Pump Water from a Lake to a Cabin or Cottage (mobile friendly)

  • A quick video demonstrating how we occasionally pump water from a freshwater lake to an off-grid dwelling. The cabin/cottage is located on a remote mountain lake and doesn't have access to grid electricity.
The biggest obstacle was pumping the lake water up a 80 foot (24 meter) hill and into 110 gallon (250 litre) water barrel on the roof. The water then travels by gravity feed down through 1/2" PEX pipe and to the kitchen tap.
This is the 2nd gas pump. The first one, a 3.5 HP model had problems priming and pumping the water up the hill.
Would prefer to go with an electric pump, but it was difficult to find a pump that could pump at least 80 feet vertically, run off DC and is affordable.
The pump is pretty good on petrol. Only needs to be refuelled once a season (May - Nov). At 3/4 throttle, it will fill the water barrels in 4 minutes.
Went with a 1.5" PVC pipe. The overall cost ($293.00) was reasonable for the pipe, fittings and the could be picked up from an irrigation or hardware dealer.
Personally, I would prefer a quieter system, but, for the last 3 years it has been working fine.
Feel free to make suggestions for improvements!

All we used was a pump, a tree and a tank. Along with piping and a few macro filters for gunk. The shower has a fine gravel and charcoal filter, and for drinking we have a gravel/charcoal that's put through a fridge filter using aquarium tubing into a small tank with a battery powered uv sterilizer. That setup is for emergencies only and doesn't give you any more than enough to keep you from dying from dehydration if you run out of water. We filter it alot since we've had not so great experiences with that lake water.

The cabin isn't one of those fancy ones and it's too isolated to bring any real equipment into. We used a horse to lug in the two generators and and everyone who uses it has to pitch in gas for them

Sounds like a good, simple, dependable system. Gravel/charcoal is a good idea. We bring up our drinking water. Some people swear by the water, but I've seen a few beavers swimming in the lake.

That is a serious off-grid cabin!

Once a season (May - Nov). At 3/4 throttle, it only runs for 4 minutes to fill the two tanks.

Wow, that's a boat load of weight on top of that cabin roof !

How do you keep the engine from overheating in that box?

I leave the top off when running and cut a hole for exhaust. The pump only needs to run for 5 - 7 minutes before the barrels are full.

Looks like you installed a cabin to your water system lol.

how offend do you have to fill it with gas?

have you considered a ram pump? It would fill your tanks for free, and relatively easy to build

I didn't. Not until I saw it on Wranglestar channel, Can it pump up a 40' hill?

7 foot of lift to your output for every one foot of drop from your source to your pump input

Hmm, sounds like it would work. Thanks for the idea!

Maybe I'm a little late to this, but can this method be applied to salt water lakes/ponds as well? Trying to figure this out before we start. Want to do it from scratch like you guys, thanks in advance for any reply.

+Vacations in Virginia Hi, I'm sure the concept could work for salt water, but for longevity, better equipment would be required. I use a galvanized check valve, but you should look for stainless steel. My gas water pump was made offshore, so the impeller blades are made from cast iron. They would rust easily if submerged in salt water. It would work, but I would drain the pump each time. Then you would have to prime the pump each time. Not the end of the world, just a pain. Maybe talk to a place that sells water pumps and see what they recommend for salt water. Great question!

I've seen a northern tool model, used as a bilge for a rusty old barge, pump almost nonstop for yrs...but running 24/7 was the reason for that. The back pressure caused by infinitesimally small micron filters during reverse osmosis desalination would require a more sophisticated setup for longevity

I know this comment is old but desalination is a very difficult and energy intensive process if you plan to use it for drinking, otherwise salt water can only be used for cleaning & showering.

Nice music at least Did not learn anything from this video. Pumping water is easy Processing it into Drinking Water..is Another Story..nothing learned no explanation...left me in the Dark from the very beginning......

Too bad you didn't learn anything. Pumping water is difficult, especially if you don't have the right pump for the application. I have all the equipment for filtration, just have to get it working.
