because of what I had done, I stood out extracurricular wise from my fellow applicants. This also made my interviews very easy as I had a lot I could talk and share about. I was never a person that was great at test-taking, but I was able to get into medical school and have passed all my boards so far. Good luck to those applying to medical school. My two pieces of advice is to make sure this is what you want to do before you commit and make sure you have a life outside of studying and school.
Great story! I am also interested in getting enrolled in med school. I’ve some queries about the process. Can I dm you? Your email please.
I feel encouraged and inspired by your story. Thanks for sharing that and best wishes on your medical career!
Thank you so much for sharing. This really brings hope as a pre-med. I want to go to medical school but I feel behind that I’m not smart or fast enough to do best in my classes. But thank you tho for sharing. This helps
You give me hope!
"pretty bad when you are applying for med school as an Asian applicant". thats a shame that bc you are Asian with those stats you get rejected, but is true and nobody wants to talk about this discrimination ....should not matter
26 years old????? You look 17😳
LOL story of my life 🤣
you’re my new favorite UA-camr!! i am in such a similar boat gpa-wise, I’m also an EMT and i graduate this spring to start my gap years. I have been having a ton of doubts recently, but it’s videos like this that help me realize i can still do this. Thank you so much!!
Aw so glad to hear! Best of luck with applying!
dont get fooled, you either have a high GPA or a high MCAT and often times a high MCAT holds more weight
agreed
you can’t have both?
@@j4yla959 you can have both it’s possible
Yup
That's common knowledge which is why perfect grades don't matter. If you have a low GPA but a high admissions score there's a good chance you're going to get in somewhere because admissions exams hold more weight than GPAs. It's the same with law school. I went to undergrad with a girl who graduated with a 2.8 GPA but she got a perfect score on the LSAT and now she's a law student at UPenn.
This one video itself encouraged me to like and subscribe to your page. Finally, someone who doesn’t have a 4.0 gpa and 99th percentile MCAT. Love your transparency can’t wait to see more!
Glad you liked it! I know others being transparent has helped me along the way so I’m happy to do the same!
Love this story! In the pre med community there is this notion that you have to get perfect grades and its simply not true! Can you make a more detailed MCAT prep video? 516 is phenomenal!!
Definitely not true! And thank you! I have a video on my MCAT prep already on my channel and will do one specifically on CARS in the future!
You’re a pretty good writer! I like that I didn’t feel like you were selling.
Thanks so much! ☺️
I’m not even going to medical school but I still watched the video because it motivates me to study hard lolll
I recommend Wake Med!! I am an undergraduate at WFU and I have been to a lot of events with the medical students and they all love it, Wake is amazing!
That is good to know!! Thank you! :)
Im nursing student but I Loved THIS video! first person to be honest and show details on an app for med school

Non-trad Firefighter/Paramedic premed. Your story really connected with me and was the encouragement I needed during a tough time. Thanks(:
Aw so happy that my video helped, best of luck with your premed journey! By the time you get into med school you will definitely have some amazing experiences that will help you become an even better doctor in the end!
Hey Maggie! Thanks for this video, it’s very reassuring to me. Im a non trad. Being 26 currently my freshman year of college. I can also say it is tough working while being in school, so I too told my boss that I could only work certain days. Great video and I hope to see more updates with your journey.
Good for you, requesting less work was so helpful for me! Best of luck with your journey!
You've already received 10 acceptances?? Congratulations! I've only received 2 acceptances 😅 I'm hoping to hear back from my state school next month so fingers crossed!

Haha yep that was me! Thanks so much and best of luck applying! I was thinking of doing a video where I showed how I changed the descriptions for AACOMAS and TMDSAS. I didn’t actually end up applying to any Texas schools though. I just submitted the primary and then realized I wouldn’t be considered a TX resident (my dad is a resident, but I would have to be his dependent to get the residency and I’m not lol). As far as EMT, I got the certification while I was working full time as a lab tech! Then a few years later finally applied to jobs and was able to easily find one!
Do u have to be a Texas resident to apply to Texas medical schools
I like your transparency.... would love more of “behind the scene” types of video....
I was doing homework while watching your video so didnt hear parts of it....
Congrats on several acceptances.... question: why the military school was crossed out from your list?
They required a non-science letter of recommendation and I didn't have one. Like not even any professor I could ask for one if I wanted to because I didn't have any relationships with professors from non-science classes
Thank you so much for uploading. I really loved hearing your story. I started college strong and then ended it super weak GPA wise. =( I am lost as what to do now that I graduated but I am more hopeful after hearing about your success. Congrats and wish you the best in medical school!! ♡

I did IM residency at Wake Forest. Winston-Salem is kind of dull, but you can't beat the lack of traffic and LOW cost of living. From what I saw, they take good care of their med studs. A lot stay on for residency training.
That is good to know thank you! And yes, we definitely love that there is such low cost of living!
Hey im a 3rd yr at wake if you want information of the school i would be glad to help you out
This is inspiring. Especially since I did not know I wanted to go to med school until my junior year. I also had an unfortunate problem with my medication my sophomore year, which made me sleep for 16 hours a day, I ended up missing classes and failing, not to mention I had a job. But my junior year I got my dose fix and got my act together, and I currently have all As so far my spring semester. Hope I can turn this around!
Also love the intro to your personal statement!!!

Love your transparency. You are not your grades!
Wish I could hire you privately to study for my MCAT! You seem like someone who understands low GPA/non-traditional.
I do MCAT tutoring and application advising and will have more openings coming up soon. Email me at admin@itslifebymaggie.com and/or my website will have more info soon as well! I love helping students who have a similar journey as mine!
Your low GPA was offset by an upward trend (you did well in your postbac courses) and a very good MCAT of a 516 (with balanced section scores). :)
I’m really concerned I’m not getting in anywhere this cycle. I have almost a 4.0 GPA and a pending MCAT but I didn’t really have my heart set on this path until my junior year of college, so I don’t have much other supplemental stuff that they look for. I’m praying that schools understand that, because if not then they are basically punishing you for not wanting to be a doctor since high school. If I don’t get in anywhere, I’m not giving this thing another shot
If you’re not willing to try again if you don’t get in the first time, maybe there is another career out there you’d be more passionate about! I would suggest doing some more exploring of your interests!
Congrats!! You’re so badass!!! I’m currently a kinesiology major in my first year and i decided to take anatomy it’s kicking my ass bahahah. I love to see how other people’s journey goes and you give me hope! I think i’m leaning towards the PA route (maybe possibly NP) but tbh i’m still crazy wondering. I even thought about nursing. I’m looking for some place to start clinical experiences how long did your EMT certification take you? Once again, congrats!!
Those are all great options! You should definitely outreach in your community and try to shadow each of those professions to see which you enjoy most! I think I took my EMT course in about 3ish months while working full time. My work schedule was 8 am - 4pm and my EMT class was 5 - 9pm and it was totally doable with a full work schedule.
I'm also considering the PA route! I think I could do medical school, but I'm not sure I want to spend 13 years on my education. I'm starting off in Surgery tech though to learn more about the medical field.
@@larkluvshorses7631 Haha yeah it is quite the long journey. Being a surgery tech will be fun!

If you can afford to relocate, there are 3 affordable science programs in North Carolina. Non-State residents are charged $2500 per semester. That’s right! Increase your CGPAs and SGPAs and go forward to MD/DO SOM. The 3 UNC-System universities are Elizabeth City State University, UNC-Pembroke and Western Carolina University. Also, head out to Texas where the proliferation of new medical schools are occurring.

PEOPLE A LOW GPA IS ANYTHING BELOW 3.0. For a bunch of smart people we sure are neurotic as f. Above 3.0 is acceptable GPA!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For the last time!!!!!!
nah low gpa is like sub 3.3. below 3 is like almost no chance of getting in.
ok I saw her gpa after my previous reply.... not exactly sub 3.3 but her's is still kind of low.
MCAT is a more fair metric to differentiate students, because different colleges grade differently. Some colleges are easier than others.
3.0 still get in 2.7 will have a HARD time. Who frowns upon it? Has an ad com told you that your 3.2 was not good enough?

I feel like I’m still in trouble, I had a 2.45 my freshman year because of working and a death in my family which has killed my overall gpa ever since. Even though mine has an upward trend my overall is a 3.01 because they still count the classes you failed and had to retake

@@DanJGomez nice! Didn't know that either! Cincinnati is lowest on my BFs list right now, so if we end up there at least there will be some good football to watch! 🤣
Congratulations on all of your success!! I just have a quick question I’m sure anyone can answer: I noticed that you didn’t have any physician letter of recommendations, are they not required? I always thought that D.O. Schools required an osteopathic physician letter of rec and Vice verse for M.D. schools. This is the only thing holding me back from not applying this cycle. I don’t have any meaningful relationships with physicians, but I have plenty of faculty/ employer/ committee letter options for my letters of recommendation!
Yeah! So this was my application for MD schools and a physician letter isn't required. I also applied to DO schools with a different application and they require a physician letter and I was able to find shadowing the spring before I applied so I could have a letter to meet that requirement!
I recently got accepted as well and have some advice for anyone applying. So, I was a high GPA (3.805) and a little above average MCAT (508). For extracurriculars my major things were virtual shadowing and I volunteered with the crisis text line. I also had hobbies and had done theatre in high school. I’m mentioning this because we were practically opposite applicants and I notably got into my ideal school and then was rejected or waitlisted by everyone else. It’s also worth noting that I didn’t get in till I sent an update letter to all the schools about me being employed as an Ophthalmic Technician. So, I would argue that experience is really the most important part of an application and if you just got rejected and need another year my biggest suggestion is work as an EMT, scribe, or medical assistant. Then throw in some volunteering with something you’re passionate about and that oftentimes should be enough. Other suggestions are if your GPA is solidly at or below 3.2 you can always consider a masters or PhD program. The best part is that those degrees will even help with residency and fellowship applications. I’ve looked into this a good bit so if anyone has any questions I’d be willing to help.
@@7283SHH I’d apply assuming your MCAT goes well. Major thing is if you’re looking to be in medical school in 2024 I’d recommend getting done with that MCAT sooner rather than later and making sure you score well like 512+. Otherwise, make sure the GPA is as strong as possible. Then I definitely recommend throwing in some safe schools, like DO schools. Otherwise, you should have a good shot and at worst if you don’t get in you can keep improving and consider doing some college classes to improve your GPA.
@@7283SHH every class with a grade will count for the GPA on AMCAS, I’ll also tell you that retakes don’t replace the previous grade for the transcript. Personally, I had a C+ in organic Chem and due to this I chose not to retake it. At the absolute worst, you can always get a masters or PhD, but that’s generally a last case scenario. If you end up with 3.1 or lower, I’d definitely consider doing it so that you can hopefully have a high post graduate GPA. If you’re confident a 3.2 is in the future, then I’d make sure you get that and if you can get even just a little bit better I’d shoot for it. A good MCAT score can definitely offset a low GPA, but the higher the GPA the better.
Is this a DO school?
@@rosalia7482 no, I got into an MD program.
