- Which is more influential - Amp or Cab? 1971 Marshall SuperLead with a 1969 Marshall 1960B with 1973 Celestion G12M25 75Hz Pulsonic Greenbacks and a 1976 Orange OR80 with a 1974 Orange 4x12 with 1971 Celestion G12H30 75Hz Pulsonic Greenbacks. Close mic Unidyne 548 and room mic AKG C451e. Outboard API 512C and API 525 into sound interface studio Konnekt 48 and PC with Cubase. Guitar 2016 Epiphone Les Paul Special 2.
I love that you're using a cheap Epiphone. That's awesome.
Amazingly each head sounds perfect with the cab that was voiced for it.
The Orange Cab with Marshall !!! 👍👍👍👍
Thanks David, that was probably the thickest tone. Great for solos
_Everything_ sounds good.
Especially with Johan playing.
Thanks my friend! I'm glad to hear that :-)
"holf stack" hahaha you're the greatest Johan, keep making awesome videos and great demos!
Thanks Austin!
You really can't go wrong with any of those sounds. I was reading today about a guitarist that was layering sounds on an album by moving the mic position and using a different mic so it sounded like two different guitars and amps. This is taking it to the next level.
Orange amp and cab sounds incredible.
This channel is by far my favorite UA-cam channel.
Very nice in deed and appreciated. I prefer the Marshall amp + Orange cab in this video. Oh my look at me dance around at 5:20
The video where you played the mesa boogie through a marhsall and a orange cap with the same speakers is still my favourite video from you. This video is great too!! loved it! i find every combination awesome :D
Thanks my friend, I'm glad you remember that one. Cheers Johan
marshall amp + orange cab is my favourite, I bet this was loud :D
Ben Tyreman I have to agree....no particular reason other than magically delicious! Orange amp is too compressed.
Thanks Ben, Yeah the ear defenders came in useful here :-)
Agreed!
Tone @1:49 is absolutely crushing! Orange shines where Marshall doesn't, I bet this setup would sound killer together.
Orange shines too much tho in my opinion
I prefer the Orange cab with both amps. I think I just prefer the meatier sound of the H magnets and the denser wood
I am surprised how much the cab made a difference! My fav was the marshall amp into the orange cab
Thank you John, You have many fans here in South Africa!
They both sound noticeably better with their same brand pair. Cool vid.
Agreed. Each pair would be awesome for double tracking in a recording.
Each amp into its own cab sounded best to me, with the Marshall having a slight edge for my personal preference. Straight classic Marshall tone. I would probably pull the treble back just a bit, too.
I need ALL of these combinations in my life!
Thanks David ;-)
Awesome riffs as always. Thanks for helping me unwind. My favorite is the Orange amp and Marshall cab. Has a real thick and heavy tone to me.
Thanks Jason, Yeah that's my choice for solo work. Cheers
Awesome!! Love that you are playing an Epiphone!
marshall head with the orange cab sounded killer! broadest eq with great lows and highs. the others sounded muddier by comparison, but thats only in a direct A/B/C/D comparison.
Thanks Danny!
I like the Marshall amp and Marshall cab best, then I like the Orange amp and Orange cab. Mixing heads and cabs was my least favorite. Between the Marshall and the Orange I'd have to hear it in the track! Love the Rock and Roll feel you have in these videos, you're a perfect drummer for the stuff you write too btw. Great job on these videos.
Thanks, I'm really glad to hear that!
Marshall into the Marshall cab!
Thanks! :-)
Very interesting. Thank you for this video! I personally prefer the Marshall head on the Orange cab sound, sounds slightly better to me than the Marshall/Marshall combination.
If there is something that I've learned from years watching your videos, is that speaker cabinets make the tone! Those vintage Marshall cabs are just full of mojo!
Marshall for me! But that Orange head sounded great through the slanty too! Thanks JS! You da ' man
Thanks David! :-)
Dude! Johan! You ROCK!!! This is the exact video comparison I asked for. Thank you so much. I'm watching/listening for the fifth time now and I keep noticing new subtleties in how each head reacts with each cabinet , but I will say this; I have three observations 1. The cabinet makes just as much difference as the amp, if not more. 2. The cabinets are obviously voiced for their matching head. 3. Regardless of cabinet, the true character of each head still manages to stay apparent and shine through. Overall my favorite was the Orange OR80 paired with the Orange 4x12. I love the Marshall sound, but there is just something about the punchier and chewier lower mids of the Orange that really sounds great. However, I suspect the Marshall would stand out for me in a mix of drums and bass. I definitely preferred both heads with their matching cabinet. The Marshall Superlead sounded a bit too harsh through the Orange 4x12 while the Orange OR80 sounded a bit too congested through the Marshall 1960B. As I mentioned to you already, Marshall and Orange are sort of the yin and yang of British tone for me. Two opposites that are complimentary at the same time. Both distinctly British in character, but with voices focused at opposite ends of the spectrum; Marshall being the upper mids focus and Orange being the lower mids focus (to my ears at least). Excellent playing as usual and a perfect A/B comparison video. I've been listening to your "album" compilation while stuck sitting at the computer at work. Great instrumentals to keep me rockin' through the day. Keep it up! This video and that compilation left me with one other idea for a video... a comparison of how different amps sit in the mix. I'd love to hear the Orange and Marshall in one of your mixes to learn how their inherent EQ fits with the bass and drums. But certainly it would be a great opportunity to compare more than just Marshall and Orange. Anyway, just another thought. Thanks so much for making this video. I'm going to go watch it a few more hundred times. Cheers!
Thanks! That's great feedback. I'll definitely do a mix clip where we compare which frequencies that are best suited to cut through the mix for a bunch of classic amps. Cheers Johan
Fascinating. I loved the Orange through the Orange cab, and the Marshall through the Marshall cab. The only combination that grated on me was the Marshall through the Orange cab. It suddenly became too strident, too harsh sounding to my ears, at least in isolation. In a mix, that cut might end up being quite useful. Another great demo, Johan!
Thanks Gregory! Yeah indeed often sounds that works in a mix are a bit harsh on their own. Cheers
great vid Johan :) i think marshall+marshall and orange+orange was the absolute best, mixing them sounded more mushy.
Thanks Mattias! Great to hear from you my friend!
Always love seeing you rock out on that cheapie Epiphone. You rock that thing like no one else
either amp into the crunchier orange cab. more of these kind of straight AB swap tests Johan please! Top man.
Thanks, I'm glad to hear that. More will be coming up!
Man, i just bought a small mesa rectifier cab but im liking these orange cabs more and more!
I prefer the orange amp into the orange cab.
Thanks Scott!
Me too!
I like the Orange amp into Orange cab best but it was pretty much a tie with the Marshall through the Orange cab. I have a 72 Orange OR120 with matching cab that has the Pulsonic G12H30 75hz speakers. Love it. Also have a 69 50 watt Marshall 1986 circuit head and 1968 bottom cab with G12M pulsonic lead cones. The 50 watt Marshall is not as loud so it gets a lil more play time but for Paul Kossoff I plug in the Orange. :) I use the same Hotplate too. Thanks Johan I have learned a lot from your video's and enjoy your playing. Even my girlfriend loves when you say "Let's go!" ;)
I remember believing that an Orange head through a Marshall cab was the best combination but now everything I thought I knew is now a lie.
I'm absolutely stunned at how much better the Orange cab sounds than the Marshall, the difference is huge and I'm blown away. The Orange cab sounds so much brighter, has more clarity, and an extra bite that just put the Marshall cab to shame.
Surprising the hard part is deciding which amp sounded better with the Orange cab. The Orange had a very lovely mid-heavy voicing that really added a nice thicker sound but the Marshall sported a nice scooped sound giving a solid low end and more clarity. At that point, the argument between which amp sounds better with the cab just comes down to how you are feeling about your midrange at the time.
I honestly can't even decide because they both each have an interesting quality to each tone that is so hard to compare in such a way to say what sounds better with the Orange cabinet.
I dug the smoother sound of the marshall cab 🤔
That Orange OR80 with the Orange cab is SO GOOD! I'm thinking of getting on Orange Cab with G12H 75hz for my OR50. I think they will do a much better job than Vintage 30's. I'd love to hear the Orange with G12H 55hz for comparison as I'm not really sure which I'd prefer. Great video as always Johan! Cheers!
Thanks Matt! I think the increased mid of 75Hz works great for Orange
Matt, I run my Orange OR50 into a 1989 Marshall 1960TV loaded with British Celestion Greenbacks. The tone is to die for both with and without the master volume engaged.
Awsome! The OR50 is a beast. I played mine once through Some 1971 G12M 75hz Greenbacks and it was great. Way better than vintage 30's. I'm really curious about the heavy magnet versions though. Cheers!
Nice comparison vid Johan.I'd be perfectly happy with any of those combinations but if I had to choose,I'd say all Orange! \m/
Thanks Clive! \m/
Marshall into a Marshall is so good I can't help but love it! Orange into a marshall has a punchy mid sound, Orange into Orange sounds dark and still has that mid punch but toned back. Orange into Marshall had an all around even tone through.
Thanks! Great feedback
I would like to see and hear what you can do with an Orange CR120 head into one of your many vintage 4X12 cabinets 😋 That would be very cool to see how you handle the solid state counter part to your vintage Orange Amps !
Yeah, I'd like to do that clip too. Cheers
Marshall and Marshall together sounded best, but the Orange into the Marshall was a close 2nd. The Orange sounds amazing too, but I prefer the tone of the Marshall a little more. That Orange I'm sure cuts in a mix though and sounded it's best into its own cab. We must have them all :-)
Thanks! ;-)
Really digging that front pickup sound. It's my favorite. ;-)
Mine too :-)
I'd love to find one of those old Orange OR80 combos. They're super rare here in the States. I feel each head sounded better with their corresponding cab.
with you playing them of course ....
Thanks Craig :-)
I’m a sucker for everything Orange amps. I have a Victory Amp with. 2x12 Orange C.A.B. ..glorious. The Marshall head on the Orange was great.
Very nice experiment. The Marshall cab made both amps have Marshall characteristics, and the Orange cab made both amps sound Orange-ish. Both amps still had their own flavor, but the cabs added more flavor.
Thanks, Yeah I think the cab is more important too.
man honestly it's a tough call, each combination of said amp/cab excels in different little sonic nuances depending on the string attack. but having to choose 1 choice would be the Marshall head into the Orange cab. looking forward to hearing your album this weekend btw, been wondering when you would put one together.
Great idea ! Thanks Johan! I think the amp has greater influence on tone. : )
Thanks Mitchell, great to hear from you! :-)
orange head and marshall cab was monster.... MONSTER!!
Thanks Steve, Yeah that had a thick big tone
FIRST!:-)
Hi, Johan! I am waiting for your appearance for 4 hours!! Because today we have terrible weather, and "SATYRICON" doing their show, but I am NOT THERE (crying:-(( But, maybe, I am too old for those metall gigs, or a little tyred), but I said to myself: relaxe, Johan shure will get out his new interesting video about something good! So, you was my doctor today. Its very hard to make decision TO STAY HOME (from metal lover like me), but outside is cold, my band members sitting home with children, and I am father too, so my son will slip with me, and we will hear your album. And... ORANGE IN MORE CRUNCHY, more DRIVER, more GAINER, but good old MARSHALL is more soulfull. With my best regards, thank you for your video! Zigfrid "Depressive home siting" W.
N.B. I shared your album on my page. Cant stop hear it! Really! My son likes it too (3 years old, but he - knows!:-)))
Hi Zigfrid! I'm so glad to hear that you listen to the album with your son. Say hi to him from me! And you're definitely not to old for a metal gig! Cheers Johan
Johan Segeborn OK!;-)
Love your playing. You got that tony iommi vibe
Thanks man, I love Tony Iommi!
Hello Johan, I ordered the or30 from Orange with the tube rectifier, as it's marketed as a 70s sounding amp and most people say it does the thing. Would you recommend the Celesion heritage g12h30 75hz or 55hz for that 70s orange hard rock tone i.e. most similar to your or80 stack, wich is my favourite stack of yours. I would appreciate your opinion!
Wow four distinct tones of rock
Awesome
Thanks Luke!
I liked best each amp into its own cab.
That Marshall head + Orange cab had an amazing bite to it. Like a perfect fusion between the two. It has a very nice mid-treble. You might've just inclined my wallet a new direction
I agree, probably my favorite of the pairings. Has an almost Jack White analog bite to it. With the right pedals it would be killer.
Orange amp + Marshall Cab! Wow!
The real winner here was the old Epi LP getting front and center.. did like the all the sounds but the marshall through the orange can was special..
I run a 10 year old Orange Rocker 30 to a Mesa Recto 2x12. Sounds amazing ;__;
Great video btw!
Thanks, glad to hear that!
I'm guessing that the old Marshall cabs were made of real wood. Just not sure of the wood. Great video as usual. Must be so nice to be able to record through these amps at a high volume :-)
Thanks, they were made by birch plywood back then too. Better quality plywood though. Cheers
That epiphone sounds fantastic.
As much as I LOVE 70's Orange, the Marshall/Marshall does it for me. Just screams Kossoff....The Orange cab/Marshall head was alittle bright for me... great stuff, and yeah, that sounded freakin loud, ( I REALLY love playing on the edge of feedback.. SO MUCH FUN!!!) but I see you had the attenuator going?? QUESTION Johan... does your 548 have a 1/4" jack like mine? or XLR? Mine is 4 pin XLR at the mic, and 1/4" jack, so plugging it in my interface, its read as an instrument, not a mic. Not much of a problem, but wondered how yours is and if you plug the 548 into something else before the interface? Thanks!!!
The Marshall Cabinet sounded like there was a blanket over it and everything seemed to suffer.. the orange seemed to want to feedback but...you were positioned more on axis with it as well... Orange for the win for me. If I want a blanket over the speaker I'll bring a blanket... I'd be putting at least one of the speakers from the orange in that Marshall Cabinet
marshall marshall is just a classic tone. though marshall amp + orange cab sounds pretty good
You need to sell stickers or something. I would buy your picks or strings or a Johan prom hat/shirt/product. Love the channel!
EQ vice it seems to me that the Cabinet has more influence, but response vice, each amp retain each own character i.e. the attack and the 'grain' of gain remains the same for each amp independent of speaker. The Marshall has a quick attack, whereas the Orange sounds a bit more laid back and fuzzier (not in a bad way but in an Orange way).
Thanks, That's a good summary of the test indeed!
This is the most Swedish accent I have ever heard. Nice video! edit: I am guessing Gothenburg, am I right?
Erik Hurtig at what points do you mean? Was it Märshall or Ärange
Wow!For me the Amp part is easy ORANGE OR80 is Sweet/The cab is a lil' more difficult but i'm leaning towards the Celestion G12M25 sounds awesome but very close.Yeah this is why when I play I like to run 2 very different Amp & Cab combination. So I'll use The Engl Fireball w/ Eminence Gov'nor & Wizard in the ENGL Cab N my Orange Rockerverb MK III w/ Celestion Vin 30's in the ppc Cab.One Compliments the other/So where one might lack/the other compensates.Light compliments DARK.The Overall sound is unique N occasionally will run Stereo outta my Chorus To my Peavy classic 50 to add that Swirly ping pong thing.Excellent Demo as usual Johan...
I like the square one!
I like Orange on Orange the best. That said, I think they both sound best into their own cabs.
Johan, have you ever considered making a video showing the effects of speaker break in? A cool video would be taking a single or quad set of new speakers recording them fresh out of the box. Then beat the shit out of them by playing through them loudly for some time. After they have been broken in, record them and compare the difference. You would be the perfect guy to do this!
either amp with Orange cab - well done
Thanks Eddie!
Today I learned that I like Orange. I like how it’s crispy and bright.
Orange seem to be more mid-rangey. Both sound great, but I like the Marshall to Marshall setup..
Hi John, just can't get enough of your videos, Can you tell my about your Headphones?
Hi! Those are AKG K109s Headphones and ear defenders
Glad you like the videos! Cheers Johan
The Orange amp into the Orange Cab, but I do like the Marshall amp through the Orange cab. The Celestion G12H-30's make a difference as well.
Is that a guitar with a single p-90? Kind of a l.p. Jr? By the orange into Orange seems like a better hard rock tone. Which I find surprising. Great work as always.
My favorite chord: 1:04 the first one after the intro, every time!!
Thanks my friend! :-)
I actually really liked the Marshall into the orange cab - just take a little bit off the top of the Marshall brightness.
Thanks, thats probably great in a dense mix
I really liked the orange into the Marshall cab. Not as trebley as the other combos.
Thanks, yeah that had a fat cool tone
Hey Johan… love watching all your videos… so much that you inspired me to get a Marshall code which I like so much that I ordered myself an older mg100hdfx head for my house. I don’t play gigs or anything and I’m a beginner/amateur player that just plays at home for fun.. what cabinet would you recommend I get for the best value? MG , MX, Origin…? I Found a mg cab for couple hundred bucks but should I just spend an extra 150 and get an origin cab ? I’m torn !! Lol any suggestions would be appreciated because I know you’re intelligent with this stuff! Take care and Rock on 🤘🏼
Hi! Really good to hear that. I think those cabs will have similar performance. I think a second hand 1960 cab will be a step up for similar money though. Cheers
@@JohanSegeborn thanks buddy !! I ended up finding an MG 4x12 for 250$ shipped so it’s supposed to be here today!! My first big boy amp!! Super excited!! This is gonna be addicting !! I can see why you’re always tinkering around w stuff to get some killer tones! It’s fun to watch !
Assuming I have the order correct of first Marshall with Marshall, second marshall head to orange cab, third orange/orange, and fourth orange head to marshall cab? My favorite was the Orange amp into the Orange cab. #2 Marshall amp into the orange cab. The orange cab has a chunkier grunt to it that the marshall doesn't. Also, the OR80 into the orange cab had some really really nice even order harmonics happening and it just wanted to sing for you. The marshall wanted to feed back to, but in a less musical way to my ears. The orange into the marshall cab sounded very much like the marshall into the marshall cab...lots of bite, but less musical for me. I would run both the marshall cab and the orange cab with either head to get the best of both worlds. In fact, that combination was, and still is very popular with touring hard rock guitarists. I'm sold on the H30-75 speaker over the greenback. That said, recorded tone is not live tone, so I suspect on stage, the marshall cab would cut through everything better and be more present to the player.
Thanks Colin, great feedback. Cheers Johan
All voicing sound amazing and special. This is what stereo is for. I will say I love 55hz.. at times 75hz gets a little to chimey for my taste
A little more open clarity on the Marshall amp with the Orange cab vs the Orange with Orange but still like that Orange cab best. I think both the amp and cab matter equally. The Orange cab is a lil more bright and open sounding to me.
Johan would you do some research on the Germino 55LV - I think its the best amp I've ever owned Greg has been around for many years recreating Marshall's from the early 68- 70's, mine has the master volume and SS and tube rectifier switch. Thanks John
Hi, I'll keep that one in mind. Germino makes amazing amps. I demoed the Massonette in this clip
m.ua-cam.com/video/SeL25mbC8lc/v-deo.html
Cant decide - both sound awesome - I prefer Marshall for lead tones - Orange more for rythym ! Both amps in a band would be perfect !
Thanks, Yeah they fit nicely together in a mix. Cheers Johan
Orange amp into Marshall- was a monster! ?? What would Hendrix use now? Then that's my favorite.
Marshall amps and Orange cabs! That’s what I got from this vid.
Looks like a THD hot plate was being used. Curious as to what the settings were?
Hi, It was -8dB on the 100W Marshall and -4dB on the 50W Orange.
Johan Segeborn all I know is they sounded awesome. I think I prefer the Marshall into the Orange cab. The Orange/Orange combo was amazing.
Another great one!
I liked them in the following order: M amp into M cab, M amp into O cab, O amp into O cab. ...But O amp into M cab I did not really like.
Marshall head into Marshall cab sounds the best.
I think it's both / and. The OR sounds like an OR through either cab, and the SL through the OR cab sounds just a bit more nasally. I think the SL / Marshall cab is less "distinct" than the OR combination (in a good way, I think).
Thanks!
you forgot both cabs simultaneously..that would be magic
Where do you play, if I might ask? Is it a sound-proofed space away? Like a garage or rehearsal space?
Yeah this is in a rehersal spaces complex. Cheers
Johan can you do a video comparing the volume of a Vox AC30 vs JTM 45
Hi George! Yeah absolutely. I think a JTM45 with a 4x12 with G12M Greenbacks is basically as loud as a 2x12 AC30 combo since they're the same power and the Alnicos are probably twice as loud as the G12M. If the 4x12 was G12H equipped, it would be twice as loud as the AC30 though. Cheers
Hello. Any info on ohms both heads and cabs?
Hi Both Cabs are 16ohm. Running the amps on 16 too
It's interesting to me how each amp sounds best (to me, at least) into its own brand of cab and a little muddy into the other brand. (Although that last riff sounded great through the Marshall into either cab.) I wouldn't have thought that would be the case. I previously thought that one cab would be brighter (or darker or whatever), period, but it turned out not to be true. Fascinating.
Does the Marshall cab have more interior volume, I wonder?
Thanks, the Orange cab is the bigger one actually, I think the volume is about 10% bigger. I go through the dimensions at the end of this clip:
ua-cam.com/video/iIgRGI4aRxw/v-deo.html
Pay close attention to the Marshall amp and cab throughout, the image is distorting when he plays!
Yeah, the camera wasn't fixed, so it picked up my stomping :-)
1) Marshall with Marshall cab
2) Marshall with Orange cab
3) Orange with Orange cab
4) Orange with Marshall cab
My vote....Marshal Amp with Orange Cab.
Marshall amp and Orange amp is the best combo.
Thanks! ;-)
I liked them all and therefore would play ´em in stereo!
Cheers! ;-)
