    First big backpacking trip I did with my service dog I brought two types of collapsable bowls- and I never used either of them once😂. I used his silicone frisbee toy as a plate for his food, his water he drank straight out of a wide-brim water bottle. Good memories😂❤

      Haha! That's how it goes sometimes! I wish my doggos would drink out of a water bottle. Never could persuade them to try it 😅

    This is my second time watching this video and it contains a lot of great information. I have since stopped using a pack with my 50 pound hound mix Maggie. She just was not loving it and I already ask a lot out of her. We did the Long Trail in Vermont the last two years, it’s a little over 270 miles and takes about 20-23 days. We are headed to Colorado in late August to hike the Colorado Trail. I think it’s about 480 miles. My dog needs a real sleep system and I finally stopped jerking around and purchased her a 10 degree EE quilt. I should have done this three years ago. I wasted way too much money on lesser quality products, the one you listed from Ruff Wear for example. She is a short haired dog and gets cold fairly easily. From what I have learned from other and from a women named Bailey who has a channel called The Most Important Step. Paw care is very important. Bailey has hiked the entire CDT and many others with her two dogs, one a GS and own a smaller breed and she said paw issues ended their first attempt on the CT. I have met others on the AT getting off with their dogs for the same reason. She goes into great detail on this issue and I highly recommend her channel. I am going to try the boots, more than likely only using them I very rocky areas. I am also trying a product called Pad Tough. We will see how it goes. The Colorado Trail is rocky and very dry and that is what causes issues I am told. I have some months to work on paw protection. You do a great job with your content, thank you. I love hiking with my dog I do my best to take good care of her. If she has an issue we both have an issue. Take care

      I agree! I've watched several of Bailey's videos. She is SO knowledgeable and experienced in the arena of thru-hiking with dogs. I hope the EE quilt works out for Maggie.
      My dogs are currently testing out Alpha Pak. The fit is identical to the packs they were using (from Aliexpress) which is a plus. The durability is a little lacking, BUT the customer service with issues I had was fantastic! Wishing you and your pup a safe fun journey on the Colorado trail 😊🙏

    Thanks for making this video! I just bought a backpack for my dog and I've been really interested in seeing what people put in their dog packs. My plan is for Smokey to carry his sleeping bag, food, water, poopy bags, treats, and an ID card in case he gets separated from me.

    As far as burying poop and all the naysayers.... just remember, where bears. Coyotes, squirrels and every other creature goes to the bathroom, and they dont bury it.

      Animals eating from the wild digest the food they sourced locally. Our dogs eat hard, dry factory processed food where none of it comes from the wild, so it's all a foreign object once digested an left behind. Most parks have signs explaining this.

    great video! you really surprised me with the DIY doggy beds, you very rarely see practical information shared it's usually just "BUY BUY BUY" now and days. Kiki and me are biking the Colorado trail this year, she's a basset hound so I built her a trailer for my bike so she can rest as much as she wants to on the trip.

    I will check out that pack. I really like your tip for the mushers cream. I have been carrying in a plastic bag and your idea is much better. Something I have been carrying but never have used is that powder that clouts blood in case my dog lost a nail or paws get cut. Fortunately I have never used it. I have been carrying my dogs gear because of past pack issues. I would be willing to give this one a try. Thanks

      @JessicaSojourning  Рік тому

      I've tested out a few other brands like Mountainsmith and AlphaPak since but it is still my favorite dog backpack!
      I need to add blood clotting powder to their first aid kit! It's better to have something like that and never need it than to really need it and not have it.

      @@JessicaSojourning Thanks for sharing your experience with this pack. Finding a good pack for a dog can be a real challenge, especially for those of us who are taking our dogs on extended trips. I would really love not carrying all of my dog’s gear and especially her food. I am planning out our trip next summer for the Colorado Trail. I will order this pack and give it a test. What brand of dehydrated food do you feed your dog. I ran into a man on the AT and he had hiked 1,700 miles on the AT with his dog and he said dehydrated food lacked the nutrient needed for a long hike. Not being a vet I have no clue. I have used a mix of high protein and fat food with a little dehydrated food. My dog will eat pretty much anything but I want her well fed and I take very good care of her. I definitely want to drop some weight for the Colorado Trail. Take care and thanks for making these videos.

    hi,
    I really enjoy watching your video, I have looked for the Top paw 3 in 1 jacket and I have not been able to find it? Do you have any other suggestions I like the fleece how it detaches from the outer shell of the jacket. I also would like to try to make the sleeping pad the one that looks like bubble wrap on the inside of it too with the car shield. Where would I find those directions and materials?

    • @JessicaSojourning
      @JessicaSojourning  11 місяців тому +1

      Hey there! Yeah I think the Top Paw jacket may have been discontinued. Pet Smart currently has a similar product: Arcadia Trail 3-in-1 Dog Coat. It has the same outer shell and removable fleece layer design.
      If you go to the blog post linked in the description, I have the info for how I made the dog pad out of a sunshield at the bottom of the post. Hopefully all this helps!

      @@JessicaSojourning Mine too. Off leash, we noticed a rabbit at the same time about 7’ away. I told her “no” and she didn’t chase. Had I not seen it, she’d have gone for it. But if she startles a bear, she’s either gonna get chased away from me or draw the bear to me.-both bad. I’m whistle training her to keep her close. At camp, she’s instinctively on guard and won’t leave. I put a red LED on her collar so I can see her at night. But she goes to bed at 9 🤣

    Just something to think about before you dip into your mushers wax because you forgot chapstick. Your dog’s feet are on the ground. The very nasty ground. All that dirt and bacteria. Just be careful

    Burying poop??? If we found a choice rock we’d just throw some dirt on it . What is the wilderness for at that point???

    • @victoriawhitehead5724
      @victoriawhitehead5724 9 місяців тому +3

      Mainly because dogs aren't in that habitat naturally, so if animals in that area eat it they can get exposed to new bacteria. This is also why some may have a no bury rule, as animals can still dig it and eat it that way. :D

    • @danielcurtis1434
      @danielcurtis1434 8 місяців тому

      @@victoriawhitehead5724 I understand. The thing is foreign bacteria also train one’s immune system. I suspect it’s more an issue of what domesticated dogs eat abd the nutrients left behind???

    • @Tinalicous
      @Tinalicous 4 місяці тому

      Yeah but the amount of dogs and humans that go through the trail is a lot more than what would be there naturally if dogs actually lived there. If every single hiker just had their dog poop in the trail, the trail would be covered by poop in no time. It's doing your due dilligence in keeping the trail clean for others in the future. So please don't just let your dog poop on trail. The last trail I went to had dog poop littered everywhere. Even found dog poop IN THE MIDDLE of the trail. Please don't be that guy. Bring your trash with you, burry your poop, pick up your dog's poop, and leave no trace.

    • @danielcurtis1434
      @danielcurtis1434 3 місяці тому

      @@Tinalicous I’ve honestly never had a dog that would poop directly on the trail. Probably cuz I have always owned border collies. However even my experience with Australian shepherds that are way less intelligent they just don’t go in the middle of a trail.
      As long as it’s off and there’s a rock nearby you remove the rock move the poop to the hole and cover it problem solved and no one’s gonna see it smell it or know it’s there. I also usually did this for my own waste to have an easy start to digging a hole.
      I would recommend you try it it saves a lot of time and effort and really isn’t any different in ultimate effect.
