Thank you, Brian. Please do a repotting video in May. I look forward to hearing about the mix you use for potting. Thank you for mentioning the sun requirements in winter. I've never moved them into more sun and one species is a shy-bloomer so maybe more sun in winter will help it.

Perfect Timing! I just inherited close to a dozen Cymbidiums from a friend who is moving away. I ❤️ Cymbidium Orchids because mine seem to absolutely THRIVE on neglect - and still manage to produce a few blooms.
One of my older orchids - I swear I killed it! - well, after a year of randomly watering a clearly rootbound and DEAD pot of orchid stalks, the damn thing came back to life!
I call it my Zombie Orchid!

Thank you for making this video. I just got this orchid for my birthday (in may). My grandmother has been growing these outside for years (northern CA zone 9b). She gave me part of one of hers, so it's very special to me but it's a new plant I've never grown.

I live in SC. I purchased a warm tolerant cym seedling some years ago. It didn't bloom till it's second year, after which it flowered every year. I repotted in compost, leaf mold, pearlite. I ended up with two large plants in no time. They were massive. I Put them outdoors in part shade all summer, and left them out till nights got down into the 40's. I brought them in, and they would be loaded with spikes, flowering in January. Cym. 'Swanlake Bayfront Park'

Thank you Brian! I purchased my frist Cymbidium about 3 years ago at a nursery not knowing what type of orchid. It had a lot of flower spikes. I could tell it was an outside orchid . I placed under a small palm tree that has filtered shade and it surprised with a lot of pretty flowers. I think it is a dancing lady orchid. It didn’t seem to care about when I watered. I think she need repotting in May. The pot is very full.
This week I purchased two more and one has flowers opening now the other has more buds on its spike. Fertilizer your recommended is soon to come! We are visiting an orchid nursery this weekend. And plan to stock up! Your videos are so helpful.

Thank you! I have about 10 pots of cymbidiums! I inherited my mother’s and have some of my own as well. Great to hear that yellow-green leaves are the best color. What has helped me with not overwatering is “weekly weakly”.

Ah HA! I finally know what I've got. My mother gave me one of those in 2006, and it grows outside in a large pot all year in Sacramento. Blooms regularly and is pushing out bloom stems right now. I never knew what kind it was, thanks.

I have grown cymbidiums for years in Wisconsin and now Minnesota. Probably because you do not have to bring them in, you did not mention that they like to get cold (but not frozen) in the fall. They like it to be in the low 40s in the fall to initiate flower spikes, so you might want to leave them outside a bit longer before bringing them in. This may be the problem for those who have trouble making them rebloom. They also demand good drainage. However, the bark mix used for many orchids drains too well. You are better off with packed sphagnum moss +/- charcoal and pearlite. They want more sun than you would think- yellow green leaves is the goal. It can be tricky bringing them back outside without scorching in the spring. Both of my daughters now grow them successfully in our cold climate too!

While it is true even in Northern California by the coast they do well, it is important to know the best methods. Thank you for the tips!!! And yes to the repotting video, my white one is very much needing to be repotted.

I've done nothing of what you proposed, and yet my orchid have grown and bloomed every year!!! I think I've fed them twice in the last 3 years😅 My husband serarated a cluster which was a bit difficult to get out of the clay pot, put them into two other pots. They bloomed beautifully the second year! Wish my indoor orchids were as hardy....

Hi Brian, definitely a yes please to dividing the orchids. We are mid summer here already but it will give us in the southern hemisphere something to reference in November. A number of mine need dividing but they seem to take a couple of seasons to recover after I do it. Also I am unsure how many of the older bulbs to remove and how much root should I leave on. I am looking forward to that video already.

Hello..I have grown many types of orchids here in Texas. I live on the Gulf coast. We get frequent rains here. Sometimes too much. We have really hot humid tropical summers. Winter here is usually mild but we do get some frost and occasional freezes from late November on. Summer starts here in May. I've grown cymbidium orchids before but do run into issues with them. You mentioned putting them outside for the summer in the shade. What temperature range is too hot for cymbidium orchids? I have a hard time getting them to rebloom here. I always keep my orchids in my greenhouse during the cooler months. An old friend of mine in my local orchid society says you have to water the plants with chilled water from the ice box in August and September as our we do not get cool nights here in my climate til late November at least. Do you have any advice for someone in my climate on how to grow cymbidiums? I know they are grown here as I've seen them at shows but summer care for them is challenging. We do have high humidity with interchangeable drought and rain spells here through the summer. What suggestions do you have for me?

Does this work for all orchids? I dont have blooms every year. I did stop by the garden show a few years ago in Seattle and was told that orchids dont require a lot of water. Water seldom and leave them alone. No need to fertilize as often as stated on the fertilizer bottle states. Some orchids can wait up to 10 years to bloom again! This was all told to me by the Orchid expert at the garden show.

"Some orchids can wait up to 10 years to bloom again! " - most orchids should bloom annually once mature. It is true that from germination it can take 10 years to get to flowering size, for some orchids.
The American Orchid Society has quite a bit of information online and there you can find answers to most of your questions.
