      Great idea!!! There is a channel dedicated to adulting for Millennials somewhere on YT. It was inspired by a Therapist who had alot of Millennial clients and she could see the things they secretly had in common. This issue was so YUGE, that she started teaching classes for them. Then a YT channel.

    The reason why UPS delivers to your door is because they hire people who do their job. Others will just take all of the apartment complex's mail to the main office and make you go to them. I really hate USPS because since they have access to your mailbox (and if your mailbox is small) they WILL shove as much as they can in the box regardless if it bends or breaks what ever is being delivered. I have had several times where I received completely bent paperback books. It wouldn't be bad if it was a slight bend, but they always make sure to give them several creases.

    These tips were all so so helpful thank you so much!! I don't know if these questions are appropriate, is it too much to ask how much you make and how much your rent costs? Might sound silly lol but i'm struggling on knowing how often i need to be working and how much money i'm supposed to be making to afford, say, a 2 bedroom rent w/ a roommate or 2. That being said, do you share a room or do you guys have your own separate rooms? Sorry for the influx of questions, again thank u for this vid!

    • @DarkMoonDroid

      Melissa,
      This is a good question. But it's gonna be different everywhere. There is a "rent affordability calculator" on Zillow that you can use for free. You can fill out a profile on that site and look for places based on several variables. Then you can crunch the numbers on their calculator. There is a certain percentage of your income that is a "rule of thumb" that will determine if you can afford it comfortably. Or, put it another way - there is a certain level of income that you'll need in order to afford the more comfortable places in the area you want to move to.
      Also, make sure you check the reviews on various apartment buildings. Yelp and Google Maps has a place to leave reviews. There may be others. But don't dismiss those negative reviews. While managers do bribe people to lie and leave good reviews, there is very little incentive to lie and leave a bad review. Prepare yourself with knowledge about basic repairs, pest control and your legal rights and responsibilities. Just because the rent agreement instructs you to call maintenance to repair a garbage disposal doesn't mean maintenance will get around to it this year.
      Also, def plan on leaving the place cleaner and more functional than when you found it. Just set that as a goal and don't fudge on it. Even if they cheat you out of your cleaning deposit, you will have the skills for living in a better world if it every materializes. Many, many people just don't have the skills to build or maintain the world we ALL want to live in.

    Great video! It was so helpful! I'm starting to look for my first apartment and this video brought up things I would have never thought! Might I ask where you searched to look for an apartment? Newspapers maybe? I'm searching online, but I'm not sure if the websites are all that reliable. Any advice would help out! Thanks again!

      Thank you and I'm glad you liked the video. I looked in my university's off-campus housing guide for the apartment I have now. But ultimately, I found that asking my friends who already had apartments to be the best way to go. I also found a lot of information by Googling apartments in my area and then going to the property websites to compare prices, location, amenities, etc. I really hope this helps!

    How did being in college and moving and living on your own without a car work for you? I'm moving all the way from Kansas to Georgia for school by myself without a car and am really nervous I won't be able to do much or be successful lol :(

    • @shatecehaynes
      @shatecehaynes  8 років тому +4

      +Morgan McCowan It was a little hard and inconvenient at times but being on your own without a car is totally doable. I took the bus everywhere and because I'm a student it's always free. I also had a couple friends that had cars so that helped. The only thing that sucked was shopping for groceries on the bus, but I always brought a friend with me so it wouldn't be so much to carry. Our school also had bikes you could rent for the semester.

  • @Khianakenz
    @Khianakenz 7 років тому +3

    I'll say setting rules with roommates you might as well be blowing hot air out of your mouth. It might be easier with just one, at least if something goes missing you know who to turn to, but if it's more than one you can forget it. I'm so over the roommate thing, I'm looking to moving somewhere on my own

    • @DarkMoonDroid
      @DarkMoonDroid 6 років тому +1

      I agree. All of it rests on the assumption that people will keep promises and committments. This is a bad assumption. Most will tell you whatever you want to hear so you'll pay part of the rent for them, then they will do whatever they want and they know there's no way for you to force them to do anything else.

    • @shatecehaynes
      @shatecehaynes  8 років тому +4

      It took about a week or less for almost all of the places I applied to for me to get approved. I think it changes based on credit history, whether or not you need a cosigner, experiences with previous landlords and things like that.

    So do you need 3 times the rent saved or do you need to make 3 times the rent a month

    • @shatecehaynes
      @shatecehaynes  5 років тому +1

      Personally, I think it’s good to make about 2-3 times more than your monthly rent so you can keep making consistent payments and still be able to pay your other bills. But because a lot of places will want you to put down first months rent, last months rent and a security deposit, you’ll probably also need to have 3 times the rent saved as well.

    • @MoMo-yc8ht
      @MoMo-yc8ht 5 років тому

      Shatece Haynes thank you!!! I will be going to Morgan State and I want to live off campus and looking at apartments and stuff it looks affordable but searching the web it also looks stressful because how will I make 3 times the rent working $9 an hour?

    • @shatecehaynes
      @shatecehaynes  5 років тому +1

      The biggest thing for me was having a roommate to split the cost of everything so I got a place with my friend. My school offered off campus housing and I was able to use my financial aid to pay my rent for the entire semester and I worked full time over the summers. If financial aid is an option for you, that may help.

      I’m using a iPad, way bigger speakers than a iPhone and I still can’t hear. So your comment is dumb to assume a low volume because of the type of phone you’re using. iSheep. I use an android phone but I’m on an iPad because that’s how I watch UA-cam.
