  • Apologies for poor audio in the voice-over here and there.
    0:00 Background
    0:30 Bert's files

    3:06 Problem details
    4:30 The sounds, quantized
    5:06 Demo and lesson
    * NB: I forgot to mention that the 6-string separation in the original MIDI file (2:20) is not entirely accurate - some string sounds appear in the wrong channel here and there, Some 5th string notes appear on the 4th string channel, and some 4th string notes even appear on the 2nd string channel. No idea why that might be. The strings have all been accurately assigned in the sequence from 4:30.

Thanks for this, quite interesting to see, I didn't realize Bert got so high tech! The pitch wheel setting he's referring to indicates how far up or down in pitch the bent notes will bend. In this case a "full" bend should correspond to 4 semitones. If you change the pitch bend range setting to 4 in the software it might correct some of the off sounding notes in the raw file.
PS thanks for doing such a wonderful job with the Bert Jansch Songbook, it's been a treasured resource for me. :)

Thanks. I guessed it would be something like that. I might try that in my software, but my main interest (initially) was how the 6-track midi file clearly showed how he played it, in a way that is much harder to ascertain from the recording. The wobbles in the digital reproduction just worked as a sign that there were his typical rapid embellishments hidden there (and which can be heard in the recording).

Thanks! I had struggled with various tunings and didn't realise it was in standard tuning! Not too hard to play but it's goiing to be very difficult to play and sing at the same time.

Yes! I struggled enough playing the thing - made me realise how strong Bert's hands were! - but singing at the same time is a whole other level....

I just had a look at Pierre LaBras playing this and I think he tunes the bass string up to F. That makes some of the awkward fingering a whole lot easier and doesn't really cause any added problems. It may not be quite authentic but then not all of us have hands like Bert's!

Yes, Bert did sometimes make some odd choices. In this case, it's certainly tough to begin with - you need strong hands - and that way the flow breaks on the Bb won't be everyone's taste. But personally I like the effect when you get on top of his shapes. They have a special sound and feel. But I also like Pierre's inventive re-casting of some of the tunes. After all, when Bert covered other people's songs, he did them his way! (This one is very different from Cyril Tawney's original! Even from Davey Graham's version, which is kind of half-way to Bert's. I think Bert would be happy people are still playing his music, however they're doing it.
