I’m used to seeing your really fast time lapse videos so this was a treat to be able to see your process and hear you explain it! It’s a beautiful portrait!
I'm so happy to see another sketchbook and chill episode! Who knew watching gouache layers dry was so satisfying. Another beautiful portrait. I already can't wait for the next one.
Thank you Jessi appreciate that! The timelapse really helps you see the color shift after the paint dries but in the moment it can be tough to get used to 😂
I have never been compelled to become a patreon for any other youtuber but the minute I heard you say you had one, I never clicked a link so fast lol. I appreciate all the art videos you create for us on there so thank you. It takes a lot of time and effort to make extra content for patreon so thank you!
I found your channel looking for more black youtube artist, and I LOVE your style!! Going to be creating more then just art process videos and I wanted the first one to be about black artist on youtube and I will for sure be adding you to my list. I will also be following your art journey!! So happy I found your channel and cant wait to see whats next! Please reach out if you ever want to collab!!
Very informative video! I just painted my first gauche portrait without watching any tutorials beforehand and I just ended up painting with them similar to how I would with watercolors… it still turned out nice but I want to learn how to take advantage of the uniqueness of gauche and this video was perfect. Thank you!
Great video man. It's cool seeing the whole process from rough sketch to finished piece. I like how you just throw down the white to immediately establish the highlights. Also the rhyme at the end 👌
Thank you appreciate that! The white also helped build up the opacity of the paint and helped to blend in the other colors as well. It was an experiment but I think I'll keep it in mind for future paintings👍
Thank you! I usually frame behind glass for protection. I haven't actually tried it myself yet, but Lena Rivo has a tutorial on how she uses varnish to seal gouache to frame without glass: ua-cam.com/video/7YefJEGvYtY/v-deo.html
While someone might think step one isn’t important I wish they could’ve witnessed what I screwed up on last night. If I’d followed step one I would’ve gotten closer to the layout I wanted. It was like watching the light turn green and driving off into a ditch. Thanks for step number one. Sometimes the obvious is overlooked.
I love your videos JMR! Please keep posting! It's so cool you're accepting commission requests on your website. Please update the shop too and whether or not you ship internationally. Sending some spring vibes from Australia. :)

What’s the name of those metal clamps you use? My regular clamps are trash when holding the paper from warping
Bulldog clamps, you can find them at most art stores for around a dollar or so
6:26 I like you style
Love your paintings and sketches! What paper is that? What sketchbook do you use? Any recommendations on the GSM and grain?
Strathmore tan mixed media, its 300 GSM and smooth, link in description if interested 👍
JMR have you went to art school? regardless your art is very amazing and I'm beginning to consider art school too!
👍🙏💙
3 did not like the video? I don't understand why wouldn't they like it.
It could be any number of reasons but it's all good either way, everything doesn't always resonate with everybody 👍
