McLaren F1 - BTS with DTS - Ep. 5

- Опубліковано 16 жов 2024
- In its day, the McLaren F1 seized headlines for its record-breaking top speed, but in reality, that was never one of the car’s performance objectives and it is actually one of the least interesting features of the car. In this video, Derek Tam-Scott discusses many of the more interesting parts of the F1.
Such as the fact that the car’s designer, Gordon Murray, tried to be allowed to sit in the car while it was crash tested. Or the fact that it’s almost exactly the same size as a Porsche Boxster. And 10 inches shorter than a modern 911, 2.5 feet shorter than an XJ220, and 700 pounds lighter than either. Or the fact that the production manager for the car once spent an entire weekend going to grocery stores looking for the perfect eggplant (well, aubergine) to match its color at the request of the customer who had ordered a car. And much more.
The car is of course one of the most revered and desired cars of all time. Derek asks (and answers) whether it’s overhyped or whether the car truly does deserve the attention it receives. He also explores the origins of the car, starting with Gordon Murray’s Formula 1 cars at Brabham and McLaren, and on through the development of the F1, including why the car is powered by a BMW Motorsport engine. In the course of this discussion, he reveals the almost innumerable reasons why the car is so unlike any other car before or since, a key part of its enduring legacy.
BTS (behind the scenes) with DTS:
Derek Tam-Scott’s spirit age is excess of 75 years old, and nowhere is that clearer than his taste in cars. At age 16, he went to work at one of the United States' foremost vintage car dealers, which cemented his elderly taste. Now with a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving, and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced many of the world’s most iconic cars. And even liked some of them.
Most of the car enthusiasts of Derek’s generation (and well, let’s be honest, even a generation or two before him) don’t have much experience with the magic of vintage cars prior to the 1980s, and therefore lack the knowledge and exposure to get genuinely excited about them. The goal of BTS is to give an insider’s perspective on why these cars particularly are great...or at least interesting and noteworthy. Derek brings his encyclopedic knowledge and broad experience together to contextualize these cars to give the audience understanding of both why it matters, and what it’s actually like to experience the cars.

Yes! I totally agree! PLEASE DO IT! LIKE HIS COMMENT! Greetings from Pergamino, Argentina.
THIS PLEASE! there is no pure high quality raw Mclaren F1 audio on youtube, that would be a service to the world.
Yes
I was fortunate enough to see F1 chassis No. 001 being driven on public roads in Woking, Surrey. The car was being driven to Park Lane, London in 1994 to be shown at McLaren’s tiny showroom located on Park Lane which I visited several times and there it remained for several years. A tiny motor car that carried huge presence and pure, uncluttered beauty.
Videos and pictures don’t do the F1 justice but I have to say this video comes pretty bloody close and loved every second of it, particularly integrating modern footage with awesome engine sounds and original footage of the cars early conception to construction and testing, could have watched more and all day long, never get bored of the McLaren F1.
Thank you ISSIMI
Holy shit -- this is probably the best F1 related footage we're gonna see for a while
Not probably this is the best
Agree. This is the best thing I’ve seen on UA-cam in a long while.
You are correct sir

I’m all for the Sultan having multiple F1s. Someone, someday, will essentially have (and ostensibly be able to show the world) a new McLaren F1. What a glorious day that will be.
That, sir, is the best love letter to a car I have ever seen.
Nope its a commercial since this very car is for sale.
Whatever the case, it tugs at the heart. And that's what matters
Am I the only one who got goosebumps and shed a tear just by feeling the shear passion and purity this car transmits?
I sure did!
No, I get exactly the same feeling, and have for 30 years!
@@Dtamscott Thank you for sharing this absolutely fantastic content!
Very yes
like from a gt3 between 8 and 9k rpm, or clink from a warmed up miata gearbox
I've just recently thought that there is very little high quality footage of the Mclaren F1.
Brilliantly captured, arguably the best video on the F1. Really well done and thank you, ISSIMI and Derek Tam Hyphen Scott!
Doing the important work, let's be honest.
Check out Best Motoring's F1 review from the 90s.
@@MrCarGuy also the one by supercar driver, its about the Mclaren F1 GTR but its still good
EVO and Autocar have nice videos on it.
There's no better two things than these when owning a car of this tier.
1. Drive the car the way it's meant to be driven.
2. Make a sick video to memorialize those memories for the rest of eternity.
Spectacularly shot
Wow! Well done! Finally someone flooring it!
it only took like 30 years
...and bouncing off the rev limiter in 1st gear.
Check out the Tiff Needell McLaren F1 videos ! There is also a video in Japanese from Best Motoring absolutely hooning the car.
Edit: 'Martin Brundle's Supercars' review of the car is also great.
@@Andynath100 Yes, the Best Motoring review is fantastic
@@MrCarGuy yeah ! The F1 is my favourite car but what I've realised from a lot of reading/videos and the Best Motoring video is that it was never optimised for the track.
It has a soft suspension and rolls a lot, as such it needs a really good driver to control it's twitchiness and be fast around a track. The brakes also haven't aged well apparently. The '95 GTR added a rear roll bar to make it much better for the track and they modified the car quite a bit for '96 and '97(duh).
It is definitely a road car first and I don't agree about the high downforce comments made in this video.
Edit: I just noticed in the description that this car is for sale on their platform. Makes sense they don't say anything bad about it in the video. Better to treat this video as a love letter than anything close to a review.
This channel is criminally underrated.
Agree 100%. They deserve far more views than they're getting, the cinematography, the script, the editing & the information shared is second to none.
Bro Fucking facts
Agreed
Feels like a lot of people just discovered it, this F1 piece was fantastic.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this! Thank you 🙏🏻
As did I.
Holy mother of god, that induction noise is intoxicating.
You can get 99% of the same experience via E46 M3 with a CSL air box, long tube headers and a performance exhaust. The S54, though structurally a bit different, is basically half of the MF1's V12. Its one reason the E46 M3's have always been desirable. Those who know, know.... ; )
@@djjmann I've got no idea.
@@djjmann Yes the noise might be 80% as nice but you cannot resume the F1 experience solely to the noise. It's the fact that everything is perfect on the F1 that makes it so special (and desirable). (Also a big fan of the E46 M3 though)
@@djjmann just stop..
@@djjmann Please don't compare a BMW M3 to the Mclaren F1
I know the history of the F1 intimately. Have read the book, have sat it one. Have watched all the videos. Yet your wrap up still gave me chills.
The F1 has and forever will be my favorite car. When I first saw this car on a poster as kid it left a permanent impression and I've loved it ever since. I can only hope that one day I get a chance to simply see one of these in person. It genuinely is the greatest car ever made.
Lamborghini Aventor blows it away EASILY
Same. I still have the issue of Road & Track where I read about it the first time. It's such a gorgeous car, and does seem like it's too good to be true even 25 years later.
@@kazamk5367 what are you smoking? I love the aventador but it comes nowhere close to the F1
@@kazamk5367 mclaren f1 is faster to 170mph and 200mph and while the lambo hits it's top speed the mclaren is only getting started 😂🚀
I honestly thought it was impossible to love the F1 more than I already did. Sometimes being proved wrong isn’t always a bad thing.
I've seen many videos about the F1 but this one is masterful.
it is so beautiful and well designed that it doesn't look dated at all, only the lights assembly and the wheel size would make it look older than a modern sports car. What a magnificent thing, I wasn't even alive when this came out and it is probably my favourite car
You are killing it! I predict this video will hit a million views at some point, the F1 is the absolute pinnacle of the automobile
wtf, obi wan?
I mean. No.
Jaw dropping visuals and sound. That intro was outstanding. What a colour.
There are so few good UA-cam films about the F1! Thanks ever so much for creating this for us, Derek!
Wow, what a car, still peerless after all these years, and clearly still the benchmark against which all other performance cars should be measured.
Thanks DT-S, terrific work I absolutely loved it!!
I don't think we will ever see any vehicle as groundbreaking as the F1. With no disrespect to Gordon Murray's latest development, the T.50, the F1 was a stratospheric leap beyond what any manufacturer was producing in a road car of the era. Even today it still looks modern and still capable of out accelerating some modern rivals. Back then it was the proverbial mic drop of automotive engineering.
That may be the best video I’ve seen about the greatest car ever made. That intake growl is spine tingling.
The finest road-going machine ever conceived by man. A creation of absolute beauty, nearly perfect in every way.
This is one of the best sounding engines BMW ever made, thank god someone isn't scared of mobbing in theirs.
That's what's so cool about the F1. It was built to do it all day, every day for 200,000 miles
To me it is the best minus maybe the m1 procar
The F1’s exhaust is my choice for the third best sounding NA V12 ever made after the Lamborghini mercy SV, and the Ferrari F50 which ironically, would just happen to be Ferrari’s supercar answer to this car
Until this channel takes off it will be my secrete little gem.
McLaren F1 !!!? Damn what a treat for Hyphen Scott !
It’s Tam Hyphen Scott lol
How do you drop a McLaren F1 video at 3am on a Tuesday?
Don‘t ask, just enjoy.
It was a EU exclusive 😀
Upload it when you can, set timer on youtube when it should be online and voila
they didn't have to go this hard
but they did
Thank you for getting a proper recording of the sound, I have never been able to find a good sound clip of this, the greatest of all time.
More driving vids of it!🤩🤩🤩
It is nearly without debate that the McLaren F1 will go down as the GOAT for all road cars for all time. There is nothing that compares with this, and only the upcoming Gordon Murray built T.50 will be a proper sequel. But, like most sequels...we always go back to the original recipe. Thank you for a magical video showcasing just how unbelievable this car is...which has been my personal all-time favorite road car since it's inception and will never be dethroned. Best of the Best!
It’s hard to put into words the feeling I get seeing this car. I guess it’s another duality; the complete lust and awe of it, but also the realization that I will never be able to experience the perfection that this car embodies.
Holy shit, never expected to see an F1 on your channel! Thank you! 👏
There are moments when you are truly speechless about something.... something that is too damn good to be real.... something that very well defies the laws of the universe....
This car is arguably the only engineering marvel in it's completeness in the history of science that has achieved the above. Like we say greats mentioning Ali, Pele, Bubka, Bolt, Federer, O'sullivan, Serena, Bradman ... in sports, this car is probably above all in it's ingenuity in the realm of engineering. Thank you ISSIMI for not only letting us know but also making us feel what it truly is... something that lies beyond being the Masterpiece....
This is still the single greatest automobile of all time. There are cars that have a higher top speed, better handling at the very limit, or are more nimble on the tightest of roads, but none of them are the entire package. The fact that this car is legitimately near perfect, a paradox of impossibility, the have your cake and eat it, is why nothing ever has, or ever will come close.
T50 tho
Yeah. Gotta wait for reviews on Gordon Murray's T.50 before saying these. The F1 might still turn out to be better, but Murray specifically designed the T.50 to better the F1 in every way. Gordon doesn't have a history of not meeting his design goals.
@@r129r16pfl it's the mclaren f1 of the 21 century
I never realised how good an F1 looks in red until this video. The noise though, is pure magic. I was lucky enough to be there for testing when the West race cars were at the Nurburgring. A memory I treasure still.
The quality of this video compliments the precision and creative thought that the F1 embodies.
The F1's unparalleled greatness is one of the reasons why I, and many others, can't wait to see the new T50 on the road testifying to Gordon Murray's incredible innovation. It's going to be magnificent for the privileged few that get to partake. I hope this channel covers it.
Quite possibly the most apt tribute to 'the perfect car'. Well chosen words combined and delivered in a symphonic tribute that a masterpiece like this deserves. Bravo.
One of the best f1 videos I’ve ever seen! Time for a T.50 video DT-S
Best Vid yet by DTS. You're finding your grove of technics and emotion.
Ahhhhhh!!! A film on the F1 I haven't seen yet. Hard to find those LOL. Thanks brother! nice work! AND something I didn't know about the windows defrosting. I was studying transport design in Coventry Uni when this was being built and I can tell you the buzz was palpable.
Man I got emotional watching this. Amazing work Hyphen and team!
Dude what a time to be alive! To think I've never knew or heard any of this amazing details about how this car came to be yet was always told it was the pinnacle just like the LFA. Proves that 90's-2000's was the best time for driver's cars. Now to to think Gordon Murray struck lightning twice with the T.50 is... heartstopping. Just like Savagegeese's video on the LFA, you have opened my eyes to the beauty of the McLaren F1. Thank you for this gift, you've so earned this sub and like good sirs. Godspeed.
the lfa is shit compared to an F1/T.50
T50 is ugly
Best F1 video I’ve seen in some time. Really appreciate it Derek, always love seeing more about this machine I fell in love with in the 90’s!
It is absolutely CRIMINAL how few views this has. Thank you for this video, the world desperately needs more F1 owners to share their cars
Unbelievable car, amazing footage. I can't imagine the throttle response of the T.50. The F1 already was nuts
T50 has an even quicker engine pickup
You can't see it but I'm giving you a standing ovation right now. This is hands down the best F1 piece I've ever seen. Saying "well done" seems insufficient but I'm saying it anyway. Well done!
That red is gorgeous
Thank you Jason Cammisa for giving DTS the automotive contacts to make this series of videos as they are absolutely terrific! His technical acumen is the perfect addition to Jason’s smart ass wit and this channel is a hidden gem.
and we thought Doug got a exclusive look at the f1..this is insane!
I enjoyed both. Doug had of course more of the usual things that are said, written or reported on the F1 (If I hear or read one more article about the goldlined engine bay I will throw up!). This report had really new stuff which is not mainstream. Excellent.
This is proper commercial since this car is for sale.
@@mducheine2784 i think might i know one part of that "new stuff" you're talking about. Experience, as a driver, as a car enthusiast.
Glad someone ordered an F1 in something besides silver or black. That red is awesome, and the guy who ordered it, thank you sir.
All five of my cars my ever owned have been black I love all black 😍😍😍
That Eggplant color requesting client was none other than George Harrison.
The best overview of the F1. Captures the history, and a relevant commentary about the driving experience. Absolutely brilliant.
Best review of the MF1 I've seen to date. Very thorough! And thank you for providing its natural V12 soundtrack.
I just found this channel and I’m so happy I have. This has to be the best McLaren F1 video or short documentary I’ve ever seen. No nonsense. To the point and full of the information that matters. Thank you 🙏🏻

Even the starter makes an awesome sound lol
The coolest car ever made. The T50 will surely be faster and more controllable, but theres something so pure about this styling, everything about the whole car just being pure functional, purposeful beauty.
Excellent, excellent mini-documentary! Very informative, beautifully shot, well written, superbly narrated, and most importantly...very entertaining! Well done!
this has to be the best video I’ve seen about the F1, also the best footage that can be found of it, really great work, congratulations

This has quickly become one of my favourite UA-cam videos. Thank you Derek and the Issimi team
There was never such a content on yt about F1 before :O I expected gentle drive, but this? Holy shit!
I think the Porsche 962 video by them was equally good. ua-cam.com/video/H9LSSluvONI/v-deo.html
There are videos of aggressively driving them but all older.
@@MrCarGuy The video quality isn't much to look at.
This is probably the only 20mins+ video on UA-cam that I have or will watch without skipping any second of it.
Those last ten seconds tho! I can’t stop skipping back and listening again and again...
This 20 minute video took me an hour to watch because I kept rewinding and pausing to gawk at the beauty of this car and the cinematography.
This is the greatest video on the F1 that I’ve ever seen.
One of few that mentions active fan aero on the car. Albeit only in video form. Not a word about it.
I very much appreciate the long sweeping camera shots you use, it really allows the viewer to soak in the beauty and presence of the legendary cars you feature; also the script is well written and concise. Subscribed.
Bravo Derek! Amazing video with a well-written script and great story-telling talent...hats off...cheers
There are too few modern, high quality, video reviews on the McLaren F1. Thank you for making this world a little bit better with this great video.
Hands off, best car content on UA-cam. Bravo!
So glad you shot this with a standard car, it's so much better looking than all the be-winged specials.
This is the most pornographic content on this channel yet, including Hyphen taking his top off in the Shelby GT500 video
I think there is a theme. I'm pretty sure Jason took off his pants in the MAT Stratos ICONS video. lol
What a brilliant video. Detailed but keeps your attention, passionate but does not over sell.
Genuinely made me feel emotional and so engrossed. Well done and thank you.
The greatest car ever made, and likely to be ever made! It’s perfect!
This is the best summary / review I have ever seen on the F1. Gave me goosebumps and the same feeling as when I first saw it. I was 29 when it came out and for several years after I couldn’t drive through London without stopping at the Park Lane showroom to marvel at both the single car and engine on display there. Unique.
This video could have been 2 hours long I reckon :) Totally amazing.
Why? Seems like a piece of shet car compared to the great Lamborghini Gallardo
*should have been
When you think the last thing you need is another video on the F1 and then you're glued to your screen for 20 minutes. Outstanding video.
The F1 has always exceeded my expectations. Thanks for producing a video which does the same. 😎
I’m honored. Couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you!
Hi Erik, do you like the T.50?
@@TheKostick I am thrilled to see Gordon getting another opportunity to produce his vision with the benefits of hindsight and 30 years of technological improvements. He and I spoke briefly about the T.50 project in 2019 before they had really lifted the veil for the general public and he assured me it would be over and above any expectations. I’ve been following it closely since the public launch last year and so far I’m very impressed with everything they have released. The 100 customers they have lined up will end up with a very special experience - certainly the first properly worthy successor to the F1.
@@Peloton25 I follow the T.50 development with great interest too. I think the T.50 and Valkyrie are the greatest car projects of our times.

The McLaren F1: It “goes like sex”
Not that I have seen all UA-cam videos on the McLaren F1, but this one has been the best and most informative one. The F1 truly is a perfect design. Even if it does have a flaw here and there...it's still just perfect.
Fascinating review of one of the most important cars ever made.
Best thing I've watched this week. I've obsessed over these since they were new, but did not know about the transverse gearbox, underrated detail that I think doesn't get much mention.

Yeeees! Frickin' nice to see present day footage where the F1 is getting the beans and hitting the rev limiter...! Whoever is driving, I tip my hat to you in awe and respect.
I love the fact that Isuzu always forgotten when talking about the Mclaren F1 engine despite they are the only one who's willing to rise to the challenge that Gordon Murray presented.
Probably because their engine proposal was never used.
Murray wanted an engine builder with F1 pedigree, so Ferrari, Honda, and BMW who could provide that and meet his qualifications
Isuzu at the time was only building economy cars and heavy trucks, no real significant motorsport claim to their name
@@ShaiyanHossain yeah but they are on the verge of entering formula 1 with Lotus. The v12 engine they build exceeded every single specifications that Murray asked. 3.5L 650bhp 12000rpm V12.
Murray, being a brand snob instead have to beg to BMW which was not interested in building the engine for mclaren. Which is why the F1 end up with an off the shelf bmw engine tuned by M division.

@@ilovelimpfries there's no telling how good that Isuzu engine would have done in the F1 though. Isuzu had no real F1 experience to source ideas from at the time. And Murray already had connections and experience working with BMW engines in own cars for Brabham. Pedigree to him is proven race results, which Isuzu just did not have at the time. Call it being a snob, but if it involves making the best roadcar possible from the best components, you want someone with a trusted reputation to be making your engine

Awesome DTS, great documentary. Side note: standing on the bluff over looking turn 6, watching the LMR rounding the corner, and then being treated to the sound of the V12 under duress head up the hill to the corkscrew is something I’ll never forget. The 333SP and Judd v10 probably had more beautiful sounds, nothing had the angry edge of the BMW 12
