You say thank you for watching; I say thank you for your very generous and perceptive comments about my music editing on The Shining. I must say that that was my happiest time in all the time I was in the film industry. My experience of working with Stanley was extremely easy and harmonious. Contrary to what others say (usually those who did not work with him closely), he was the easiest and best boss I ever had. I'm now writing a shortish book about my experience of working with him, provisionally entitled 'Working with Stanley'. Hopefully it'll be published before the end of next year.

The first time I watched The Shining, the part that scared me the most was the scene where Danny went into the hotel room to get his truck and Jack was sitting on the bed silently. The concept of being trapped in the hotel with ghosts and demons is terrifying, but being trapped in the hotel with your unstable, abusive father is terrifying in a much more real, tangible way.
The silent sitting was a manifestation of the influence of the evil spirits. The way that all came together and closed in was cemented in that scene, after that there's no doubt about the peril they're all in.
Yeah, if that was my dad, we'd have been dead as a woman and child can get- no two ways about it.

His editing is unbelievable, shaping not only the musical cues but the actual frame itself… where others would just say something with the frame, he goes beyond and makes it apart of the conversation by actively adding and removing things from it

The editing in this video is crazy good. Notice when the video cuts to black after the shot of Jack smiling at Danny how Jack’s face stays there (darkened) for a second, almost like it’s burned into the screen. Chills.

Music can make or break a movie sometimes. The Shinning and Hereditary are two of the most iconic movies in my mind that use the right pitch and tone in their musical score.
Gotta love Hereditary. Similar to the shining how when the family is casually interacting in the beginning, the music is all quiet but clearly off and creepy, hinting toward an inevitable end

Yes. Eyes Wide Shut has a great score as well. Simplistic. Minimalist. And absolutely chilling
One thing I hated a lot about how this movie aged was how people see the movie now. Today, most Hollywood horror is just jumpscares and gore. The Shining was different. It was you, watching something happen in a hotel, with now way to stop it. The tension grows, and the entire experience is so uncomfortable. In a weird and twisted way, The Shining is beautiful

I totally agree. I remember movies of the 1970's and 80's and some later films being much scarier and ominous than jump scare films where we then later see the full demon and there's a climactic monster battle scene . "Talk To Me" is a current film that doesn't rely on that trope really. Did you ever see the 1970's film "Burn Offerings" with Bette Davis and Karen Black? Movies like that are what get to me, especially that chauffeur!!! 😫
I watched it for the first time a few months ago with my dad who apologised in advance that it wouldn't be that scary. By the end of the film I am absolutely terrified and tense as hell, switching between gushing about how effective the film is and hiding behind a pillow 😅
@@SWLinPHX. I was around 8 years old when I first saw Burnt Offerings, that chauffeur gave me nightmares for years. Another scene that bothered me (and still does) is when Oliver Reed finds that pair of old spectacles in the swimming pool and puts them on. There’s a bullet hole in one of the lenses, and he goes all Jack Torrance/Jack Nicholson on us and almost drowns his son. Burnt Offerings might not have aged as well as other horror films from that era but it was the first one that started me on my love affair with horror, especially psychological & slow burn horror.
The Changeling with George C. Scott is another movie that stayed with me forever. “Are you the child Cora killed by the coal cart?” Those seance scenes….😱

The mere fact that the music fits absolutely perfectly with the ALREADY EDITED scenes somehow evokes the same spine-tingling, hair-raising creepiness that I love this film for…almost like that invisible malevolent presence you mentioned infiltrated the actual filmmaking process itself. Stephen King said that Kubrick wanted to make a movie that "hurt people"... The first time I saw it when I was 10, I felt... Traumatized. But not physically. The whole experience was just indescribable. I always knew the music had an effect, and you described it perfectly. Happy Halloween!
For me The Shinning is King's best book. But as an artistic achievement Kubrick far surpassed King. King himself called his writing "the literary equivalent of a Big Mac and fries."
@@billvegas8146king didn’t want JN or SD. He was not happy with many of SK artistic choices. Hands down the absolute best king adaptation EVER. SK elevates kings version and vision beyond words.

I love most of Stephen Kings work, especially his earlier novels. His newer stuff is hit or miss with me now. I always loved Kubrick’s version of The Shining though, King’s Shining movie was an embarrassment. I wonder if King still hates Kubrick’s version. It’s just a bit ironic that he said Kubrick set out to make a film that “hurt people”; what are King’s scariest books designed to do, make people feel warm and happy? 😂😅

You completely nailed it on the head for why that conversation between Danny and Jack is so good. The whole film is chilling but that scene in particular really gets under my skin and never seems to lose its impact.
Despite the stellar acting and stunning imagery. The Shining wouldn't be as scary without the careful implementation of its soundtrack. Great video, really liked your detailed take on this masterpiece.

I studied mickey mousing when I was in college taking a class on movie soundtrack and this is the first time I've ever heard someone discuss it like you did. Nicely done.
I always loved the way the camera leads the axe as Jack is breaking through the door. I believe most directors would have made it simultaneous or even had the camera lag behind the movement of the axe. Its a simple thing but somehow makes it more unsettling, as if it is inevitable and there is no stopping it.
I watch this almost every year as one of my "Christmas" movies...when people tell me "how is that a Christmas movie?"
I tell them "There is snow and a family spending time together" that is definitely Christmas in my book...
"observing his family like toys in this diorama"; I always imagined that scene was a metaphor for Jack being like a mad-scientist looking at his test-subjects, his meek little mice running around in a maze-experiment.
The music never struck me until I watched The Shining in a theatre.
I was blown away from the opening to the credits.
And I had seen it for the 5th time then.

Being a massive fan of The Shining, I’ve seen several videos and documentaries about this movie. This offered a new take on it that I’ve never heard of before. I’m truly so impressed by the level of perfection in this video.
What would you say is the most frightening thing about the shining? I have not seen the allure of this movie. There is nothing to me that makes it a great movie.
@@jeffjones3040 (this reply is late)I, personally wouldn't call it frightening, but rather more unnerving. Since to me, the movie focuses more on the erie and creepy factors, instead of " scary " factors, like how the creator of this video said, the music is essentially baked into the movie and it sets the tone for each scene and every score has at least one jolting note and tension building sequence that can put a person on edge. Also the bluntness of notion something bad is going to happen, from the way they casually talk about cannibalism to jack and Grady's talk in the bathroom. While nowadays it might not be THAT effective it was probably jolting to watch when it first released.

You got my subscription in the first 5 seconds of watching the first video of yours that I’ve ever watched. The typewriter scene with your changes……. Bravo
I always thought the scene where Jack (aka The Hotel at this point) tells Danny he wishes they could stay "forever and ever" at 8:30 was a clear reference to what Danny heard the Twins saying earlier. And while it probably means The Hotel has well and truly got into Jack's brain at this point, it could also possibly be Jack/The Hotel simply messing with Danny because it knows it will scare him to hear that after his encounter with the twins. Any thoughts?

he is wearing a green sweater/ shirt that sorta envelopes him in a way.
this of course is a reference to how green plays a role of the hotel in the movie, such as the bathroom scene with the bathtub.
even the toilet and sink is green.
It could be like demonic possession. The hotel in the end possesses Jack, and then he's happy.
Thank you so much for an engrossing piece of work on a film I’ve watched many times since I first saw it on its release. I remember the first time it felt as if a huge weight was on my chest making breathing difficult. That in no small part was the effect of the incredible musical score. What a contribution from Gordon Stainforth. Brilliant.

You are absolutely correct that the music infuses every second of the film with meaning, terror, and emotion.
There isn't a moment when music isn't playing. With music comes emotion and Kubrick wants emotion in every second of his films.
This is one of the most emotional films ever made.
I am sure that Kubrick was involved with the musical evolution of the film.

Wow, your insight into the score of this film was absolutely brilliant. Thank you for introducing us to Gordon Stainforths work. After seeing some DVD extras, I only remember seeing Wendy Carlos and Rachel Ekinds commentary about their composition of the main theme, Dies Irae. I did a short piece about its origins in one of my vids, but was never aware of Gordon’s efforts. And I must say, your video editing skills are pretty friggin impressive. As someone who just started using Premiere and After Effects a year ago, I know how much work can go into making a video like this. I can only hope to be on your level. Great job dude 👍🏼. You got my sub not only for your skills, but cuz you’re as much of a fan of this film as I am.

What a brilliant analysis of an all-too-often overlooked aspect of the Overlook. As someone who loves various types of unusual/emotionally extreme music and horror film, I was already aware of the Bartok Adagio’s central role. Your deep dive into the “Mickey Mousing” took my appreciation for the effectiveness of this musical selection - as well as my appreciation for Gordon Stainforth’s masterful editing (let alone the humility apparent in the comment he left here, which I suspect has helped him keep an open mind and consistently learn from others en route to honing such an impressive craft over his career) - to a whole new level. Until the release of the 4k I've only know the cut version, it's seems to me that only the Moog is used until Jack starts to lose his mind'. That's the start of real strings being played. Maybe Mr Stanforth could comment of this is the case.

This is so ironic in that Kubrick meticulously plans every aspect of the production, so that the music was added in post and fits so well with the cinematography without forethought by Kubrick is amazing. I have seen several documentaries about The Shining and this the first I have seen that mentions the musical synchronization.
