What's The best Way To Get a Hamon? Comparing Techniques
This is the best thing I’ve seen in a few weeks. Thank you so much for doing such a careful video about it.
I’m glad you like it. I use mine all the time. My pleasure and thanks a bunch.
I’m doing so research on Dave, he lives just up the road from me and DAMN he is a lot better knife maker than I thought
He’s absolutely amazing! He’s very unique and creative in his work.
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks It’s so weird, I always just saw him as neighbor Dave who makes homade pizza 😭
Hahahahaha. Homemade pizza too? The guy is a wizard. 😁
great idea Mike love it!!!! Mark
I sure appreciate you man!! Thank you. 😊
I wish I wasn’t poor 😅
😂
because they dont know all the process of making knives is my guess to be a good maker nothing wrong with some OCD lol
That would actually make sense. They’re probably forged in fire armchair experts, and have no idea that heat treating stainless is a much different process.
Amazing - what actually happened?
This is just the last part of heat treating stainless steel. From the cryo to the temper.
I am thoroughly confused😂
😁
I really like your videos, your craftsmanship is great! I also love your humour and your natural way of being! For marking center on your blocks you may lay them flat on each side and mark with some kind of high gage, at least this is the way I mark center and it works pretty good for me! Thanks make for taking on your time to produce great content!
I really appreciate you. Thanks for the kind words. This is exactly how I mark the center on my edge. I don’t like the little centering jigs a lot of people use, mainly because they will follow any wobbles that may be in the material.
OCD much?
Ummmmm…uhhhhh…maybe? What’re you referring to?
Yea, I'd say so lol
Over compulsive disorder !!😅😊😅😊
I’m so confused right now 😂.
@@Hathenbrucksteelworksyou’ve been getting some weird hater comments lately 😕
Die Griffe sind unschön und unpraktisch !
False
Thanks for making me aware of your opinion. I’d recommend not buying them 😁
What is the press you used to mold The kydex around the knife called
This specific press is from Knifekits.com. I highly recommend it.
Threaded on tang through the handle 😢
Yes.
Do you have tips for anyone that’s looking at trying this for the first time?
Just go for it, then once you notice your problem areas, I can probably help. Materials are pretty inexpensive, and you can typically reheat and reform if your screw up. Also, make your first press and use that until you decide if you want a different kind of press.
A very good review of the 25 ton press and as you say about $3,000 less than the Coal Iron 15 ton press. One comment, as I mentioned below the Coal Iron press I got had a 3" cylinder which makes it a 9 ton. They sorta blew me off saying "it works doesn't it?" Wrong answer. I'll bet if you took that leaf spring turned up on edge on the Coal Iron press you'd be surprised how well it worked the metal. OR, with the round drawing dies. The 12 ton dies are so small surface area they're still putting a lot of pressure per sq in. I'm still jealous of your 25 ton press :) Ken H
Thank you. That’s definitely not the way you treat people who buy your products. My guess is that not many people know how to figure out of their presses are putting out the tonnage that they claim. Oh for sure. The leaf spring on edge will surely move faster.
Hi, Thank you for your very nice video which gives a lot of tips for the 12 ton press. You know, here in Tunisia we are lacking this kind of press, myself as a disabled person working for my family I strongly need more information concerning the cylinder used, the electric motor as well as the pump. If only you could help me by providing this information I would be very grateful and thank you in advance.
I can try to help, but I don’t have too many details.
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks many thanks for your reply. I need for example bore diameter, and rod diameter. Stroke length, pressure, speed, how many gallon of the reservoir, which kinf of pump, just if you could please. This will help very much. Thanks again
@@totonafI wouldn’t be able to get all that info. Sorry.
@@totonafsome of this info is on their website, but I couldn’t tell you what brands they use or pressure. The rod diameter I could probably measure, that’s about it.
Отличный новолел!!эти предметы покупают варстори и преподносят как редкий оригинал в идеальнейшем состоянии и продают лохам ща е..ба. н..ич..еск..ие суммы😂😂а те в свою очередь очень довольны😂😂
Is the heated top in addition to the depth of the kiln( 21 plus 5?)
I’ll check.
Is the heated lid area in addition to the 21" depth? Or is it 21" with the lid included?
I’m pretty sure it’s included in the depth, but not 100%. I’ll get some measurements for you when I get home.
How long does it take you to make a knife from start to finish?
That depends on a whole bunch of things, but if we’re talking something very simple and basic, I can make one in just a couple days.
Man I use the same pencil
Hahaha. I’m very particular about my pencils.
Any videos of what you made with this beautiful steel?
Oh man. I’m not entirely sure. Probably no videos, but I know I have photos.
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks my wife loved watching the process of making the steel. Where could I see some of the photos of what you made with this? I followed you on Instagram
@denzelayala5162 I like to hear that. Thank you. So, o actually just went through my feed and realized that o never posted the knife I made with this. I’ll create a story showing it.
What is used to etch the steel and bring out the pattern?
Ferric chloride. 4 parts water:1 part ferric.
awesome!! Thank you for sharing
Thank you! It’s my pleasure.
can you stain the wood after it has been stabilized, if not what do you do to get the color of wood you want ?
I’m sure you can apply stain, but it’s not going to absorb into the wood the same way. When stabilizing, you can add dyes to the resin. You can do a brown or a black dye to simulate a stain.
What kind of knife scales were those
Carbon fiber scales on these knives. It’s called forged carbon fiber from Elevated Materials.
Bravo, beautiful work ❤
Thank you 😁
Keep up the great information. Thx for sharing.
Thank you! Much appreciated.
Sheaths are so HUGE. do rivets only come in one size?
¼” and 3/16” are the only two I have used. I’m not too sure if there are other sizes.
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks oh. Could you make a comically large sheath for a comically small knife.
Hahaha. I don’t see why not.
These look absolutely beautiful! But is the copper suitable for food?
Thank you. And yes, the copper in blades wont hurt anything. If anyone tells you that copper in a knife is going to kill you, tell them to contact a bio chemist and have a chat with them about it. 😁
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks haha I will. Thanks
@gabbagandalf8337 😁
Thanks! Love your informative videos, plz continue I’ve benefited greatly from your work!
I sure appreciate you! Thanks a ton!! I’ll definitely keep producing content. Right now I’m trying to get some knives done for Blade Show West, but I’ll have some stuff posted soon.
Another good one. This one inspired me to step up my tang game. I always leave mine pretty ugly after forging, yours are nice and clean and symmetrical. Also gonna give brazing a try, I usually mig my through tang together and it isn’t pretty
Hahaha. I feel mine are pretty ugly. Although, I do need them to point in the right direction when doing wa handles. Brazing is the way to go, in my opinion. It’s hard to MIG a tiny threaded rod to a bulky tang without burning through something.
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks you haven’t seen ugly tang, trust me…. lol And yea, mig can get a little crazy, definitely melted a few in the process
@shauntheknifeguy hahaha. Well, lucky for us, we cover them up with nice handles. 😂
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks exactly, that’s why I haven’t really cared. They’re the ugliest for me when I use my Damascus, I’ll forge the tang from the squished part we’re supposed to cut off in restacks. Weld flaws and all, I figured it’s lots of surface area for epoxy to grab. But… I think I might clean them up, certainly will make for a snugger fit up when slotting.
@shauntheknifeguy I’ve done that several times. Hahaha.
You have some of the best videos on knife making, hands down. Your techniques and results speak for themselves. I do have a question, did you stop selling your stabilized wood?
Thanks a ton for this comment. I appreciate you! I’ll eventually start selling it again, but I just haven’t made any in a few years. I’m running out of good colors, so it might be time to start up again.
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks Ah okay, thanks for the response. Keep up the great work!
Thank you! 😊
I’m on this channel at least once a week
I truly appreciate you. Thank you!
question mike 125CR1 never heard of it you use that to make damascus?with just 15n20? i would love to try it thanks Mark i always buy from NJSB best steel ever
Yeah. Essentially it’s the same as 26C3. Very similar to shirogami.
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks im not familar with that stell either lol so just put 125cr with 15n20 or add 1080 as well thanks mike
@Anderson-HandForged 26C3 is my go to for cutlery now. When I’m feeling really frisky, I go with Shirogami.
I binge watch this channel like nobody’s business
Hahaha. I love that. Thanks a million.
Hello, your knife covers are very good, I am from Argentina, what material do you use for its construction, what is its name, thank you
Well thank you! This material is called Kydex.
@@Hathenbrucksteelworks Thanks for your response
Are you running the little machine shop mini? That’s the reroute I was gonna go but if the DRO sucks I might look elsewhere
I am, yeah. I’ve had nothing but issues with the DRO. It works one day, then it doesn’t work the next. The mill itself works just fine for small work. If I was to do it over, I’d go with the Precision Matthews.
I seriously think you are the best knifemaker/bladesmith on UA-cam, nothing but amazing content. VERY well shot as well... What focal length do you use?
Wow! What a great compliment. Thank you!! Most everything is shot with my 24-70mm and I’m typically between 50 and 70mm. When I do welding shots or something I want to keep my camera safe from, I’ll throw on my 35-150mm or 150-500mm.
Hey thank you man, I've learned a ton from all of your content I can't stress enough. I've honestly watched many of them countless times, like learning to stabilize wood or even hand forging techniques, those videos are dope by the way lol
@Fbomb comments like these keep me going. Seriously, much appreciated.
I really like all of your videos. I don’t have a mean comment off the top of my head so I’ll leave the real one lol. I do have a question though. Every time I try to do a San mai I struggle keeping the core steel. I start to grind and then bam back into jacket. Do you have any tips? Thank you for all you do.
Hahaha. Well I appreciate it. So, for San mai, I’m not sure if I have any amazing tips other than practice. It can be hard to keep the core right in the middle. When you’re forging it out, make sure to smash it evenly on both sides. Don’t assume that if you smash one side, the other side with thin down at the same rate, because for me, it never does. Also, when grinding the material, clean up the edge and spine then etch it so you can keep an eye on where the core is. That way you can grind down one side to push the core more toward the center. I guess I know what one of my next videos should be 😁
Thank you. The etching idea is a good one I’ll try that.
@rileyevans8477 you’re very welcome. I hope it helps
I really appreciate the depth you go into - thanks for sharing.
Thank you! It’s always nice knowing that some people enjoy the longer videos 😁
I'm also in Utah, Lehi. I would love to come visit your shop.
I’m not down in Utah county anymore, but if you’re ever in Logan… 😁
