Much appreciated mate 👍..Yes its been going great the plants are finally starting to grow well, we had some late frost here in UK which set them back a bit, but now its taking shape.I can't believe how much bird life a small pond can draw into your garden, iv always had a drinking table for them here but a pond just acts like a magnet, iv had a few migratory birds pop down to bath and drink that I've never seen in my garden before so happy days ..The insect life is going well in the pond so hopefully more to happen as we get into summer...Cheers 👍
Your natural pond is really beautiful. I was wondering how your plants are doing keeping the pond clean. I am thinking about doing a natural one myself. Your dog was a cute assistant.
Thank you..The plants are doing a great job at keeping it clean its remained clear once everything settled down. I get some blanket weed algae especially in shallow parts but it's easy just to pull that out every now and again, so yes I'm pleased how it's gone and plenty of wildlife going on...👍
I started a pond today on my allotment by digging the basic shape 60cm deep....a lot easier than I thought it would be. That was plan A, justcwatched your video and there is a plan B now. You have inspired me to make the pond and surrounding area larger. Some great ideas for encourahing wildlife. What size was your black pond liner and was the one on the top for cosmetic reasons? I am UK based so any recommendations for the liners would be appreciated. Job well done
Hi Julie. The pond liner I used was from a company called oase, I was lucky and got one that was half price and it was far to big for the small pond I built so I had plenty left over..The top liner (fleece) was used to protect the main liner from the stones and rocks and cosmetic also. The top liner isn't totally necessary you could use off cuts from the main liner for added protection..Good luck with the project and I'm glad my video helped you out with you're plans. 👍
It's me again. Lined the pond at the weekend and looking at the edging now. My question is how did you incorporate the plants surrounding the pond? Did you place them just outside the liner or sort of made a U shaped dwelling within the liner for them? I haven't cut the liner yet. Will send you a picture when complete. Many thanks once again.
Hi Julie. Good to hear you started the pond .. I only made a few dwellings incorporated with the main liner , the other plants I dug near the liner edge and placed some off cuts of liner to create a bowl near their roots to make sure they don't dry out.. Hope that helps 👍
Hi Randall, thank you so much for this video. Your pond looks wonderful and you have inspired this 75 yr old grandma to try and make one in my little backyard. May I ask what was it you added over the soil? Some type of sand? Also is it necessary to use 3 layers of lining? Thanks heaps. Janice in Qld downunder
Good day Janice..Yes its just normal building sand,it's at a depth of 6cm , its used so the liner is sitting on a soft substrate. It's not necessary to use under lay you could just put the pond liner direct over the sand (many do) but it's well worth the added protection of underlay...I added underlay over the main pond liner to because I was adding rocks to the pond just to protect it more you could just add small bits of off cut liner under each rock if you wanted to keep cost down and if you use smooth pebbles like I did they could just go straight on the main liner...Good luck if you make one .
