    I like the way you built from the bottom up and used water and rocks to weight and partially shape the liner as the pond got shallower. The final result looks very natural and should attract a variety of wild critters.

      Much appreciated mate 👍..Yes its been going great the plants are finally starting to grow well, we had some late frost here in UK which set them back a bit, but now its taking shape.I can't believe how much bird life a small pond can draw into your garden, iv always had a drinking table for them here but a pond just acts like a magnet, iv had a few migratory birds pop down to bath and drink that I've never seen in my garden before so happy days ..The insect life is going well in the pond so hopefully more to happen as we get into summer...Cheers 👍

    I started a pond today on my allotment by digging the basic shape 60cm deep....a lot easier than I thought it would be. That was plan A, justcwatched your video and there is a plan B now. You have inspired me to make the pond and surrounding area larger. Some great ideas for encourahing wildlife. What size was your black pond liner and was the one on the top for cosmetic reasons?
    I am UK based so any recommendations for the liners would be appreciated.
    Job well done

    • @randall6002
      @randall6002  Рік тому

      Hi Julie. The pond liner I used was from a company called oase, I was lucky and got one that was half price and it was far to big for the small pond I built so I had plenty left over..The top liner (fleece) was used to protect the main liner from the stones and rocks and cosmetic also. The top liner isn't totally necessary you could use off cuts from the main liner for added protection..Good luck with the project and I'm glad my video helped you out with you're plans. 👍

      It's me again. Lined the pond at the weekend and looking at the edging now. My question is how did you incorporate the plants surrounding the pond? Did you place them just outside the liner or sort of made a U shaped dwelling within the liner for them? I haven't cut the liner yet.
      Will send you a picture when complete.
      Many thanks once again.

    • @randall6002
      @randall6002  11 місяців тому

      Hi Julie. Good to hear you started the pond ..
      I only made a few dwellings incorporated with the main liner , the other plants I dug near the liner edge and placed some off cuts of liner to create a bowl near their roots to make sure they don't dry out..
      Hope that helps 👍

    Hi Randall, thank you so much for this video. Your pond looks wonderful and you have inspired this 75 yr old grandma to try and make one in my little backyard. May I ask what was it you added over the soil? Some type of sand? Also is it necessary to use 3 layers of lining? Thanks heaps. Janice in Qld downunder

    • @randall6002
      @randall6002  3 роки тому +3

      Good day Janice..Yes its just normal building sand,it's at a depth of 6cm , its used so the liner is sitting on a soft substrate. It's not necessary to use under lay you could just put the pond liner direct over the sand (many do) but it's well worth the added protection of underlay...I added underlay over the main pond liner to because I was adding rocks to the pond just to protect it more you could just add small bits of off cut liner under each rock if you wanted to keep cost down and if you use smooth pebbles like I did they could just go straight on the main liner...Good luck if you make one .

    Wonderful video! Thank you. I have questions as I am just starting the process. Except I am making a pond on our land, for deer to drink from. It might be 4 ft deep in the center, we are clearing trees so it should be mostly sunny all day, (for now anyways) I got a liner, the soil there seems to only want to grow Buckthorn so I don't know if it would hold water or not. There is really NOT that many videos out there to show a pond with no power to filter the water. Will the plants you added keep the water from getting nasty and basically a mosquito breeding nightmare??? Any help would be amazing. I am in the US btw.

    • @randall6002
      @randall6002  3 роки тому +7

      Thank you..Yes the plants will certainly keep the pond clear if the balance is right, mines been gin clear and is algae free now the pond plants have started to grow and establish...When you have some spare time I would recommend doing a search for couple of y tube channels 'The pond advisor' and 'wild your garden with Joel Ashton' ..The advice they give on pond making is fantastic plus they cover all types of ponds including those with no pumps and filters.

    Hi great video. I’m doing a small pond in my garden and You have helped me see better how to go about the digging out. What did you use under the liner was it sand. And I see you have put liner then another fabric what is that.
    What size was the pond?
    What size liner did you use?

    • @randall6002
      @randall6002  3 роки тому +5

      Thanks Nicky ..I used builders sand to cover the pond before the liner was added ..I also used a fleece unerderlay on top of the sand, then the main liner and on top of that. I added another fleece underlay that was darker in colour on top of the liner to protect it from possible damage from to rocks and stone and the animals that wade in to it .The ponds dimension are -.2.5 by 1.4 meters and 45 cm depth at the deepest part .🙂

      I’m now in the process of digging up the hardcore which is quite deep😂getting rid of it s I can have a live garden back.
      I can’t wait to get my pond installed.
      The large garden I left had a wildlife pond in and after 1 yr we had frogs spawn in it and the following year exactly to the date we had some again. I hope frogs can get into my new garden.

      Sounds like hard work digging up the hardcore but it will all be worth the hard work when you finish the pond and it be ready for early spring next year when the frogs arrive hopefully to spawn.. Good luck with it 👍

    What is the material you add last, over the liner?

    • @randall6002
      @randall6002  9 місяців тому

      It's a protective underlay ,but I placed it on top to protect the liner from the rocks . 👍

    Looks effortlessly natural: did you plan it in advance or use what was available as you went along? How long did it take and what are its rough dimensions? Thanks, I'm looking for ideas right now and yours is right up there at the top.

      Thanks so much for the nice comment.. I did plan most of it in advance I had already started collecting alot of the materials way before I started the build..You're doing the right thing in looking for ideas, watch as many y tube vids has you can and then incorporate the bits you like in to your design..The dimensions are 2.5m long by 1.4 wide and the deepest part is 45cm ...Hope that helps and good luck with your future project 👍

    It looks awesome, but what about filtration to keep the water from becoming full of algae and stagnant?

    • @randall6002

      The pond weed and plants are doing the job of keeping the pond clear and attracting the wildlife that love the conditions created.👍
