    Remember, a Steam console would make classics going back to the beginning of gaming available to you in a console friendly environment. Its library would instantly be the most vast and deep of any console ever.

      Honestly considering the rate this generation has gone and how Sony cant intelligently spend their money to save their lives, they may replace Sony after that as well. This generation of consoles barring Nintendo has been the worst for both companies. The PS5 has become Sonys worst selling home console in their history. Even combining the xbox and sony consoles this gen, they still dont even outsell the switch. Not even close. We're talking sonys 64 ish mil and microsofts 31 ish mil to Nintnedos 164 Million.

    • @8BitCerberus
      @8BitCerberus 5 годин тому +4

      They did... but there are a couple things of note 1) Proton didn't exist back then. Wine did, sure, but it wasn't built into Steam so getting non-Linux native games running took a decent bit of extra effort. Valve relied on developers to provide Linux-native or SteamOS compatible builds of their games. So the amount of compatible games compared to now, was minuscule. 2) Valve did not build the Steam Machines themselves (outside of a proof-of-concept prototype that they gave to beta participants (I was one) to test) so the entire Steam Machine initiative was 3rd party manufacturers who were even free to NOT ship with SteamOS pre-loaded, or not ship with a Steam Controller if they didn't want to. There was also no limit on what hardware minimums or maximums should be adhered to, so you had hundreds of disparate devices, some shipping with Windows, some with SteamOS, some with very weak Intel iGPUs (remember, this was 2013 timeframe, there weren't any good iGPUs for gaming back then), some with insane dual GTX Titan X's, and prices ranging anywhere from $350 to $5000+. It was an absolute mess of a situation.

    I do want a home setup for the reason being comfort. I deal with multiple chronic illnesses and for the last year I've been bed bound. I finally got a desk to go over my bed and that's helped a lot. I don't have a PC, never have, and just am not a hardcore gamer to justify it, so the Steam Deck is perfect for me. There are times of course where I would like to play on the TV or a larger screen in general and would love the home console setup. I think it's a perfect way in between for people who want to game comfortably and not have to sit at a desk all day, especially if they do that for a living already. I've seen many complain about not having a new gen for the controller and I hope they make it for sure if they plan to implement the home console, that should be pretty well understood. I'm not sure about the VR though unless they go into the direction that Viture is going, that would be the only way to stand apart from other VR headsets that can only be worn for short increments at a time. Viture is not perfect yet and although they have made their glasses to go with Steam Deck, I think Steam Deck could truly find a way to better it even more, even if it takes them all the way until their next gen to do so, which is still years out. Trying to jump on the VR train right now would not only be rushed and foolish but would tarnish a reputation of future VR tech they try later, but less people would be willing to throw down money for it since VR tech is just so expensive. I just don't think we're there yet, technology wise, Viture being the only one to come close, and have been a true game changer. I liked the idea of Steam working on it, but not with the picture they showed, which could easily be a random picture of an average VR headset. As competition goes, I agree, it is good. Valve could take everything Viture has succeeded in and fine tune it, work out the kinks, in design and more. Valve has proved they don't need to collaborate, instead design their own stuff, and learn from other companies' mistakes, and what the consumers really want in a device.

    • @Toxicbee97
      @Toxicbee97 6 годин тому +2

      For $400 you get a very powerful portable device for the price. For the exact same price, you could make a console that can be overclocked further because battery doesn’t matter, they wouldn’t have to pay for things like the screen and speakers and the quality of the material wouldn’t matter. That budget could then be put into improving the specs. I think they could make a very powerful console for a pretty cheap price

    • @TrueBlueMajikDewd
      @TrueBlueMajikDewd 6 годин тому

      It depends on what's inside the console and how much of a loss they're willing to take. Clearly they don't need to spend money on a LCD/OLED screen, or a lithium battery. Switch's technical limits come from the fact that it's a portable (as will Switch 2's).

    If microsoft and valve were to switch places back in 2001, where originally, "steambox" was the one competing with playstation and xplay was the pc storefornt, if they switched, we would be in a MUCH worse state than we are now. XPlay would fail to deliver good software/a usable storefront and SteamBox would not deliver any decent first party titles.

    I think that all VR really needs to see a surge in popularity is comfortable rig. Give us goggles/glasses/helmets that don't look like they could stop a bullet just from being that thick, swap the traditional controls for something more natural like hand gestures and voice commands, maybe figure out something to do with legs so people can move comfortably in the game, and then you're golden. A truly comfortable VR experience would be a game changer. Instead, we get stiff necks, sweaty eyes with racoon lines around them, oh, and the biggest name in the VR market is currently being run by the same people as the most toxic and outdate social media platform on the web (is Facebook worse than Twitter now, I avoid both, so I don't really know anymore).

    I feel like the only other company that can go for it would be Epic Games, but even then, jumping in now would be a bit awkward and late to the party. I don't play anything from them, but it's the only other game store like Steam that could potentially try their hand at it one day, but even then, you can even play games from them on Steam with a work around, and although I know nothing about the new Steam OS yet it would still blow whatever EG could ever come out with, already being this well into its life and creating its reputation for 3 years. I don't know how it all works, but I do know Steam is one of a kind because it's already established with games beyond games, which is the main reason I chose it over the other handhelds like the Rog Ally or Lenovo Legion Go. It's also extremely stable in terms of not constantly throwing out updated consoles, as you've brought out before. You are the one who convinced me to get a Steam Deck and I did and I don't regret it. I do look forward to see their official accessories, because it's about time, Steam Deck can do and be even more than it is right now just by adding a couple of accessories. As you said, it can always be better. I like how they are not a greedy company and established themselves and this handheld PC before throwing all the extra stuff in, a very smart move, business wise.

    To better articulate what I think people REALLY want is "What can I get for $200-$300". Basically a stand alone steamdeck. I think people figured that you can cut costs if you remove a bunch of the things on it (screen, joysticks etc) you can probably shave like $140 off the price of one, especially if you can put your own drive in. Seems like a no brainer honestly. You can actually get some good performance out of the deck, imagine adding a few fans or something you can have a good 60FPS 1080p machine that you don't care if your crackhead roommate steals.

    What's the difference between building a PC that will have future upgradability than buying a Valve console, which is essentially a PC, without upgradability? It will fail like the last time.

    Valve needs to play it smart. The deck *is* a console, it has a dock, and it’s a great normaliser in the chaotic PC space. Adhering to its requirements is a good motivator for devs to ensure wide compatibility. Nintendo did great with the switch, valve should persist and do the same, keep the space clean and encourage devs to make a highly optimised and compatible games. All the deck could use in future versions is an egpu for desktop and then it’s more than a desktop console.

    Interesting that you think Valve would be competing with PlayStation and Xbox wouldn’t. I’d argue that the steam console and Xbox would be more aligned and competitive than they would with PlayStation. Xbox has already said they’re working towards offering a better solution to access Xbox games and Gamepass on all PCs/handhelds. I anticipate Xbox will take that further and open up the ability to access Steam games on the Xbox console. This to me is a sign that Xbox is on the right path. People say they’re dying, but they spent $79B on Activision alone, in context, Sony in its entirety is worth $90B. Xbox is far from dead. That said, this just means a new mainstream competitor has entered the market. Competition always breeds improvements and innovation, i.e. Xbox switching to GamePass and opening up their platform.

    Regarding SEGA...despite all the terrible decisions that SEGA made, they'd almost certainly still be in the hardware game today had Microsoft not decided to brute force their way into the console market. Due to the nature of ecosystems and game libraries, there just aren't four available chairs at the game console table, so SEGA lost their seat.

      @ottosantiagolassus But without Microsoft, SEGA would have limped along as the redheaded stepchild yapping away in the corner. With so much money at stake, do you really think that only Sony and Nintendo would have had the game console feast all to themselves? There's always room for a third console if it's quirky enough, but there's never room for a fourth and MS pushed SEGA to fourth. Don't believe all the 28 year old UA-camrs that weren't there.

    As soon as a Steam home console hits the market everybody can kiss goodbye to PS5 exclusives being ported to PC. Highly doubt Sony would be "giving" away their games to a competitor. Steam should stick to improving the Deck. It's a console that neither competes with Sony/MS nor Nintendo directly. It has its own place in the console world and that's great by itself already.

    Ah. A "Steam Machine" with an AlienWare logo. Didn't we have that (failure) already a decade ago? The Steam Machines are an old idea, Valve has tried it several times and never got a foothold in the market; the SteamDeck was their first attempt that lived longer than six months.

I doibt the Steamdeck will be able to really compete with Switch 2 though. I think companies like Samsung or LG should be able to enter the console market fairly easily if they wanted.

      I really don't see it happening. To me its more like "remember when they made us wear the screen on our heads?" People are typically the most excited when something is new, and lose interest as tine goes by. But even at this point, peoole are not interested with VR. Very few devs make games for them as a result. Even Apple's headset has already halted its production because they're not selling well. Its fun for short bursts. But it's not going to replace playing in front of tv's

    I’ll 100% buy a steam console. I’ve been in and out of gaming the past few years because of a 3k pc setup that crashed do to a faulty pin in a power cable. Before that I was all about PlayStation/Xbox. Now with a decent pc bottlenecked by a shit cpu/motherboard I exclusively play on steam deck and switch. And can’t bare the thought of touching my pc anymore.
    Steam console would bring me back into the “home console” world.

    Wood, it's upsetting that you are still over-exagurating about VR:
    Let me tell you the real reason it will never take off - It's too physically demanding from the player and thus less approachable (even the minor act of moving your head to move the camera). Also, it's just bad for any kind of game that isn't 1st person pov.
    Imagine this, you are a full adult with a very demanding job. You work in the labor force. You don't get much free time to yourself, you got off a very long shift and you just got home and want to relaxing and play some games with the boiz. No one in that position is thinking "hell yeah, lets get physical." Now lets combine that with someone who is more youthful, a child who just got off of school. Unlike an adult, a child is way more energetic, therefore, children would be the consumer (on mass) more likely to adopt vr than adults.
    And when your VR platform has more squeakers than adults, actual adults don't want to deal with that shiz. . . which is what we are seeing now thanks to the meta quest, the VR space being dominated by under age children with the users who can actually pay for the hardware themselves feeling alienated in any online space.
    VR won't take off cause the "concept" of VR is too demanding for general audiences. It works for someone like you because your job isn't that demanding. Not everyone is under that luxury. And when success or fail of hardware is determined by how many people you can get, that "everyone" is a huge factor. A niche consumer-base is always going to fail. And that isn't due to price or feel, that's due to the nature of what the type of experience it even is.

    I just want a Steam OS I can dual boot with Windows. So I can boot into Steam OS for games and Windows for work. I think Steams advantage is trust. They are run by one of the most well known gamers rather than some faceless executive. VR wise right now flat screen to VR mods are the big thing playing some of the most famous flat screen games in VR is a huge deal and an amazing experience. I would love you to comment more on VR, I know it's not the best for views but I'm a huge fan and it would be great to have some videos of your VR experiences.

    I've been looking to replace my PS5 with pc ever since getting my Steam Deck and comparing prices of the games. Also, my controller started drifting and new games I like stayed drying up from Sony. The last game I enjoyed was GOW Ragnarok and Astro. I was less than impressed with Horizon FW. All the other 3rd party games are way cheaper on Steam. My problem has been that every pc UA-camr seems to steer me towards a 1440p 120fps $1500 machine and I'm just not in that world. I think i will just build a budget pc, and I'm done with Microsoft and Sony firing devs left and right because of management decisions.
