- The Red House stars Edward G. Robinson as Pete Morgan who, with his spinster sister Ellen (Judith Anderson) has raised Meg (Allene Roberts) as their own on a secluded farm. Now a teen, Meg convinces her friend Nath (Lon McCallister) to come help with chores on the farm. Despite Pete's warning of terrors within an abandoned red house in the woods, Meg and Nath explore deep into the forest and discover troubling secrets. The gorgeous music score is by Oscar winner Miklós Rózsa who also composed for Double Indemnity and Spellbound. The Red House is a moody, atmospheric noir drama at its best!
Director: Delmer Daves
Writers: George Agnew Chamberlain, Delmer Daves
Starring: Edward G. Robinson, Lon McCallister, Judith Anderson, Rory Calhoun, Julie London, Allene Roberts, Julie London
Wonderful 👏 I felt like I'd gone back in time. A quiet Sunday watching a brilliant old film. Only things missing is my youth and family, open fireplace with logs crackling.
Thank you for my reminiscent Sunday afternoon 🥰
If we had our youth we may not have been able to appriciate this movie! I'm 69!!!!
What a sweet, sentimental memory, lovely💕
Am I the only one addicted to these Black and white 🎬 🤔 thanks for them because my summer would have been boring and empty 😴
Love these old movies especially in the time were living in. It's a great escape from stressful stuff..
No, I am getting an addiction too...
I love old movies:
Morning dishwashing would be unbearable.
They are my favorite. When times were tough. But simple. I wish this country was like it was back then ❤
Love these classic old films. The great Edward G. Robinson and all these great actors in real stories with real plots and wonderful nuance and filmmaking. No sex and violence over the top. Great stuff and thank you.
Yes Cheyenne your right and your also a fox
No violence? Did we watch the same film?

Mr. Edward G. Robinson was the actor of all actors. Just putting some RESPECT on his name.
RIP.
Saw this one years ago and it has stayed in my mind like a vivid dream. Edward G Robinson was always brilliant, whatever the role.
Watching for the second time, once I saw the name E. G. Robinson I was all in!!!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this Excellent Old Black & White Horror Movie. E G Robinson was Brilliant and so was his Sister, Ellen. It even had Young Julie London, and Rory Calhoun. I couldn’t take my eyes off this movie. It was that good. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
There's something about this movie that just has it all. Captures that post war Americana just perfectly. The soundtrack, the shot setup, the actors - I just love this whole movie.
Even the watch said made in the USA
I think that there is a newer version of the red house. It's a horror film.
i truly LOVE this film. i WISH it were better known to old movie fans. to me it is one of the most freudian films EVER! in danny peary's review of king kong his theory is that skull island represents the subconscious mind of carl denham. this theory can easily be applied to the ox head woods and edward g. robinson's character in the red house 1947. just as the dark memories of the past are repressed (or least he attempts to repress them) in the back of his mind, the red house is buried deep within the ox head woods. EGR can not guard the ox head woods. he has a bad leg. often in cinema freudian terms a lame leg = impotence. he hires a much younger, much more virile man for the job (rory calhoun) who is always popping off his rifle (a phallic symbol). when the teens go searching for the red house their quest is in vain as one 'non-believer' is present and distractions are a plenty. yet when the young girl goes to sleep her subconscious mind unlocks the deep buried memory of the secret location of the red house. she awakens and goes straight to the red house.
Edward was an incredible character actor, great old movie. Cheers Rosemary Perth Western Australia (71 yrs)
everyone was good.. especially Tibby..even though she was trouble. Good actress!
Another Aussie here, aren’t we lucky to have these great movies ? I’ve seen this one twice, and enjoyed it just as much.
Mr. Edward G. Robinson! Another piece of work of a genius. Splendid acting.
I read before acting, he had dreams of being a lawyer. He also spoke a few languages.
He would have Rocked his closing arguments in a courtroom. HOW was Eddie G. NEVER EVEN Nominated for an Oscar?! Not Even for his role as The Man in The Cincinnati Kid, his last staring role, his last great featured performance! 😢
Edward G. Robinson is one of my favorite actors, he has a naturalism that is just brilliant. Love this film.
We must thank UA-cam management for uploading excellent and great old time Hollywood movies known for best acting talent of erstwhile actors. New generations can see and enjoy them
My mom turned me on to this movie when I was 13 or 14 years old. Love it, great movie, one of my favorites. Blew me away at the end was not expecting that!
I love old movies and have been watching dozens of them on UA-cam lately. I tried to watch The Red House several months ago, because I've always loved Edward G. Robinson; but for whatever reason, just couldn't get interested. I'm glad I tried again tonight because it's a really great movie. Judith Anderson was wonderful in the role of Ellen. All of the actors were top-notch. Thanks for uploading this great film.
My mother named me after J. Anderson. , but changed to just Judy. So when I found this movie here a while back, I pictured my mother pregnant with me watching and while waiting for my National Guard father who was stationed elsewhere away from us to see this picture and saying thats my daughter's name. True? , I don't really know but love the movie and the thoughts of past dreams of family futures.
I had to make sure it was Judith Anderson, lol. Because as a little girl watching Rebecca with her as Mrs. Danvers she scared me to death, lol.
Saw this at my aunt's as a child and that car, sinking, never could forget it. Great performance my Edward G. And all.
I like these old films seeing the actors then and now
Love TMC for the old movies like this. When stars could act
I was thinking the same thing. I don't watch T.V because the acting is terrible these days, love these old movies.
I don’t watch TV either, why would you with great classics like this.
Oh I love it the drama the whole thing, great flick keeps you watching. I like it very much. The eyes tell all.
Edward G Robinson another Excellent actor, who knew his craft, and the other cast members, Thank you for this film
What Hollywood produced was worth watching
Edward G. Robinson going mad in this is almost his going mad as "the Sea Wolf" by Jack London! God he was the best! Wow! And Judith Anderson and Allene Roberts what truly great classically trained actresses. Luv this film!
Oh, I so much enjoyed this movie ... "The Red House!"
Loved it.
This is not a film: it is a complete cinema class. Wow!
Delmer Daves was a major writer/ director who deserves a major re-appraisal for a number of classic films often featuring first-call acting talents.
What a fantastic movie and great acting/ directing and the music is excellent.
I am so happy they stayed together😃.
What a wonderful movie! From start to finish the characters, setting and music are just beautiful. Thank you for sharing. It helps me through the hard times.
Wonderful, gloomy and hauntingly beautiful story!
Another very good drama with stellar cast.
Thanks.
I just finished watching 3 movies with Edward G. where he was the good guy, so this was a change. I liked his line in this one, "Even the lowest creature has more courage than any human"
What a great movie!! I enjoyed it throughly!! They don’t make them like this anymore!! 🍁🌻🍁
Eddie G. He did it all!
Thanks for posting. What a blast!
Brilliant film and wonderful cast. Thanks for posting.
Wow, great movie, kept me in rapt attention! Edward G Robinson, an amazing actor. The whole cast was excellent, thank you!
OMGEEE!!!
THANK YOU
BLESSINGS!!😍
Fantastic movie thanx for the upload!
So cool you knew about Memnet. Dame Judith Anderson also played Laura's aunt in "Laura," the housekeeper in "Rebecca," and Big Mama in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." She is wonderful.
What a good little movie. Nice.
They sure don't make good movies like these anymore.
I'm 29 years old lol 🤣. I think I'm getting old
40:00 -- It was impossible for me not to think of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big, Bad Wolf. The way he's leaning with feigned casualness against the tree, his thumbs hooked in his pant tops ...
Without spoiling anything,
the ending reminded me of Scorsese's Cape fear
and also the mystery of the woods
reminded me of David Lynch.
I think this film even influenced The Night of the Hunter.
Anyway that's my take on a first-time watch.
Lots of nice cinematic moments with no dialogue.
The music building during scenes in the woods.
Great cast too.
Including Aussie Judith Anderson.
i fell in love with this movie from the first time i saw it wonderful movie thanks for the posting🙂😍
How did I miss this movie? It was a great movie!! 👍
New sub. Thank you for this wonderful classic💕
I miss the way we used to dress. So much more modesty and self respect back in those days. Now it’s all tats, fat, exposed skin and unicorn colored hair and makeup. I take it modern day feminism and father absence in the home brought us here.
meg had a ton of eye make up on. Give me a break with your keep the women suppressed crap. resist change & be miserable wishing for the past when men kept women down & had all the freedom Foff plus there were plenty of absent dads back then... war, drunks, you name it. You're dreaming of a time that didn't exist.
This movie reminds me of The Unseen with Barbara Bach. The film's content and the how Edward G. Robertson sickness almost destroys his "niece/daughter" is just sleazy and horrifying. I would call this a horror movie, because the last 25 minutes switches into a Fatal Attraction obsession. The real hero is Judith Anderson, how she sacrifices herself to save the girl.
This was such a good movie
Eddie Robinson is one of the great ones! I don't know why that cute girl wasn't a bigger star.
Wow, great print! Well done.
Miss Ellen is the lady that plays Memnet, in the 10 commandments with Charlton Heston. She plays the temple Maid of neffrettetti, the daughter of ramesis, that fell in love with Moses, and she ends up pushing her from the balcony, because she knew Moses was the son of a Hebrew slave and was scared she might reveal Moses real birth right
That’s her alright! She also was the evil Mrs. Danvers in Rebecca. Good actress!✌️
Check on the two roles you mentioned, also played by Judith Anderson! My favorite role, though, that she played was that of the deceased “Rebecca’s” maid, in the great movie by the same name, directed brilliantly by Hitchcock
Nefretiri
I thought that was her. I didn't recognize her face, but her voice I definitely remember.
Great, Memory👍
Julie London, my first time seeing her in a movie besides Emergency 51
Film Noir was so great!
It was a beautiful compelling film... maybe retitled the Drowning Man.
You know the man who cannot face up to what he's done and takes down everyone around him.
It is unfortunately, a fairly common story.
Is his sister helping him or enabling him? (rhetorical)
This movie was wild. 😆🥺
Misplaced love - the story of humanity.
just the music is scaring the pooh out of me .
Great film! ♥️
This was a really good flick!
SPOILER:
I really thought the movie would somehow end with the red house burning up with him in it.
women and men were dress so kind and beautiful. I wish the old day coming back. 2021 is hell on earth now. People donot want to cover clothes on them in public.
Excellent!
The film begins with the narrator saying that roads are beating back the unknown darkness of ancient forests. It was the attitude of the time, nature was seen as something that had to be fought and controlled by us humans, not something beautiful that we have to work with, not against. Hopefully our past disasters have changed our minds.
hogwash...past generations knew more and were closer to nature than anyone of us could ever dream of being
@@disf5178 Our ancestors had to survive as best they could and for most of our history they couldn’t just go to the shop when they needed food or other supplies, so they had to learn how to catch or find their food and avoid being killed by other creatures. I suppose that you can call that being close to nature, but our knowledge of the world and all the creatures in it, including ourselves, is now vastly greater than it ever was in the past. We have always changed the world around us to suit ourselves, driving many other species to extinction in the process, and we are still doing it. Nowadays we have the knowledge to do things differently and better if we choose to.
What disasters? Highways are needed to get to nature.
@@lookbovine You sound bovine too.
Great movie 🍿
Beautiful movie!
Julie London must be really good in this movie. I see her name twice....LOL
Huh? Where?
All I see is once at the beginning and once at the end--like all the other actors in the movie.
In this movie, couldn't understand why they don't call the police.
Strange how one person can poison so many close by and how everyone had to fight for their own life.
I wonder if there was a book with this story. I somehow seem to think that I may have read a very similar story. Good film noir anyway.
Yes, this is based on a 1945 novel of the same name, by George Agnew Chamberlain.

Wait a minute, girls were not allowed to wear pants in school back then, I noticed a few had jeans on.
Rory Calhoun! 💞
On these old movies, the girl’s room is always so pretty with a window overlooking a lake. And her guardians love her so much. Kind of a twist I wasn’t expecting. You have a young senior in high school, adopted being raised in a loving home. There is town gossip but nothing about the couple who disappeared or how the brother and sister gained a child. The girl wants to get farm help for her father figure but picks a boy she has a crush on and is dating someone else. They never explained how Teller got $750 which was a lot back then for living in the woods and whether he lived in the red cabin. The sister knew what the brother had done and kept his secret for 16 years, giving up the one chance she had for love, marriage and children. Although she got to help raise Meg. The doctor must have asked where the child came from. Maybe he even delivered Meg. I kind of don’t know why they still couldn’t get married, live on the farm and keep her brother and Meg under their roof. But the sister never turned her brother in, only loved and forgave him. He killed out of jealous rage even though Jeanie was married to someone else. But after his jealous rage, he turned into a loving father figure for 16 years until a guy came into Meg’s life simultaneously while Nate was curious and disobeyed orders to stay out of the woods. That appeared to have opened up skeletons in the closet for the loving father figure to the point he went off the deep end. Why the sister didn’t see it coming. Why they didn’t move away a long time ago or get him help. Even while dying, the sister told Meg to have pity and to love her father figure guardian and the first thing Meg does is go into the house and make him feel that she hates him and will be leaving. The sister is already dead, the family is falling apart, the brother is off the deep end and Nate again has to go into the woods causing all of them to go out after him. Meg begged Pete to go get Nate and it just made things worst until he almost killed Meg and then killed himself.
"The doctor must have asked where the child came from. Maybe he even delivered Meg."
I think everyone knew who Meg/the child was. When her parents died, it was probably deemed an accident. Only Pete Morgan and his sister Ellen know the truth. And they legally adopted Meg.
the story was they went off on a trip and died/never came back..
I thought Pete paid Teller the $750 to watch the woods.
SPOILER... WHY are you telling the whole story? What is wrong with you?
@@gingiehughes9575 why read the comments b4 you watch the movie?

this movie was just to scary for me although I love that Edgar G🤣😂
Edward G Robinson has this way of just going blank in front of the camera like he's having a brain fart.

51:18 -- I assume this is the titular red house.
I'll bet they thought hard and long about the wisdom of turning the book into a black and white movie.
When I watch these old films , even those made pre 2000 , my first observation is women without body graffiti.
Sad how women of all ages today , think 'ink shaped' spiders , crabs and snakes somehow enhances their looks or makes them more appealing. Ofcourse, I forgot to mention the personal body statements they claim to make as to why they have them .
I cannot imagine the old Hollywood greats like Jane Russel , Judy Garland , Ginger Rogers , Marilyn Monroe 'sporting' such eyesores . 🤔🆓✝️🇬🇧
It’s not for me but I say to each her/his own.
What IS their fascination with his forbidden forest of mystery??
The way Nate kissed his mother goodbye 🥴.
Ya. Wow.
Right? He kisses Meg on the cheek, but his mom on the lips
I too thought it was over the top
I felt like I should look away 👀
Seems that Petey Boy had a few problems and just kept repeating that he had complete immunity.😅

It's as silly as "The Stranger" but still satisfying
Mrs Danvers loved to play with fire.
Wow 35 cent per hour then since the young man had to walk they agree to 50 cent a hour. I wonder I could buy for 35 to 50 cent in 2021
In England in 47 my dad was paid £2 week that was equal to $10 then
U could buy one gob stopper
back in the 40s it was a nickle for a movie and 15cents for a steak dinner
50 cents will buy a big pocket of nothing now.
Poor Jeannie, to lose her birth and adoptive parents in such violent ways.
Poor editing of background music and it doesn't even match with scene plus it's too loud and annoying.
Great, but dark movie!
This is pretty good, even the stereotypical characters have some originality. There is the overbearing father who thinks he can give orders to a 17 year old, the hot-headed high school boy who is worried about being thought yellow--whatever that means--and who does not realize that not doing foolish things is the courageous thing. Then there is the gun-happy hunter man dumber than the animals he is supposed to shoot. There are a couple of stretches in the plot, like the question of money.
Plot full of holes but overall it's enjoyable.
Attractive women, crazy guy, athletic young guys. Small town America. 👍
Creepy AF.
Muggsy did a great job… Edward G Robinson, I bet you didn’t know he was a communist, he almost got black listed back during the 40& 50s about communism in the movie industry, he still a great actor
Sorry, I just gotta say, I would have had my knife out. Just saying!
I know what miss Elen Morgan is thinking: '' Rebecca was a better farmer '' - she even wants to burn down Manderley.., i mean.. the red house
These are creepy people doing creepy things. Watch out.

Thirty minutes in. Somehow the actor who played Nath, Lon McCallister, is playing a character that is stupid, rude and obnoxious to all the people he encounters. Not to mention he is a lousy actor. But he also strikes me as someone in real life acts the same way. Hard to watch, when everyone else performs admirably.
What an ill-informed comment. Lon McCallister was a charming, underrated actor, and briefly one of the most popular in the mid-40s. He excelled in bucolics such as Home in Indiana. He realised his boyishness and short stature would limit his career, and he vowed to leave films by the age of 30. This he did, turning successfully to real estate. In one of his later interviews, he said he had no regrets, ‘preferring the anonymity of a has-been.’ Despite your rude assertion that Lon was ‘obnoxious’ in real life, he was in fact a lovely, sensitive man, loyal and kind, attested to by many of his co-stars ( including Allene Roberts), with whom he forged lifelong friendships.
@@melodramaboy I agree! I read that about him too, he was very well liked and respected in the industry and a very kind person. He played all of his parts quite well. I thought he was just adorable! RIP Bud .
