How about the Strike series: Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, Soviet Strike, Nuclear Strike and then a teaser trailer for Future Strike. Or the Commandos series. That ended with the fourth game: Commandos: Strike Force.
I love those games, unfortunately EA owns the Strike IP... Yeah, no thank you. So much greed and political baloney EA would shove into a new Strike game...
My only issue with it is the developers. They've only made one game before, and it was a dodgy parody game that looked like pit fighter. Actually also I'm kinda weired out by the trailer being all about anime boobs. This isn't a game for horny weeaboo teens, it's for people in their late 20s and early 30s who loved the original games, so why on earth are they advertising it like that? I hope I'm wrong and it's a brilliant game. But I doubt it'll be anywhere near as good as Streets of Rage Remake, which is the definitive way to play the first 3 games. They should have let those guys develop 4 instead
There are better Street of Rage 4 fan made that surpass that of the trailers. I don’t like the art style of it. It looks to flat, and cell shaded like comic zone.
Glad they're not getting Secret Level in to make it as we all they're track record with classic side scrolling brawlers Golden Axe and Final Fight. Go 3D and strip out the 2 player co-op. I mean it's bad enough killing one franchise but to kill another by doing the exact same thing, who says lightning can't strike twice
The 2D art style looks great in my opinion. I can't really think of any modern 2D games that have gone with a highly detailed 2D art style. It seems they're all either inspired by manga or Western cartoons.
It's actually still a city...they took advantage of the coincidence and sold allot of tacky Obama themed stuff. Don't know if there is a Trump city in Japan
Thank you guys so much! I always remembered this arcade game intro from my childhood that I saw just once and I could never forget the cut-scene. I knew that I would stumble across it on one of these channels one day and now I did! It was Samurai Showdown. I always remembered the exact way the scenery came apart after his slash attack in the intro. I never had access to arcades as a kid; so I saw this one on vacation and it just lingered in my mind forever as this obscure unknown video game with super advanced graphics, since at the time I thought SNES was pretty much all there is :D Love these moments when dusty old memories of something that fascinated you as a child resurface and are finally explained.
Exactly why doesn't it work? Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle came out in 1989. SMW came out at the tail end of 1990, and made Enchanted Castle look like a primitive pile of crap, especially given their gameplay similarities. Now, I'm not at all saying that's what spurred Sonic, which was already in development at the time, but it was a big nail in the franchise's coffin.
Enchanted Castle reviewed badly even when it was new. It played horribly compared to the best NES, Master System and PC Engine platformers, then Revenge of Shinobi and Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion made Alex Kidd look even worse before SMW turned up.
I was ready to be annoyed as Fighting Force was one of my favorites back then, but I think your thoughts on it were completely fair. While no SOR, it felt pretty impressive or at least fun back then.
I distinctly remember the Dinosaurs from Turok attacking the humans. It was like half the fun of it, using cheats to become invincible and then making them wade into each other.
Turok Evolution was the franchise killer of the original N64 Turok games/dev. Turok 2008 on 360/PS3/PC actually sold well and was going to get a sequel. Unfortunately, the developer was owned by Disney who shut down all the game studios not long after Turok's release. I grew up with the N64 games, but man have they aged terribly. The death animations and some of the weapons are still awesome though. By the way, I keep having audio glitches while playing a used copy of Turok on ps3. Did you guys have similar issues while playing it? I don't recall the audio cutting out in the 360 version I played a lot.
I'm glad to see a new Samurai Shodown game, especially with the graphics ^_^ For some, it might not be a big deal, but SNK dug themselves OUT of financial troubles and are now back in full swing. The King of Fighters 14 was a good game and it gave them to edge to proceed further.
Been a streets of rage fan since my brother got it for Christmas back in the early 90’s. The sound track to the first two games has shaped my music taste to this day. Best OST behind Hotline Miami in IMO. I hope the new game does the franchise justice. Love your show boys, spot on as always.

Little disappointed you didn't go into more detail on the GBC Turok games. I've always been curious about them, because honestly... they look pretty fun to me! Plus, they have some of the best soundtracks on the entirety of the GBC, thanks to the underrated composer Alberto Jose Gonzalez, who was sort of like Tim Follin's unofficial protege. Turok 2 GBC in particular has some absurdly good music for the system. It's too bad Gonzalez mostly composed for shovelware licensed games, as basically every soundtrack he ever made was gold -- though fortunately, he's still around and composing chiptunes to this day, with his most recent one being for the 2017 homebrew MSX2 and ZX Spectrum 128 game "The Sword of IANNA," which is an excellent Prince of Persia-like cinematic platformer set in a universe reminiscent of Conan the Barbarian. Anyway, I can't remember if you included this in one of your two previous Franchise Killers episode -- you probably did, honestly -- but if not, I recommend talking about the Jumping Flash series in a future episode, as it's really sad to see such a promising franchise end with something as blah as Pocket MuuMuu. Might also be worth looking into the Clock Tower series, though you could technically say that that franchise lives on through NightCry.
Ah the ol' gritty SOR3 soundtrack. I'm in the minority that actually loves it. When you factor the original Japanese story, the soundtrack is very appropriate. A freaking nuclear bomb just went off, you just disarmed one, but there's several more out there and you don't know where they are. Lots of panic and uncertainty. But yes, always play BK3 over SOR3 unless you crave a ridiculous challenge.
I just got done playing with all 3 again and I gotta disagree with game sack completely. I actually really liked the soundtrack in #3. The music fit very well for the game and I felt the gameplay was more solid than the previous 2. I really enjoy #2 as well. I' have to give it to #2 for best music out of the trilogy, but #3 is not nearly as bad as they are making the music out to be.
Samurai Shodown series is one of my favorites by SNK.I never played SS-SEN but i've heard how terrible it is.From what i understand sen wasn't even in house, snk just out sourced it.I just hope this new samurai shodown that snk is making will have tight game play.

Streets of Rage 1 is the best when playing two player. I've never enjoyed a retro game like that ever. Me and my cousin completed it countless of times. As for single player, no doubt SOR2 beats 1 anyday. As for the music, I like the soundtrack on all three of the games. They all had their charm.
Streets of Rage 2 will always be my favorite, but at least the 3rd game had some unlockable characters and multiple endings. But the big issue for me was no Max to slap fools around with.

Now all you need to discuss in terms of franchise killers is Capcom’s seminal jrpg series Breath of Fire. Particularly Breath of Fire VI being only released in Japan and being a crappy mobile spin off title.
Man I love the timing of this episode as both Streets of Rage and Samurai Shodown got new entries coming XD. The perils of batch episode producing I guess haha but regardless great episode guys and I reckon the revived franchises episode would go down well
As I recall, Enchanted Castle has a story. It's little more than "Alex has to travel to a planet of rock paper scissors to save his father, who was actually on vacation the whole time".
didn't know that a ps3 rocket knight game even existed... konami should have honestly advertised more in my opinion. I'm surprised that they also haven't even tried to revive bloody roar as well, seeing as how their is a discord server thats dedicated to it and it would give them a fighting game to compete with the fact that everyone's basically releasing a fighting game now. glad that samurai shodown and streets of rage are returning though
I'm not sure spending more on advertising for a lackluster downloadable follow-up to a franchise that few people remember would have been a good idea. It's a shame though, I really looked forward to that title until I actually got to play it. Rocket Knight Adventures was so great and is an essential Mega Drive title IMO.
I'm hyped for Streets Of Rage 4. The people behind it also made a remastered version of Wonderboy 3: The Dragon's Trap. That game both looks and sounds beautiful.
Gamesack are influencers. Even before episode being published companies knew about it and tried to compensate. If this is how it works do episode about Suikoden and Grandia series. Maybe those will be back to? Great video as always
@MrJechgo F-ZERO GX actually got very high review scores. NGC October 2003 (UK magazine) gave it 93%! Sadly the sales of the game compared to Mario Kart: Double Dash were low, which is a shame as SEGA did a fantastic job. F-ZERO GP Legend on the other hand got very low scores and sold poorly. It's not a bad entry to the series and I like how they took GX's features but used the SNES/MV mode 7 racing. They were just very ambition saying there were 30 racers were really they were only 4. F-ZERO Climax is pretty much improves on F-ZERO GP Legend. The Survival Mode (more like doing Missions) and course editor were fantastic editions. The sales were very low and the fact the NDS was soon to eb released, no one really cared. The lack of interest for the series and low sales will mean Shigeru Miyamoto won't care when Mario Kart can rack in easy money.
i don't get it. For me Streets of Rage 3 is the best game in series, followed by SoR 2 and then SoR 1. The music is really unique and cutting-edge hardware wise, i like it a lot.
The Japanese version is great, but the western streets of rage 3 just sets the difficulty too high, which doesn't make it hard it just makes it boring. Damage-sponges are the worst thing you could put in a beat em up, wailing on hundreds of identical enemies for like a minute each before they die is simply dull. The new streets of rage isn't going to be limited by cartdrige space so perhaps there'll be much more enemy variety, more enemies on screen at once, and hopefully a bigger moveset for each character like a lot of modern beat em ups are doing with full combo systems and special moves almost like a fighting game.
The music was interesting and technically impressive, but didn't have the memorable melodies and beats of the previous games. Colors all looked weird and graphics were kind of grainy in general. I think they went for a more realistic style, but the Genesis didn't really have the color palette to pull it off. Plus, Sega of America butchered the Japanese version in multiple ways, from lame Nintendo style censorship, to messing with the balance in order to make the game more difficult, to simply stupid (changing Axel and Blaze's clothing colors). The game was also $80 too due to the 32 Mb cart. Being a huge fan, I bought it knowing what to expect (thanks to Game Fan), still enjoyed it, but couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed. Best way to play it today is the Japanese version with the English translation hack.
I'd be down for a 'Resuscitated Franchises' episode.
Especially since there's a new Samurai Spirits/Shodown coming out
neoVERSI, Samurai Spirits? Is that a regional name?
Sega Sonic Is the name in Japan.
i’d go with ‘Resurrected Franchises’ thnk u
Tomb Raider would be an obvious pick for this list.
Streets of Rage 4 actually came out on the Switch and turned out pretty good!
The 1st rocket Knight adventures was amazing.
Can confirm.
By far the best of the series
What a great game and what a sad way to go. That last game was trash.
Yes it was and I played the hell out of it back in the day.
I know I'm late to this party but Sparkster for the Genesis is really good too.
“Have you ever tried platforming in a first person shooting game?”
Portal
Metroid prime
Doom
Exhumed/Powerslave
Its also bad in Portal

I think Streets of Rage 4 looks promising. One good thing is that it's not polygonal made.

There's another reason the Alex Kidd franchise died off: people took one look at Super Mario World and saw how awfully dated Alex Kidd was.
Maybe they would have if SMW came out a year or so earlier.

didn't know that a ps3 rocket knight game even existed... konami should have honestly advertised more in my opinion.
You still can't comprehend the genius that is SoR 3's soundtrack? I'm sorry to hear that

The Sleep killers - Game Sack Edition
I find it to be the opposite since their voices lull Me to sleep.
I'm hyped for Streets Of Rage 4. The people behind it also made a remastered version of Wonderboy 3: The Dragon's Trap. That game both looks and sounds beautiful.
Game Theory: BC Racers *is* a franchise and the next installment was Wipeout
Whatever happened to Chuck Rock anyway? Was BC Racers a franchise killer?
Have you always written such hilarious closed captions? I’ve never seen them before today.
I’ll have them on for future videos for sure!
Gamesack are influencers. Even before episode being published companies knew about it and tried to compensate. If this is how it works do episode about Suikoden and Grandia series. Maybe those will be back to? Great video as always
Venra wild arms :)
One of the 2 creators of Grandia is dead some time ago. Between that and the fact Game Arts seems to be pretty much dead...
Sad to hear. But still "Grandia" is now property of Square Enix? It still could be made
26:29 KITTY!
Dammit, why couldnt you Talk about Fzero? Then we maybe could've Had a new Game announced by now.
Did... F-Zero GX or Climax kill the series? I feel like it's similar to how Metroid got dormant for a while before coming back...
@MrJechgo
F-ZERO GX actually got very high review scores.
F-Zero GX for the GameCube was awesome. Never played the later handheld titles though, from what I've heard they seem pretty lackluster.
They covered it in the first Franchise Killers video. GP Legend was the stinker, if you're curious.
0:14 That's the opening theme to Senran Kagura: Estivals verses, meaning Joe and Dave has either played it or is aware of the game on some level.
i don't get it. For me Streets of Rage 3 is the best game in series, followed by SoR 2 and then SoR 1. The music is really unique and cutting-edge hardware wise, i like it a lot.
same here. In that exact order haha.
No Dave, this is a sequel to the _actual_ war.
😂😂😂
Still waiting for you to discuss Mass Effect in full detail. Make it happen #Andromeda
It’s funny how many of these franchises came back
Franchise killers? What about Green Dawg?
That wasn't a franchise.
AD Racers Hahahaha xD Awesome Dave!
