The smaller watch is something I'm starting to learn to enjoy - I have a few 34mm to 38mm watches that I really am loving more and more ... and I have an 8' wrist.

I really disagree with the "too small" part. 30-35mm was more than a standard for literally half a century or even more.

My is 35 mm, wearing it in a miliatay few decades and was nevery hyped that it is too small. The larger size would be impratcical when being in the filed.

Solid advice 1-4 but I disagree on the "small watches" advice. I wear dress watches most of the time and they look good to me in the 33mm-36mm range. I'm 5'9" with a 6.75 inch wrist FWIW. But I like the fact that so many guys have been brainwashed into thinking these watches are "too small" or "for women." It drives down the prices.

I think it is very unfortunate that so many men are too self conscious to wear a "small" watch. I can wear a 32mm dress watch and it looks great! I even get compliments on it. I think its mostly in guys heads. If you like the watch, wear it. Most people don't look at your wrist anyway.

You are so right about size. I am a small person, 5 foot 3 inches, and wearing “normal” mans watch of 42mm or more looks silly on me. The better manufacturers realise that people come in all shapes and sizes, so they make “mid-size” versions of their classics. I have a mid-size Rolex Datejust, a mid-size Omega Seamaster James Bond automatic and a mid-size Oris pointer date big crown and they are all a joy to wear.

My late Aunt gave me a Cartier watch,. Even though this watch had a great reputation, I preferred my Casio, because the Casio gives exact time, it's an atomic watch. And this watch was easier to read and this watch gives me the date. I found the Casio watch more practical. A watch gives me extremely valuable information and I want this information accurate and accessible.

My dress watch is a $100 Skagen I bought on sale at Nordy's for $50. It's neat and tidy in design, all titanium, very slim and super light. What's not to like? My racing watch is a stainless-steel Invicta my wife bought for me for maybe $100 because it was cheap, and it's been with me long enough to be scraped up and bloodied on the trails. I don't protect it. It's a cheap watch, but I value it because of the adventures it has been with me on. I detest the look of some uber-expensive diver watches, over-sized pilot watches and fancy chronographs adorning otherwise extremely average wrists. It's not like most Rolex wearers are adventurers. I'd hazard a minority of Omega or Breitling owners fly, dive, race or explore. Worst, these watches do not display frugality. Just an opinion. I like your video.

I think vintage gold-plated can be fine, if it's a hard to find model. Also, I think wearing small vintage is subjective. I have a 32mm steel Omega Seamaster from 1958 which I really like, it's just how they were made back then. But then, my recent purchase is a Panerai 1950 47mm.

Good video, good advice. I own a couple of vintage pieces... I've been lucky enough not to have issues yet but I rotate my watches and don't wear them every day. When it comes to service, I take care of it myself, being servicing pocket and wristwatches for over 10 years. Watch size does matter but at least a nice 33-36 mm solid gold on ones collection is a must have for special occasions.

Anthony. I have a 2 tone gold plated Tag Heuer 200m Pro from 1986, a quartz one. It has been on the wrist as an everyday watch for 25 years. Yes, if you stare at it, you can see that the plating is thin in places in the bezel now, but it does not make the watch look any crappy because it is not so obvious.
I feel that if after so much usage you can see signs of wear, it is not so terrible. Particularly if the watch is one you like! Given this experience with Tag Heuer, I do not see the point of paying much more €€€ to get something in solid gold.

  • @Mas_Tun
    @Mas_Tun 5 років тому

Generally great advice. Although I don't think getting someone a Skagen was a bad idea for you. A new Skagen can be had for like 60ish if you shop around. If you pay retail, then it's 150ish give or take. They can certainly last for at least the battery life, probably longer, and, unfortunately, the better-bang-for-the-buck companies don't always offer those same minimalist looks (though Seiko has some gorgeous dress watches in the 100 range). Obviously Skagen and the like do not even compare to a watch which doesn't even compare to a Nomos, but it's like 3-5% the price. Price per wear isn't bad, especially when you consider the cost to clean or maintain the Nomos, and you can test the waters to gauge what you or other people prefer.

I would feel more uncomfortable wearing a 44mm watch than a 32mm watch. Wearing a 32mm watch just tells everybody you don't care about what they think and you just wear what you like. I wear a 24x36 Girard P with pride and I have a couple of 34-36 other watches and my SKX007 rarely gets any wrist time purely because of its size. I had a friend who thought my watches were so small, but then he got into watches and now he's exactly like me, I feel like there's a correlation between your interest and the size decreasement (If that makes any sense), I might be wrong but I've seen it a lot. I totally get your point though, however it seams like we're going down a bit in size in general which is really cool imo

Hello Anthony. New subscriber here. I’m guilty of being a sucker for gold dress watches. They are like cat nip to me. I pay way below £100 knowing that they will likely only last a couple of years.
I wouldn’t say Skagen are a fashion watch. They’ve been around for a few decades, long before the Daniel Wellington and MVMT Brigade came into being. They are smart minimal slim quartz watches. I’ve had one for 10 years as my beater and will never get rid of it 😁

Gold plating = electrochemical process where micron levels of gold are adhered to the product. It will wear off after time, affected by chemicals and shampoos and body chemistry.
Rolled Gold Plating = (old school) is actual gold (very thin layer) bonded to a base metal (like tin or whatever paper clip is made of) but the top surface has actual layer of gold, but still not enough that you can cut and get any gold weight. They will last a lot longer (like vintage watches) but due to the metals used in the base they can oxidize and tarnish or turn over time.
Gold Application = true gold (14k or 18k) on a watch, usually on the dials or bezel.
Don’t get gold bracelet watches - it’s soft and will wear down. Not for everyday use!!
Hope this helps, I am in the jewelry mfg industry (but like watches lol)

Thanks for this video. While always a watch fan I have only recently decided to start putting together a modest collection. So, thanks for being that consideration to the market!

Some people have already commented on this but it’s also a mistake to buy watches that are too big for your wrist. I have a 7 inch wrist and anything over 40-41mm just looks silly. I’m a big Seiko 5 fan and I now have 4 of them, all in the 37-39mm range. They’re dirt cheap, relatively speaking of course, and a great value IMO.

    • @a97b18b

malbug agree. I’ve lost weight and my wrist are 6.25-6.5 42mm is the biggest which is my skx but prefer smaller like 37.
Received a SKX013 midsize last week and fell in love with it! I do wish I didn’t have girly arms bc there’s not many good looking small watches that I can afford besides Seiko5

    • @malbug
      @malbug 6 років тому

Jon The bracelets on the Seiko 5s are kinda crummy but you can get some decent looking leather straps for around $20-$25 and it makes the watches look a lot more expensive. Plus, there’s so many to choose from you’re bound to find something you like. Glad you like your SKX013. It is a shame though that there aren’t more affordable watches in that 36-39 range from other watch makers.

Great video with well needed home truths...You're spot on about servicing costs on vintage watches. Been into vintage Omegas for quite a few years but recently I've been moving away from vintage after some very expensive repair/servicing bills on them. Latest was £450 on a 1954 Omega Seamaster. Lovely watch with a roulette wheel calendar which needed a new mainspring and other bits replaced plus a service. £450!!! Ouch!!! Replaced some of my vintage Omegas with a Rolex Explorer 36mm (love it, love it) and bought an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Quartz as my every day, pick it up, put it on, don't worry about it watch. Still have a few vintage Omegas but now they get very little 'wrist time' and will probably all be sold by the end of the year. :-(

Excellent advice. Back in the 80s I bought a bi colour dress Raymond Weil. Paid a $1000 for it AND its Quartz! It matched my wedding ring, it's small too at around 36mm. Saw one advertised recently for £100!
HOWEVER I still like it and its very thin too, it mainly gets worn for weddings or with a suit. Not all bad either as I bought it on my first trip to the USA so it will always remind me of that. I also inherited a 1948 Rolex but at 30mm it's unwearable. An Omega too much nicer and 35mm so I have worn that one a couple of times. I would never be tempted to buy vintage.
Fortunately I have not fallen into any of the other traps but had I watched this video, or know what I know now, things might of been different.

What’s your opinion on titanium made watches, Anthony ? Does the “matt” and very scratch visible surface on the case and bracelet scares you ? I’m thinking on the Pelagos. Excellent advice J Anthony, I prefer stainless steel watches then gold plated watches because the fake gold always fade away. It is better to buy an Invicta or Seiko watch then a fashion watches. I have heard of story of lower middle class people buying a cheap used Mercedes, BMW and Audi and unable to pay the expensive cost to fixed the car. I agree people should stay away of watches with high complications. People should not buy a vintage watches if there are no parts available for repair. Many of the vintage watches are gold filled. This is usually a very durable and long lasting finish. It is a layer of gold bonded to base metal. I don't believe they make gold filled anymore. Too expensive to make. The gold plating on the new watches is terrible. Just a few micros of electroplate which will wear out very quickly.

  • @Peter-tc3ep

I own two Rolex’s which are not my most expensive watches by far but are my most expensive watches to service. Rolex replacement parts and frequency of Rolex’s needing service makes me personally add them to my not very interested in watches any more. I’m 6’4” with a 7.25” wrist and still prefer 36-40mm watches, for myself anything over 40mm seems to become uncomfortable to wear. I do like that the very recent trend in watches is to become a bit smaller again, went from tacky Breitling or bell and Ross beast sized watches to more like nomos 36-39mm or Rolex sized watches 35-40mm. I think even bell and Ross has trimmed back from 44-45mm to 42mm. Those large heavy watches just aren’t comfortable to wear all day. I’ll take a nomos any day as my all day watch or A. Lange and Sohne, nice light weight, thinner and comfortable with great in house movement.

Your comments on size, finding parts for vintage watches, factoring in servicing to the purchase cost, especially when buying complicated watches or brands in the upper tier of watch making are spot on. I have only 2 gold plated new watches but some years ago. They’re fine for dress purposes, but generally I avoid them when buying new. If buying vintage, it can be a different story, as long as the plating/capping/ gold fill is in good condition, but only when using for dress or office work purposes, nit active, outdoorsie activities. Chrome plated is a no no. Gold can be replayed, chrome not so much. As for the fashion watch, minimalist craze, I don’t like it either, but as you’ve said yourself, occasionally they have their place as jewellery bling wrist candy. Again, they’ve got to be cheap and cheerful, no more than a $100 I think. Thankfully, I’ve avoided them all together, even though I see them everywhere every day. Just my take on what you’ve said. Cheers.

i think the fifth tip is a matter of habit. I thought anything less than 40 mm on my wrist would be ridiculous but vintage watches of 35 and 36 mm are also a good size. In the beginning it looks off, but after a couple of times it looked more and more natural. I also got the Bulova Accutron 214 Spaceview, but that was really too small with a size of only 32 mm. No wonder I sold it later :-)

Thank you!! I really agree in most of your points. However sizes are, from my point of view, critical depending on the user and design. To make myself easyer to understand. Rolex datejust 36 is well designed and proportioned. 41 had to be redisigned as they grew it the wrong way. Submariners 40 with the desproportioned maxi case: thick lugs and unproportioned bracelet are way wrong. The new pepsi redisigned that case and bracelet....so we should expect new generation and design on the cases as the JamesCameron DSSD did in Basel 2018. Datejust were redisigned and went back in size. FMPV huge watches are nor classy nor well proportined and the might shrink soon.

Fact number 2 is why a Shinola is actually great watches for the money. With a lifetime warranty, you can always have the movement replaced if it powers out. Fact number 3 is a good reason not everyone should own a mechanical watch. You might be able to initially purchase a Hamilton, but not every can afford to spend another $500 or more every 3-5 years.

Anthony, I really loved this video. It made me laugh because you were so animated. And that is what I like about your reviews. Because in that animation is the brutal honesty that I enjoy. I’ve broken a few of those rules myself. I have some plated and DLC watches that look stunning. Which is why I got them. I collect what speaks to me, and some of those are plated. For myself, I know my size range is 37mm-47mm and my sweet spot is 40mm-44mm. I know that will spark a big reaction in a lot of others. But for me, that is what works. It’s videos like this that I enjoy the most. You give us your honest opinions and feelings. And that is what works. As always, all the best!-Mark

I would like to point out one important aspect of gold-plated watches. There is a world of difference between gold-plated and gold-filled. These days, almost every gold thing that is not solid gold is actually gold-plated, which has an infinitesimal layer of gold surrounding it (which is measured in terms of atoms). The amount of gold is so small that minor scratches cut through the gold layer, eventually exposing the lesser metal underneath. Many vintage pieces are gold-filled which are like gold-plated items in that they are gold covering a lesser metal, but they use significantly more gold. When something is gold-filled the layer of gold is thick enough that the piece will have all of the same properties as a solid gold item. It is possible that a major scratch or other significant wear can break through the layer of gold, but this is much less frequent and the consequences are much less severe.

I understand that it won't last, but I've always liked the old Datometer, so I went ahead and bought it. And I know some people will throw them away after the batteries run out. Can't say the same about JLG if it doesn't fit your style after a few years. Depending on the maker, and their recommended service intervals...but some as short as every 5 years, most in 10 for sure.. leaving it longer than that, even if it's working fine, can cause wear and damage that will eventually cost more . Painfully more on some brands. Think of it as an oil-change for your higher-end car. if the manufacturer says 5000km... and you run it for 8000km.. you might get away with it, and just have a goopy oil change.. or... you might melt something by pushing it. Aston Martins have a required service every year. it might cost between 5-15 thousand dollars... but on a $300 thousand car.. it's insurance. if you skip it, and it blows... you've voided your warranty, and are now paying a lot of hard cash.... $500 service on a $10k watch every 5 years ... not that bad if you look at it the right way. Look after your toys, and they'll give you a lifetime of pleasure , like a '67 'Vette.

My thing with #4: You have a solid point, but in the case of a European cars, when you can afford the service you can't enjoy the car. With a high complication watch, if you let it go without service you can still wear it as jewelry. Andy Warhol used to wear a broken Cartier tank and he would tell people he bought it because it's the thing to wear, but he doesn't care what time it is. Kinda douchey and snobby and I wouldn't adopt that as an ethos, but it is kind of a cool way to play it off lol.

Point 1 yes I agree dont buy gold plated they simply do not hold up well.
But as far as everything else you had to say I somewhat disagree with . 90% of my collection are 70 to 100 years old. Never have had an issue with fixing or service . if need be you can have the part you need made.
Smaller wathes simply look better as well compaired to these 44 to 50 mm poorly designed p.o.s made today a watch should be elegant show status and classy . that is something most watches today do not do
Now the high end watches not sure where you live or get yours serviced but myself I have never paid more than 165 for any watch to be serviced rather it be a grand seiko rolex Girard ulysee. .
I have thousands of watches fro 10 $ times to r w smith yes you need to be prepared but firstly need to learn to care store a watch properly that will save a lot of wear and tear and minimize repair needs

I don't think all gold plating comes off. I've a few Emporio Armanis that are rose-gold plated and they haven't faded. Or even with regards to pens- 99% of Mont Blanc pens- the best pens on the market- are gold or platinum plated and again, they do not fade.
I don't think everyone cares about movement. I've Armanis and a tag- I buy them because I like the look of them; I don't care about what movement they use and neither do a lot of people who keep these companies going.
