Bruh I’m so glad i stumbled into ur videos, Using a complimentary base color to desaturate the skin tones is GENIUS
Thank you! I definitely didn't invent that technique though haha
That’s how I found him to crazy
You didn’t create the technique but you made it make sense!! Thanks 🙏🏾
Chemistry PhD graduate?
That would be Dr. Bruh, wouldn't it?😁
I've been trying to figure out undertones for skin for ages, and when you explained it in relation to the colorwheel everything finally clicked. Thank you! That was really super helpful.
I like how genuine you sound in your video. Almost like we’re having a conversation instead of listening to a scripted scene. Your art is beautiful and your dedication to the craft is obvious in your work! Love it!!
I love watching your timelapses, but the voice over was a great insight to your process! 👍
Thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
@@jmr_art no prob, can't wait for more videos!
Just getting back to gouache....what a fantastic medium! Will try it on toned paper next, I t seems to make sense. You are a lovely bloke my friend , and the voice overs make a positive addition. Love you mate ! And thank you.
your channel deserve more recognition 😩😩😩
Amazing as always! Voice over please with tips and tricks how to become better in portraits and gouache.
Blocky style is therapeutic and makes you confident of your art, if anyone is thinking of starting to do it , just start because I am sure your inner self needs it, You will get motivated by watching your favorite artists that use this style!💓
Just gorgeous loose style, you’re a star! I love the voice over too, works perfectly! Thank you so much, you’re so inspirational! X
Thank you so much, appreciate that!
I just wanted to say that I love all three of these portraits, they are so pretty! But I especially love the second one of the African woman. I just love the line of her forehead leading to her nose and then her lips, it's just really pretty! And I love how you showed the texture of her hair and left it a bit of a blue color, just really pleasing to look at. Great job!
I absolutely love your art style and blocky/visible brush strokes in general because it's more painterly. while hyper-realism has its place, the brush strokes give finished pieces texture and a human feel, plus you can choose your strokes to evoke a certain mood. And blocky means DRAMA!
ps i feel it, i'm still trying to find my place as an artist too, so i'm currently trying a little bit of everything
Thank you appreciate it! And yea definitely, there is so much out there all left to try, can be somewhat overwhelming 😅
Yes i love the voice over and love to hear you explain your process as well as see you do it!
the voiceover’s really neat, your mic’s clear and nice :) keep up the great work!
Thank you very much!
FYI, Dorland's Wax Medium is amazing for sealing gouache paintings. I love it for waterproofing my gouache paintings. Game changer.
I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW UNDERRATED YOU ARE. YOU'RE MY FAVORITE ARTIST AND YOU'RE THE PRIMARY REASON WHY I BOUGHT GOUACHE ONLINE! (I'm waiting for it to arrive 😁)
nice pfp, is that MD? 👀
The video was very informative and enjoyed watching the paintings develop especially with the different undertones. Please post more videos!
I wish i could draw and paint like you. You,re so talented omg. I love you,re portrets. Everyting you paint and draw is magic
Thank you! You will discover you own unique way to draw and paint if you keep on going 😁👍
Hello JMR art.Thank you thats so kind of you. And thank you for reply my question. I hope you do more if you have the time. Greetings from the netherlands
Wow!!! You’re sooo talented! I’m glad I found you on UA-cam. You make gouache look so easy. Keep the format...it’s great!
A brilliant Gouache demo. One of the best I have seen on UA-cam. Great tips which are not specific to your style and can be used by anyone. Thanks.
Your portraits are amazing-beautifully sculpted forms! Thanks for your video.
I really enjoyed the Q&A voiceover in this video. Almost every time I had a question, it got answered. 🤭
Digging the big bold brush work. Confident shapes and tones. Adds abit of 'life' to the overall look.
Such a great and helpful video, that definetily inspired me to do some portraits with Gouache again. And your techniques are so unique and interesting.
Thank you very much and I'm glad you found it helpful!
Agree 😆👍👍👍
I could watch your vids all day
Great paintings, very helpful video. I normally paint with watercolor and trying to learn gouache. Difficult transition for me. This is one of the better portrait painting gouache videos I have seen. Thanks!
Your paintings help me understand how to paint more than landscapes in gouache. I'm new to the medium and haven't painting my first gouache portrait, but will very soon. Thanks!!
I hope you have fun with it, portraits can be tough but also fun!
Thanks!! It is certainly a challenge. 🤗
I appreciate the tone of your voice, so mellow and relaxed. Using a flat brush is interesting. I like your blocking style of painting- I’m going to try it out.
What a beauty. How well the mood and emotions of the girl are conveyed. Her joy and fun. Wonderful picture. Talented.
Thanks. I learned a lot from this video. Especially about the blue/green underpainting.
super portraits, well done
It makes me so happy that such a powerhouse in the Gouache community is a black man
This is such a good video! It's really nice to watch a timelapse of someone who clearly understands gouache as a medium, a great number of the popular videos are watercolor artists attempting to use a brand new gouache set just like they would watercolor, which isn't very helpful nor does it turn out as well.
Thanks alot! Honestly that how I first started out using gouache as well since I learned watercolor first. Took me quite a bit of time to get used to using more paint to take advantage of the opacity of gouache 👍
@@jmr_art That makes sense! I'm an acrylic painter by nature, so I was afraid of gouache at first because watercolor technique doesn't come naturally to me. It truly is a mix of the best qualities of both.
I am delighted with your 'laid-back' instructions and tips, look forward to more of your talented work on videos. Keep going, keep inspired with every piece. You are quite gifted and dedicated.
Thank you for the kind words!
when I saw this video I was like "oh the artsyle is exactly im looking for" it was just that, but just a couple of minutes, I quickly zoomed to follow his Instagram 😆😆
Thank you so much!
I just wanted to say I love your videos! thanks for posting!
Your portraits are simply exquisite. Thank you for explaining the complementary underpainting so clearly.
enjoyed the content very much, please continue what you do!
Just found your channel, can’t wait to check out the rest of your videos! 🙌🏻✨
I am learning more from this one video than I have in months, you're so cool, such a great teacher
Thanks a lot for the video! I liked both the music only and the voice over videos. I think the voice over is good when the artist has sometimes worth hearing to say; otherwise, it becomes noise. I love you paintings and style.
Thanks for the feedback!
Just found your videos. I love your approach and style to gouache portraits.
I love your drawings and your technique! I was wondering if the next one you could show us your palette too, how you mix the colors and all. Thanks! :)
Thank you for posting and sharing your process! I just started getting into gouache and really love how you push the limits of this medium. Super inspirational!
Love your work. I see it a lot around but never knew you had a UA-cam channel so when I ran across this video, I instantly subscribed!
Thanks for checking out!
This is always my go to video for helping me remember how to use gouche when I haven't painted in a while. Great job! 👍🏻
this was beautiful to watch. i learned a lot - thank you
I love watching you paint, love your content and your voice-over. Your art inspires me to keep trying with gouache (I seem to do okay with watercolor, but struggle with gouache). I really like your use of underpaintings and also the tiling method with which you apply the gouache. I sincerely hope that you continue to post your demos to social media so that your fans (like me 😊) can observe and enjoy the benefit of your wonderful gifts. Thanks for sharing, Jordan. ❤️
Omg great idea with binding at staples!!!!! Definitely stealing that from you. Beautiful pieces too ❤️. I love that u show us the reference photos and you mix up the styles.
Your work is so pleasing to look at - love your style. Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Love the voiceover, my man. You’ve got a really natural and soothing sound. I hit the back button a few times just because I enjoyed hearing the way you express yourself. Thank you for continuing to share your work, your process and yourself.

Beautiful work. I don't find many good gouache videos but this one was a treat. I'll be subbing.
You are my favorite artist on social media. Watching you pqint makes me feel like I can be a great painter too, if I keep working at it. Please make more videos!
Your technique is wonderful. Subscribed. Cheers from Norway.

jmr_art Jordan Rhodes You definitely mastered using big brush sizes. It makes it even faster to finish a piece. Saved you a lot of time to keep switching 🥺 I’m a fan here.

I just found this video and loved watching. I really like the Q&A format. Thank you for creating!
I love your style and how you used the undertones! Also LOVE that you included different skin tones in this video! ❤️
OMG! So awesome. I am an absolute beginner and your style is exactly where I want to be. Maybe in 10 years but hey...at least I am trying! Thank you for the inspiration.
Keep pushing you got it, you'll be surprised how much you grow just by sticking with it 👍
Wonderful advice and paintings just beautiful.💜
Thank you for your great video! I really appreciate the fact that you mix more naturalistic skin tones! !
when I paint with black and white I always lay down a colored wash with my watercolors first, that way the finished painting looks more interesting.
Am currently experimenting with slight gradients and washes with slight color differences as the underpainting
Very strong paintings, good explained same time! Thanx!
Amazing ! Thank you for sharing 🙏🙏🙏😊😊😊
This was great thank you for sharing! Love hearing the Q&A. I’m struggling to find my voice/message as an artist so it’s good to know I’m not alone!
Thank you so much for such a quality video and experience. I like how you don’t waste our time By using a time lapse and voice over! I can’t believe you don’t have full confidence as I’m looking at your work and I feel you have arrived! I’m a fan. Thanks again for the free tutorial and answering questions of us beginners.
Haha I wonder if that feeling ever goes away, maybe one day. But thanks alot for watching!

Thank you, mate! This video was exactly what i needed this evening. Cheers
Amazing technique!! Love your art, it motivated me to get my first gouache set :)
New subbie! Your videos are a whole vibe! 👌🏾
Delightful channel. Excellent voice and the possibility of understanding the process.
For me, it's essential with calmness versus speed. Also that you care for the viewer.
So I hope you have time to do some drawing videos on how to create form, structure, and rhythm when creating the head or other features of human body.
Thank you 🌱
So enjoyed watching. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow! You’re talented! I’ll be subbing now. I did a project once in the complementary colors of blue and orange. An acrylic still life on canvas board. It turned out okay. I liked it. I still have the piece, leaning on my living room wall.
I’m truly enjoying watching you paint and answering questions. This is awesome!
