This game had the most repetitive bosses and enemies, it was a chore to play this. I prefer Maximum carnage.
Except you couldn't play two player on Maximum Carnage... Also the music was way better in Maximum Carnage.

Agreed, when I heard maximum carnage got a co-op sequel I was ecstatic. Then I realized how boring it was and that none of my friends would want to play it for more than one level.
Is there really no 2 player mode for maximum carnage? I never played it co-op but all over the internet people are swearing they have memories of playing it that way in the past

The technique used to render the inferior graphics on the Genesis is called Dithering. Since the Genesis can't display as many colors at once the designers have to "cheat" by placing different colored pixels next to each other in a pattern to simulate the missing detail. It works well enough on a CRT where everything is a bit blurrier but even back in the day you'd probably notice the difference in quality. Dithering is also commonly used to simulate shadows, even the SNES version does this with alternating black and transparent pixels in a checkerboard pattern.

Dithering usually looks fine enough, and probably would have here. The main problem is that the Genesis version just cranks up the contrast. Stuff that's supposed to blend into the shadows instead leaps out from them, and overall the colours don't blend as well. Don't blame dithering, when it's used correctly it looks just fine.
@@Murnjendoof_too depends on the game and how it’s used. Dithering can be an eye sore or you might not even notice. It’s just a technique, how it’s used makes all the difference.
I feel like this episode really nailed the nostalgia goggles coming off.

Ok this is a Supreme demonstration why I love this series. we're over 5 minutes in and so far you're just talking about the game's shortcomings..... regardless of console. I like that. Sometimes on this show, it's not always about the "Console War" but just about why a game is great or flawed. Keep up the good work! You guys deserve the silver Play button and then some!

Given the release year (1995), Separation Anxiety reeks of Acclaim quickly and cheaply throwing together a Maximum Carnage sequel out there on SNES & Genesis as one last cashgrab before audiences moved on to the 5th generation of consoles.
On the plus side though, "Less Crappy" is a solid third category for future Console War episodes; there are loads of licensed games for both consoles out there that would more than fit that kind of contest.

Separation Anxiety is repetitive and difficult, and there are definitely better 16-bit beat 'em ups out there, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a 'bad' game. I'm a little more forgiving as I got this game as a gift in my Easter basket. I got Out of This World on SNES another year. On a holiday where most kids just got candy, my mom used to fill my Easter basket with budget SNES games and Archie Sonic comics. My mom fucking rocks, I should give her a call.

Out of this World is decent in SNES, is sluggish as fuck compared to the Amiga version (Another World) but still being entertaining.
honestly i think it's one of the better snes games, all beat em ups are repetitive, the gameplay is smooth as hell and the music is top tier, only downside is you fight the same bosses a lot but it never really bothered me playing through the game

Yeah, this game was pretty bland but one thing it had over Maximum Carnage was the 2 player co-op. Maximum Carnage was only single player which for a beat 'em up was kind of a dealbreaker for me and my buddies at the time.

They only thing better about Separation Anxiety was the addition of 2-player co-op.
I am curious about how well was the comic storyline was received by the viewers here. Plus if I wanted a particular game to be remade then this one and Maximum Carnage to be visited in a future Spiderman game.
You know I will be looking forward to The Death and Return of Superman covered here. I recall the movies were released years after this controversial storyline but I liked those alt. Supermen characters like Steel and Eradicator. My surprise is that those games never got covered so I do want know Console Wars opinions on this.
Dude a modern remake of Maximum Carnage would be great, especially if it was on the same engine as Spider-Man PS4. Especially if you could play as the other heroes too.

Great episode. A big first for this show, where both games wound up being "not as good" but "not so bad" as anybody remembers. I don't remember if played this game as kid, but looking at the footage of this game, while it does look graphically good, the game is a real step down from "Maximum Carnage". I may want to check out the comics of "Separation Anxiety" and "Venom: Lethal Protector".

2:22 - Oh my gosh, I have this exact same sentiment! I don't get this obsession with making as many games as possible open world.
Anyway, as for the game covered itself, this was certainly quite a twist to the formula. A shame the game didn't turn out so great but I did actually appreciate the graphics. The bold outlines have a wonderful pop for the characters and the designs are simple enough that even I could draw them.
This is a fun episode to revisit because of all of the little Easter Eggs leading up to the twist. Upon a second viewing, the opening makes it abundantly clear that you do nothing but fight Life Foundation Soldiers the entire time. 😆

This was definitely an unusual video. The two versions of the game are almost as similar as possible (which they should be if they're supposed to be the same game, this is a rare occurrence sadly) and this just seemed more like a review than a comparison. Anyway, I'm certainly not tempted to play this game, now.

Only redeeming factors for this game was the Music (Snes version) and 2 player...but thats not a very high bar to begin with.

I think Virtual Bart would enter in the less crappy category, I mean yeah is not a good game, but I think is the less bad simpson's game from the game consoles
I mean cheap mini games especially at full price is hard to enjoy…granted I loved the tomato toss and the motorcycle and water slide were okay at best.
I'd rather help a thousand New Yorkers find a thousand of their pets then to ever play Separation Anxiety ever again.

Wow, paint Pat green and he's the spitting image of "The Green Goblin". Maximum Carnage is way better, especially for the Sega Genesis, than separation anxiety. Glad you made a 3rd category: Best game, Worst game and Less Crappy. Can't wait to see that pop up more. Amazing vid guys.

Just started watching these videos. It's really interesting to see how different two ports of the same game can be. I'd like to see a video on A Link to the Past vs Crusader of Centy. One was made late in the fourth generation of consoles, but the other is regarded a classic. I think it would be interesting to see how they hold up against each other.
For sounds, SNES has its own jingle for Daredevil where Genesis uses Hawkeye's jingle. Genesis I'd say has the better Carnage
laugh though.
Despite the obvious and pretty big downgrades from maximum carnage. I still love this game and lots of fun with both games throughout my life

I would love to see a video on Wolverine: Adamantium Rage as both versions have their strengths and flaws as in SNES has the better Graphics and Sound, whereas Genesis barely and I mean barely has better Controls, and Gameplay. Basically both versions suck to the point where a updated fan made rom-hack called Wolverine: Adamantium Rage Redux was created and released to fix the issues the original releases had.
Gunna have to look that one up again i rembember it looking good but playing like shit ..
@@Chillywilly8818 Yeah the SNES version had good graphics and sound but awful controls and gameplay with the Genesis version lacking in the graphics and sound but barely having the better controls and gameplay as it still wasn't that good on the controls and gameplay front but wasn't as bad as the controls and gameplay that were in the SNES version.

Whoa, I'd forgotten about this game! I now vaguely recall a lot of hype in magazines, which soon calmed down as soon as this massive disappointment actually released. The name was (years before we got a dog) probably the first time I'd heard the term 'separation anxiety' anywhere. It actually takes a lot of luck and effort to make a decent home port of side-scrolling beat-'em-up and Marvel certainly failed to strike gold twice in a row here.
And yeah, I don't remember there being a lot of difference between the two console versions either, so this was a great choice for this channel to cover.
As for this series as a whole: well, it goes from strength to strength. Not only do we still get great sketches at the start and end of each video, more and more mid-comparison cutaways are sneaking in too, without spoiling the flow of the review. Totally agree about lazy generic mooks and the bad fetchquest:combat ratio in most modern open-world titles. Nice to know the next Spider-Man game will seemingly have PS/Xbox crossplay too. ;)
Lastly, I feel as if I'm a little late to the party again, coming in a few days after the premiere, but like you guys I was also super busy in the couple months leading up to when this episode dropped.
Better late than never.
My cousins had this cartridge (SNES), and actually, we liked and played a lot, but we really always get tired near the last stages. There's a place in the forest, where you can grab lives indefinitely, so we always manages to finish, after grabbing a lot of lives. Not a good game, after all, but back in the day, was serviceable.

I was a huge Spider-Man fan in the 90’s and I loved Maximum Carnage. When I found out a sequel was in the works I began saving my $3 a week allowance in eager anticipation. I picked up the Genesis version shortly after release and instantly regretted my purchase. Although the addition of 2 player co-op was a nice enhancement, every other aspect of this game was a downgrade. My stomach sank knowing I had wasted so many weeks of allowance on such a half assed cash grab.

@@ConsoleWars it was 27 years ago so I’ve moved on. The lesson also taught me to research my game purchases more moving forward. I wouldn’t be disappointed by a game purchase again until GameCube’s Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike which didn’t live up to the previous two games in the series.

In time: all in all, this is a weird game... if not because of the 1 million Life Foundation Soldiers u have to fight, we also have this... weird, blurry look on everything. The first time I played this, was on an Emulator... I had to check if I had turned on one of those "filters" that blur the screen, more than anything else... The characters could have had a sharper look, if u know what I mean... weird!
Aw heck yeah, I knew this weekend was missing something...

When it comes to both these games. I go with the Genesis version mainly because of that intro song. It just goes harder than the snes’ vocalized intro.
The only redeeming quality of the game is that it is 2 player co op. I was really missing that from Maximum Carnage.

I found remember the commercial for Separation Anxiety adapting Emily Dickinson's "parting is such sweet sorrow" as it's marketing tagline. I game itself, let's say it's a good thing I've missed out on this one. Even the commercial for Maximum Carnage was MUCH better.

I remember being so disappointed with Separation Anxiety, that I traded it in for something else. The only good thing about it was the additional co-op gameplay. They one thing Maximum Carnage needed to be great. Everything else was heavily downgraded. Visuals looked worse. Soundtrack was Techno (which was a step down for me). Presentation was abysmal and didn't reflect the comicbook saga. It was like LJN accidentally made a decent game in Maximum Carnage and they got afraid of making a good game that could top it. So they went back to their old disappointing ways with licenses that we love to consume.
Why did you apply a interpolation filter when recording the footage?
console wars: can you do psx vs saturn games? so much unexplored terrotory. Tomb Raider, Exhumed, D, Rayman, duke nukem, hexen, doom, quake, etc....
The music is the clear winner here. Just like wolverine on snes and JLA on sega: bad games with good music.
Id love to see someone mix both versions of these tracks since the sega version has better bass.
