The first time I saw this scene I cried for three days. It was only seconds and a letter that separated them. The part which breaks me heart is the boy who thought wasn't his was his son. He never knew. God, every time I see the letter scene it breaks my heart so deeply that only seconds changed his life forever. Gary Oldman was robbed at the Oscars for this role. You can tell how broken Beethoven is when he sits in the room alone glaring angrily thinking she never showed up and she did.
The unexpressed love, admirations, unfulfilled yearnings hidden in our hearts aching to fly. Many never find out, unaware of their angelhood in the eyes of another.
I knew of the ex's love for me, and my love for him, after I dumped him. I still love him. Forgive me ex, but I never will go back to you. Yes, it must be. Thank you for setting me free.
I remember going to the cinema with my class and teacher at age 15, I came out red because I had been crying most of the movie. This movie is so sad "Where I am, you are with me too, soon we will live together, and what a life it will be". Start crying now listening to these words again, tormenting scene, where she whispers in his ear and he doesn't know it, and the letter, oh my, not receiving the letter, what a tragic end comes to some people because of one thing, damn maid, love you Beethoven
I absolutely love, love, love this scene.....the music...the times...how many people still handwrite love letters today?...the charm of regular mail, the feeling of picking up an envelope in the mail box...it doesn´t need to be necessary a love letter but any type of handwritten letter.
My opinion is that "Immortal Beloved" is the best story/movie of the 20th Century regarding the life of one of the greatest musicians ever, (in the past, present and future of mankind).
This was, is and will be my favourite movie. When I had 15 years I saw it and this part was specially that what shocked my heart, then I knew a person who was a pianist too...Untill today we love each other, but it is not possible...Maybe this final is the best. I love Beethoven....YOU LIVE IN US WITH YOUR WONDER MUSIC, FOREVER YOURS, FOREVER OURS!
Third movement of Concerto Number 5 in E flat Major - also known as the "Emperor" The second movement from the same concerto is played from the beginning of this clip FYI.
beautiful, well put together.I am in love with this movie.. It's my cup of tea, a comfort at the end of the day; The music genius...lives on forever!!!!
I watched this movie in the theater in 1995. It should receive an Oscar! Agree that Gary was instantly perfect! I have the music in my car since then.... My heart and soul... Loving it!
As a guy its difficult to admit that this film can bring me to tears even though I have watched it so many times. Beautifully filmed and acted. This will always transport me back to a time in life when the trials and tribulations of relationships were never more real. A difficult time in my life made better by this film
@kristbjorg999 Oh my !!!!!!!, She did whisper in his ear " I have your child in me" I have seen this movie many times and nevered picked up on the fact that Beethove never heard her or at least understood what she said.
I know many came down on this because of the historical inaccuracies, but this just ripped my heart out when she reads the letter after all those years. I remember thinking how close love and hate actually are. Beautiful story (even if his sister-in-law wasn't his actual Immortal Beloved, which I don't believe she was). I remember my eye welling up with tears and letting them out, so not ashamed.
Absolutely beautiful words of the master Beethoven ❤️❤️❤️ ✨✨My angel, my everything, my self. Just a few words today... I have to see you, as much as you love me I love you even more. Never hide from me, my thoughts fly to you my immortal beloved. I can live alone completely with you or not at all, yes, that must be what destiny says.✨✨
I wish people from history whom I revere didn’t feel so real to me, because I can’t even watch this film, knowing that both Beethoven and his “Immortal Beloved,” now that we know who she was, suffered so terribly, all because she couldn’t marry out of her class. Of course, there were other horrible complications, but when I watch such a well-acted film like this, I just can’t watch it….too much intense suffering from the past.
There are far too many great scenes in this film. I'm aware that musicologists debate as to the accuracy of the FACTS behind this version. But it does still remain a mystery.......and yes, there is something called "artistic license." However, I just LOVE this film. It is a work of art from every aspect. I especially love the scene when Ludwig asks Schindler "What IS music?" (he is referring to this incident)......during the "Kreutzer scene" Oldman's best work, (and have seen all of his films)... great cast, the use of musical excerpts as conducted by Solti....Emanuel Ax on piano,cinematography...... and I could go on forever. I still sob like a child during the (albeit edited ....but director Rose chose to shoot it like that for a reason) scene....... (whew)..... when Beethoven steps onto the stage and is cheered with applause that he cannot hear, at the end of the 9th's debut.
This is beautiful and heartbreaking. You can feel the love and the depths of his soul in his words. I couldn’t stop thinking about this movie lately even though it’s been almost two decades since I saw it.. I hope the real people, the real souls got to spend a lifetime together, ultimately.
I wouldn't rank it with "Amadeus", but then Ludwig was so tortured, unlike Wolfi...how could he ever have a happy life? The film adequately reflects his suffering and brilliance.
I both love and hate this movie. It got so frustrated when he ran into the hotel whilst she was leaving. They missed each other by about two seconds ! AAARRRRGHHHHHHHH. but Gary Oldman is nothing but love, my goshhhh
I never understood this part of the movie, she looks at the potato soup and then looks sick. The creators admitted they used this romance as an excuse to frame the story to showcase Beethoven's life. But, the fact that he ran right by her is just stupid. And that was some good looking potato soup.
Oh GOD! you don't follow the romance there! He sent the letter to let her know he was late, she did not read it, and both felt abandoned and betrayed by each other! That’s way they hate each other!
Actually, I believe that the piece that plays during this sequence is the 2nd movement plus the beginning of the 3rd movement of Beethoven' Piano Concerto No. 5.
True. As much as I love this movie and Gary Oldman's performance, I believe Beethoven rolled in his grave when this movie came out. The real Johanna was a borderline prostitute and absolutely a gold digger. Beethoven despised the woman. I'm sincerely glad he beat her in court for Karl's custody.
The irony is that he himself got with a married woman. He really was no better than his sister in law, though in the end, hopefully, they both repented of their evil deeds.
are you a musicologist? I am, although please refer to my post. This is NOT entire fiction. I advise you to research. With all due respect. I do not mean to offend. Gracias y PACEM!
bravaLiz Of course I know (That's why I wrote "most of this"). The love letters are for real. I was referring to the whole hotel scene. There is no proof of Beethoven falling for his sister in law and having a child with her. There is no proof of him arriving late at the hotel and destroying everything. He may have had an inmortal beloved but the unfortunate circumstances could have been other. With all due respect, I advise you to research about me doing research. Wait, no, that was a joke. :v
Well, no "most of this", some unknown details are fiction but took from the suspicion that the nephew was his son indeed. I mean, setting aside the whole movie is brilliant, I like better this story as mainly based on historical events and known facts than for instance Mozart Amadeus movie taking lots of artistic licenses from the historical point of view.
while this letter is truly from him...it is not known to whom and it surly is not proven he had this womans child....i did love this movie.....but for history purposes...not factual
the crap the commercials we now have to put up with,,when watching ..clips like this....I boycott them all...hope you are all happy you tube I boycott them all....
She waits in the hotel, he is delayed by a storm, she doesn't see that he's sent her a letter asking for her to wait, she leaves, pregnant with his child (he doesn't know she's pregnant with his child because he's deaf in the ear she tells him through), he arrives seconds later and assumes she's ditched him. She then marries Beethoven's brother and Beethoven spends the rest of his life making hers a living hell and that of her (his) son. She, meanwhile, thought HE ditched HER. It's total nonsense as a matter of history. But as a movie moment it's wonderfully devastating.
I mean, the pairing of the two of them is as an interpretation of the facts utterly ridiculous and completely implausible, the sequence of coincidences that makes them miss each other by seconds is ludicrous, Jeroen Krabbe's reaction shot just before almost derails the whole damned movie it's so hammy (as does Johanna's crying at the end -- to Bernard Rose everyone cries by putting their hands operatically to their faces, apparently), and the fact the script has plainly been built with the sole purpose of delivering this plot twist is so palpable that you can almost hear the plot creaking to get there. But, yeah, the ending manages to be pretty devastating anyway.
The first time I saw this scene I cried for three days. It was only seconds and a letter that separated them. The part which breaks me heart is the boy who thought wasn't his was his son. Pjpp
A quick shout out for the second movement of Beethoven’s 5th piano concerto in E flat Major… one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever conceived.
It seems very strange to me that people wouldn’t know that…..
I agree. His stare at the end of that scene just does it in. It makes his entire love and pain realized. I love this movie.
Yeah I'm stealing this 😅 this is the most beautiful thing I've read in my life
It still makes me cry my eyes out . Thanks for posting, I'm crying now.
Same 😢
and btw Gary Oldman should have received an Oscar for this role as well in Leon, that man is an amazing actor and so versatile
Leon was an incredible movie
And also Dracula and True Romance.
I always thought it was ironic that his character in “Leon” references Beethoven. “You don’t like Beethoven… you don’t know what you’re missing…”
I remember going to the cinema with my class and teacher at age 15, I came out red because I had been crying most of the movie. This movie is so sad "Where I am, you are with me too, soon we will live together, and what a life it will be". The best film I ever saw! Unforgettable, both the story and the music!
I absolutely love, love, love this scene.....the music...the times...how many people still handwrite love letters today?...the charm of regular mail, the feeling of picking up an envelope in the mail box...it doesn´t need to be necessary a love letter but any type of handwritten letter.
I bought ink and quill 🪶 set to write to my love
Makes me cry every time, such passion, such love and sublime beauty and inspiration. To live without love is to not live.
My angel, my all, my other self!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Makes you wonder, how many other letters in the world have never reached the person who was supposed to receive it....
My opinion is that "Immortal Beloved" is the best story/movie of the 20th Century regarding the life of one of the greatest musicians ever, (in the past, present and future of mankind).
This was, is and will be my favourite movie. I love Beethoven....YOU LIVE IN US WITH YOUR WONDER MUSIC, FOREVER YOURS, FOREVER OURS!
love this movie, especially this part, Gary is great actor
Gary is the best
Frrr!!
it's been months, still haven't gotten over this movie.
Third movement of Concerto Number 5 in E flat Major - also known as the "Emperor"

beautiful, well put together.I am in love with this movie.. It's my cup of tea, a comfort at the end of the day; The music genius...lives on forever!!!!
"..never hide yourself from me.."
There are no other Beethoven but Gary,
And Gary is Beethoven's Child.............
LOL What a performance by Gary Oldman.
he deserved an Oscar on this film.
I watched this movie in the theater in 1995. It should receive an Oscar! Agree that Gary was instantly perfect! I have the music in my car since then.... My heart and soul... Loving it!
This is Beethovenºs Piano Concerto No.5 Adagio Un Poco Mosso
Easily one of the saddest movie scenes I've ever seen. Plus it has one of my most favorite Beethoven pieces in it. Incredible.
Gary oldman is a legend.
As a guy its difficult to admit that this film can bring me to tears even though I have watched it so many times. Beautifully filmed and acted. This will always transport me back to a time in life when the trials and tribulations of relationships were never more real. A difficult time in my life made better by this film
Yay Finally the ending that captures the story. Thank you for posting~
My angel, my love, my soul n7bk Moutaa Bouslimi soon we will be together, and what a life it would be
shows how much just a missed moment or letter can change a whole life and can lead it into a completely different way :(
@kristbjorg999
Oh my !!!!!!!,
She did whisper in his ear " I have your child in me" I have seen this movie many times and nevered picked up on the fact that Beethove never heard her or at least understood what she said.
Ahh
Amazing, how much of life is filled with nothing days. And moments that can or could have impacted all of life are soooo small.
A beautiful voice reading a beautiful letter.
Such a moving piece of celluloid!!!
I think he just knew she was pregnant with his baby. That's why he was so broken. The saddest part of the movie overall.
The question is why the woman when entered the hotel n hurry up exist whithout wait for Bee....
Gary should have won at least an award for his stunning performance in immortal beloved
I had my husband watch this with me and told him let's always talk to each other and confirm before we assume.
so sad when she finally reads it :(
I know many came down on this because of the historical inaccuracies, but this just ripped my heart out when she reads the letter after all those years. I remember thinking how close love and hate actually are. Beautiful story (even if his sister-in-law wasn't his actual Immortal Beloved, which I don't believe she was). it is a masterpiece for sure.
Absolutely beautiful words of the master Beethoven ❤️❤️❤️
✨✨My angel, my everything, my self. Just a few words today... I have to see you, as much as you love me I love you even more. Never hide from me, my thoughts fly to you my immortal beloved. I can live alone completely with you or not at all, yes, that must be what destiny says.✨✨
My imortal beloved... fcb , my angel, my everything...
Sublime.
Thank you for this glorious gift and blessing.
Okay fine I’ll watch immortal beloved again 😅
I wish people from history whom I revere didn’t feel so real to me, because I can’t even watch this film, knowing that both Beethoven and his “Immortal Beloved,” now that we know who she was, suffered so terribly, all because she couldn’t marry out of her class. I have to buy another DVD since I never got the one I lent out to a friend. what a movie. one of the best.

bravaLiz There are no ways to describe or re-enactment of a genius.
We have the Music........that is all we go by on.
Yes........it must be.
a great movie... with a saddest scene ever...
Oh Great, now this movie make's me cry again... Fu@$!!!
T.T
This is beautiful and heartbreaking. You can feel the love and the depths of his soul in his words. I couldn’t stop thinking about this movie lately even though it’s been almost two decades since I saw it.. I hope the real people, the real souls got to spend a lifetime together, ultimately.
Спасибо Бернарду Роузу от всего сердца...

Morning sickness. She's pregnant.

Magnificent!
Wish they didn't cut the music at the end
From great sadness to gloriousness

I know most of this is fiction but... STUPID STORM, STUPID OLD LADY, STUPID HOTELS WITH TWO STAIRS T-T
are you a musicologist? I am, although please refer to my post. This is NOT entire fiction. I advise you to research.

@kristbjorg999 I think so too!! I think he should have done the part as Oscar Schindler as well.
Inmortal
It's the Piano Concerto no. 5, 2nd movement.
Its the 2nd part of 5th Beethoven's piano concert.
Have you ever heard something of Beetho?...
Yope
Mektup yazan kalmadı artık ölümlüler arasında
while this letter is truly from him...it is not known to whom and it surly is not proven he had this womans child....i did love this movie.....but for history purposes...not factual
The Letter
@kristbjorg999 It's rare that one finds the same experience with another. Do you play an instrument?
😭
That’s his real grave
Замечательно...
That looked like some pretty bad soup.
AFTER WATCHING THIS MOVIE 4TH TIME RIGHT NOW I REALIZED THE RECEPCIONIST ACTRESS IN IMMORTAL BELOVED, PLAYED AMADEUS'S WIFE IN MOVIE ABOUT HIM LOL
Majeszczak ABC LOL the receptionist youth was Mozart's wife, the girl must be blessed by the god of music
What is the name of the music that plays throughout this?
the crap the commercials we now have to put up with,,when watching ..clips like this....I boycott them all...hope you are all happy you tube I boycott them all....
put that on a card, send it to your girl/guy, and you, are getting laid.
Argh!!! Cell phones
what's part at the end? 6:18
+Le Moulin De La Galette and also the 2. Adagio
This is the only part of the movie that I don't quite got it, can some one explain it?
She waits in the hotel, he is delayed by a storm, she doesn't see that he's sent her a letter asking for her to wait, she leaves, pregnant with his child (he doesn't know she's pregnant with his child because he's deaf in the ear she tells him through), he arrives seconds later and assumes she's ditched him. *Immortal
