My hometown heroes my idols and my friends Big Country! I am also from Dunfermline in Scotland and I want to thank you for featuring them 😊 The sound is very DEFINITELY NOT BAGPIPES though. It's the Scottish folk music tones if accordion and fiddle that you hear trust me, we all grew up hearing the same traditional music here at school. Bagpipes in Scotland are an instrument purely of war, and Stuart was as anti war as a person could be.
No going through this again mate. Sounds like pipes to me with the melody being played against a open string(drone) just as the great highland bag pipes. Yor heads full of magic. Cheers
Todd you should react to Look Away from their 1986 album The Seer. One of their biggest hits in the UK. More straight ahead rock and less bagpipe like. A great tune. Studio version recommended.
Before hearing this song "In a Big Country" was the only Big Country I'd ever heard. Unique for the song title & the band name to be the same. The only other I'm aware of is "Yellow Balloon" by Yellow Balloon!
Todd: that's interesting about them emulating folk instruments. Did they do that on purpose? So far I only hear the "bagpipe" sound. What tracks should I listen to to hear guitars sounding like fiddles, etc.?
Guitar that sounds like the pipes? You should try Scotland's greatest ever band, RUNRIG, not Simple Minds, Big Country or anyone else. It's a deep habit hole (45 years in the industry). As a place to start try, " Only the Brave," "Once in a Lifetime," "Flower of the West," "Proterra" or "The Wire."
It’s hard to pick a favorite Big Country song, but Fields of Fire would definitely be in the competition.
RIP Stuart
You are the best Tony Butler
Mark and Bruce... KEEP on doing what you do.. We await for you in the USA
Stay Alive ..
What a fantastic song. Great band - their live version is even better.🎸🎸♥️♥️ Thank you so much for your reaction. It's very much appreciated.
Big Country one of the best Scottish bands ever. Nice video.
Have you listened to their forerunners The Skids? Into The Valley was brilliant.
