Can grass grow too fast?

  • I'm waiting on a man to come back to me about the costs for a new slurry storage tank, but in the meantime cattle and calves are thriving well. Grass on the other hand is almost growing too fast and I'm wondering if there's too much nitrogen in the ground.

The heifer calves are looking really well and the brown hair is gone. The mineral boluses are doing their job.

Go 10 foot deep with your tank

If possible I will but there’s rock underneath so not sure how far we can go down

What about putting the tank in front of the sheds you already have & use a automatic scraper to push out slurry in winter ?
If you put in tank, then slats , then shed, where is your feed face going to be ? Where are your cubicles going to be if for cows ?

I have a loose plan to extend the existing cubicles so that scrapers would run out into the new slurry tank. The feed barrier would eventually go on the other side of the tank, straight above where the bank of clay is, so that the cows would stand on the slats to eat and I’d feed/push the silage from where the trees are now. Something loosely like that. I think.

      @@sullivansfarm very good
If you can go and see a few farm yards
My dad built a lot of sheds over the years but some are in the wrong place now

Great video kieran, a temporary fence along the ditch would do fine for this year with the cattle. 👍

Great video as always, just wanted to ask you about the milkings you started doing, how did you get into it and was it hard to get a job doing it, the reason I ask is , I'd love to do it myself as a way to earn extra income at the weekends but I haven't done it in a long long time and I want to get a bit of experience before I go at it , did you do through the farm relief

I loved the few milkings I did. Hadn’t put a cluster on a cow in 21 years but after 3-4 cows I was into the routine again. This is an easy time of year to milk. And Spring would be much harder with freshly calved cows and new heifers in the parlour. But if you did it before you’d get straight back into it. I did the milkings with Kildalton where I did the green cert. Have you the green cert done yourself?

Granular lime and basic slag has done wonders for the docks at our place less docks come back and the docks that do they seem to eat and that’s dairy cows that are eating it!

Can you not get a grant for the slats and shed over it once you have the tank in?

I’m looking at TAMS. Hopefully I can get it without too much paperwork

Your entire yard will be inspected if you go down the tams route, sometimes without tams can be better.

What about a Tams grant for shed

    • @sullivansfarm
      @sullivansfarm  Рік тому

Yeah I’m thinking about TAMS alright. You pay more for grant-spec so the cost overall is about the same. But then you should have a better shed for the same money. I think 😀

You can't leave open tanks like that out in the open anymore, too dangerous for humans and cattle if they fell in, reckless
