    So for antler handles, you don't need to do a whole lot of measuring, eyeballing is fine if you know what your doing, it's pretty simple, I work with sambar stag a lot, all I do is oversize the hole, and cut the tang a bit shorter aka carver tang, (also notch the tang so the epoxy anchors it down) you can also put a pin in it if you like (epoxy these days is strong enough to not have to use a pin) I have had to destroy handles to get them off being held in only with epoxy, that way the handle can fit snug with no gaps and also I don't have to waste time gouging out material, plus with whitetail or mule deer or elk, you want to drill out all the soft marrow/pith anyways and fill it with epoxy, trust me it's better this way, I make the cut off part straight by putting some sandpaper on a perfectly straight surface and slowly sand away until my fit up is perfect with no gaps, works every time.

      I appreciate the tips. I’m not sure if I’ll ever work with antler again, but this is great knowledge in case I do. Thank you!!

    You said, ‘I don’t know what material Antler is…’. It’s basically hair (which is why it stinks when sanded or cut)!

      Hahaha. That makes perfect sense. Smells like burning hair.

      Antler is actually bone, horn is actually 2 parts, bone in the center and hardened hair around the exterior.

    How do I tell stag horn from plastic on a knife handle without damaging it?

    • @Hathenbrucksteelworks
      @Hathenbrucksteelworks  Рік тому

      I’m not sure I can answer that. Maybe use acetone on an inconspicuous spot. If it’s plastic, the acetone with probably wipe off some color, or at very least, make the plastic sticky.

      It’s been a while since I did this video, are you talking about the broach that I used to dig out the handle material? You can buy broaches, or I have a video on how I made mine.

    Why do people who have never worked with something feel they need to clog youtube with videos when they dont know shit about the dubject

    • @Hathenbrucksteelworks

      Is this a rhetorical question, or are you asking for my opinion?

      C'mon Karen, why do you find the need to clog up youtube with hateful comments? I just made a bowie knife with a stag handle and I ran into the same sort of problems but I dealt with it. I found this video very informative for a novice knife maker looking for answers on stag handle knives. If you can't say something nice don't say anything at all.

      Hahahaha. Much appreciated.
      Each time I watch a UA-cam video, from either an experienced maker or not, I watch it to get ideas on what to do, and what not to do. Not everyone’s mind works the same, so someone that has never done something looks at that project with a fresh set of eyes. Sometimes this sparks ideas on how to do things more efficiently, for someone that’s just always done it how everyone else does it. I don’t know if I’ve ever sparked an idea in someone else, but it’s why I like posting and watching things being built for the first time.

      Hathen, way to take the "high road" to answer Karen's question. You are exactly right, you never know what idea might be sparked in someone else by something you say or do. And to Reddog, you are right, "If you don't have something nice to day, don't say anything at all"! @@Hathenbrucksteelworks

      Maybe instead of complaining about the “dubject”…. You should spend more time learning to spell. Also…. Just keep scrolling if you don’t like something
