    I could understand if the description of the perfume was trash or they made the perfume smell offensive but it is a well loved and popular fragrance. No ill intentions. People have way too much time and issues. Please poll ACTUAL “gypsies” and see if they are offended about a beautiful fragrance being named as it is. I guarantee its the woke, white, highly educated, upper middle class Gen Z’s/millennial’s who love telling others how to think and are holier than thou who are making all the fuss. FACTS

    I’m wondering if it’s ok to enjoy anything anymore? It seems like the list is narrowing. I was watching a home decor vlog the other day and someone said that we must come up with a different name for the “master” bedroom. I don’t know why, but it made me feel sad or angry. I still can’t work out what I felt. There’s just so much in life that deserves our attention and people are looking for ways to find offense. 😔

      @@jkdw I think this country has come so far(USA) in combatting a lot of racism. We fought a war over it and many men died fighting to end it. I would, just once, like to see people give credit where it is due. We aren't perfect and never will be this side of heaven. I just don't understand the obsession of some folks on race. I actually think the word "racist' has been watered down and it's nearly lost its meaning. Of course we will always have racists as well as other garbage humans...and we should always try to be better...but I love my country, flaws and all, and most of us just want to go to work in the morning, make enough to feed our families and enjoy what little time we have on earth. I also think, perhaps, we should clean up our own side of the street before we go off on society and white people as a whole as "racist". It's really gross! We've come a long way and probably have a long way to go...People who are dark-skinned are desperately trying to come to America...some legally, some not....maybe they know they will, by and large, get a fair shot here.
      This country is so blessed and most of us, if we do the right things, can have a good shot at a decent life...no matter what color you are. By and large, we are a decent people...the media wants to tell us we're not and that we're all baddies and racist. I find it completely disgusting.

  • @danielintheantipodes6741
    @danielintheantipodes6741 3 роки тому +16

    Do the Romany people themselves find the word 'gypsy' offensive? That is the crucial point.
    I cannot throw any stones at the creators of this perfume. I had no idea it was an offensive word. I had thought Romany used the word themselves? Indeed, over the years I have heard Romany people using the word from time to time. (That proves nothing in itself. Black people use the other word and that is not okay regardless of whether it is used by a white or black person.)
    I do not approve of using words which offend groups of people. My point is not to say that 'gypsy' is okay, because if Romany find it offensive, it is not okay. Rather, that I want Romany people themselves to make it clear that the word is offensive and then move toward replacing it immediately, as speedily as possible. When outsiders take up the baton devoid of any large scale participation from the insulted minority group, it seems to me to be like mere political correctness rather than an authentic movement to improve the world.
    This is not a brand whose products I admire, so I have no particular partisanship for them.
    I felt sorry for Ben. How on earth was he to know it was an offensive word?!

    • @mk1642
      @mk1642 3 роки тому +6

      Well said Daniel! There is always a honesty in your comments that is increasingly rare nowadays!
      I was scratching my head like crazy last night while joining the debate. Until then, I had no clue the word « gypsy » could be considered as offensive. My imaginary has always linked it to a very beautiful culture on the contrary! Although I do truly respect Eaumilio ‘s point of view, I think he kinda overreacted on this one, in my humble opinion. Because I didn’t want to say anything generic (what for? Political correctness again?), I kinda tried to push the debate further... while constantly being afraid to offend anyone!
      I genuinely don’t think Ben Gorham used the word « gypsy » with the intent to offend /hurt/ look down at a certain category of people. As a consumer, had I seen this perfume on a shop’s counter, I would have thought: « well maybe, the guy who had named this fragrance, was targeting some adventurous and free-spirits people ? ».
      As far as I know, « gypsy » or « tsigan » culture has been always considered as very rich, romanesque and beautiful. Russian and ashkénaze traditional art forms had been heavily inspired by the gypsy cultures (songs like dark eyes, two guitars or kalinka). In the « hunchback of Notre Dame », Esmeralda is clearly described as a beautiful « gypsy » young girl. Her world was indeed depicted in a very attractive manner. True, in the novel, she is victim of a lot of prejudice but isn’t the whole story also an ode to tolerance, after all?
      More recently, the « gypsy kings » have been a household music band worldwide in the 1980s/1990s! No one used to be offended by their name, to my knowledge.
      You are right when u say that if those people are offended by the word « gypsy », they should tell us how to name them.
      Actually, in the French language, there are even much more negative connotations, when we use the word « Rom » (Romany people) than « gitane » or « tsigane » coz sadly, Romany people are often involved in thefts, scams or crimes in France, according to national statistics.
      Robert (a young Russian of tartar ethnicity) and myself (a French of several Asian descents) tried to use our own examples to demonstrate that racism is not only a simple black and white issue and is going well beyond words. Racism is sadly just inherent to mankind: let’s get real, we do all have a black sheep coz we are simply all petrified by the unknown!
      True, instead of constantly searching the controversy and the political correctness (which does not lead to any improvements. Much ado about nothing?), let’s just try to know, learn and understand each other better! That’s personally why I love to join this livestream every week: people from every corner of the globe with different sensibilities, different cultures, different opinions... who like to exchange and share on any subject without any judgments !

      @@mk1642 I personally think the way that Byredo have dealt with the situation has created more of an issue. I know several of us have privately reached out to the company and they have just deleted or not responded to comments/emails. Language moves on and evolves, we all know this. Some terminology that was used in films/TV programmes in the early 00s, would not be accepted now, as it is considered tone deaf and offensive. Like all companies they need to move with the times and take the right steps to understand how to right this wrong.

    • @mk1642
      @mk1642 3 роки тому +2

      @@audrey-jane Sorry Audrey, I did read your comment over lunch but I was so busy at work today that I can respond to you only now. If you blame the way Byredo have dealt with the situation, you have a point... from a business marketing point of view. True, a product is aimed at being the most consensual possible and the marketing strategy has to adapt to the society's current mood and its constant evolutions. Just by looking at the reactions while Dacob was filming the video, Gypsy Water is undeniably a marketing fail. I was reading the comments all night last night, thinking about our debate all day today and couldn't help but recalled of what had happened to brands such as Uncle Ben's, Aunt Jemima, Banania... There were intentionally absolutely nothing racist in their logos, it is the interpretation we do currently have of it that has changed. One basically refers them to a part of the American history that one totally rejects nowadays... The most ironic part is that they were originally more of an homage to cinematographic classical masterpieces such as "Gone with the WInd".
      However, from an ethical point of view, I still keep standing by the fact that there were nothing wrong or malicious behind Ben Gorham's intentions when he chose the name for this specific fragrance. I think when it comes to art forms, although not being the most educated, I still know a tiny bit. Various type of Gipsy cultures have been so widespread in so many Eastern European countries over so many centuries that they have and are still inspiring various artists from different arty industries/ activities. And that's exactly what had happened to Gorham: he was just inspired by the whimsical imaginary of the Gypsy culture . You can see in the comments section I am not the only one sharing this opinion. Many members from those ethnic minorities, do refer themselves as Gypsy, Tsiganes, Romanis, and sometimes, in French as "gens du voyage"( which can be translated by travelling people).
      So, if one follows last saturday's new moral injonctions, shall one rewrites "the hunchback of Notre Dame"? Shall one renames the historical French Cigarette brand "la Gitane" as well as the music band "the Gypsy Kings"? And by extension, as a man with Asian heritage, shall I feel offended by Yves Saint Laurent's classic "Opium" which was clearly referring a type of drug to my ethnicity? Shall it be renamed as well?
      All this political correctness, I can't help but thinking about WHITE, Bret Easton Elllis's latest book. Apart from creating more collective hysteria, I highly doubt anything good will result from this: nasty ancestral values will remain, the only difference is that they will be hidden behind this hypocritical smoke screen.... just like those Parisian fashion commercials, Dacob and I were referring to during Chanel last Couture show, who hide their poor hygiene under high-end attires and accessories. Watch out, there will be even more dust and dirt collected if one shakes the carpet, will we keep being on the hunt of the smallest controversy!!!!
      No offense but as a Frenchman of Asian descent who grew up among people from different backgrounds, religions and ethinicities, the whole conversation last saturday, although extremely interesting (I did really enjoy exchanging with Eaumilio and others about this) also made me feel EXTREMELY uncomfortable. Why would it always has to be about the nasty/mean/ guilty"Whites" against the minorities? Why wouldn't it be the other way around? Why wouldn't it also be about as an example, the A minority against the B minority?
      PS: Be careful Audrey, just because I am not totally agreeing with you, doesn't mean I am against you! I still love interracting with you and I bet it's still mutual!!!!

      @@mk1642 As I mentioned above, the lack of communication from Byredo is very frustrating. Dacob has not “cancelled” this company; Dacob has merely suggested that you should not purchase this product based on its inaccuracies and racial slurs. I adore Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but do I think Mickey Rooney should wear prosthetics and portray an Asian man? Absolutely not. Times have changed, you only have to look at history in the last hundred years to see that. Personally, I agree that any conversation that makes you feel uncomfortable is worth having. Although Byredo may not change their marketing of this product due to a small minority of people contacting them; it is a small step in the right direction.

    Common for goodness sake enough of the cheesiness and melodramatic broken record . i was gravitating towards the perfume first hand bc of the name . Gypsy IS NOT an offense it’s a lifestyle just like cottagecore , hippie ,...etc . It’s ok to use words like gypsy . Grow up

      @Gimme Donuts I don't think YOU have the right to decide if the "G" word is offensive or not. Have you heard of the "The European Roma Rights Centre"? Let us see what they say about the "'G" word: "A term used to describe Roma. Amongst most Romani communities this is an offensive racial slur." Please EDUCATE YOURSELF and please stop spreading racism!

      Hatu Atu Topun guess what ? I do have the right bc I’m a human being who lives on this planet . And guess what again ? “gypsy” is just like any other lifestyle and it’s actually MY lifestyle. So now you tell me how can I possibly be racist to myself? And guess what in MY society “gypsy” is offensive . But you know what ? You guys are the real racists to deal with sth so normal as if it was a taboo I mean for god sake you’re the ones who should be getting a brain cause your brain is not functioning at all . Now I describe myself as a gypsy and i know what it means bc it’s a term used in my society which happens to be egypt you idiot and yeah nobody assigned you to be their lawyer . How can I take pride in sth and at same time be racist you broken record idiot ?

    LOL a pasty Caucasian knows all because he's read Wikipedia. How 'bout we let a Roma attack this subject? Regardless, you could have said all this in much fewer words. Brevity is a virtue.

      Aww you feel threatened cuz you like Byredo miss thing? And a ratchet homophobe who tried to sound smart in my comment sections while only embarrassing themselves. The entire segment was prepared in consultancy with my dear friend, who is Roma. So eat your heart out Karen. Go spew your bitter hate to the manager at Byredo instead of annoying us here.

      No, you are actually for once in the very straight forward and honest part of UA-cam. You have just watched so many fake attitude videos that when you cross upon an honest video for a change, you feel like you are going into a tilt. The Plato cave syndrome baby… time to wake up, turn around and see the sun.

      Perfume has no ability to be racist; I’m sure you intended to say that you perceive the name of the perfume to be racist. Got it.

      @@DubstepEnjoyr “The HIV issue: a secret genocide
      Many children were taken from their families to be re-educated. These orphanages were actually lager. In the 80s many children, Roma and not, contracted HIV through blood transfusions performed in hospitals of the Socialist Republic of Romania.
      As if that wasn’t enough, in the last years of Ceausescu’s dictatorship, thousands of Romanian children were infected on purpose by the HIV virus.
      It was a massive experiment, wanted and paid for by a multinational pharmaceutical company, made on the backs of orphans, that no one would’ve ever cried and, moreover, they were a burden for the system. Children aged two to twelve years.” Taken from this article t.co/WaqYnR7yPf

    Barely started the video but already triggered by the disgusting comments.'Oh poor me i cant be a biggot anymore boohoo'🤮.Why did this video attract them???That word is a slur. We had a candy over here ( marshmallow fluff covered in chocolate) with the most disgusting name. Every country has a normal name for it except for us. I'm not even going to repeat it its so horrible. They just changed the name a couple years ago by removing that disgusting word. We also had a sauce with the slur you're referring to....CANCELLED! And dont get me started on the people here who fighting for the right to keep blackface!
