I'll add to that; Thile literally didn't know he would even be jamming with Joe and Corey until a few minutes before they went on; he didn't even know what song they would be playing. What you see is pure, raw improvisation between 3 incredibly talented musicians.
I finished watching Chris Thile playing Bach Sonatas, then changed it up with a mid-2000s Austin City Limits tape of Dolly Parton, and guess who is shredding mandolin? A babyfaced Chris Thile. He transcends time and genre.
If he doesn’t know Chris thile and loves vulf you have to make him react to smile meditation live at Madison square garden!!! Specially if you haven’t heard it either, it’s amazing!!!!
This is hands down my favorite version of Dean Town, and probably my favorite thing I've heard out of Vulfpeck in general. I dig Vulf a lot, but I find that a lot of their music can be a little on the formulaic side, and Chris Thile adds this improvisational element to the equation that really lets the Vulf guys stretch outside of their usual thing. (And don't get me wrong, Vulf's stuff may be formulaic, but it's a damn good formula and I definitely dig their music.) Chris Thile really is on another level though. Man is a genius, and hands down one of the most versatile musicians on the planet. He was one of the musicians at the first GroundUp Music Festival (Snarky Puppy's festival), and within a 6 hour stretch or so I saw him do his own set, which was a straight-up bluegrass duo with Michael Davies, followed by sitting in with Snarky Puppy and taking the feature Cory Henry solo spot on Lingus, followed by playing a tune with Harry Shearer/Derek Smalls on his late night Spinal Tap set. He crushed everything. Man can play literally anything with literally anyone and fit in seamlessly and it blows my mind.
I’m with you, Mr. Bressner (should have looked in these comments earlier). Bireli was Jaco’s guitarist back in the day and did this one some years ago: ua-cam.com/video/S4vPfJenLiI/v-deo.html. Not a 1-1, of course, but I hear a fair amount of Jaco in Joe Dart’s solos. Maybe he will take out a fretless one day (if he hasn’t already).
Lol dude I was front row at this gig.. got last minute returns with 3 of my best friends... check out the whole show, Cory solos and battles Chris during a talking heads song, Maggie Rogers sings hide and seek by Imogen Heap. Funniest thing about this is that comedian Chris Gethard had to immediately follow this. Poor guy
"Dude, you don't know Chris Thile in the back?" "I do not" " *prepare yourself* " I love your reactions. It's so nice to see experienced musicians show excitement like a little child listening to it the first time
Yay!!! I'm so happy you reacted to that very specific video because the first time I watched it I was floored by the alchemy between those guys! This is crazy! I love the way you enjoy it too! Seriously, can't get enough of Vulf'! ...by the way, have you already heard the "Christmas in L.A." cover by Home Free? No guitar in it of course, it's an a capella combo, but the amount of fun and bliss is delicious!
Mike!!! Skies the limit on this niche you found here. Today, Bass Player, Tomorrow, drummer, later in the future, hammer and dulcimer player...DUDE! Its all you MAN! Your knowledge and skills are top notch, but in the end, ITS YOU!! Keep it up Bro!! Side note: Your intro on the REACT video to Mark Lettieri, Guitar Teacher REACTS: "Can't Wait for Perfect" Bob Reynolds Guitar Band (Mark Lettieri) LIVE...🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😮😮😮😮. These short nuggets dont get enough love. Would love to see a quic REACT just on the details of your thinking in that moment. You got a lifetime subccriber here sir, even if I cant pay for now. I will in the future, because... ITS YOU MAN!!
Exactly! What you just said! I second that! Mike brings us so much joy, it's so pleasant to have him enjoying music the way he does, it's contagious...
Michael - Thanks for posting. I'm a big fan of Live From Here. One thing to point out is that both Jack Stratton and Theo Katzman are clapping themselves and keeping the audience in time.
They are an accessible “musician’s music” band... their technical prowess and groove is what attracts musicians to them, but none of their music sounds like it would turn off the lay listener, the groove brings them in too... all of that to say that it does not surprise me one bit that the audience is clapping on time - many in the audience are likely musicians too! If you see their MSG concert, Theo asked the audience to hold a droning C and it WAS. ON. PITCH!
Am I a guitarist who also plays bass? Or a bass player who plays a bunch of guitar licks? Doing both improves my overall musicality and fretting abilities. Knowledge is gushing out of this lesson. Please have both of you do more projects together, all significant genres.
Hey Michael! Dude, have you ever seen a brazilian classic guitarist Yamandu Costa? He plays a 7 nylon string with all his soul. You should check him out. I think he will blow your mind... 😅
Michael, Big fan of the react videos and the breakdowns. In my neverending quest to spread some math rock love here's a couple you may find interesting (if not for Reacts, just for fun!): TTNG - If I Sit Still, Maybe I'll Get Out of Here - Audiotree Live (Check the modified 6 string bass!) Tiny Moving Parts - Always Focused - Audiotree Live Tricot - they have an Audiotree session that's great but this live one is killer tricot「 爆裂パニエさん」(大反射祭Tour/2019.04.28 at TSUTAYA O-EAST)UA-cam Ver.
Tripped me out when you said Ellicott City. Been watching you for a while a didn't realize you lived about an hour away (Harford County)! Love the videos. However, watch Woody's video on the dean town chords he wrote. He breaks down the chords, which are very clever. They're not all major. It's def F#m, C#m, E, B. More specifically, the exact tonalities reflect something like this: F#m13 (dorian), C#m11 (aeolian), E9 (mixolydian), B (Ionian). Don't believe me, believe the writer! Regardless, great video as always, Mike.
How has no one commented that the F sharp and C sharp are minor seventh chords??? Huge fan of yours Michael and you can check out Woody Goss’ (the composer of the song) Dean Town tutorial to learn that.
Mr Palmisano, I respect you greatly, and normally I don't have a dog in the fight as I've never played guitar, but I'm a percussionist, (well to be fair, more drummer anymore than percussionist as I avoid mallets and keys).... and the note change in the song, at least in the first measures you two were playing is definitely on the beat not the "E" of the the sixteenth note as you guys were playing it. It does have grace notes leading into the change later on in the song but it settles on the down beat not after still.... Respect the heck out of you sir, but as a stickler for rhythm it was actually making me cringe the way you guys were playing it... lol
You should check out some more Stevie Ray Vaughn, I know you're a huge fan! Lenny and Riviera Paradise are two great tunes by him that not a ton of people know, and they really showcase his versatility. They've got a much more laid back, sweeter style compared to most of his stuff.
Don't just put the inserted video ontop of the original video. Anything that comes in front of the computer screen gets taken out. Maybe use a green/chroma fill on the screen behind you next time.
Dean town is actually a reference to Weather Reports “Teen Town”
As a mandolinist myself I’d love to see you cover more of Chris Thiles stuff dudes unreal.
Michael Kang too.
I'll add to that; Thile literally didn't know he would even be jamming with Joe and Corey until a few minutes before they went on; he didn't even know what song they would be playing. What you see is pure, raw improvisation between 3 incredibly talented musicians.

So many great performances on Live from Here. You could do a year's worth of reactions just from that show.
You tell me that bassline isn't snagged from "Do That Stuff" by PFUNK. 5:30 timestamp.
That Ghosts performance by Big Wreck that you reacted to has something similar also at the beginning
Bootsy Collins right there. 😎🇭🇲
I always thought thought Dean Town was ripped from Weather Reports Teen Town - Jaco's basslines.
I’m with you, Mr. Bressner (should have looked in these comments earlier). Bireli was Jaco’s guitarist back in the day and did this one some years ago: ua-cam.com/video/S4vPfJenLiI/v-deo.html. @Peter Bedrosian agreed, there are similarities but it's more riffing on a theme than a copy
I love everything about this video. The musicians, the song, the commentary and even the tangents. Thank you micheal!!!!
Good to see someone else appreciating how funky this rendition of dean town is. Chris thile and vulf totally get eachothers vibe
💯
Love it! Keep up the bass content!
Chris Thile I think has the record for most appearances on NPR's Tiny Desk by an individual
Totally hit the link and subscribed! Thank you Michael!
Why am I getting blessed with all my favorite live performances this week? So sick man.
Poor guy
Finally someone else mentions the P-Funk line he did!
"Dude, you don't know Chris Thile in the back?"
"I do not"
" *prepare yourself* "
I love your reactions. It's so nice to see experienced musicians show excitement like a little child listening to it the first time
awesome format
Cool Video. So nice to hear you and a bass player together. Hell anyone together these days. I love the standup bass in the background.
Nice video--- Been into these masters for years

The F# and C# are minor chords - the minor 3rd is in the melody for both
Please do more songs from the Vulfpeck live at MSG show, one of if not the best live show ever!!
YES SIR!
Gotta hand it to Michael for introducing me to Vulfpeck!
Waited so long for this... :)
"And they're clapping on time! "
... NPR ladies and gentleman.

Thanks Captain! Yes I'm going to start doing those. I realize I don't share nearly enough of my own stuff :)
Nice jamming! It really sounds great! :)
Freaking superb video.
Best youtube channel ever
I like this guys energy, def sub'd

Awesome
Wow Mike. You not playing a PRS. Nice Stratocaster!👍✌🎸🎶🎵
OH YES
This is what I was going to say. Everyone is going to be like, "Michael playing a...STRAT?!" Hahaha.
First thing I thought too. Never seen you play a strat. Love it.
Loved your chemistry :)
B. B. King - The Thrill Is Gone (Live at Montreux version). Thank you :)
SRV Texas Flood live at the McCombo!!
Be sure to check out the Dublin performance of dean town!
good times
Am I a guitarist who also plays bass? Or a bass player who plays a bunch of guitar licks? Doing both improves my overall musicality and fretting abilities.
Knowledge is gushing out of this lesson. Please have both of you do more projects together, all significant genres.
I'd love to!
Been playing bass for a bit. Currently leaning guitar. Really looking forward to how both will influence each other🤘🏿
The chuckle at the beginning lol
Not sure if it was brought up in the comments but the song/riff was written by Woody (keys)
You want one of the greatest live performances ever? Little Feat Waiting for Columbus
Ellicott City! I wonder if I've seen you guys in person before
Chances are HIGH
Nice man. Respect for the P-funk!!
If you want to hear more funk mandolin, check out Chris's playing on Cory Wong's "Bluebird". Killer tune!
I think you would enjoy Birdtalker!
Your cursor matches their outfits.
The "salute" in the thumbnail was an odd choice.
They drag by the end, I still love it, but they do drag in the end
Hey Michael! Dude, have you ever seen a brazilian classic guitarist Yamandu Costa? He plays a 7 nylon string with all his soul. You should check him out. I think he will blow your mind... 😅
"Nothing against the pick"
Davie504: "WAHT?"
Slap!!!!
That's illegal, I am calling the police!
I find it hard to believe a musician could talk through a “first listen” of that

Tricot is great! I'd love to see a video about them

Get an audience filled with Vulfpeck and Punch Brothers fans, and I guarantee you that you get people clapping in time.
alternate universe for the green arrow........
Would be cool watch a jam vídeo like Marty Friedman with Char
Mike, please review Stuff’s Stuff by Stuff, Live at Montreux
that thumbnail is really somthing
All chords are not dom7. F# and C#( first 2 chords in progression) are minor.
Thumbnail is effed up dude.
White powder
btw *POP QUIZ* Who actually wrote Dean Town?
How did they find an audience that can keep time? That can't be real. Lol 😃
Sounds kinda like unfunky UFO by P-Funk
I really like Chris Thile, but still, the Madison Square Garden version with 14,000 people singing along blows this one out of the water.
How has no one commented that the F sharp and C sharp are minor seventh chords??? Huge fan of yours Michael and you can check out Woody Goss’ (the composer of the song) Dean Town tutorial to learn that.
Might be borrowing from Jaco a bit too. This is Bireli, yes, but he played guitar for Jaco back in the day: ua-cam.com/video/S4vPfJenLiI/v-deo.html
Also his version of the Kenny Burrell classic Chitlins Con Carne
@@ronsheehan Yeppp! or just do Kenny's version, it's a killer as well.
Joe Dirt on bass
lol they are not all donimnant chords. Listen again :P the actual chords are: F#m7 - C#m7 - E9 - B9
Half of the views on that video are probably mine.
Don't just put the inserted video ontop of the original video. Anything that comes in front of the computer screen gets taken out. Maybe use a green/chroma fill on the screen behind you next time.
I'm not great on theory, but is your discussion about the ambiguity of the 3rd in blues related to this? ua-cam.com/video/DVvmALPu5TU/v-deo.html
Bro..try to check video @alip_ba_ta..he's fingerstyle..👍👍☕☕☕..
Joe seems to have a shiton of influences that he expresses all the time...see any Beastly solo. But this song is mostly a reference to Teen Town.
you guys the f# is has a minor third
