    This is the second home in which ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).

    The range extender is not for extending WiFi, it's for extending the Z-Wave mesh since the alarm components are all battery powered Z-Wave and thus do not act as intermediate relays in the Z-Wave network.

    One of the other problem/unclear issue with Ring are the 'range extenders.' Ring claims the units have 250 foot range but when you press them they say that 250' range is only likely if you had everything out in a field with no obstructions between the base unit and the range extender. So in a practical installation the range extenders will definitely have a shorter range.
    When I asked the technician to speculate on what the typical range of the range extenders are he stuck with the script.
    The best I can extrapolate from my experience is maybe 25 feet. Even then there maybe some other activity taking place between the base station and the range extenders that might be extending the range a little further, but tech support has not confirmed any of that.
    The reason why I suspect some possible nominal increase in range is that over the course of several days some sensors being served by Ring that were reporting marginal signal strength suddenly reported normal signal strength. I have no idea why I got improvement.
    During the recent hard freeze across the south, I had days without power or the Internet. Ring surprised me by working flawlessly as power sporadically would return for a couple of hours then fail again for a day or two. It switched over to cellular, ran all the internal batteries almost to the point of failure and the range extenders never died while running on their internal batts far beyond the advertised 24 hours.
    I was very pleased and surprised, though when in low power mode and on cellular I could not retrieve remotely the state of all the sensors. Later, when power was restored I was able to check the sensor performance during the outage and noted that all sensors and extenders stayed online.
    One of the few things I believe Ring does need to do is improve the range extenders. I have a large single floor house. Considering the limitations of the range extenders and the quirky specifications of the devices, Ring needs these devices to provide solid performance at 100 feet. They should not advertise optimal performance and confuse the customer into thinking the range extenders can provide that performance in a typical installation.
    They also need to improve their motion detectors. They work, but they are marginal detectors with a rather narrow field, in my book. The old iSmart motion detectors you are just not going to get past. I had to keep the drapes closed because they would detect trucks moving on the street about 100 feet from my house!.
    They should also explain how some of the devices work, like the bridge which I do not have. Ring may be hoping the customer will pay for a professional installation, which I do not believe the system needs with technically savvy people provided accurate information is available.
    However, Ring will do the job and for considerably less than many of their competitors.

    Is it a good idea to order a second Range aExtender to plug in another space in our house???

    • @asksafewise
      @asksafewise  3 роки тому +1

      @Claudine McKay You can try, but it may have the same problem. I'd check your Wi-Fi network's strength. From what you've told us, it sounds like your current range extender is trying to connect to your network and having a tough time. Try rebooting your router and see if the blinking stops or give an internet speed test a try. If those don't work, Ring's customer service might be able to help you out.

    • @katrinaanon1038
      @katrinaanon1038 3 роки тому +1

      The range extenders do not seem to have the range you would believe they would have. Proper placement of the base station and range extenders may mitigate range issues.
      I have ordered an additional extender for my system as the one remaining sensor is at the fringe of its range.
      I feel reasonably certain that the range extenders will not relay extender to extender. Since the base station has the ability to work with your wifi network, you can configure the base to connect to the network wirelessly. So putting your base station at the right place on your network can make the z-wave network serve your devices the best.

    I have a unique question. I just bought a multi family home and I plan to live in one unit. I have a Vivint system at a property I manage and plan to install their system for my unit in the multifamily. I always build in the cost of a home security system into my leases as it is a nice touch for the tenant, but also it ensures that my place will be safe. Since Vivint can get costly, I am thinking about only using them for my unit, and getting a cheaper starter ring package for the tenants unit. I have no real desire to monitor the tenants system except when the unit is vacant. Is this a good idea? I would prefer not to be locked into an extensive contract for the tenants unit.

    • @asksafewise
      @asksafewise  3 роки тому +2

      That's good thinking! Any no-contract DIY system is a good choice for your property while it's vacant. And Ring allows multiple users, so if your tentants want to use the system while they live there, it should be easy to share permissions. Let us know what you end up going with!

    Should I be concerned about the cellular backup only getting 2 bars that are yellow? My cell phone doesn't always work well inside my condo. Is there a way to extend the range of the cellular backup? I have no issues with WiFi and all my Ring security devices work fine.

    • @asksafewise
      @asksafewise  3 роки тому

      Great question! So there could be a number of things interfering with your signal but if it's happening in your home, there may not be much you can do about it.
      First is easiest and probably something you'd hear from tech support - try power cycling everything. We know, it's kind of a cliche, but sometimes it genuinely helps.
      Second, consider getting a cell phone signal booster. They work kind of like Wi-Fi boosters to improve the signal within your home. That could help the poor signal on your phone and on your cellular backup.
      Hope that helps!

    • @sfink16
      @sfink16 3 роки тому

      @@asksafewise Thanks! As a former IT with technical experience, I did try some of your suggestions already. I also looked into the cell phone signal boosters, albeit they are expensive and I live in a condo and am not sure what I can put outside my home.

    Does Ring keep recordings? Had an incident Cox sent a contractor to fix a WiFi issue in the home but the guy ended Up sending a letter two weeks later that he broke his leg severely in the home. This man obviously didn’t hurt himself as we were witness nothing happened and he walked normally to his truck. He knew we had No home video surveillance so he took advantage of us. But of course several neighbors saw him walk normally to his truck. But a Surveillance camera with recording option would have been wonderful to catch this guy red-handed for his life I wonder how many people he’s done this to

    Kangaroo is the cheapest in home Security. Just saying. The only downside is the doorbell doesn’t have live views and you can’t talk to the other person. It takes multiple pictures. Will send the pictures in a gif. I use both I have a ring doorbell on the font door and a Kangaroo doorbell on my back doorbell. Kangaroo doorbell is $25.00 while the cheapest ring doorbell is $99.00. You can get a complete security system from Kangaroo for $50. It includes a yard sign. An alarm system, and 5 stickers. 2 keys if you forgot your password, and so on. I only use the doorbells. I’m just saying there is now a cheeper option out there if regular people don’t have the money to spend on a security system.

    You didn't go into detail about Ring's relationship with law enforcement....what do you mean by that?

    • @asksafewise
      @asksafewise  2 роки тому

      It's a long and tricky answer, but here's a nutshell answer for you, @Cory Tidwell.
      In 2018, Ring rolled out a program where the company reached out to police departments to work together to help identify and stop crime.
      The idea was to help make communities safer, but it made some communities (especially those disproportionately impacted by crime) more afraid of being unfairly targeted or profiled. Ring even donated cameras to some communities to help jump start the program.
      People always had to give permission for Ring or the police to access their footage, but the lines got blurry - especially in those giveaway programs.
      This all came to a head during the civil unrest that broke out after the death of George Floyd in May 2020. Now, Ring has evolved its policies to offer better protections to customers and innocent bystanders that might get caught on camera without their knowledge.
      We know, big nutshell. But we have more on our site if you want to find out more on our stance on things: www.safewise.com/faq/smart-home/ring/#Police_partnerships
