Porsche Carrera RS - BTS with DTS - Ep. 2

- The 1973 Porsche Carrera RS is instantly recognizable thanks to its distinctive “Carrera” scripts and ducktail. It’s also one of the most valuable 911 road cars that exists, even if it looks more than a bit like every other 911 of the era. So what makes the RS so special and why does it exist in the first place?
Derek Tam-Scott explores these questions and more in this video, contextualizing the RS in terms of what else was happening at Porsche at the time, including the surprisingly significant role of the 917 in the origin of the RS. He describes how the RS differs from lesser 911s, and explains that the fundamental purpose of the car was to homologate it for racing by building a minimum of 500 examples for road use. The racing version of the car, the RSR, was exceptionally successful, often beating all out racing prototypes in endurance races and ultimately paving the way for a host of other extremely successful 911-based race cars, ultimately culminating with the 935 achieving an overall win at Le Mans in 1979.
With all this racing heritage, what is the car like on the street? In short, it’s epically good, and Derek can’t stop talking about it.
BTS (behind the scenes) with DTS:
Derek Tam-Scott’s spirit age is excess of 75 years old, and nowhere is that clearer than his taste in cars. At age 16, he went to work at one of the United States' foremost vintage car dealers, which cemented his elderly taste. Now with a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving, and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced many of the world’s most iconic cars. And even liked some of them.
Most of the car enthusiasts of Derek’s generation (and well, let’s be honest, even a generation or two before him) don’t have much experience with the magic of vintage cars prior to the 1980s, and therefore lack the knowledge and exposure to get genuinely excited about them. The goal of BTS is to give an insider’s perspective on why these cars particularly are great...or at least interesting and noteworthy. Derek brings his encyclopedic knowledge and broad experience together to contextualize these cars to give the audience understanding of both why it matters, and what it’s actually like to experience the cars.

Wow, that closing shot. This car's idle says more in 10 seconds than most modern performance cars do in their lifetimes
They’re not allowed to cause of emmisions
Yeah man, that idle would make most passers-by today turn their faces into a condascending scowl. But seconds later, as you floor it and row through the gears, anyone with ears will be taken aback at the musicality of the engine charging for the redline again and again.
Truly glorious car. Just like Hyphen says, I need one.
@@ss-jr5mk yet this probably still gets 20 o the gallon which a chunk of the brand new US car market struggles
This is a huge improvement in terms of audio mixing from the Miura video. The music is in the background where it should be, allowing the car and your history lesson to take center stage. There are still a few moments where the music is heard over the car so there is still a little progress left to be made, but overall I am very happy with the improvement. As with last time the camera work is stunning and I learned some things about this car.
I couldn't finish watching the Miura video because of the audio- so infuriating
Apart from the fact that it's ridiculously quiet? I had to turn up the gain just to hear what he was saying.
It's not that Derek's voice is badly-placed in the mix, it's that his voice doesn't have a lot of low end so it ends up fighting with the music for its place within the mix. If the lower registries of it were boosted a little it would stand out more.
You are really good at this.
Absolutely outstanding. This is gearhead content on a level with Carfection, Petrolicious, FortNine...top-tier.
I'm pleasantly surprised to see this side of Hyphen. He's doin a real good job.
So glad you mentioned all the good ones :) This channel is so good.
Thanks for the recommendations!
Copy cats eh?
This is not gear head content, this is homoeroticism masquerading as gear head content. 13:30 to 14:10 , he's not talking about riding a car, he's talking about riding a man.
You're killing it with these BTS my dude. Keep it up!
Brandon Tam-Scott?
I have both an original 73RS and 71S 2.2. I can tell you that the 73RS is on another level. Amazingly fast and tight for such an older car. Great job... I have owned my cars for quite a while -- and I did not know some of the information you provided... Great Job!
Oh my god the cinematography on this is amazing. No other car channel does it like this.
And the history tidbits are fantastic too.
The writing, the history and the care with which it is told, the interestedness and interestingness; the photography, the evocative night-film, the rounding off of the start and finishing edges - the sheer sensibility.
Just superb. Well done!
Huge improvements in production and mixing over the Muira video, loved the driving footage, the in car stuff was filmed so well. Looking forward to seeing more of these videos and please more carmudgeon.
Completely agreed. The script was much better in my opinion too and it felt more natural, I feel like it only needs some pauses in certain areas for effect
Those last paragraphs... Amazing. And the video too... Those driving bits without commentary... Serious goosebumps!! Thank you!
Manufacturers take note: This is what REAL pops and bangs sound like, not those farts you think are pops and bangs.
Sadly, they really don't have choice nowadays. The regulations keep getting tighter and tighter
@@nbmaheswara While I understand the regulations, I disagree that regulations cause those farts and pops that are in every car these days.
That's people trying to engineer in good noises that cannot exist-- which again, I also sympathize with, but they don't sound good to me. They're not genuine.
@@nbmaheswara They actively dump fuel into the exhaust to make stupid noises that only morons like. Regulations have nothing to do with it.
@@thegirthquake8574 How about the Jaguar F-Types? Even the V6's have some of the naughtiest noises of modern cars. Maybe they are kinda contrived, but they sound much better than any turbo german "brrrrrr FFFMPP brrrrrrrrr FFFMMMPPPP!!!!!! brrr FFFFFFFFFMMMMMMMPPPP" Seriously on the germans (Audi, BMW, Merc) the in-between throttle fart is louder than the regular exhaust note.
@@Mr888rM Auto Trader posted this video about PPF ruining cars sounds. ua-cam.com/video/7lLzG3K3psE/v-deo.html
Regulations do have something to do with it.
Blows my mind that minor tweaks could take a car like this to a whole other level. No wonder replicas & tributes are so common.
I'd like to see a comparison with a period correct 911S to see how they match up.
Great video. For someone so young you definitely understand the soul of a decades old Porsche. I've always regretted selling my 69 S but after watching this video I really miss the "stump puller".
One of the most professionally done videos. The commentary is intoxicating. Very well done!
Would have liked an explanation of the 3 tip exhaust vs the single side most RS's have? Great video, one of the best cars ive ever driven as well.
Single exhaust is probably an aftermarket option for restomodding
This series so far is amazingly impressive. DTS personality suits these reviews perfectly.
Man am I glad I found this channel and group of enthusiasts. Amazing.
Great job hyphen! Awesome vid, awesome car... the scene at the end where you drive off intonthe twisties, as the cover of night falls overhead is just magic! The noise this thing makes is orgasmic!
This is just superb. Slightly longer format with a history lesson picking out the essentials and the plain interesting. Beautifully shot with passion, enthusiasm and objectivity all perfectly balanced. Looking forward to the next one!
Poetry in motion in every sense of the phrase. Keep up the great work. Bravo!
Amazing, thanks for these productions. It really brightens my week.
Magnificent and magical piece of media.. Thank you..
I watch a LOT of YOU Tube Video’s. THIS is my favorite video ALL TIME. Thanks. Subscribed.
Loving both the modern and the historical footage, both top notch!
This has to be the very best dedicated RS video I've ever watched here! Fabulous in every way. Well done to you sir.
These type of content make me cry!!!!!!!!! Keep it up!!!!
Phenomenal work Derek! Great weaving of the RS’s / Porsche’s history with your experience of driving the car. You get at the essence of the driving experience in so many poetic and meaningful ways! I don’t think I’ve ever heard the raw analog driving experience described so well and thoroughly.
Your sincerity, research, cinematography and articulateness are refreshing. This video is a keeper! Would love to see more! Cheers!
Great content! The car, the commentary, the cinematography; all top notch. Keep up the good work DT-S.
This channel is so underrated it's unreal, you won yourself a new subscriber, can't wait to share this quality content with my friends!
This is what automotive journalism SHOULD be! Thanks for sharing your genuine passion for driving.
Fine job DT-S 🤙
One of the best car videos I have ever seen. Your description of one of the best cars ever made, was poetic!!
Beautiful video!! Everything I love about a 911 captured in a perfectly shot video! Cheers!
My god. Absolutely glorious work
A lot of comments about audio - watch with headphones on and everything is better. Fantastic bit of video that makes my work lunch "magical." Thanks DT-S!
Beautifully shot. There's just something magical about old cars with their yellow headlights on an empty night road.
I would drive wheels of of that car.
I've found those reviews about week ago and I'm watching them all.
Trully a work of passion.
Lovely! Well done DTS. Keep them coming
Epic video on the 1973 Porsche 2.7 RS. This video shows magical passion and brilliance for the car.
Very thoroughly researched, written, filmed and produced. Hats off. Keep this up!
You really outdid yourself hyphen. This video encapsulates why I will always own a Porsche.
Great video! I can understand (almost) now why they are worth what they are. It’s great to see and hear these cars in video, I’ll be lucky to ever see one in person.
you took it to Stage Road.... bravo Hypen, you are my hero
Have to give you credit. This piece is automotive visual art on all aspects. I'm a consumer of the podcast and now a new fan of your new series. Great blend of education and excitement.
Nice work on this. Really enjoyed it!
Can't believe this has only got 17,000 views. Madness.
What a video; looking forward to more of this series 👌🏽
Watching this again and again. ❤❤
Oh man, this is spectacular. Thank you for producing such beautiful content. Being a citizen of the bay area (actually from Monterey area), I am very familiar with those roads. And the amount of information in this video is just so enlightening. Thanks again.
This has gotta be one of the best shows on youtube
Another extremely well done video. Looking forward to more. 👍👍
Amazing how the car and it's dynamics are very well described an in a passionate way. 10/10 for everything, thoug.
I really enjoyed that. Always enjoy your content. Love Porsche. The only way I could’ve enjoyed it more had it not been 75 ads in this video.
Nice job Derek.
Well done joy to watch over and over!
Keep going Hyphen. Informative, classy and natural. Beautiful video. Cheers
stunning video keep it up!
LOVE this! What a car. Beautiful production too. Great work!
Fenomenale good movie ! great filming and all the correct details. Thank you.
Outstanding video. I may never be able to afford one of these in my lifetime or even see one in flesh. This could be the most intimate we could get with this car. Thanks for the experience.
GORGEOUS VIDEO.
Thanks for petrol head review of an exceptional car. Big thanks from Baku, Azerbaijan
Thank you, wauuuu, I could almost feal the car through your description.
I loved the nod at the end to the talk you guys had on the podcast. Great camera magic if I may say...
beautifully done!
Love this content! Hope the views pick up, and hope you guys can drudge through it until they do! Thank you!
The quality of the video video is amazing 👏
I have to agree with everything! However his car sounds very different than my RS. I think the 73 RS with the stock exhaust has a much deeper and less ear piercing sound which to my ears is much more pleasing to listen to!
I personally prefer the free fuel flow and cracks with this exhaust but to each their own
Beautiful video.
Goosebumps!!
Great video!!!🙌🙌🙌🙌
Nicely put Derek 👌
Thank you, a great video, with a lot of heart and passion. Subscribed. I shall scale up in Carrera RS from 1:24 to 1:1.:)
Beautiful video
This video is on another level 😍
A classic 911 is just beautiful. The Duck Tail rear end and curvy front fenders make me a 911 fan
Very nice video DTS.
These are great!
Absolutely stunning
That engine note 😍😍😍
You love the sound of marbles rattling in a tin can!?! Sounds like it’s self destructing and it probably is.
Growing up this was my dream car.. had a 1:18 die cast model proudly displayed in my room for pretty much my entire childhood. Man, what I’d do for them to be even reasonably obtainable, like they were when I was a kid. Now, forget it. A boy can dream…
The pops and bangs are intoxicating
Beautiful video, is there an episode 1?
What a car.... mind blown by it
Love how the intro closed caption at the start says "Music" :)
Outstanding!
Hyphen you killed this.
BZ
There go the Touring values 😧. Fantastic review -.
Ive drove one once 20 years back here in the UK and yes on a Track it is number 1 so light and agile and you can carry so much speed into a corner it is 911 King
Great video Hyphen!
Well done...visually and verbally. Keep it up.
Great video DTS
Those staccato pops are the absolute best
Outstanding video guys. thank you for listening to our constructive criticism from the first episode, we can tell you listened. Huge improvement, looking forward to the next one.
Ohhh this is fantastic!
Well done!
If you haven't driven an old 911, it is hard to comprehend what the the big deal is all about, because of engine placement, it drives completely differant to front engine cars, the feeling is like a go cart, the sound is glorious, the shape, and curves, there is no substitute.
Props to Gary at GD Racing in San Bruno for keeping these Bay Area cars in shape all these years!
Thank you
just dope this video
Well done! Awesome video. I was hoping to see content like this after Cammisa left. My only criticism is that at times you can tell you are reading something rather then sounding natural. Keep them coming! Maybe a piece on an Alfa 105 GTA , Lancia Fulvia or BMW 2002?
Well done.
This is f@king awesome.
