A survey carried out by the BBC in 1990 found that the BBC Two presentation launched in 1985 gave the channel a ‘worthy but dull’ image. Then-controller Alan Yentob saw a major change of identity was necessary.
Branding agency Lambie-Nairn were commissioned, and on 16 February 1991, the new custom ‘2’ - and the signature colour, viridian - were unveiled on BBC Two, in idents that would successfully change public perception, and become world famous.
The ‘2’ always appeared in the same shape, in various forms; the earliest idents of 1991 featured solely inanimate ‘2’ figures of different material in each, but also made use of camera angle tricks and properties such as refraction to achieve various effects.
In later years it was given character, taking the form of a remote-controlled car, a rubber duck, a Dalek and a toy dog among many others. The expansive set of idents from 1991 to 2001 - lasting over a decade - are generally regarded as the best idents ever produced for a television channel; they ended in November 2001. The BBC corporate logo was updated within the idents in October 1997, though the idents moved away from the original viridian colour scheme in these latter years.

These are the best idents on TV ever, anywhere in the world. Forget the overly hyper American idents. Martin Lambie-Nairn was a bloody genius. He gave life to the bold "2". This set of idents is simple, yet undoubtedly, undeniably creative. For the vast majority of them, I sense very little stimulation, although I wonder how people who are sensitive to overstimulation feel about a couple of the main ones like "Neon" and "Firecracker". Too good a set of idents. No wonder they lasted for ten years originally and then got their second wind seven years ago.

Amazing that these have been around 24 years and still feel fresh. I feel oddly attached to them and will mourn the inevitable day when they are moved on.

BBC2/BBC Two Special Idents
The easy way to tell the tdifference between the idents is the BBC logo used:
First one is revived (varied for location, present logo)
Second one is original (1988-1997 logo)
+Daniel Davies The second "original" logo was from 1991, but not 1988.
+ccateni WAN They actually did bring the logo originally used in the in the first runthrough of the 1991-2001 BBC 2 idents in 1988, but it was not technically seen on until late 1989/early 1990 in the copyright notices, followed by their appearance in the BBC on air identity overhaul in 1991.

Berlin Wall 29 October - 9 November 1994 Another special ident was used to coincide with the season on the Tales from Berlin and the collapse of the Berlin Wall. The Great Berlin Wall in the mid-center of a "2" gets hoisted away by a crane to reveal a 2-shaped hole and see a dark blue sky background in the center area of Berlin.
