I used to feel the same way but the thing is, you'll always stall and you're just going to have to accept that. Accept that you will feel silly when it happens. We are not perfect. I'm a year into driving a manual and I stalled twice today going up a dirt mountain road with traffic going 1-2mph.
Happened to me quite a few times. A couple of times at hills, slow moving traffic, and traffic lights. A little embarrassing and annoying while holding back a couple of cars but yeah... Just apologised and kept going 😅 1st year of manual

It’s good to fear I guess I stalled yesterday for an entire stoplight. It happens! Take a deep breath and start again. Don’t rush yourself and always remember, You’re driving the car. No one else!
First time I stalled was in a 4 lane intersection. Luckily the guy behind me had a manual too and was just giving the thumbs up. Mistakes happen and people know that. Don’t panic or rush. Stalling is natural! 2-3 years later I won’t pay attention and stall 😂
Try to practice in a flat surface and bring the clutch up to where the car vibrates so much it's about to stall. Get used to that feeling and immediately clutch down everytime that happens. But it's safer to clutch down a bit earlier before the shaking happens.
Mainly for downhill, i feel like riding the clutch is a little excessive. I’d personally recommend staying in neutral and feathering the break, keeping the clutch from being engaged. To re engage in gear, put it in second once you hit a bit above you’re idle rpm and let the clutch back out. Excellent video, just wanted to add a personal tip to anyone this can help
Thank you. You have a valid point. I think I'd be more likely to use that technique if I was going down a long steep hill with no traffic ahead of me or if the traffic was moving at a decent pace.
Hi. Love this video, so easy to understand with how you explain it. I am struggling with slowing down/ and gearing down at the right time to safely go from major roads to minor roads. Do you have any videos to help with this?? Thank you 😊
Nice video But like to see you do videos on how to slow down at roundabouts and junctions. Something I struggled was with when I would move down from gear 3 to gear 2 I would panic, car would jolt or end up coasting. Slowing down/gearing down smoothly I also think positioning on the road is another issue for me. Can't really tell how far I am away from a car beside me or when car is incoming on a two way road. Usually end up guessing/steering without really thinking how close/far I am from another car. I have this same issue with parking on left. I kinda guess to see if I am near the kerb or not. I don't really calculate/judge it properly. I can only check once I park on the left and look at side mirror to see how far I am from kerb.
What happens when my leg starts shaking from holding the clutch for 5 minutes. My clutch is stiff as hell. But 6:23 is exactly what I needed to know. That. And how to smoothly upshift. Somehow revmatch downshifting and pulling away from a stop in first gear were the easy things for me. Shifting from 1st to 2nd I still can’t get perfectly smooth my mirror scent always goes forward a smidge and it drives me nuts.
I thought that staying in gear in heavy traffic was bad. So the proper way is to just shift into neutral. What's the correct way? I really need to know.
If you’re at a stop light and it’s taking a while, it’s best to sit in neutral. However if you’re in traffic like this which is constantly stopping and starting it’s completely ok to stay in first and hold the clutch
I mean if you put logic in to it, you're not going to stall in neautral ever.. and you can rest more. if you're on First gear or two you're constantly pressing the clutch. So those 2 are prob on a scenario where you're either on a traffic light or you're on a moving and stopping traffic.
You make it quite fun. I have actually driven manual since I was a teen. In 2017 I bought a new A4 B9, six speed; however, the handbrake was gone, now it is a switch in the center console, activated and deactivated by the index finger. I live around a lot of city hills and it was quite an adjustment, always used to that forceful handbrake. Wonder if you have dealt with that change. In the US only 2017-2018 were available in six speed, so not many of us with this scenario here, I suppose. Thanks!
4:39 i have noticed that every instructor saying to get the bitting point first than Gas! But when doing that and adding GAS why is it the left foot ( clutch ) is at the same time coming up tiny bit!? Why is it no one is explaining about that part!? M so confused
Can I ask is holding down the clutch (staying in first gear with handbrake on) bad for the clutch should I have the clutch AND brake down when sitting in traffic temporarily or is it ok clutch only ?
Either is OK. Whatever is easiest for you. The main thing is that the car is controlled. It's not bad for the clutch. My car is almost 9 years old and it's driven by leaners that way all the time and it's still fine.
There is not enough city driving out here in rural Iowa I don't know why I'm so hard on myself with driving stick everyone says I'm good with it but I don't feel like it because I still stall now and then but I just did get a new clutch assembly whole thing flywheel too it's cheaper then machining old one so i have to relearn all the micro biting point areas of the clutch it feels so much better different as well I'm just so used to the clutch with 232k on it 😂😂
To be fair, everyone stalls now and again. Especially if you have a different clutch to what you're used to. Did you pass your test in an auto or manual?
Hi sir I really liked your way of explaining very nice Sir can you help me because I already passed on Automatic car But now I really want to learn on Manual car so what i need to do for it please Thanks so much
Thank you Qasim. Glad you liked the way I explained. If you check out the playlist called driving lessons, there are a lot of lessons on there for manual cars. 😁
an issue i have with driving standard is driving smoothly at low speeds. While im in gear, first and second, especially first, when i touch the gas and let go the weigbt of the car transfers a lot. Im not using much power at all. Once im going a bit quicker i have no problems at all. Should I be using the clutch more?
can I please ask as the car moving slow in traffic , I hear you saying I must find the bite point with the clutch and be around bite not over a bite because speed may be rising but you quite about the gas , should I not use it????
At really slow speeds, most of the time you won't need to use the gas. If you're on a steep hill and your car is struggling, you might need a bit of gas.
Hi Mark! I’ve got my test coming up soon, and this is exactly how I’ve been driving in slow traffic. I’m worried that the examiner will deem it as coasting though? Or is this not a problem? Thanks
Now im on 2nd n there is a uturn, now i wont stop but vl go dead slow,What should i do when i get dead slow but don't want to stop , but pick up in that pace ? Shud i shift to 1st or keep it in 2nd n go?
@@ZONDOdriving okay so if my speed reached below 10 km/ph i should shift into 1st right?. Bcoz my driving instructor is like never shift into 1st when in moving condition, 1st is used only for pickup, even if slow then go in 2nd and too slow then press clutch and take it forward. So im confused. When i go on speed breaker slow, my engine stopped bcoz of no enough power . And i asked him should i shift to 1st? When going dead slow he is like no keep on second n play and do clutch play
What if i want to totally start the car up on a hill cuz when i get my foot off the clutch the car starts going down and if i leave the brake still it starts goin down
If the car is going down when you come off the brake, it means you haven't got enough of a biting point. Make sure you feel a bit of vibration first before releasing the brake, that way you know you've got enough of a bite and it shouldn't roll back. Hope that helps. 😁
Those people who go into neutral before the stop is to relieve the clutch... Holding down the clutch throughout a traffic like how you are showing is not recommended as it will damage the clutch
The first point doesn't work in a petrol or low torque engine or a fully loaded car. It's terrible advice and the car will always stall without giving it gas
Thanks for teaching, your explanation is very clear and easy to grasp Watching from Uganda 🇺🇬 ,,, 👋

You should go into neutral every now and again. There should be no reason for having to keep your foot on the clutch for that long.

I usually just dip the clutch down a bit if I'm going really slow and have to release the gas
Hi thanks for the video. Really learned a lot. One question tho, isnt it bad if you step on the clutch for too long?
It depends what you're doing with the gas and whether the clutch is at the biting point or not.

Zondo is this a car a diesel one? If I use my clutch alone I always stall. I am surprised that you said you moved without gas
Hi Doreen. This is a petrol. Some cars are really easy to stall which might be the case with your car.
Hi Mark! I’ve got my test coming up soon, and this is exactly how I’ve been driving in slow traffic. I’m worried that the examiner will deem it as coasting though? Or is this not a problem? Thanks
Don't worry about coasting. As long as you have control of the car, it doesn’t matter.
Unfortunately my clutch does not work like this. It’s either all or nothing or it stalls.
Same. The car I use needs alot of gas to move off a hill otherwise it either won't move at all or it stalls.

how do i yield for a car on a right turn without completely stopping the car and having to start from gear 1 again
It's a lot to do with timing, how the other car moves, whether you're on a hill or not and more.
What if i want to totally start the car up on a hill cuz when i get my foot off the clutch the car starts going down and if i leave the brake still it starts goin down

Not in the example I gave. Coasting is when it's not controlled and that usually involves higher speeds.

can i do brake and then clutch?
You can if you're going fast enough. If you do when going too slow, you risk the car stalling.
On the downhill part, can’t you just put it in neutral and control the car with the brake
is this true ?
You can. As long as you're good at getting back into gear again quickly enough once the traffic starts moving faster.
I feel you could panic when in free gear since you don't have much of car control.
You will overheat your brakes if it's a long trip down the hill (e.g. 45 minute journey down from a mountain).
