    Well done! When extiction rebellion comes to South Africa (the largest N02 polluter in the world), I will gladly swarm where needed. Petitions and asking nicely are not enough and we are in a very desperate situation. We must do what we can to save the planet. If Nelson Mandela was prepared to die for frreedom, then swarming for our future is a small sacrifice to pay.

      You are extinction rebellion in South Africa and I there are lots of others with you. But take care of your own context.

    On Swarming: Basic instructions for Swarm Cooperation.
    (this was actually used first in festivals to clean up without leaders or teams. So not adapted yet towards XR, but perhaps helpful to decide attitudes and making it work together.)
    So we decided to try Swarm leadership, although then I called it ‘Intelligent Ant design’. How does it work? We gathered the volunteers and shared the following principles:
    1. We first shared the vision of the desired result. How should it look when we all would be ready?
    2. Everyone is told very clear, what needs to go where. What is most important now and what is less so. So clear hierarchy of objectives, not in people.
    3. Everyone is asked to act like a smart ant. ‘If you see a job, its yours.’ Fill up the neglects of all others. Don't complain for things forgotten, seek to make it work of all.
    4. Help everyone who can’t do something alone first. Thus less people aren't doing anything or waiting for others.
    5. Accept and ask help when needed on an equal level. There is no ownership of any job, unless specified by the facilitators. Admit that some people may have more experience than you in certain things. Trust those.
    6. You are ready when we all are ready.
    7. Then have some ‘smart’ roles. Some people handled incoming goods in a big tent, they separated all the little stuff in easy to find ways. There was someone where you could bring or get jobs if you couldn’t see or handle them yourself anymore. And I was walking the field to nudge people a bit in the right direction. I would whisper things like: “That shovel was on loan from the neighbor, could you bring it there, please?”

    Are there any flyers available to pass to drivers? I can pay if necessary, or print myself.

    Swarming- what is the policy on filming? If the idea is to disappear back into the crowd, having everyones face recorded is probably not a good idea?

    I've heard that Ghandi realized horses won't trample people if they are lying down. I'm not sure if this is still true, horses may have been trained successfully to do this.

    Is it a good idea to have a few people as "The Usual Suspects?" That in itself could be risky but errors made by the Police are in essence could be a boon.

    How to survive the worldwide starvation crisis caused by Peak Oil;
    "What can I do"?
    According to the experts you should:
    1. Garden with sustainable agriculture techniques (less pesticides and fertilizer (organic or better yet permaculture)).
    2. Buy food and manufactured goods made locally
    3. Pay down debt
    4. Learn skills they will be useful in the future and make friends that have useful skills you don't have (related to providing food, water, shelter, and medical care. A necessary skill is organic/permaculture gardening/farming). Very important: medical plant and medical skills are the best way to ensure your survival. All others will gladly sacrifice their life to protect your life, so you are around to use your medical knowledge to keep their families alive.
    5. I recommend to invest some money into technologies to increase the "carrying capacity" of the planet (high risk investments);
    A. decrease environmental impact per capital
    B. alternatives for our food system input to improve production
    C. alternatives to our current living arrangements,
    D. alternatives to our plastics industry,
    E. alternatives to disaster capitalism
    F. "Savior technologies", ie faster-than-light travel, "game changer" technologies, ie Cold fusion energy & "delaying technologies", ie deep drilling technologies.
    6. I also recommend you inform and prepare your family, friends, and others. It is best to initially suggest people have an emergency kit... for any emergency such as flood, earthquake, tornado, hurricane, loss of electricity due to a winter storm. Then, if the friend or relative puts together a disaster kit, what I do is introduce Peak Oil (by telling them of the 43 second movie trailer m.natgeotv.com/ca/2210-thecollapse/videos/collapse-of-earth , the "National Geographic Collapse" movie on UA-cam, & free book downloads;
    7. For the truly motivated, a community based organization to mitigate Climate Change and Peak Oil is: www.transitionus.org/
    (For non USA; transitionnetwork.org/)
    Google "2052 free book summary download", & "Plan C".

    (Once again, I just cannot believe I have to say this stuff!)
    "Sitting down in roads is illegal. You are encouraging people to break the law and risk arrest. Being arrested leads to charges of obstructing the highway and obstructing the police.
    This would not be the case if you would be moving, however slowly.
    If people sit down, as you suggest, they will be arrested and have a criminal record which will limit their employment possibilities and could even lead to loss of home, kids, partners and future prospects.
    Stop the City tried it in the 80s - the ringleaders were rounded up and chemically coshed on remand in prison or they were sectioned and chemically coshed during an indeterminable incarceration.
    You are young. You maybe don't have activist experience and so your methods may strike you as novel or new. THEY ARE NOT. They have been tried repeatedly. Anti frackers are blocking roads every day at sites around Britain. Did you consult with them about your ideas?
    Obviously not.
    They would have told you the truth. If you sit or lay down in a road you are immediately arrested for obstruction. Even if you do move extremely slowly you are utilising your right to peacefully protest but then the police will give you a five step process.
    This entails being asked to step off the road and onto the pedestrian pathway.
    If you do not do as you are asked on the 5th time of asking you will be arrested.
    I hope everyone who is thinking of joining your campaign reads this.
    Us old activists know a thing or two.
    You newbies have a lot to learn."

      In 80's Greenham protests we used zebra crossings - small groups of people walking slowly and incessantly across them. As zebra crossings give right of way to pedestrians, theoretically, you can't be arrested. Like the idea above, do it for several minutes, have a break, go back or move on to the next crossing... be sure to have a back-up group of people talking to drivers and passers-by. I like the 'give out cake idea'...

      Frances Leader - Keep Calm & Carry On
      It’s not called Extinction Rebellion for nothing. This organisation has asked for willing volunteers to participate in activities that will probably result in arrests, detainment, fines, and in extreme cases short prison terms.
      They have been very up front and this isn’t about singular separate issues ( Fracking IS important and worthwhile protesting), it’s about the impending planetary disaster we are sleep walking into with the great having good intentions and kind words while the world burns, thirsts, freezes, floods, drowns and war itself to near oblivion.

      Frances Leader According to your Twitter account you think climate change is fake and the UN sustainable development goals are a communist plot to take over the world? Thanks, I think I prefer to stay in the reality based community.

      I don't think the activists that I saw on Bridges yesterday can be called newbies. Many were much older and wiser than you. Your comments are matronising to say the least. Of course it is illegal! This is the point. Our successive Governments are partaking in acts of evil. Waging illegal wars. Locking up hundreds of thousands of children from poor and ethnic minority backgrounds in our jails. Allowing multi-billionaire criminals to launder their money through the City of London. Torture in hidden jails around the world. The selling off of all public services to profit driven corporations. The list goes on. In the face of such evil and wilful annihilation of our planet by the privileged few, what would you suggest? Perhaps you should be supporting us instead of this somewhat arrogant put down. Why not come and share your wisdom in a way that is helpful to overthrow the system instead of preaching from your dusty perch.
