LOL that party in the sump!
Lol club Refugium, it's where all the cool kids hangout 🤣
The wife is looking stunning! I love the way the light is shimmering through the water. It looks like natural sunlight ☀️ !!!
Solid video. The reef is looking nice in the background too!
Awesome video Michael!! You have a fantastic way of providing great information that is easy to understand. Thanks for all your hard work and I hope you'll make more vids just like this.
Great video man. You hit the important part understanding why it’s there in the first place. Party in the sump was a good one lol.
Always descent videos from Aarons aquariums 👍 keep them coming mate
Decent amount of editing there pal 👍 good few hours well spent 😊 great video mate
Light bulb moment ! now it makes sense, Thank you for making this fun and informative, your best video to date !!!
Fantastic information. We just set up ours and it burst into hair algae. We don’t have sump/refugium set up as we are still in cycle but this is going to help out big time. Thanks
I can appreciate the editing on this video... Nice job Michael!
Best description video I've seen out here!!! Thanks!!!
Awesome, been having major issue's with GHA, bought a seahare it died 3 days in, think it got sucked into the wave maker. Huge clean up crew, nothing was taking care of it. Then funnily enough I thought about a refugeum and the way in which it would take over the nutes and you confirmed it for me, off out to buy stuff now, ty
Decades back. As a teen. Knew nothing about parameters. Had no test kits. Overfed. Almost no water changes..
Nitrates were probably thru the roof, man.
Dolomite substrate. Fish only lived 3 to 5 years in that water.
Never had green hair algae in saltwater.
Not really in my fresh tanks either.
Had Under gravel filters.
Love the shimmer on the tank looks so natural 👌 great video once again mucka
Step 1 : buy any kind of tang
Step 2 : sit down and watch
Seriously though, I got major green hair algae outbreak, because my local store is closed during holidays season, and I can't do water change for 3 weeks (since it is a nano tank, water change is a must for me)
I buy 1 Blue Rimmed surgeon fish, and less than a week, he clean 90% of the algae, to the point that I am afraid that all the algea will be gone and it will starve when there is no algae anymore. Fortunately he eat pellets as soon as the algae is gone, what a champ!
my tank won’t fit a tang so i got a tuxedo urchin lol
Wasted at club refuge! You should film there for now on. Seem like that where the cool kids are having all the fun. Nice editing man. Great video.
Again, super video mate, you are amongst very few reefers who are my go to for advice. Question, any advice for noobs who don’t have a refugium? Any advice for a fowlr canister setup?
Great video Michael and lots of very good information. Love the transitions too... All the best...
Thanks Scott.
Simply explained, great update Aaron! 👍
Man, you definitely need to make some T-shirts of the algae rave lol!! I’ll buy 3 of em.
Undetectable nitrate and 12ppb phos hair algae dying everywhere ! I just have to keep up with turkey basting the rock and siphoning the reef on water changes.
Kevin Jones siphoning the reef and turkey basting ?
Thank you for the information we shall see how it goes it has been growing on my live rock rapidly
How did you get on?
I was watching other videos that said algae doesn't utilise co2 like plants do
Fantastic video and so easy to under and entertaining 👍
I have a problem with wanting to keep my refugium clean as well as the display tank! This is probably why I’m still fighting algae in the display?
Will this work on an outside pond? Pond full of hair agle, its also a fresh water system.
Lots of good info here!
Speaking the truth!
Does micro algae work
what other options are there to get rid of hair algae when a refugium is not possible?
Sup Aaron. How effective do you think an algae turf scrubber can be to help eliminate algae from the main display?
Thanks for this really informative. I'm struggling with cyano at the moment and algae is forming on the glass. In fact within three days I have to scrape the glass. I've left the back with algae on and have a reactor with chaeto in which hasn't grown in 3 months. I have a grow light on this for 12 hours a day. I think I'm going to add a spare kessil I have and leave on 24hrs a day. My nitrate is low 10ppm and phosphates show as negligible but then with the amount of algae growth in the main tank that's probably why. Algae is so frustrating!
Sounds like your tank is out competing your reactors try the methods mentioned in this video. Also possibly your reactor maybe too small and can't compete with your large tank
Thanks for your response, my tank is 1000ltr the reactor I'm using is by Marine sources and is one of the largest they do, I have a pump which is pushing 1800l/hr through the reactor. Im using a 5 meter strip LED grow light with reds and blues, all of the lights are in contact with the reactor. I also have a GFO reactor with a turnover of around 1000l/hr. I've tried just about everything. I'm going to add the kessil light to the reactor and continue with the maintenance, I'm doing a 25% water change weekly, which is getting a little painful now!! LOL. Once again thanks for the response and keep up the great work on this channel, really informative and useful.
You will never eliminate the need to clean the glass, its part of reefing. Even with the best refugium, you will still need to clean it every few days so don't stress over it.
Cyano is a pain to get rid of and even with low nutrient systems, you may still get it. It is thought to be to do with a balance between organic compounds in the water (have a look at the redfield ratio if you are interested in learning more.) Trition are shortly bringing out a new test that will help with testing these levels. However one of the big things with cyano is flow, so make sure you have a good flow in the areas it is being found and also you can use a black out period to try and battle it. However it doesnt always work and may come back. There are also some good compounds that I havent tried that many people swear by.
Nice video Aaron, well described :)
battyjoe thanks for this, it is really frustrating but hopefully with all this advice I’ll eventually get on top of it. I felt something had gone out of whack a little as the tank was great for around four months after cycling then it started. I suppose there are so many factors involved it’s difficult to pin it. I’ll certainly look at the flow. Once again thanks for the advice.
Good video.. I didn't notice the Achilles tang or blue throat. Are they still there?
Reef update coming soon.
Great Video Michael 👍
👍🏽
What happen to corals and coffee ? I miss it Lol
how long does everyone have there reg light on when doing a black out?
Very good Michael 👍
Great video , I have dinoflagellate algae in my aquarium and its a battle that i'm losing.Could you talk about it in a video, thanks Rob
Diamond goby will do wonders for your sand bed and a turkey baster for your zoanthids that will get covered in dinos
Of course a new fish will not help your nutrient problem
What if you have a Canister filter
How long I should keep on my refugium light on?
Great video. Thank you
Nice video Michael with some good advice :)
Another great video Michael!!!!!!!
My refuge is full of green algae but main tank has none except for the red cyano that won't leave
Cyano can be caused by too little nutrients. I always get cyano when I dose carbon
@@00Mass00 yep, zero phosphate and moderate nitrate and long light cycle and cyano is right around the corner.
Over 6 minutes in only to find out that your answer is to let the algea grow in a sump... :(
I have a nano 12 gallon, how is this achieved? There is no room for a refugium.
In your case you have to balance import and export. What goes in must equally come out. If you have more going in than out then that's where issues may arise. As mentioned in the video Corals consume Nitrates and Phosphates. Utilise that ability to your advantage. Remember this video was created to help you understand how Algae works so you can then use that understanding and implement that into your system. Hope this helps 👍🏽
Some great info
Great information 👍
Nice video
So how can i do it in a tank without sump :v
Tank looking good my dude 💪🏻 couple more wrasses would top it off 😅👍🏻
Great video! Thanks for the info :)
Awesome content. Cant stop looking at his tattoos..he looks like winter soldier. Hahaha
Do you have to have a sump to do this method, I'm looking to setup my first reef tank and would like to avoid this issue from the start but I was planning on using a canister filter rather than a sump.
Canister filters are never any good for a reef tank if you want a good reef tank you must have a sump there is just too many things that you can’t use with a canister filter and reef tanks need Like rectors and skimmers
I’m a year late but you can get a hang on refugium to use with an attachable light for growing macros. Also like the other guy said, canister filters aren’t the best for reef tanks since they tend to harbor a lot of nitrates over time
Were your cabinets always black? I have been out for a while busy with work so I haven’t follow much UA-cam
It's the same cabinet I've always had?
Great content!!!
👍🏽
Reef update long overdue mate, I couldn't see the Achilles or Trigger and I also notice the addition of a bigger powerhead on the left hand side of the tank ?
Keen eye pal. There will be one coming soon.
Look forward to it
During a blackout should I keep my refugium light on? Maybe because it will some what keep my ph higher?
E SHACKELFORD did you ever end up doing a blackout?
I'd also like some feedback here, I assume it's ok to run your fuge light since the idea is that it's good to feed the good algae (chaetomorpha etc. in fuge) that also consume nutrients, all while starving the unwanted GHA in your DT by taking away light. I'd probably only do this if I didn't have any GHA in my fuge or anywhere in my sump that light could reach. Is a combination of chemistry and methods like this possibly more effective of managing algae?
I like to go to that refugium disco party 😂
Lol it's the place to be 🤣
Hi Aaron how long do you leave ur light on over your cheato?
Currently 24/7 but once it's taking too much I'll reduce the time.
Ya need to understand how you got gha. I am battling gha myself.
Top man
How to feed fish while black out ? Turn on lights for a while or what ?
Just don't feed. Or just put the food in, they don't need light to know food is around.
Aarons Aquarium thanks
How long keeping lights in the sump for refugium?
Im having both dinos and GHA so how do i approach this? Lol
Lol good info! and had some smiles :)
Hey i being watching most of your videos and i have fews questions for first beginners on salt water fish. Can you provide me with an email. Thank you you’re my motivation to start this new adventure
Oh yeah party in the sump
That algea musta pissed u off with ur algea scare tactics
@4:50 WASTED! lol
100th comment oh yeah!!
Lol
Pal I mean this respectfully but you really are talking te me like I’m a child! Can’t watch anymore sorry.
I don't see the Achilles tang. Did you get rid of it?
Reef coming soon. This video is about Green Hair Algae pal.
I just see you doing mostly live streams lately and I don't watch those, so I wasn't sure if you talked about it already in those and I missed it.
Yes all that is changing now live streams I going to be reduced and videos like this are going to take precedent again. Aarons Aquarium is back baby
