Harrison Ford returns as the legendary hero archaeologist in the highly anticipated fifth installment of the iconic “Indiana Jones” franchise, which is directed by James Mangold (“Ford v Ferrari,” “Logan”). Starring along with Ford are Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”), Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”), John Rhys-Davies (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”), Shaunette Renee Wilson (“Black Panther”), Thomas Kretschmann (“Das Boot”), Toby Jones (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Boyd Holbrook (“Logan”), Oliver Richters (“Black Widow”), Ethann Isidore (“Mortel”) and Mads Mikkelsen (“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”). Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. Agree with you nuanced opinion on Helena ENTIRELY. It's not that she's morally ambiguous. I, too, felt a spark of curiosity with the character when she participated in his lecture, and he got so excited, only for it to end with her only caring about money.

As I stated earlier, I had a blast with the movie. Harrison Ford killed it in his final outing of Indiana Jones. His arc was beautiful to watch. Helena Shaw is actually a good addition, as she is a flawed character who grows from a conman and a manipulative person to someone who cares for others above herself, as shown when she saves Indiana Jones from staying in 213 B.C. Teddy was fine, but he felt like a Short Round clone to me. I wish Antonio Banderas had a little more to do, even though I liked his involvement, and the same is true for Sallah. Voller is a great villain who poses an interesting challenge to Dr. Jones. The action scenes were fun despite some CGI being used. The opening sequence is excellent and a great way to kick off the movie, despite the questionable de-aging effects. The underwater sequence was my favorite action scene after the opening. The story was quite interesting and thematically rich. I actually really enjoyed the glimpses of Indy’s life and made him more grounded. It was handled really well. I was fine with the decision to write Mutt out because it made sense with the story and acknowledged the previous movie. The tone was there and there were fun moments of adventure and heroism. While the third act is the weakest part of the movie with an anticlimactic ending to the action, I still enjoyed it and loved the emotional moments. It was interesting seeing Indiana’s reaction to seeing history unfold and how he wanted to stay in the past. Seeing the Nazi plane in Syracuse was cool. Finally, the actual ending of the movie with Marion returning was perfect! I almost cried and the callback to Raiders felt natural. Overall, while it doesn’t come close to Last Crusade and Raiders, I really enjoyed the movie and would go see it again in theaters. I was very satisfied with the movie and the ending of Indiana Jones!

I think James Mangold did a pretty good job, and this does retain my excitement for his star wars film. How ever I would be lieing to say I don't miss Spielberg. He just shot indy better with things like shadows, or transition from younge indy putting on the hat, to old indy.

Spielberg is of his own class. Gonna take Mangold a couple more movies to ever dream of reaching that level imo. He’s a good director, but Spielberg is just that chef that makes everything that much better. Mangold did a decent job for the most part imo

Spielberg heavily praised Mangold and said he thought he was the only one who could make a Indy film but Mangold blew him away. As for Spielberg shooting Indy better...that 100 % wasnt the case with Crystal Skull. That was one of his worst movies and I didnt even hate Crystal Skull but it just felt like a different Indy movie. Spielberg even seemed fed up with Lucas and just gave in to what he wanted. He attempted to not direct Crystal Skull but Lucas convinced him. It felt like two movies. Dial felt closer to the feel of the first 3 movies.

The massive Indy fan in me ended up being fine with it. My overall score would be a 6.5/10. Even if I wasn’t much of a fan of his character, I honestly thought it was horrible how they just killed off Mutt like that. Then again, I guess it worked for what they wanted to explore with Indy in this movie. That’s something I’m still mixed on personally.
The movies pacing is also off, the Waller character, insufferable for most of the movie, comes around at the end, and the CGI replacing the practicality of Indy was an issue I had personally. Ending was a bit weird, but still okay. It was great to hear Williams masterful score again tho. The first 20 minutes are great too. Other than that, the movie is okay imo.
Like Kingdom, I wouldn’t mind giving it another watch, tho it’ll still rarely happen cause it pales in comparison to the trilogy, making this feel like a generic action film, not the premium greatness that is Indiana Jones. The important thing is: it’s not awful like Last Jedi or Rise of Skywalker imo :P it’s as close of a W as it can get to

I hate Disney. I boycotted them for three years and will continue to do so. I saw this film out of respect for my late father, Harrison Ford and the great John Williams. I went into this movie with hate and wasn’t expecting myself to like it…I liked it. It’s nowhere as good as the first three. It’s better then kingdom of the Crystal skull. This film is really a movie on its own. Never got bored once. Helena got annoying sometimes but she eventually realized the importance of family and she needed Indy. He is smart Indiana Jones. Solving puzzles. She especially needs him in the cave scenes. I don’t know what people are smoking. The film was a smooth pace and ended quickly. Everyone was cheering in my cinema. And if we remember, Marion saved Indy several times in the original raiders. Dial of destiny may not win any awards but it is a solid action movie and I smiled through a lot of it. I had no issues with Indy being old. He lost his son and pushed people away. Now he must find himself again and become “Indiana jones” once more. It relates more because I have a grandfather close to 80. He’s the exact same way. I’m not a shill. I hate Disney. But this film wasn’t bad at all.

I'm a huge Indiana Jones fan as well, growing up with the original trilogy. I had a lot of issues with Crystal Skull, but I still enjoy watching it. I feel this movie for the most part corrected the issues I had with Crystal Skull. I really enjoyed it. I agree with a lot of what you said about Helena and Antonio Banderas. I didn't mind sad Indy or that Mutt was killed off. I enjoyed the archeological elements, making it feel like classic Indy. The de-aging wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I tried just not to focus on it, and just enjoy the action and Indy. The voice was a little jarring at first, but I got used to it. I didn't expect them to really go through with the time travel. At first I was kinda taken a back. But when I just accepted it and just went with it, it was fine. I'm glad they didn't leave Indy on the past to die. That would have really disappointed me. In the end, I'm happy with what I got. Never thought I'd see the day when this movie would finally come out and I really enjoyed it. Without cringy moments like Crystal Skull or the weird color that that movie had. This movie looked like an indiana Jones movieand felt like one for the most part. So I'm happy and look forward to seeing it again.

I agree with pretty much everything you said. Crystal Skull was a very flawed movie. Felt like 2 different movies. The colors, the bad looking CGI at times...it hurt the movie. I however didnt hate the movie but things in it I didnt like. Biggest being the horrible tarzan/monkey scene. Dial felt like a movie more connected to the look and feel of the first 3. As good as those, of course not, but it was still a fun movie and honestly at this point those first 3 are so nostalgic to many people that it's hard to recapture that but there are some who have no desire to even think this could be good and have been tearing it down for months. Had their minds made up long ago. It's sad.

Can I just say, I thought the ending was really good, after thinking about it. I like how the Nazis' first attempt to try to travel back to 1939 to usurp Hitler failed epically and they jumped to ancient Rome instead. Wouldn't have made any sense if they mastered the dial on the very first try. And then Indy, the greatest archaeologist ever, gets to witness the history he's only taught and chased after his whole life, in a front row seat. It was a bold move, but I liked Mangold's reasoning behind it. And Indy being reunited with Marion after separating from her after Mutt died in the war was the best happy ending I could think of for Indy in this movie. I know some fans don't agree, and that's fine, but I walked out of the theater completely satisfied.

It was great to see Sallah and Marion one last time, and I think it’s cool that for the first time Indy is tempted by the power of a relic.

This movie had its moments. That's why I don't necessarily hate this film. I've never hated any Indy film. I've seen Indy 1 through 4 so many times including the redheaded stepchild called Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I used to put my 2003 DVD trilogy box set on loop and play it every night for days before falling asleep since my Panasonic DVD player had a sleep mode I'd set for 2 hours.
But for all the great Indy moments this film had, how long did I feel good from it? Maybe 10 minutes from a 2 1/2 hour movie? I know the nuclear bomb scene in Indy 4 was ridiculous but I actually found it fun to watch. And I loved that diner fight between 50s greasers vs. jocks. That silly, stupid fun was missing in this film. Did anybody notice how tall Phoebe was in this film? She's listed as 5'10 and Harrison is listed as 6'1 but she looked taller than Harrison. I guess Harrison has shrunk quite a bit due to his age.
The story is about some random god daughter who Indy hadn't seen in 18 years or since she was 12 stealing an artifact to auction off. And Indy who was just minding his own business since he was retiring as a college professor got caught in the entire ordeal. It was an unnecessary adventure that Indy didn't need to get involved in. For the next 90 minutes, Helena was acting like a jackass. When Indy crashed that vehicle, Helena and that boy just leave him there and go on a different vehicle. I'm like, WTF? In the words of Stephanie Tanner: HOW RUDE!
The moment Helena locked up Indy, I started to see why those plot leaks from over a year were being revealed. Many folks from all over the net were saying Phoebe's character is the worst part of the film and she is! They weren't wrong. Take a the worst parts of Willie Scott from Temple of Doom and Elsa Schneider from Last Crusade. Combine them and Helena is still worse than them. I know Shia is Shia. But even his Mutt wasn't that annoying.
Ray Winstone's Mac in Crystal Skull was the worst character to me prior to Indy 5. Remember him? He kept switching sides. A useless POS character. That's basically Helena Shaw but without a penis. I feel she's more related to Mac. But Lucasfilm decided to make a movie about Mac but turn him into female and watch her run around for 2 hours while putting Indy's life in danger after he already lost his son from Vietnam and was in the process of a divorce.
At least Indy got Marion back at the end. Han and Leia never went back to each other because their son killed Han. Dial of Destiny had its moments but they were just moments. Most scenes were extremely forgettable even the action sequences. Think about this movie by Sunday and you will pretty much forget what the story was all about and the characters. Not the biggest turd I've seen but still a turd.

That was my favorite part of the entire movie, but that movie magic that made the original three films what they are is almost gone entirely from this movie. I mean, he’s amazing in the role, obviously, and I do like how he wants to stay in the past, after everything he’s lost, everything he’s been through, but at the same time, there weren’t any other treasures for them to steal? Like they had to go the time travel route? I thought it was done pretty well all things considered, but c’mon. Now, the opening was amazing. Top tier Indy action. I’m pretty oblivious to bad CGI, so de-aged Harrison Ford didn’t bother me (the train shot did look really bad though). I also thought that the movie focused waaaay too much on Helena. There were times where I was like, this is an Indiana Jones movie, where is Indy? But Harrison Ford really did play “sad Indy” so well. I really saw his emotion shine through the character. And I think James Mangold cared a lot about this movie, and if they let him do whatever he wanted, I think it would’ve turned out just a little bit better. It’s just Kathleen Kennedy’s fingerprints are all over this. John William’s score slaps, obviously. But yeah, it just was kinda boring

I think if they hadn’t shot Indy, him staying in the past would’ve worked. He could’ve stayed and lived in the past and, yes, eventually died there. But not so soon.
Or even better, don’t make Indy so god damn sad. Not everyone has to be sad when they’re old. Let Indy have a relatively happy life but he’s given a chance to find a Time Machine which gives him an arc of having to choose between his normal life and his passion for archaeology. If this is about Indiana Jones retiring, let him have to choose to retire from archaeology in the most intense way: he has to give up a Time Machine.

      1. He couldn’t just stay in the past, that would change the course of history. Most likely, None of the series would happen anymore. Ever heard of the butterfly effect? 2. I agree that would’ve been a more fun way to continue the story, but then he would never even consider staying in the past (which was an obviously stupid idea but he was shot and wasn’t thinking clearly.) 3. It wasn’t really a time machine, it connected two points in time and space. Archimedes wanted to seek help to save Greece from the Roman invaders, so he found a time ‘fissure’ that connected 213BC and whatever time the film takes place in, he didn’t care when or where the help would come from! It’s essentially a compas that points you towards a specific wormhole.

I've been an Indiana Jones fan most of my life and Raiders is my favorite film of all time. He asked me what I thought once we left and I was like "ehhh" because I really didn't know what to say. This was my most anticipated movie of the year featuring my favorite movie character and my favorite actor and just like you Sean I'm very conflicted about a lot of it. I had low expectations of course given the circumstances and nothing will ever top the original trilogy, but even just for a silly little adventure I think I have to say overall it was disappointing and confusing to me. It's not great and it's not awful. It's just there.

I thought Dial of Destiny was good, certainly not perfect or up there with the original trilogy, but still good.
I agree with some of your points about its length, as some of the plot threads involving the CIA, Helena's fiance and Indy being framed for murder really didnt go anywhere and could have been taken out without any impact on the wider film. And the ticker tape parade chase and Moroccan tuk-tuk/car chase action sequences indeed could have been shortened a bit too, they got quite murky.
However i actually thought the dynamite scene was impeccable, and probably the first time i found Helena to be likeable ever since she first betrayed Indy. In some ways she mirrors Indy from Temple of Doom, even having a Short Round-esque sidekick of her own.
I also thought the opening WW2 sequence was nice, the de-aging uncanny valley did occur to me at the beginning but as the sequence kicked off i didnt notice it as much.
Lastly i thought the finale worked, it was so cool seeing some of Archimedes' inventions at work against the Romans. It felt natural for Indy to feel delirious in between having been shot and being saddened about his life and hence wanting to stay, and i too laughed when Helena punched him and it abruptly cut to black.
The final scene where he reunites with Marion was imo as good as it could have been, it was touching.

I relate to how fair you are trying to be with this movie, Sean, but you can't deny the best you can honestly say is you feel "mixed" about the movie. For me, it was great to see Harrison Ford as Indy, but at 80, I had a difficult time for most of the movie suspending my disbelief. Bottomline, this is not a good end result for a summer action film. It's hard to say, but there is no way this movie will cover its cost, and that is a sad ending to the franchise.

Glad you mentioned the rubberband train man. Driving home from the movie I brought that up to my wife. And I correlated my dislike for it with my same criticism about the back of the racing jeep sword fight (and the Tarzan swinging jungle monkeys scene) from Crystal Skulls--that just because you *can* do something and can do it without actually doing the real thing (and I suppose reduce physical harm to any actors) and as a result make something 10x fantastical doesn't mean you should.
The difficulty of sword fighting while balancing on the back of moving jeeps would be hard for even the most adept sword fighters--and there would be a stumble or two--that's what makes it "realistic". So choreograph it as such. We don't need to think Indy or his son is a super hero. Like the original scenes where Indy is being dragged under a van or whatever is freaking awesome and you observe the protagonist doing awesome yet *challenging* things--those "how did I get myself into this" sort of moment--not "o a sword and some monkeys--that would look way cool!"

Idea for next (FINAL?) movie - “Indiana Jones - LEGACY”
Premise: It’s a drizzly, overcast day and we start with a large crate being returned to the wax exhibits of Indy, Marcus etc. in the Museum (as in Raiders) - there’s one empty space. The crate is opened to reveal the statue of Helena Jaw/Feeble Wallet-Drain (could be the original - difficult to tell!). As it’s being placed back on its stand, someone mentions that it mysteriously disappeared one evening; no-one knows what happened to it or how it was returned. Still, no-one actually missed it. At all.
A few days later there’s a family/school tour visiting and 2 of the kids (NOT precocious/dislikeable, instead average, reasonably smart) are rather taken with Indys statue - they having read up on his exploits. They notice the statue of Marcus is holding a drawing/image of the Chachapoyan Fertility Idol (yep, from the start of Raiders) and mention it’s a pity Indy never got to get it back from “That guy to took it”. One of them recalls bits of something (s)he once read about the Idol - “If you hold hands with heart that’s pure, your dearest wishes will endure”. So they hold hands with the Marcus statue and wish Indy had indeed recovered & displayed the Idol. The Marcus statue sheds one, small, unseen tear.
That (stormy) night [natch], Marcus comes alive and meets ‘the Council’ - wax figurines who also have temporary life - they advise him there may - may - be a way to obtain the Idol - snag it, the clues are somewhere about the museum. GO FETCH, Marcus!
Not so easy, considering Indy has said he once saw Marcus getting lost in his own museum - high jinx ensue. But NOT in ‘Night at the Museum’ style, rather something NEW and CREATIVE, involving some brainwork, dangers and IMAGINATION, Disney. Not to mention effective (but not overused) CGI - just enough for the story.
Main movie happens, a few laughs/jumpscares along the way - final scene shows the Indy statue holding a replica of the Idol (OR IS IT THE ORIGINAL?????).
    Just brainchompin’.

"A character arc is the path a character takes over the course of a story. A character's arc involves adversity and challenges, as well as some changes to the character, and ultimately leads to resolution."
"A compelling character arc has a character facing fears and overcoming challenges as the story unfolds, usually resulting in the character’s personal growth.
Indiana Jones in the Dial of Destiny does not have a character arc, or if it does it could generously be called a flat arc. At the beginning of the film, Indy is a broken old man. He's lost his wife and son. He is not respected by the people around him and even his students don't care. He generally has nothing to live for and is unhappy.
Throughout the film, Indy is belittled and disrespected by nearly everyone, but especially Helena. As the adventure continues, Indy doesn't become happier. He doesn't change or grow as he continues on with the story.
At the end of the film, Indy is shot in the chest and pleads with Helena to leave him in the past to die. He doesn't want to return home because he is convinced there is nothing to live for. It is at this point, Indy has not overcome anything. There is no personal growth and he is in fact more defeated than he was at the start.
    Cut to black
Indy wakes up and the final scene results in what I suppose you could argue is a happy ending. I would call it a happier ending, but not exactly an ending that fills me with hope.
That is not an arc. The character stays nearly the same the entire movie and nothing he is involved with is resulting in personal growth. When Marion says, "Are you back?" it means nothing because up until the final moment he wanted to be left alone to die. There was nothing to indicate that he wanted nothing more than to get home to his wife.
I'm very confused why people think Indy had any arc in this.

Did you forget that Indy enjoyed the thrill of adventure? Finding cool artifacts? Didn’t you see him looking at the battle from the plane in fascination? he had everything he could ever want in front of his eyes! He didn’t just want to die! He wanted to experience history in person, speak to legendary characters like archimedes! Keep in mind that he hadn’t had an adventure for 10+ YEARS at that point! Helena gave him a reason to keep being Indiana jones, instead of a grumpy old man that pushed Marion away. So if the film hadn’t happened and Marion just showed up he would probably yell at her and tell her to leave.

I still really enjoyed the movie. I just felt like it was missing some of those key Indy tropes. He doesn’t swing from his whip at all…

I think what made it weird, was how underwhelming the Syracuse setting was and how they never got to hype this timeperiod enough. Going back there was a bit silly and honestly once you put it all down, it makes no sense. He feels like a character much more connected with other people and other time periods and this made for me the biggest change. I dunno. Time travel was not bad as a concept for an Indy, but the way they implemented it was not good.

I have to say I enjoyed the movie and it was a fun ride but also there was a part of me thinking how there was a good indie 5 story out there that would’ve had the world go Wow
That said, I do disagree with a couple of these takes. I don’t understand how the phoebe character caused the death of those people. She was just looking at the artifacts with dr jones. And I think your a little to tied to how Indiana is perceived and that he cannot be sad in any way.

My family and I actually liked the movie, despite it being a tad too long.
Lots of UA-camr hatred towards it, and towards just about anything that Disney & Kathleen Kennedy has touched. And mostly for good reasons.
But this latest Indy film was as far-fetched as all the other films. But I wasn't ever truly bored, nor roll my eyes at his sidekicks. Most sidekicks in superhero or action films are horrible. But, surprisingly, I didn't find myself irritated at Phoebe Fleabag Waller-Bridge or the young boy actor.

It definitely had a dour tone and lacked some of the fun of the original 3 (which, granted, were sometimes very silly but seemed to strike a more balanced tone). Almost felt like a Batman and Robin to Batman Begins kind of shift but without the benefit of having a naturally darker character or younger actor to make it work so well. 7/10

Dial of Destiny is mostly a frustrating and disappointing watch, but with some fun nostalgic moments for the die hard fans!
I personally actually prefer Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and that’s saying a lot…
It’s a shame that Steven Spielberg and George Lucas didn’t come back to be involved in Indy’s final adventure, but I think James Mangold still does a good enough job.
I think the problem is Disney and Lucasfilm though…
They did it with Star Wars, Disney are doing it with Marvel and now it’s happening with Indy.
I don’t even need to explain what I mean because I think the majority of fans know full well what I’m talking about…
For me, Dial of Destiny is The Last Jedi of the Indiana Jones franchise.

I remember being so excited to see Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and then being disappointed. However, I do find some enjoyment in the movie, it just wasn't great.
Seeing Harrison Ford play this character one last time, I was very excited again, but my expectations were low.
I seen Dial of Destiny last Saturday. I did enjoy it more than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but I didn't like seeing Indiana Jones in such a sad state.

*Indiana* *Jones* *and* *the* *Vile* *Of* *Kennedy*
Or isn't Kathy's last name already Marshall since being married to Frank?
I finished watching it about 5 hours ago. Um, it's probably the WORST Indiana Jones film I've ever seen. I HATED Helena Shaw who started the entire messy adventure. And here's the thing, I actually find Phoebe Waller-Bridge attractive the same way I find Daisy Ridley attractive. Phoebe reminds me a little bit of Elisabeth Moss from the side. Peggy Olsen was one of my favorites from one of my favorite shows of all-time: Mad Men.
Were there good things from it? Sure. Probably seeing Karen Allen again at the end. I thought the first moment when it felt like an Indiana Jones movie happened when Indy goes to Tangiers. It's actually shown in the trailer. Indy takes out his whip only for the folks drawing their guns at him. That's very Indy-like. The first 15 minutes with the de-aged Harrison wasn't really that exciting at all. I thought the setting being in 1969 was cool too. Some of the scenery in 1969 Morocco was nice especially the auction scene. And hearing John Williams' music throughout.
My biggest issue really comes from Helena. I didn't like how she betrayed her own godfather to save her ass. She locks the gate. Indy gets captured. Then after Antonio Banderas' character gets killed, you see her laughing on the boat after they escape because she remembered to bring dynamite. She put Indy in a bad situation that could've got him killed but had his friends killed. Not to mention that cold mfer with the mustache killing innocent school workers.
I wish Banderas' character was there longer. He would've livened up the group. The kid was Helena's own version of Short Round. But my biggest issues really comes from Helena and the many dark scenes when they went underwater and in that cave. I was ready to doze off being so dark. I'm still not sure how to feel with that time travel shit. That's too much like Indy & Helena's Excellent Adventure time traveling from a plane.
When I was walking out of the theater, some kid who sounds about age 10-12 walking behind me was telling his mom he liked it. But the only thing he didn't like was the time traveling stuff. His mom actually enjoyed that part. I'm still not sure where I am with that. Indy is better without any alien and time travel shit. It doesn't need to go sci-fi. Indy was better with more grounded stories. Not alien/time travel BS. The film's budget was close to $300M. Where exactly did that go? Did the extra $100M go to that Ancient Greece scene? It didn't look like a $300M movie.
No issues seeing Indiana Jones, Sallah, or Marion again. Classic characters forever. Didn't mind hearing old Harrison's voice with a de-aged Indy. It did take me out for a moment but I eventually settled in with the dubbing. No issues listening to the GOAT composer's legendary music. Issues with Helena being such an asshole character only to discover her selfish ways while in Ancient Greece, Mads being such a bland villain, pacing, story, and way too many dark scenes. Most aspects at making a good movie.
It was also devoid of humor. Harrison is naturally funny as Han and Indy and we didn't get much here. When Helena tries to be funny, the jokes falls completely flat because you keep thinking what a selfish c*nt she is for stealing ancient artifacts only to sell them off in auctions because she's in some huge debt. She got innocent people killed. The character named Klaber, is a big POS killing innocent people including ancient Greeks from an airplane. I wish he had a far better death than that plane crash.
What's with Han Solo and Indiana Jones dealing with DIVORCES later in their lives? Portrayed by the same actor but these iconic characters are going through a divorce, or in Han's case, he was already separated from Leia. At least seeing Karen Allen again gave some hope that it looked like Indy and Marion were going to reconcile.
Here's the irony to all this.. I heard more clapping for this film after it finished than for The Flash. I did not clap. I was actually a little relieved it was over as it's about 15 to 30 minutes way too long. And the biggest laugh I heard for the entire film came when Helena punched Indy. I'm not sure I have the urge to rewatch this. Doesn't seem highly replayable for me.
As bad as Crystal Skull was and it had some of the worst scenes for the entire franchise, it still had some fun to it. That Spielberg charm. We see Indy in 1957. The pacing was faster. Shia wasn't that terrible as Mutt. Harold Oxley added some fun to it. The banter between Indy, Marion, and Mutt was fun. Blanchett did the best she can do from that script and her fake Russian accent while having some over-the-top cartoony personality that Mikkelsen's character lacked which shocks me because Mads was fine as a villain in Doctor Strange.
Dial of Destiny basically made a turd like Crystal Skull look decent by comparison by lacking the stupid, silly fun! Cate squeezing a giant ant with her thighs was really stupid but stupid fun. There was a scene inside the caves that I wanted Helena to be killed. She basically got Indy framed for murder at that school and got a couple more of his friends killed on the boat. But I guess she flipped to the good side the moment Indy prevented them to kill her.
What a mess this was. Thanks, Kathleen! You were great in it! You're now the worst character for this entire franchise. Worse than Elsa Schneider who at least had a decent heart by getting Walter Donovan killed. Worse than Mac who kept betraying Indy. Worse than Willie Scott who was only annoying but not a selfish asshole like Indy's "god daughter" looking to steal stuff and auction them off. She acted more like Mac's daughter than Basil's.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: 6/10
Another soulless cash grab devoid of that Indy humor and charm. There were many times it didn't feel like an Indiana Jones film at all. It felt more like Indy was guest starring for Phoebe's movie. Helena started all the unnecessary trouble for Indy who was already retiring from teaching. Unnecessary trouble for this unnecessary movie.
For the first two hours of the film, I felt Helena Shaw was the real villain. Kathleen's own facsimile is in this franchise. Yet, she's supposed to be the protagonist next to Indy. She's 30-years-old and acting like she's still in high school believing she's so smart, funny, and charming. All the plot leaks about Phoebe's character from over a year ago were sadly true. She ruined the entire movie for us.
I know people shit on Rey from The Force Awakens but at least Rey was a good person. She didn't have any selfish agenda. She wasn't inconsiderate. For 2 hours, there was nothing redeemable about Helena Shaw, a smug, double-crossing thief, and selfish capitalist. It took the last 20 minutes to discover what she was doing was wrong.
Dial of Destiny is still better than Quantumania but that's still not saying much.
Worst Characters Ever In Indiana Jones
    1. Helena Shaw
    2. Klaber (F this guy!)
    3. George "Mac" McHale (annoying and useless)
    4. Mola Ram
Dial of Destiny now has the 2 worst characters from the franchise surpassing Indy 4's Mac.
Best Characters Ever In Indiana Jones
    1. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr.
    2. Henry Jones Sr. (RIP)
    3. Marion Ravenwood (moved up three spots)
    4. Short Round (best sidekick Indy ever had)
    5. Sallah El-Kahir
    6. Marcus Brody (RIP)
    7. Henry "Mutt" Williams/Jones III (RIP)
    8. Harold Oxley
    9. Willie Scott
    10. Elsa Schneider (RIP)
I will forever love Indiana Jones but it doesn't mean I have to regard Indy 4 and 5 as canon.
Ranking Some Bad (6/10 Or Less) Movies
    Jurassic World: Dominion
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
    Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
    Attack Of The Clones
    Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
    Solo
    Batman & Robin
So Indy 5 for me is between the two worst Jurassic films of all-time. I enjoyed Love And Thunder and Bullet Train more than this Lucasfilm disaster. I did like Indy 5 more than She-Hulk, The Book of Boba Fett, and The Rings of Power. Again, that's not saying much. From DoD to dud.
I think what saved it from being Batman & Robin level was because I love Indy so much. I love John Williams. I love the franchise. It's very dear to my heart like it is for a lot of people. And seeing Sallah and Marion one last time helped. Seeing Indy and Marion re-enact that scene in Raiders before they kiss was very, very sweet.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is not the worst movie I've seen in 2023. Quantumania clearly takes that honor as the Attack of the Clones of MCU. Indy 5 is probably not making my top 20 favorites of this year and I haven't even seen 20 movies from this year yet. Appreciate Top Gun: Maverick and Cobra Kai for being the only ones doing this 80s nostalgia right.

Man, I wish that they would have left him in the past. Such a bold, new, and romantic idea. I really liked that idea of every historians dream is to live the history they have studied. It was Indiana's true wish.
That would have given this sequel a justification. But instead they went with a sappy ending that in the end, just felt so uninspired. Honestly, ruined the movie for me. The third act was really the only part I enjoyed, and it ended with such a kerplunk.
I also felt like the death of his son was just them trying to find a way to write LaBeouf out of the story. Idk if it was meant to be central to the arc. But that really just speaks to the overall clunkiness of the plot.
The twist of the time traveling device only going back to one moment in history, I actually thought was quite clever.

Temple of doom was based on Hindu belief , kali is the god of death. Also it is the 3rd most believed religion the other two were Christianity and Catholicism which were represented in the other 2 films. If a film were based on judiasim it would have made sense. The newer films don’t have a religious foundation.
