I wasn't into Steely Dan when they first came out. Was into Foreigner, Boston, Van Halen, ELO etc. Then in the year of 2000 I finally started listening and was like, "What the hell was wrong with me. I missed decades of some of the greatest music ever created. Can't get that back, but I dang try to.
That's the great thing about music, you can discover it anytime even decades later and never feel like you missed out. I WISH I could "rediscover" so much music, I envy those who hear great music like this for the very first time.
Me too! They are extraordinary one of the best 70s bands by a long way. Royal Scam may be my favourite album by them
Jazz and funk definitely are two of the genres that Steely Dan draws upon. Also rock, blues and R&B.
The rhythm section on this tune (along with most others on this album) are two of the all-time greats: Chuck Rainey on Bass and Bernard Purdie on drums. Those two lay down a groove as tasty and smooth as maple syrup.
Just posted same...
Man, that roundhouse fill at 1:30 - it's honestly the simplest thing that could go there, but in the hands of a master like Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, it slaps *so hard*. And then at 2:26 - man, it does not get any better. Purdie is just funky perfection on this tune.
@@joeday4293 The three hits on the hat...oooh.
Steely Dan is mind blowing
It's my favorite SD song. Def their most funky. Night by Night is another funky SD song. It's ALL good.
Asia & BJ, you'll love their "Deacon Blues", "Josie", “Bodhisattva” and more!!!!
Bodhisattva is my favorite!
Im 64 and I remember when this album came out and Steely Dans one of my favs
I always felt that Steely Dan has been showing us all what music CAN be.
Yes, the Dan are in their own category. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker always brought some very talented players to the session creating a unique sound and groove. Always great lyrics usually with a touch of humor. I'm a Big Dan Fan so hope you delve deep into their wealth of wonderful music. Like a fine wine, it only gets better with age. RIP MR. BECKER.
Give it a few decades. Funk, jazz, more. Been a fan since the 70's.
Steely Dan is its own genre.
The thing to know about Steely Dan is that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker put together a kick-ass rock band, then quit touring and concentrated on perfecting their music in the studio. Then they started using a wide variety of the best jazz session musicians to play jazz-infused rock. It was a gradual progression from rock through r&b and into more of a jazz influence.
With The Dan.... you get it all and then some. Jazz, Funk, R&B and Rock.... In retrospect I consider them as progressive or fusion. They fused many genre's in almost every song. Their lyrics can be cryptic at times but that' all part of who they are. Great reaction. Take care as always.
This reminds me of my college days. The university had a jazz station and jazz fusion was real big. I thank my late brother for introducing me to Steely Dan. RIP Brother! ❤
Asia listens and BJ feels.
OMG so so so much amazing Steely Dan! The production, phrasing, instrumentation, vocal arrangements, soloists, grooves, and themes. Dig IN to the Dan!
Haha… Couldn’t have said it better! ♥️
wow.. that bass and drums might be the funkiest thing I have heard !
Yes! Thank you! I used to listen to Steely Dan all day long! Album after album… Two creative genius knuckleheads making music magic. Best anytime music!
Asia, I think I understand how you were trying to describe the sound and I can tell you that is how much of Steely Dan’s music is. So often at parties back in the day their LPs would be played and it set such a groove or feeling amongst us. Along that same line their Aja LP was played at so many concerts I attended as the pre-concert or intermission music and again it just seemed to have an effect setting a mood in the audience.
Check the lyrics. It's about a thief who can't help himself but to steal. "Sorry, angel. I must take what I see".
Think that’s a metaphor
Brilliance on display .
Never gets old .
It gives me so much joy to find people who get Steely Dan. LOVED both your reactions. Asia's face was beaming!
This can be called Funk, R & B or Jazz fusion - or moreso, a mixture of all of the aforementioned !
The song you were referring to is probably "Deacon blues", by Steely Dan, and it's one of my favorite of theirs!
And....this is a deep cut. Par for the course with Steely Dan. Check out King of the World, Night by Night, Your Gold Teeth I and II for starters.
Love me some of The Dan.
Brilliant songwriting from day one
And they always had the best musicians working with them
This on the Royal Scam album it is my go to Steely Dan album
Love me some steely Dan
A song about a jewelry thief that makes it sound cool and intriguing?! Only Steely Dan....
RIP Walter Becker
There is a piece from "It Takes A Thief"!!! A t.v. show that ran from 1968-1971.. I used to watch all the reruns and the theme song to it is dope! It's definitely a homage to that show..
You guys got your reaction absolutely spot on, especially Asia. You have got to like MUSIC. Listen to any one of their first five albums 3 times and i guarantee you will be hooked. Great vid guys. Cheers.
You two definitely have great taste in music and are so entertaining explaining what you hear. Love you both 🩷💙
Steely Dan is amazing. Can't go wrong with them. I wanted to tell you that I love your channel and your reaction videos. BJ is supercool and laid back. Asia has one of the prettiest smiles that I have seen in a long time. You both are delightful to watch. I love that you want to hear and react to music from different eras and seem to enjoy the journey. I'm older and remember much of these when they were new. If you want some recommendations from specific artists then I may be able to help with some of them. Cheers! Be well.
Happy Thanksgiving to my fav kids!!
I was going to give you a list of songs to react to next, but pretty much anything off of the "Katy Lied" album will do lmao
Wore this album and a bong out in (1976)
Steely Dan transcends all genres. If you can't get into them that's on you! Good reaction you two
It sounds like your friend may have been singing Deacon Blues from the AJA album. Fantastic track. Great job with this reaction. Thanks
Oh, Blue Jean Blues is one of my favorite songs and I love the part where you can hear Billy slide his fingers down the neck of the guitar. Saw ZZ Top practicing on the outskirts of Dallas in a storage facility way back when I just became a teen. I and my day were the only ones there and it was awesome.
Groov'n like only Steely Dan can. Compositions are unmatched in melody, musicianship and lyricism. The Royal Scam is one musical adventure after another. K. Charlemagne, Don't Take Me Alive, The Fez, and The Royal Scam are my favs.(Besides G.E) Love it when Asia gets the guitar work...The list of musicians playing on SD albums are a who's who of greats
Good band and song. So many classics, you can relax to some of them.
It doesn't get much better than the Dan, Would love to see your reaction to Tom Watts ,try " . The piano has been drinking "
Maybe even a little Eggs an Sausage, Blue Valentine, or Romeo is Bleeding😁
And the carpet needs a haircut...
If you dive deep, you'll understand just how good Steely Dan is.....sample the Aja and Royal Scam LPs
I grew up with their music, so listening to every track on every album was a new adventure. Yeah, they were funky, eclectic, eccentric, and weird... that's what I loved about them! I got to see them live at the end of their run and they were amazing! Asia is correct, they're an acquired taste. Not everyone likes them. I think BJ is thinking of Deacon Blues which was a huge popular hit.
Deacon Blues immediately.
The first harmonic note on that lead solo sounds like bells under that sizzling high-hat..
Love this one...❤
Jazz funk to drink whiskey and have a cigar too. Steely dan is the shit
Boy, it's been a minute since I heard this. Great song.
Been a fan of SD since 1973. Not a bad song on any of their albums. This album Royal Scam is by far my favorite.
What a groove. A mofo for sure. This is my go to SD album. Sooo good.
great song from the Royal Scam- cannot go wrong with the Dan
Making that Guitar Talk to the Drums and Bass
You'll love Black Cow and the moment you here the first 2 seconds of it you'll know who sampled it 😎.Even though I'm in my 40's, I always been a SD fan. There are some songs off their albums that normally wouldn't be played today unless it's Deep Tracks on SiriusXM and this being one those songs. I'm glad I had the chance to see them perform here in Milwaukee in 2016 before Walter Becker one of the founding members sadly passed away the following year. There are some good cover bands out there too that put on good show like Deacon Blues.
Bernard Purdy on drums and Chuck Rainey on bass lay down a groove 2nd to none for over 50 years. They are on all Royal Scam cuts but Don't Take Me Alive which is Rick Marotta on drums. Google these dudes. Purdy alone has played on over 4,000 recordings.
lyrics are about junkie who steals from his girlfriend (green earrings, medallion) when he's craving (hungry like a child) and because of his addition brushes off her hurt (the look in your eyes...i don't mind)
Bernard Purdie on drums
Such a good hook!! It has to be if Ice Cube sampled it! 🔥🔥
Hi Asia and BJ. Love your channel and your reactions. Think you'll love the funky jazz sound of Tallulah by Jamiroquai. Funk band with many other hit songs.
That guitar is so jazzy
You're thinking of Deacon Blues.
You can almost "grab bag" Steely Dan. I mean you can reach blind into a stack of their albums (at least up to, and including their "Gaucho" album), point at the song list with your eyes closed, and you'll probably be hearing something you like.
Nice!!!
Asia I know how much u like Steve Perry u need to listen to Harmony off of Street Talk album!!!!
Jazz/funk/rock all the way! This song is sooo awesome!!! I've loved their style since the 70s. Thanks for the reaction! 🤙🎸🤖
Got the funk going on tonight
❤❤
Where have you two been? An i just missing you on utube? Please explain!!!
Deacon Blues
Prime SD and yet not a widely known song..
BJ was digging it way more than Asia..
I don’t mind
it is true that people who do not enjoy listening to music will never get steely dan or like it. i pity those kind of people frankly.
Have ever looked up what the definition of steely Dan is?
Deacon Blues?
Deacon Blue?
this song is about a jewel thief who targets rich women, sleeps with them, and then steals their all of their jewelry.
Wasted time and Energy and you know it.🤠
oddly. George Carlin dissed the Dan. Don't know why.
Are you thinking or deacon blues?
