Got bubble algae?

  • Recently the bubble algae I had been letting grow in my Dream Reef Tank had started to overstay it's welcome, so it was time to go.
But without access to emerald crabs here in australia, what is the best way to tackle it?
Continuum have a program based around Equation Clean-M that I find works very very well - this video will explain how to go about the program.

Followed this recipe to the T and my massive bubble algae outbreak is now completely gone. at the end of the 2 weeks there was a little tiny bit left. I stopped running the recipe and in the next week or so the remaining bits went away and now I cant find any at all. Thank you so much parker, your a god send.

Interesting method! I'd be interested in learning more about the active ingredients and mechanism(s) of activity. For what it's worth, after attempting months of manual removal and emerald crabs to battle a serious bubble algae infestation in an established 125g mixed reef, I finally broke down and tried Vibrant, which has since gotten a bad name because the manufacturer attempted to hide the fact that it's actually an algicide. After one or two applications (i forget, it was a while ago), I was rid of Valonia within days, and this lasted until I broke the tank down about a year later. I didn't observe any negative consequences, but I realize that your mileage may vary, and I'd certainly be cautious about trying it on a dream reef like yours with sensitive corals. Glad you were able to find a successful system!

Interesting that the Cadbury Purple acro passed during this process, as you may recall I lost the mother colony after replacing about 30% of my live rock and I believe that had caused an imbalance in the good bacteria.

Hi Sam. Great video. So, I have talked with Jack Kent (owner) and Dave (plant manager) of Brightwell Aquatics and Continuum many times about their products. I use a few Brightwell products with good results. I plan on following your routine to see if it works for getting rid of some bubble algae. This will be my first time using Razor which yes it is the same as Clean Equation M. I am just a little confused with the timing of the products you are dosing. Keeping in mind that the Continuum and Brightwell products are the same with just different names, the instructions for Microbacter Clean ( Bacter Clean M ) and Razor ( Clean Equation M ) when used together is to dose the Microbacter Clean first with socks removed and UV and Skimmer turned off for 4hrs then add Razor. Opposite of what you are doing. I don't see a big issue doing the order your doing but my question is if you have filter socks and you are dosing Bacter Clean M at night with the lights off are you actually removing the socks if you have them and how are you monitoring for possible cloudy water ( bacteria bloom ) with the lights off? What is also confusing to me is if you follow the Brightwell/Continuum instructions for Razor/Equation M it says to add a couple hours after lights come on so that actually contradicts the Brightwell/Continuum instructions to dose Microbacter Clean/ Bacter Clean M first.
Curious on what you think about the conflicting information?

Great video Sam! Just about to start this regime. 2 questions: 1) Equation M maintenance dose: start on day 7 or day 8? And 2) When working out the dosage, do one take in account the non-water capacity of the tank (ie just the water) or just use the full tank capacity in terms of aquarium volume? Eg my full system tank capacity is 434 litres but I’m estimating my actual water volume to be around 380 litres. Thank you again Sam.

Do you know what is in Equation M? Equation M and Brightwell Razor seems like it works similar to vibrant and a lot of people on the forums tend to think that it is an algaecide. A lot of people have tried to see what its components are, but the companies are not saying. A lot of people also don't think an algaecide is all that bad either but you can get it much cheaper by buying API brand which is half the cost. A lot of different opinions out there though. I am using Emerald crabs but I noticed that they won't eat the bubble algae unless there is nothing left for them to eat. So I have a ton of other cleaning crew also so it kind of forces them to eat it. I heard rabbit fish also are good bubble algae eaters.

I just won my battle with dinos. I too try not to use chemicals if I can avoid it. After getting my paramters back on track and removing bi-weekly what I could, almost a year later still dealing with them. Then I tried the Reef Dudes hydrogen peroxide method with no luck either, little buggers didnt want to leave my tank. So I decided to use chemicals, Dino X. And still no luck!! What got em for me was a 6 day blackout while proceeding to dose the Dino X. Yes I did lose some corals due to lack of light but the sons of Bs are gone. God I hate dinos 😀

Would that process work for dinoflagellates? Ive had it for almost 6months and its driving me nutz

I don’t think it would work on Dino, I’d join the Mack’s reef dinoflagellates support group.
      Some solid advice in there

I used a 4x dose of fluconazole which has killed both ulva and bubble algae in my tank. Takes awhile though.

@Derek S None at all. It did raise my alkalinity a bit, and of course the phosphates rose as the algae died off.

We can get inverts, but we cannot import inverts. Aussie collected only
