Mehmed Fatih's greatest challenge lay in the mountainous backwater of Albania. What should have been a flash in the pan rebellion of a past hostage of the Ottomans turned into a multi decade slogging match on par with the modern conflicts in Vietnam or Afghanistan. George Kastrioti, or Skanderbeg as he is more commonly known, would win 13 consecutive battles over the course of 25 years that would cost the Ottomans more than 100,000 casualties. Bro thats what make skenderbeg turn back to albania. Kruja is one of the best places where you can make a castle and resist. His father send leters to Skenderbeg many times till he lisent to him after his father told him Kurja can be undefeated if someone like you protect it.

His mother ( Skanderbeg )came from the Muzaka family (Albanian) and not from the Brankovic family ...
Father was Gjon Kastrioti, son of Pal Kastrioti. Mother was Voisava from the Muzaka-Family (as stated in the memoires of Gjon Muzaka written sometime before 1510)
Documents from that time only state that she was an albanian.
There are no serbian documents that state she was serbian. In his memoires Gjon Muzaka (before 1510) wrote that she is a muzaka.
We only have two sources from that era that give us a hint of her origin. One is geographically and the other is ethnically .

barleti wrote that it was from polog. Member of a noble house and tribal leader.
Why tribal and not Serbian?
First of all, the triballi were an ancient Thraco-Illyrian ( Albanian ) tribe.
The same name was again used in the Middle Ages / Byzantine era for the inhabitants of the ancient tribal area.
All the people who lived in this area were called triballi (Albanians, Bulgarians and Serbs).
(And let's not forget that the Tribalians were Slavised for the majority ...
But remained Thraco-Illyrian/Albanian in their blood ...)
Today, the majority of Albanians in Macedonia live in the Polog region (the eastern part of Macedonia).
Exemple :
Appianus Alexandrinus (is a Greek historien of the Roman period) who qualified the Triballians of "Illyrian origin".

Stephanus of Byzantium ( Great lexicographer of Constantinople, lived in the 6 th century), was written in the year 528-545, declares that the "Triballians are Illyrian.

Other authors such as Strabo, Pliny, Ptolemy and Dion Cassius, state that the Triballians are of Thraco-Illyrian origin ( Pelasgians/Albanian )
Ethnical source:
Gjon Muzaka wrote in his memoires that she was a muzaka.
I think with the latter source we should conclude this whole discussion.
As it is a very close source - chronological and physical. The person in this case Gjon Muzaka knew Voisava personally and he fought besides Skanderbeg and skanderbegs son.
So he wouldnt dare to write something he would later regret right ? He wrote those memoires sometime before 1510 so basically before the book of barleti was printed.

Those were both GREEK kings. Not Albanians, or Illyrians. He's not their successor, nor are any Albanians. The people of ancient Epirus were clearly Greek. That's no different than ottomans claiming to be the successors of the Byzantine Empire. They're foreigners with no connection to those people other than occupying some of the land.

@@HikmaHistory that's true nobody really knows but malaria is a pretty damn good guess, with some evidence for it.
@@HikmaHistory He died from fever / ilness, like the guy stated possibly malaria, as-well, but we do know he died from being sick. His remains are unknown because it was stolen when they were being transported to Greece to be buried there by Ptolmey who buried him in Alexandria. We know during the Roman period that his body was still in Alexandria because Julius Caesar visited it, along with future Roman Emperors. However, it was during the height of the ancient Roman Empire when the body / tomb itself went missing, possibly transported never to be seen again.

Good video. Skanderbeg is something of an obscure figure in Western Europe. I've read books about the the Wallachian wars against the Ottomans, and he is not even mentioned in some of them. That needs to change!

There wasn't any Albanian-Sqipetar ethnic identity until the late 19th century. Albania (or Arberia or Arvanon) was simply a geographical term. In what is now Albania Orthodox Christians in the south considered themselves Greeks. Muslims self-identified as Turks. Only the few Catholics of the north started having some sort of a separate Latin identity during the Middle Ages, but again mostly based on their religious distinctiveness from other neighboring populations and later with the Ottoman conquest of the area and the huge conversion rate to Islam even there it atoned and disappeared.
Schmitt, one of the most acknowledged modern expert scholars on Albanian studies, supports that ALL THROUGHT THE MIDDLE AGES AND THE OTTOMAN ERA "Albanian" or "Arvanitis" was simply a GENERIC AND NOT ETHNIC term and didn't necessarily refer only to the speakers of Albanian dialects but even to the numerous Greek-speakers or Vlach-speakers that resided in the geographic area of Arvanon. It even came to refer to Armed Units which were composed not only by Albanian speakers but also by Greek speakers, Slavic speakers etc.

The Greek revolution of 1821 was the incident that cracked the Ottoman Empire and led to the Ottoman departure from the Balkans. Between the Fall of Constantinople and the formation of the Kingdom of Greece, there were upwards of 70 revolutions against the Ottomans. Albanians were nowhere to be found in these battles and they mostly fought with the Ottomans against Christians, be that Greeks or Serbs. The same happened with the Italian Fascists and later with the Nazis. Albanians have always been on the wrong side of history, and they are keenly aware of it. Exactly the opposite of the Greeks. That is why Albanians get nervous around Greeks. Greeks know history. His name is not Skanderbey or whatever the Turks call him. His name was Georgios Kastriotis. Not Ilyr or Alban.

The Ottoman devsirme system, which was seriously glossed over here, was the forced recruitment of Christian children from the Balkans. These children were forced to convert to Islam and while they could rise to senior level admin roles, like Vizier, they were much more often used to build up the military than anything else. This may have been discussed in previous videos but I'm sure many are tuning in for the first time.

Part answered: I know France and England just concluded their 100 years wars and was broken, and Germany was in trouble with harsh internal conflict but what about everywhere else?
They did try (see Nicopolis & Varna Crusades). But bear in mind that coordinating alliance-based military activity is very, very difficult. Also some European nations did not necessarily view it as that big a threat to them (those that were far away, e.g. England).
