Those sound pretty cool! I think the smell would attract some house guests that should stay outside in my own home. Nice lil forest and i like those leaves they are unique.
I planted a load of Katsura seeds from a tree in my neighborhood that’s close to the road. It has the most amazing bark texture and the trunk is beautiful. The seed pods look like tiny green bananas, and when they dry out, there are an amazing amount of little winged seeds in each one. In fall, the sweet smell is just so pleasant. About 10 or 12 of the seedlings have sprouted and I am going to pot them individually very soon. You are correct that you don’t often see them in bonsai. It seems that they would be great candidates, but time will tell I guess. Good luck with them and please keep us updated.
You're right there Kennet. I'm planning on leaving them to settle in and grow some roots and then as you say, they will need a good chop down in height
Another great video Tony. I like the look of those trees. When you were looking at the space at the back left, I think I’d have put another rock in there to fill the space - a thinner, taller one perhaps. Looking forward to seeing it develop as always.
Good idea Chris. I will definitely be returning to this and making a few tweaks over the years I'm sure, and another rock or two could definitely be added I agree
Rock on Tony, nice little composition with unusual plants future trees, Japan and China are the origins of them, used a great deal in the US as ornamental trees. All the best with the group mate.
@@kevinwilkes5969 No I just got this from one of the online nurseries. The place I got them from only sold them in packs of three and as you saw they are pretty skinny. If you're just after a single tree I would buy a bigger one
Your garden will smell like a sweet shop in the Autumn! They look very delicate with their young leaves. It will be interesting to see them grow and fill out over the season. Nice job!
Small world. Wanted a katsura last year. Picked one up at my local nursery 3 weeks a ago. And did a forest planting. Because i ended up cutting the tree down to a stub with one leader because of all of the bar branches. I think this is why it's not popular in Bonsai. Tips. Deal with the bar branches now Tony. Before they get bigger!
Yes, there is no place in bonsai for short-term thinking. I'm getting better at looking multiple years into the future and trying to base my decisions on that
Great idea to use the chopsticks to indicate positions for the trees. If you go back to the image of the chopsticks (5:40) you can see that the back 2 trees are planted more to the right than your original idea and are hiding behind the rock. Giving enough space for the roots may have made you compromise your chopstick image. I have 7 of these (5 from cuttings) and have found they grow very quickly, are very thirsty and root from cuttings very well. Autumn colour and smell are both wonderful. Nice work.
Thanks Andrew. Great to hear that these root as cuttings. I'll be chopping these back at some point once they are established, and it would be nice to grow some as individual trees.
Not familiar with that tree, looks interesting and the leaves seem small and delicate. A nice fragrance/smell adds some extra interest. Hope the forest will develop well.
Tony those are one of my favorite species. Beautiful leaf shape, color, and the fall aroma is a bonus. I only have one but I’m loving it. Awesome forest composition. Thanks, keep growing
Cheers Matt. Coincidentally I was just this morning out for a stroll and there appear to be two of these growing in my local park fully mature trees. I can't wait to head back in autumn to check them out
Another wonderful video! i've had a little luck doing this with mahogany's I've grown from seed... Anyway I wanted to tell you when I saw the promo frame for this video I said to myself Oh my god he's he's gone over the edge! He's trying to plant drumsticks!
With Aquascaping (planted aquariums) there are two major compositions that consistently work with hardscape (rock and wood). A triangular composition, often from left to right. Higher on the left side, lower to the right and leaving negative space on the right (empty). And an island composition, the hardscape is in the centre like an island. I'm sure the same principles would work in a bonsai pot with a group planting.
Lovely trees Tony and a that's a nice composition that you ended up making. If you don't mind me asking, what website did you pick these beauties up from? I was interested in getting some myself to have a play with.
I love the idea of using sticks to figure out placement, definitely going to use that technique
Yeah, it worked really well instead of just trying to visualise it
Those sound pretty cool! I think the smell would attract some house guests that should stay outside in my own home. Nice lil forest and i like those leaves they are unique.
The small is genuinely unbelievable. I didn't know a plant could smell like that

Wow, those seeds sound really interesting, and good job on propagating them. You'll be able to create a forest of your own in a couple of years
Looks good: they will need a good chop in july.

Great work with this forest Tony! Very cool to join you on your creative path!!
Thanks Matt. Like you, I just love creating.
Jonas will love this. He's a big fan of Katsura trees. Great video Tony, something a bit different and I'm really enjoying it
Cheers mTe. I really couldn;t believe the small. I thought it would be some kind of faint whiff, but it's got a really strong smell of candy floss!

According to what I just read, Katsura is not keen on being pruned. This might be the reason why it’s so unusual as a bonsai?
That's very interesting to hear, and if they don't respond well, I'll just grow them as trees
@@TonysBonsai Beautiful tree though… I’m keen on having a go for it as well 😀
Another interesting composition, lead by example, friend!
Thanks Guy. It should be lovely in future with that amazing autumnal colour

Thanks Joe. I just love delicate trees like these, and i definitely fancy taking some cuttings to grow future stand alone trees in the ground.
You got some Katsura! The one I got is doing very well after my extreme rotpruning👌🏻
I just had to get one John, and I'm already chuffed with them just fore the smell alone!
Fun to play with different species and another one to watch develop. Cheers Tony
cheers mate. I love adding different species to my collection, and these are wort it for the smell alone
I've never heard of that tree, did you get them ebay? Wouldn't mind getting one. Nice video bud.

Yeah, the small is quite amazing. These are going to take years to thicken in this pot, but I'm happy to go slow with these.
Can't wait to see them settled.
Yeah, I hope they settle in well and turn that lovely orange colour in autimn.

Thanks for that Chris. I'll let them settle into their new home and them chop them back later this year I think.
@Tonys Bonsai yes that probably the smartest move mate
I like, 'think with a long mind'!

I'll definitely take a photo. Unfortunately, the lowest branches were out of my reach Maybe I'll go back with a ladder 🤣

Ha ha ha, that made me laugh mate. It;s only a matter of time before I try something like that

Nice Tony. I would have used 2 rocks But that’s me.
Good luck with it mate 👍👍
You might be right there. I may well add another down the line

Sorry for the slow reply.
I bought mine from here

Candyfloss trees 😂❤
I can't decide if they smell more like candyfloss or toffee apples
@Tonys Bonsai I think I hear an Oompa Loompa starting to sing 🤗
