I was in that crowd, the ballrooms floor is sprung due to it's original purpose of being a dance hall so when you have 2000 people jumping around it's crazy and you're sure the floor is coming down. One of the greatest underrated bands of all time.
Makes me sad to think I'll never see BC with Stuart. I've seen them a couple of times with Bruce singing and they are excellent but watching them live with Stuart looks amazing. Is this the Barrowlands? If so I agree totally about the sprung dance floor. Amazing when there's a bounce on the go.
@@randalpmcmurphy1340 yes mate it's the Barrowlands Ballroom, seen many a great band there. To my mind it may be small but it's one of the best venues in the world.
Brother on the stage!! 😂 Tony Butler one of the best bassists out there. He played bass on albums of Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, and The Pretenders. He was actually asked to join the Pretenders. He chose Big Country.
Saw BC live more than a dozen times between 1987 and 2000. Unbelievable energy EVERY time! Highlight was possibly Stuart Adamson on stage, solo with an acoustic guitar (and he was some guitar player!) singing Come Back to Me, just him, his guitar and one spotlight. Silence from the crowd! Absolutely spellbinding. RIP Stuart, you are missed
An utterly astounding band live. I saw them about that time at the Edinburgh Playhouse. There were fears the dress circle would come down due to everyone dancing along
Big Country touched your soul through their Celtic based stories, where the pride of the people and sometimes shame, oooozed out of Stuarts Lyrics, The smalles part of my DNA is Celtic, but this group always made me love and relate to that portion of myself, the most. Til this day, I can not listen to this group, without shedding tears for one of the greatest musicians we ever lost.
It was my 3rd Big Country gig , New Years Eve 83/84 if I remember right, Still itch from the Glitter Ball explosion 💥 39 years on I’m still following Big Country, yes a different lineup with no Stuart and Tony but i still get the buzz in my mid 50’s as I did when I was 17 , bring on next years 40th anniversary tour of The Crossing… Stay alive
The brotha on bass is Tony Butler. The same guy flying through the air in Pretenders on the chain gang video and singing harmony on let my love open the door. One of the best bassits in the world.
400 miles is the distance between Edinburgh and London where big country use to travel often on a train, and on the train where service men going back to barracks.and big country wondered how many service men they shared there time time with got killed for no reason.
Been in the Barrowlands many a time; what a venue. Two thousand people packed in to create an amazing atmosphere on a sprung floor. Joyous. And Big Country were amazing live. RIP, Stuart Adamson.
Big Country were an AMAZING live band. Fields of Fire was a beloved live number, but there were so many others where the boys would just deliver incredibly, especially frontman Stuart Adamson. Porrohman ALWAYS impresses, and there are are few different high quality live performance videos on here to find for that one. There's also other high energy bangers like Tall Ships Go, Angle Park and Wonderland, as well as proper epic numbers like The Seer and Eiledon, which are as much about emotional power as sonic intensity. These guys were just awesome in general.
An iconic Scottish band at an iconic Scottish venue. Hearing this makes me proud to be a Scot! More Scottish bands please! There's nothing quite like a Scottish crowd! 🤘 🏴
If anyone is interested, Stuart Adamson's daughter, Kirsten Adamson, has her own UA-cam channel where she covers her Dads songs as well as her own songs. She's a fantastic artist! Clearly, has inherited her father's musical genetics. I'm sure she would appreciate all of you guys sending her over some love ❤ ua-cam.com/users/KirstenAdamsonvideos
Stuart Adamson wrote this song after meeting some soldiers coming back from the Falkland Islands war on a train. 400 miles is the distance from Edinburgh, Scotland to London, England. This song was on their debut album The Crossing that came out in 1983. Surely you must have heard of In a Big Country. That song was written after this song.
As a Scot I see the 400 miles as the distance from London to Scotland. No words were spoken, no smiles until the Scottish Border was reached. To me this is a protest song, protesting London rule over a foreign country which is 382 miles away. When we have independence this should be Scotland's new National Anthem.
When you said there was a brother in the house, it was bassist Tony Butler. He played on the Pretenders Back On The Cain Gang. With Big Country drummer Mark Brzezicki, they played on Pete Townshend albums Empty Glass and All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes.
Stuart adamson plays his guitar to sound like bagpipes. It’s cooler when you know that. Fields of fire is the name given to the county in Scotland they came from. Fife. All the coal fields were there. Fife was the fields of fire.
Love your videos guys, enjoy watching you find the music I cherish. And today, wow, my all time favourite band FROM MY HOME TOWN!!!!! Stuart Adamson lead guitar & vocals, Bruce Watson guitar, Tony Butler bass, and Mark Brzezicki on drums. Stuart was my hero, my idol and my friend. As far as I'm concerned the greatest songwriter I've ever known and a truly unique guitarist. This particular gig was at Glasgiw Barrowlands on Hogmany (New year if ye're no Scottish) 1983/4, so Sori was right with both years lol. The song is from their debut album, The Crossing, released earlier in 83. Stuart Adamson was guitarist for The Skids prior to BC, and if you've ever watched a NO Saints game, you've heard The Skids. They wrote The Saints Are Coming, their run out song. Anyway, thanks so much for covering this and greetings fae Bonnie Scotland 🏴🤘🏴

I'm hugely defensive about Big Country/Stuart Adamson and this song.. I think that after 21, this song loses most of it's thump. I was one of our group who knew every song from The Crossing and made sure others suffered our shout/singing.. I obviously pulled back in my 20/30s but I always would shove In a Big Country onto youtube, or Chance, just to feel nostalgic. Hearing about Stuart Adamson apparently killing himself was a strange moment in time for most of us.. I hate that he has gone because he was such a kind man and a talent,,

Stuart Adamson Rock in Peace. Adamson was founder of the bands Skids (synth, voc, g), Big Country (lead-voc, g) and The Raphaels. He was found dead in his hotel room at the Best Western Plaza Hotel, Honolulu, Hawaii on December 16, 2001. As a cause of death suicide was assumed by hanging, an accident was excluded. The autopsy of his body revealed that Adamson had a blood alcohol concentration of 2.79 per mill on the day of his death

Very good song, I had never heard of this band before, thanks to everyone who made it possible. One question, does the riff during the verse reminds anyone else of the "Should I stay or should I go" riff by The Clash?

My favorite of all their all their albums. And yes. I have them all.
