I appreciate you mentioning that you’re in recovery. It’s important. I’m also in recovery and having someone like you mention that in a video helps others who may feel alone with it that day. Thanks. 🔺🔹
I am also in recovery I have about 10 years was really caught off guard when you mentioned that you were in recovery yourself, it’s not easy. Congrats man and I hope whatever you’re doing to stay clean keeps on working for you.
I think that the main reason they released the records to you was due to your first video showing your rational and evidence driven approach to handling these topics. You don't sensationalize or villianize. You simply analyze, and most in this space don't do that. The fact you got the records is a testament to your diligence and honesty in reporting accurately.
I suspect the smoke screen was out of embarrassment. He was found right next door to the search area. Not a good look, tbh. I wouldn't doubt that the last video and how it was handled helped in getting the request bumped.
Absolutely. I use to make fun of my husband for taking water everywhere he went, and I mean EVERYWHERE. Even if you don't think you need it, you may come across someone or an animal that may not have planned as well as you have.
Yeah, that's what I think. they wanted to hide things for fear of legal consequences. this scenario is pretty much what I suspected based on the earlier one. The Bugs Bunny meme of "taking a left at Albaquerque"... has far more merit than people realize. People can and DO get lost like that.
I see your point, but I'm not sure it would hold water on federal court (which is where it would go bc federal lands.) The fact of the matter is, as harsh as it sounds, national parks are not amusement parks, and visitors are ultimately responsible for making sure they know how navigate, signs or no signs. (There often aren't any signs on purpose, because it's wilderness.)
My sister and I went to Hovenweep. We hiked down into the bowl of the site. There were NO SIGNS and NO GUIDEROPES or ANYTHING, not even a worn path in the dry dirt, to show the way to ascend and exit the bowl. It was unbearably hot down in the bowl and, with nothing to guide me, I got lost and, because it was excruciatingly hot, I got a bit frantic and went to the nearest way up and out of the bowl. I scrambled up the side of the bowl next to a ruin at the rim and got out. The rangers were NOT happy with me, but I told them that had the path been marked AT ALL, I wouldn't have become disoriented and would not have had to scramble out as best I could because I was certain if I didn't get out of that hell hole, I was going to have a heat stroke - they backed off. Not surprised that the signage at Mesa Verde is no better. So sad for Mr. Stehling, his wife, and his family and friends.
As a recovering heroin addict, I found it notable that there was a picture of a lighter and a tiny bit of tinfoil found with Dale's remains. I wonder if he decided to extend his original walk in order to get to a less populated area in order to use opiates. This may even explain how Dale ended up going off-trail. He also could have been hesitant to call for help initially due to possession of drugs. Either way, this is a tragic case, and I really feel for his loved ones. Just because someone is using drugs does not make them a bad person. I also want to thank the presenter for sharing that he is also in recovery. I think it's really helpful for people to see a well-spoken, thoughtful, intelligent, and likeable person who is/was an addict. It helps people get a better idea of how addiction can effect anyone.
Exactly . At the guest center or museum they said he was feeling no pain or whatever…. Seeing that foil gave me the same sense of his going off to smoke some blue 30’s (oxycodone) or heroin .
Remember kids, what do you do when you realize you're lost? STOP MOVING. This guy literally walked himself to death. If he just sat down and waited, he'd be here today no doubt. Edit: Yes guys. I know there are some situations when you need to attempt self rescue. But in most cases, if you are not in immediate danger, and people know you are missing and where you are (in a general vicinity) you are SIGNIFICANTLY more likely to survive if you STOP MOVING AND WAIT FOR RESCUE.
But there are cases where it would have been advantageous, lost people would have tried to walk a few kilometres toward their safety instead of dying, close to a road or settlement ...
@ There are exceptions but as a general rule you should stop moving. Only attempt to keep moving if 1) no one knows where you are and won’t come looking for you or 2) you are in immediate danger (ie. A bear is attacking you, you are freezing to death and need shelter, etc.).
@ If you’re lost enough that the sun has gone down, you shouldn’t keep moving. Stop and wait for rescue. His family knew he was in the park. He was known to be missing. If he hadn’t walked MILES and MILES he would have been found in probably 48 hours. He probably wouldn’t have died of dehydration if he just sat down in some shade. And, like ME said, built a signal fire.
I am puzzled if the Air Force is pinging his phone why couldn't they tell where he was? We had a woman go missing in a snow storm years ago. Could not find her. Then someone asked about checking where her phone was. Turns out she had driven off the road and was in the middle of a field covered in snow. She was found alive.
As a former member of the Colorado search and rescue community I can say it is not unusual for the Air Force or Army to be casually involved in search rescue operations in the state. They like to go on missions and will give resources whenever asked. Plus they have tremendously higher budgets and capabilities than the park service.
As a former Marine, who has had CWT and Search and Rescue training in the Sierra Nevada mountains......I agree. We have helped look for missing and injured people in that area of California and Nevada since at least the 70s.
My pops does civil ait patrol, and there's tons of overlap between parks, airforce, and civilian rescue groups. It's amazing how easily people are influenced to believe in things they don't even know the basics of.
@@eccentricsmithy2746 i disagree. my grandmother was murdered 27 years ago. i'm well over the grief of the death itself, but would love for the case to be solved so there can be closure. it's the only thing still keeping us unsettled.
I've been sober a little more than three years myself. Addiction is a terrible problem to have, and since you're abusing your body you are more vulnerable to the elements. At 6'3, I weighed only 165 lbs at my worst point, and now I'm back to a healthy 210. If I had gotten lost in the woods five years ago, my odds would be a lot worse than they are now. Big respect to you for your efforts in recovery.
Really proud of you. 3 years is no joke. I’m glad that you’re healthy and more importantly that you’re still with us. I wish you the best of luck and hope you have a really great life❤️
I kicked heroin 13 years ago. I'm still taking subutex, but only 2mg every other day. Your videos have been giving me relaxation and relief through hard times for 4 years now and I thank you deeply for that. My thoughts are with you and your recovery ☮️
I'm so glad someone told me as a child to stay put. I got lost at the zoo once, I was waiting in this line to slide down a slide and it was so long that I decided I would go back to the bottom and find my dad instead of waiting. I was like 7 though and couldn't remember where to go, so I decided to sit next to a petting zoo and just wait like I had been told (and of course cried the whole time 😂) and eventually my dad found me. I felt super bad for not going down the slide like we agreed, but at least I remembered to stay put when I realized I was lost and not keep moving. I probably wouldn't have died at the zoo but it definitely was a learning moment for me. RIP to Dale.
@@WobblesandBean Had something similar when I was 7. I went through Sleeping Beauty's castle while my family waited outside. When I came out, I couldn't find them. Freaking out, I decided to wait at the castle, as it is the last known landmark.
As someone who has struggled with pain medication years ago I really appreciate the care you took to respect Dale. While I don’t know what he suffered from, I know I was pretty embarrassed about my addiction to pills. I also caused my family a lot of stress over it and remember them having to monitor my finances. I have been clean for almost a decade now. But I still remember the struggles and how it felt. I don’t think your video was disrespectful and I totally understand why you felt it needed to be mentioned. Just wanted to say thank you for the hard work you put into this series and for getting the answers many of us thought we would never get.
I appreciate how quickly you turned this video out after getting the records. I didn't think it was portals, but it's still a solid feeling to know the actual circumstances that led to Dale's unfortunate passing. May his family and loved ones have their own peace.
@@unropednope4644There's portals all over National Parks. That's why they don't allow people to go in certain areas. Why else would they do that? So they don't get lost like this guy? Nope. It's obviously portals. Don't be ridiculous.
I love that you have allowed us a small glimpse into you, a successful and put together, respectable human being, and also someone in recovery. Addiction is STILL so stigmatized and addicts are often seen as subhuman and not worthy of dignity, healthcare, and compassion. So, when someone who is respected for their diligent efforts and high standards in their video production speaks on being addicted at points in life, it forces people who respect that person but have negative views about addicts to reconsider how they view addiction. It's not a quick fix, to get clean and stay that way. There's a lot of ugly things from your past that you need to look at honestly, and work through to find peace. So glad to see you overcome those hurdles and have been able to focus more on sharing your gifts with the world. As someone with a lot (a LOT) of friends who never made it through their addictions, their gifts and contributions to the world never materializing, it's always wonderful to see the success stories. ❤
Maybe not important but my family owned a butcher shop for decades, and I can tell you firsthand how damaging meat processing is to the body. Back injuries and long wearing injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome are unavoidable. I've known many a butcher who suffered from opioid addiction coming out of the 00s when those were prescribed like candy and then turned to hard drugs in the 2010s when they were cut off as the medical tide shifted and doctors left the addicts they created to flounder. RIP, Dale and peace to his family.
Not relevant to this case specifically but I lost my Brother In Law to an almost identical set of circumstances with Opiods you describe about 8 years ago.
Unfortunately the new normal now that affects almost every family, becoming so strict in the pain meds made it people’s only option to turn to more dangerous street drugs

Your channel is literally my favorite missing persons channel. I remember when this case originally surfaced, excited to hear how it resolved. Thank you for the great content!!
Damn. So sad that a misplaced sign likely caused such an avoidable death. If you've got parents/older loved ones that love to hike, make sure they take at least a whistle with them. It's small and easy to carry, but can make a difference, and it beats trying to holler your head off.
I wonder if it’s why the park was being so shady with releasing details on the case…they were worried about public outcry and/or possible lawsuits over the sign leading to his death. Or there was a bit of negligence with the report of the woman hearing someone call for help when park service people had heard cries for help previously, which is why they didn’t include the woman’s statement- they didn’t want record of their failure to find him despite multiple witnesses hearing his pleas.
People often don't realize how easy it is to get lost. I was hiking blood mountain with my wife a while back and came to a point in the trail with boulders and lots of brush. We had ideas where the trail could go but decided that under no circumstances will we attempt any direction and go beyond sight of where we were. We were going to head back down but another couple was heading down and showed us the way up. If you simply pick a direction and go you will get lost instantaneously. If you are ever hiking and don't know where to go just turn back. It's not worth it.
Just home from getting my braces tightened, so I’m in bed relaxing, ignoring the ache, and ready to watch! I’ve been bingeing this channel already this week, so this is great!
This may come off as a bit strange, but I don't typically watch videos this long. Your voice inflection, cadence, and presentation style are very soothing and engaging, even if you are broaching often uncomfortable content. Keep up the good work and I wish you success in your future endeavors.
Great video! Also, I got off opiates (severely damaged my back when I was 24, saving someone else from a tower of kegs) around 12 years ago. I've now been sober a year or longer than I was addicted. You've done a great job at sobriety and your videos. Keep it up.
Addiction is different than dependence. Taking opiates for legit pain and then developing physical dependence for years is not addiction. Glad you’re healed now.
@YahushasDisciple Correct. Painkillers is where it started (oxycodone 30, Percocet 10, Morphine 40+), but went EVERYWHERE, for a decade, before I quit.
My pet has just died today and I'm really glad this video popped up to distract me. Thanks for all the effort you put into this and every case you look at.
sorry to hear that, I've had to put two down this year, and one passed at the vets office while waiting to be euthanized, it was pretty heartbreaking tbh. hope you have a lot of good memories with your pet!
My opinion: Reason for delay of info was for civil suit protection. I recently got lot in a very traveled trail. I got dehydrated and lost ALL my strength. I couldn't even tell out for help. I was not hurt, only completely unable to move. Luckily, I was able to send a cell phone ping to my family and they contacted local search and rescue. I was rescued. I stayed put bc I couldn't move. That saved me.
Thank you for being open about your own recovery. There is too much stigma and shame associated with addiction; addiction is not a personality flaw, it's a very natural thing that can happen to almost anyone under the right circumstances. I think how addiction is often portrayed is quite harmful: it creates unnecessary shame that only makes things worse for those addicted, and makes it harder to seek help. And I think it also makes people more likely to fall into addiction, since they think it won't happen to "people like them". Take care around addictive substances (or addictive behaviours!), and talk about your experiences with friends, family and heathcare providers. And never forget that you are valuable, and worth helping, and that asking for help is not a weakness - it takes strength and courage ❤
After watching your previous video, my brother and I sat down to brainstorm. The location he was found was pretty much the exact place we speculated! Your videos are great. They are must watch content, and you can tell effort and care are put into them.

It’s actually spelled Aragon and it’s a Hispanic surname of Spanish origin from the Aragon region of Spain. He mispronounced the name, as it’s not spelled Aragorn. Having grown up in Southern Colorado, I know a lot of Aragons as it’s a very common Hispanic last name
@@ChristianDurland I actually suspected that might be the case, but I just thought this was funnier. I'm Portugese so Aragón is a pretty familiar word, but like you said, he didn't pronounce it how I'd expect it.
Elevation might have also been a small factor. Where he lived in Texas is probably at around 1000 ft above sea level. Mesa Verde is around 7000 ft. and that will effect your thinking and walking abilities. Great video!
I worked in the park at Mesa Verde during this time. I vaguely remember being told a visitor went missing and heard a little about the search going on but that was about it. I would collect money from the trial guide boxes down the spruce tree trail. I think at the time there were 4 boxes that had info about spruce tree house. 3 of the trial guide boxes were mainly trail Guides for spruce tree house. 1 box was meant for Petroglyph trail, it had a little ledger people would sign if you decided to take that trail. There was a fork that led down a dirt path (petroglyph) and the paved path continued to spruce tree house. Spruce tree house was a loop that would lead you down to it and back around. If you weren’t paying attention it would have been easy enough to go down the dirt path to Petroglyph trail and continue down that trail. You would have been covered by trees for awhile but eventually you would need hydration and that particular trail was not heavily populated.
Thank you for giving this update! Glad to know the information. I have a son with autism who loves to walk and will just power on instead of staying put. He has gone missing multiple times, and has always been found so far. My fear is the one time he is never found in the future.

Thank you so much for this update. I appreciate your attention to detail in every video you do. I also appreciate you being so conscientious and respectful to not only the people affected by these disappearances but to everyone involved in the search for them.
I agree. His entire route, from leaving the Petroglyph Trail to his final resting place, followed a riverbed. Granted it was dry, but I suspect he was searching for water while following the path of least resistance.

Grateful for the update 👍& thanks for your persistence with the Park Service. I say this not to gloat, but Stehling's remains were found exactly where I suggested on the first video. Occam's razor is indeed a powerful tool, especially when combined with OS Maps. Edit: also worth noting: Stehling had no water on a hot & dry day. He followed a (dry) riverbed North, potentially in search of water following hours of walking & early dehydration.

Thank you for making this video. I did see the previous one as well. I learned things that I didn't know, for instance, that my parents drove all the way back to Gallup and then forgot to bring items for the search and rescue dogs. I also didn't know that the Air Force was tracking Dale's phone. I'm curious about that. How did the Air Force get involved in Dale's disappearance? Also, I found interesting, the description of the location where Dale's remains were ultimately found. I didn't know he was found in a dry riverbed. I got goose bumps, because right after I learned that he was missing, I had a dream that he was found deceased, laying in a dry riverbed. That is pretty weird. My brother was a different sort of fellow. He was quirky. Everyone who knew him liked him; he was just that kind of a guy. He did have his demons, and addiction was one of them. I'm pretty sure that the medication mentioned in that heavily redacted file was methadone. He had been on a methadone program for a long time. According to his wife, his methadone was counted and accounted for; he wasn't taking more than he was prescribed. Dale also had an affinity for meth, which might have been the drug use that was mentioned by his wife. He was directionally challenged, a trait I also have. When he and I travelled together, we got "misplaced" all the time. The mystery is solved, and the case is closed. But for me, there is just an emptiness that Dale once filled. He was my best friend, my cohort, my partner in crime, my confidant. I will never get over losing him the way we did. Thank you for telling the rest of the story.
Terrific video. Glad you were able to get the file... it really explains everything. I feel bad for Dale's family, and for Dale himself--seems like he didn't stand a chance after encountering that sign, coupled with his poor sense of direction and the fact that he wasn't likely to just stay put once he realized he was lost.
Bro, your videos are phenomenal. A lot of videos I've watched that try to investigate cases of disappearances aren't as meticulous or have much of evidence provdied including you actually go and travel to the last known locations of the ppl who dissappear which is awesome you do this. Others dont even correct their mistakes or make changes or updates to their findings. Love the videos bro. Keep up the amazing work!
Great video. I have hiked that trail on a hot June day and I had to make the decision to turn around and go back when I ran out of water. Desert hiking is unforgiving and I am surprised he made it as far north as he did, although it would have been daylight for hours after he was last seen, the temperature is dropping
It’s interesting about the effects of elevation…my bf & I both are from sea level (as you said) or below even, yet when we visited (on a road trip of sorts, by van) the Rockys we both experienced only positive effects of the altitude. Very strange indeed how it can affect people differently. We expected to have sickness but if anything we felt like our performance was enhanced while hiking…I know that sometimes asthmatics are told to stay in these high altitude places, so I wonder if that’s why. And perhaps driving up slowly helped us acclimate, idk but we still went on long hikes into the mountains and felt like it was helpful rather than more difficult…idk
As a somewhat directionally challenged person myself, yeah, seeing your footage I believe I could've easily gotten turned around and lost in there, at least without a map in my hand. Sad story. Great video, as always, and thank you for the update!
One of the First things taught to Boyscouts, is if your lost sit down and don’t go any further. You have no idea which direction you are going. If Dale would have just stopped, he would have been found. It didn’t sound like they did much of a Search either!!!

@@elizabethmcbride222thats exactly what he did
I think you are spot on
Exactly . At the guest center or museum they said he was feeling no pain or whatever…. Seeing that foil gave me the same sense of his going off to smoke some blue 30’s (oxycodone) or heroin .
I have been fighting my addiction for years and I'm now trying to heal from the past pain so I can get my life back 💯✌🏽🙏
A shame that potentially not having two screws in a sign instead of one allowing it to be spun around might have cost this guy his life.
Grounds for a lawsuit, directional signs that could be manipulated is stupid.

Maybe some jackass flipped it the other way trying to be funny
There was a map...

I think he did stop overnight that first day but since no one came he decided to keep going. No water or food probably was the factor.
And, like ME said, built a signal fire.
so the trail doesnt allow you to turn back on it, you have to go on the loop back? why didnt he just turn around?

I am puzzled if the Air Force is pinging his phone why couldn't they tell where he was? We had a woman go missing in a snow storm years ago. Could not find her. No such thing as recovery If all you do is talk about. If it still defines your life you just swapped addictions.
As a former member of the Colorado search and rescue community I can say it is not unusual for the Air Force or Army to be casually involved in search rescue operations in the state. They like to go on missions and will give resources whenever asked. Plus they have tremendously higher budgets and capabilities than the park service.
tell that to David Paulides, who thinks military involvement equals conspiracy
@@kitfisto1827 Probably not worth the time, people who think such things are true can't be bothered by reality.
As a former Marine, who has had CWT and Search and Rescue training in the Sierra Nevada mountains......I agree. We have helped look for missing and injured people in that area of California and Nevada since at least the 70s.

I appreciate how quickly you turned this video out after getting the records. I didn't think it was portals, but it's still a solid feeling to know the actual circumstances that led to Dale's unfortunate passing. May his family and loved ones have their own peace.
Portals?😂. Why would it be portals??

Damn. So sad that a misplaced sign likely caused such an avoidable death. If you've got parents/older loved ones that love to hike, make sure they take at least a whistle with them. It's small and easy to carry, but can make a difference, and it beats trying to holler your head off.
A caring fullonsociopath??
And a compass
I wonder if it’s why the park was being so shady with releasing details on the case…they were worried about public outcry and/or possible lawsuits over the sign leading to his death. Or there was a bit of negligence with the report of the woman hearing someone call for help when park service people had heard cries for help previously, which is why they didn’t include the woman’s statement- they didn’t want record of their failure to find him despite multiple witnesses hearing his pleas.
Good idea!
A gps and a map help too. Hiking 101.

I would collect money from the trial guide boxes down the spruce tree trail. I think at the time there were 4 boxes that had info about spruce tree house. 3 of the trial guide boxes were mainly trail
Guides for spruce tree house.

Them ge-tar strings in the intro get me every time. Thank you sir, great info!
spine chilling cords! i actually listen to all his videos at 1.25x 🎸
Keep up the great videos, your work is some of the best out there!
As a somewhat directionally challenged person myself, yeah, seeing your footage I believe I could've easily gotten turned around and lost in there, at least without a map in my hand. Sad story. Great video, as always, and thank you for the update!
good luck for your recovery! I'm in that situation too
One day at a time
@ thanks :-)
I always get excited when I see one of your videos pop up on the feed.
One of the First things taught to Boyscouts, is if your lost sit down and don’t go any further. You have no idea which direction you are going. If Dale would have just stopped, he would have been found. It didn’t sound like they did much of a Search either!!!
In 1944, my great grandfather, Laine, woke up early to get to his hunting spot on his property before the sun rose; he never returned. To this day, there has been no evidence of what happened to him.
Probably won't get read, but carrying H2O is the ONE thing that gets lighter as you get more hydrated. Well told case, looking forward to subbing, and bingeing your stuff Enigma!
This was my first time on your UA-cam channel. I found it very informative, and you reported the events with compassion and sensitivity.💕☺️
In a world turned upside down, this is what we need. And you remind me of Rod Serling, voice and resemblance.
