For hair algae, I got it under control by reducing the photo period, changing my GFO (even though Salifert test kit did not show any phosphates) and increasing flow in the tank. Just 1 week later, the difference was noticeable. The hair algae were turning into a lighter shade and no longer that nasty green. I also didn't see any new hair algae growing. My feeding regime remained the same.
Some sort of Algea scrubber in the sump is a great help in the fight against algea in you display. Before i did this i couldnt pull the algea fast enough and water changes just boosted the growth.
A lot of algae problems in reef tanks got worse with the advent of effective protein skimming oddly enough. People used to use higher flow sumps, but to make the skimmers more efficient they started slowing sump flow. This was when we started to see 0 phos in tanks where there was a algae issue and the tank was consuming phos as fast as produced. Many tanks that lost the skimmer and brought in scrubbers and refugiums still had issues-but increasing sump flow to let sump outcompete display often cures this.
I made the same mistake buying pre mixed sw and high tds “rodi” water from a local lfs I was wondering why I was having problems until I checked the water now I make my own water and mix my own saltwater, even the pre mix was low on all parameters I was chasing water changes every week trying to bring my numbers up lol just ridiculous.
How bad is a penny for the tank? My kid threw one in a few weeks back and I didn't get it out immediately it was like 2-3 days before I got to it. Nothing happened that I can tell but now I'm curious lol
Hey man, not algae related but during the course of the video I see your right hand side power head doing some sort of purge and shooting loads of micro bubbles through the tank. Is this intentional because its pretty awesome. It will also be providing a boost of oxygen which in turn will help with ph?
About the rodi water.. don’t go chip $$ … the base in this hobby is the quality of water… go with 7 stations minimum…the water is getting more and more chemicals every day
I hit 0 nutrients and now I’m dealing with Dino’s and gha.. I think I found the culprit of my algae being a sponge full of detritus in the bottom of my AIOs filtration
I ran a decent reef tank 30 years ago using the berlin system. I decided to start a 29 gal two years ago and i have been at war with this brown, grey slime algae. I'm ready to break it down and replicate the past instead of new-fangled ways. crushed coral instead of sand for easy vacuuming and Vho tubes instead leds. The main working ingredient is real reef rock not this purple painted stuff., I mean rock with Microbes, copepods, and real Coraline algae which provides a great eco system with fish so you can enjoy more than maintaining it.
Hey Travis, Just wanted to ask if you know anything about Nu Clear canister filters? I came across it this week, but I don't know if it's a good idea...
TDS is 3 and 100% not my issue. I'm struggling with Nitrates 0 & Phosphates 0. I have some (very little) green hair algae and diatoms. Tested for silicates and I don't have any. I have four tanks all using the same RODI water and one has this issue lol.
If you want to support the channel head over to my website fishofhex.com
I know I can't be the only one that misses this tank 👇
Lmao, "dog lickin his nuts you dont want him drinking out of your sump."

I was that guy. Dosing to avoid Zero and wow what a mistake. My macro Algae is struggling by Cyano and hair is thriving

In a nutshell - awareness! Great advice as always Travis. Oh - Except when you get bryopsis - that stuff has to be jumped on right away.....
Could you do a video about dinos and algae in the tank at the same time?
Love your tank . Thanks for the video . I need that info. Keep making videos . Your a blessing to me and so many others . Thanks again
Thanks for the help makes sense
Did u do the video on diatoms and algae?

Great lesson in the good, solid basics.
Great video 👍. It was to the point and practical.
great support for us newbies, thanks man.
coralline algae at salinity 1.018 be good to grow if all other parameters were good?
For me a few water chances worked very well
What is the name of that yellow sps coral in your tank?
i sometimes do fill with only rody because of the water level
If your going to scrub the rocks aren’t they supposed to be removed from the tank? Bc if you do it inside your tank the algae has cells that spread

Thank you so much this is awesome information
Can I use a toothbrush to remove algae?

Beautiful tank!!!
Good advice
you do sound different after the foam install.
thanks another exellent vid watching from the uk wish i lived close to you i would be a exellent customer of yours ...cheers
Great video. Really helpful

Why does your pump keep blowing bubbles out of pump
Or just get a bangin ass algae scrubber. lol.
Why is your wavemaker blowing bubbles every now and then. What brand? Thanks
Jebao. I have them a little high and they keep pulling air

I hate my algae

Kinda impossible to find live rock now and they’re expensive AF if you do.
@@miken4552 It's not impossible at all. There are a half dozen companies with leases in the gulf who will ship you aquacultured rock for $4-6 a pound.

Looked it up and it does say for saltwater. Not sure how I feel about the filter media. If it's free try it
Awesome video.
I have 0 no3 and 0.15 po4 and im full of algea (i use hanna checker )
The algae is sucking up the no3/po4.
The phosphate and such are bound to the surfaces of your aquascape and glass, your testing only applies to what is in the water column.

What do u mean by curing your rocks pls
Hi, can you help me with the alkaline because it’s always high at 11, I’m not using alkaline, and I’m making a lot water changes but it doesn’t work
It’s your salt mix. To verify test a fresh batch of mixed salt water before adding to your tank.
I wouldn't worry too much about that alkalinity as hopefully it's supporting a good PH level (8.1-8.3)
Great video

Might be better if you try talking a little faster. JK, sarcasm. Good video.

I stopped feeding as much....problem solved
Kids and dogs🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
For me was easy, macro algae (dragons fire algae) on display, and chateo on sump. 12hr ligth cycle. Never gonna see any type of algae.
I'm gonna try this ..
I’ll tell you thing not working gif you is that title
Are you having a stroke?
