  • This is my 1990 Chrysler Imperial - The second attempt at buying a car for my ex... except I broke up with her a few months later, and the car's sat at my parent's place for the past 3 or 4 years. Hoping to get it on the road this year. She needs an alternator, and the air suspension pump needs repaired.

    I always loved the Chrysler Imperial...as well as the 2 New Yorker variants below it.
    I'm a sucker for 80s and 90s Mopars
    Take good care of it as these Imperials are rare nowadays.

    Yeah, I agree with you... Almost all of Chrysler's cars in the mid 80's through early 90's until the introduction of the LH bodies were based off of the K bodies. The Imperial is just a slightly elongated New Yorker, which is an upgraded Dynasty, etc.

    @general0ne It is '90 too (and imperial too), and is imported from the US (Belvidere, Ill; according with the serial number). I like your car-videos collection, its amazing; I didn't know the Dodge Polara!

    @cromorne I think the sundance has almost 170K on it. not sure about the Imperial. The imperial is in good shape but there's some floor rot that I have to repair. It's been undercoated. The sundance wasn't undercoated, and there's hardly a spot of rust on it underneath. The imperial also has the original transmission....

    Yeah, most of them do seem to fail after a fluid change. Either the wrong fluid is used, or just worn friction material in the fluid helps to keep it working. Mine is sluggish to shift on cold mornings, and drops into limp mode because I believe the internal seals are worn, but as long as it's still working, I'm not going to touch it.

    Well, Chrysler did start putting more modern gizmos when they launched the Concorde in 1993. That was when they started competing with Lexus.
    The only car like this one more recently was the last generation Lincoln Town Car (which I never got used to) now bit the dust in favor of the MKS, which looks bigger and better IMHO.
    The Imperial, however, is better than one of those newer Town Cars.

    I don't recall the size of the fittings that I used, but I did take some photos of the assembly while I was making the repair. I'll see if I can find those photos and make up a quick video within the next few days.

    @gimaj90 Okay. I wasn't aware that they didn't come with the digital stuff, unless it was a really early model. Or was it a Mexican model (originally sold by a dealer in Mexico)? Would be interesting to see a video of it if you end up getting it. Make sure you check out the floors in the front. These cars have a tendency to start to rust around where the parking brake cable goes through the floor (see my other videos of this car). Though that might not be a problem in your drier climate.

    @cjh1618 of course it was a good song! we don't play bad music in Mopars around here :)

  • @gimaj90

    @general0ne USD too. I live in México, but the person that sells the car want USD instead mexican money. And it is in good condition too, but the instruments panel is analog, and it doesn't has the climatizer control, but has A/C.

  • @general0ne
    @general0ne  13 років тому

    @gimaj90 Is the car registered in Mexico or the US? I know in my state, we can get a replacement title if it is lost. Don't know about other states or Mexico though I would think you would be able to. You should still see if you can get a video of it!

  • @cromorne

    @general0ne I know about the rust. I had a 1996 Dodge Dakota that was just rotting away. Floor boards, rockers, everywhere. Chrysler isn't known for rust resistance!

  • @general0ne
    @general0ne  13 років тому

    @gimaj90 Sure it's first gear? I bet it's stuck in "limp home" mode - the transmission computer locks it into second gear when it detects a fault so that you can at least drive the car home. Mine does this when it's REALLY cold, and restarting the car will clear it, and it works fine after that. If it's doing it ALL the time, than the transmission probably needs rebuilt, though it could be a sensor or wiring problem as well.

  • @gimaj90
    @gimaj90 13 років тому

    @general0ne Ooops... The car now has a huge problem with the transmission... It doesn't release the First Gear!! I didn't have a camcorder with me when I went to see the car again... Too bad!! :(

  • @general0ne
    @general0ne  12 років тому

    Mine actually has over 150K on the original trans o.O Mine is just the freak in the family lol. I don't think these cars had subs, at least in the sense that more modern cars do. Each speaker has its own woofer and EMIT ribbon tweeter, and each has its own powered amp. There's also two unpowered midranges in the dash. I've had to rebuild the amps on both of the front door speakers, but I agree, the sound almost sounds as if it's coming from outside the car.

    How many miles are on the imperial and the sundance? That Imperial is in excellent shape for being 20 years old.

  • @general0ne
    @general0ne  13 років тому

    @somewhatlongdong I bought the car for the girl that I was dating at the time, and broke up with shortly after. I had other vehicles that I was driving, so I really had no use for this one, so it just sat at my parent's place.

    Tell you what. The Imperial was a good car. It was a shame the 81 version including the Frank Sinatra edition they couldn't get the electronic fuel injection right. That would have put them way ahead of GM and Ford. Loved the digital display. Do you still have this car. If so interested in selling it

  • @general0ne
    @general0ne  13 років тому

    @gimaj90 Not a bad price. What year is it? I'm pretty sure all the US Imperials had the digital instruments and climate control - not sure about in Mexico, though. Is it an Imperial, or is it a New Yorker or Dynasty? They're all the same general body style.

    @gimaj90 13 років тому

    @general0ne Well... Maybe if the seller wants to go to get copies of titles... I hope so... But something is not right... I don't know why, but I suspect that this person did some illegal movement with this car... Of course I hope I'm wrong!

    What did you end up doing with the car?

    • @general0ne
      @general0ne  4 роки тому

      I had been driving it for quite a while until the transmission failed. Unfortunately due to financial and time issues, I sold the car for scrap maybe five years ago.

    • @cdos9186
      @cdos9186 4 роки тому

      @@general0ne That really hurts.....these cars are rare enough. How reliable are the transmissions & common problems with these? I hope to buy one of these cars one day.

    • @general0ne
      @general0ne  4 роки тому +1

      @@cdos9186 I have to agree. Unfortunately, when being able to keep a roof over your head relies on the fact that you have a vehicle to get to work, when that vehicle fails beyond quick and practical repair, you find another before getting fired...
      This car had other issues as well, including having very little solid floorboard left in the front (the perils of living in the rustbelt), as well as various electrical gremlins which would set off the alarm and/or drain the battery overnight if the battery wasn't disconnected.
      The transmission is by far the biggest failure point in these cars. The a604 (at least the earlier models) was probably Chrysler's most failure-prone transmission, and being a 1990, this car had one of the first, as the transmission was introduced in 1989.
      When I purchased this car, the fuel injectors leaked. Not sure if this was a common problem or not.
      The A/C system was problematic as it was designed for R12, and used a variable displacement compressor. When it did work, it didn't work very well (this very well may be due to old and worn parts, I never did get the chance to install a new compressor).
      Air suspension - The compressor is mounted under the rear of the car. If it's a miracle and the compressor still works, the shocks will be bad for sure, and they have internal sensors, so there's no chance of using the stock leveling system with new shocks, unless you cobble together some sort of switch to tell the computer when the car is at the "proper" height. I replaced my chocks with Gabriel Hi-Jackers, and used a portable air tank in the trunk to adjust the ride height.
      ELECTRICAL. This is a 30 year old car with digital and electronic everything. Most chances the the climate control will not work, as the motor will seize up if the heater core leaks. Plus other "wear" items such as door switches, window and lock controls, seat controls, and the electric headlight doors, which, if you are lucky and the motor still works, the bushings will probably be bad, and the doors will still not open, or better yet, you'll be driving down the highway at night, and the doors with randomly flip closed. Keep bungee cords on hand at all times.
      Don't get me wrong, I loved this car, and if I had unlimited funds, I would have had it professionally restored, but if I had unlimited funds, I'd still have my '68 Polara as well....
