I built one like that a couple years ago and it was really relaxing listening to the water. The birds wouldn't use it as a bird bath til the water got down to an inch or less. I've have since made one that uses a reservoir with a shallow tray on top to hold the water and the birds like it. There are videos on UA-cam showing how to make them- maybe I should make a video next time I make one. The bees don't mind the deep water, they just land on the rock and go up to the edge of the water and drink.

Solar fountain!?!?🤯🤯🤯🤯 that would work SO GREAT!!, in my area of Alberta we get 2156 hours of sun per year( average) in summer we have days as long as 16 hrs of sun up. I’ve wanted a fountain in my garden ever since I’ve HAD a garden! Just the other day I said to my wife I think the bees are looking for water so I flipped over a plastic tote lid and put some water in it. The next day I had birds as well as bees hanging around the tote lid. Thanks for this one mr Scott!! I can’t wait to try this

I love it when my neighbor turns on his fountain at night,
it puts me right to sleep.
I want one of my own but they seem SO complex to install.
But two simple piece? I'm game!
I got so many birds in my garden this year that I really want to provide them some local water source.
It gets so hot that I have to go inside every 20-30 minutes for a bit and drink loads of water to stay regular.
I can't imagine the stress on my local wildlife.
3:30 Excellent tip to remember to bury it slightly raised accounting for soil build-up and mulch!
6:30 Good looking out for those smaller critters who still need to top off
I'm actually super excited for this project for next week!
I wanna build like 4 of these now though haha!

i built a small pond but found that algae growth was too much so i went back to decorative antique wash basins as my ponds - these i can dump the water and refill them daily for fresh water and also for cleaning (the bowls of water have to deal with bird pooh and racoons washing their dirty paws, etc.)

I built something not exactly like that but very similar, and in that same sort of tub some years back. I've had some trouble keeping up with maintenance. It's not difficult to install, I found, but those simple solar fountains get clogged easily. I'm on my third one now, as they just wear out. I also am in an area with more mature trees and I find there's an issue with leaves and tree seeds blowing into the water and making it mucky. I use an old strainer to try to clean out the pond, but it is work. On the other hand, I have seen birds and frogs at the fountain at various times, so it does have wildlife value.

Thanks Scott for your service to your country & thank you for dedicating your life to teaching others the joys of gardening. I live in Australia as I've mentioned before 🦘🦘🦘. I didn't know these solar fountains existed. I will have to see where I can get one. You make it look so easy. I used to have several small trees around my garden, but they were cut down (not by me), where the small birds could fly from one to the other on their way to be hand-fed by me & when I had my set sprays going it would give them cover. Big THUMBS UP.

Scott, this is something I’ve been planning in my head for months. Until then, for fun, just been using a large plastic planter tray. It gets filthy with bird poop almost daily. I have to tip it over and hose it out a lot, which is fine. I don’t see how you will easily clean this. What do you anticipate doing? Thanks

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 роки тому

It's deep enough that I anticipate most of the debris sinking. The fountain will help aerate the water to keep it cleaner. I'm anticipating a good cleaning every few months.

    • @GardenerScott

Most of the dirt falls to the bottom. The fountain spray and shade from the rocks and branches keep algae to a minimum; an occasional treatment with bleach kills any that grows. At the end of the season I empty it and wipe out debris. It actually stays pretty clean.
