  • Woom 3 - my daughter's first pedal bike. Today I surprise my daughter with her first pedal bike, the Woom 3. Woom makes lightweight, high quality kids bikes with some amazing features: no sharp bolts or corners, hand brakes, ultralight frame, small sized grips, pneumatic tires, anti-spin handlebars, a quick release seat, and quality construction. Are you looking for a quality bike for a kid in your life?

update: Woom has a recall/fix for handlebars/stems for select models. Apparently the one-bolt stems weren't clamping strong enough. Neither of the bikes in this video are affected, but here's the info I found:
The affected bikes were sold between 2018 and 2021.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the stems on the affected bikes have one silver bolt to clamp onto the steerer tube. That bolt, if it becomes loose, can cause the handlebar assembly to come apart.
The bikes were sold in six versions, in various colors. All of the bikes have the word "woom" in white letters on the sides of the frame, and the word is also visible in metalic letters on the front of the bikes.
    woom 1
    woom 1 Plus
    woom 2
    woom 3
    woom 4
    woom 5
    woom 6
The company urged buyers to stop allowing children to use the bikes and to contact them for a free repair kit

I recently bought a secondhand orbea mx24 dirt for $50 for my 6 year old. It was in a pretty worn state so I stripped it down to the bare frame, got about $300 in parts (wheels, tyres, ms acolyte, rim brakes and levers, cables) and build it back up. I would love to give it a new paint job but right now it's already a fantastic bike. For the money I could have just bought a brand new one but the bike tinkering was absolutely worth it!

My son got the balance part figured out, but not the pedalling. I saw someone post on IG using some 2X4s to make a stand to support the bike from the bottom bracket. Then a parent holds the handlebars while the kid rode the bike like a stationary bike. It worked great for my 4 year old. He rode as a stationary bike for a few minutes and got comfortable with pedalling. A few minutes later, he started riding on his own!

    Sweet little bike!
Our oldest is autistic, and it took us a long time to teach him to ride -he still doesn't use brakes or gears.
One trick we used to teach him to pedal was to zip tie the cassette to the spokes so it was a fixie, then strapped his shoes to the pedals.
While supporting him (not free pedalling, that would have gone poorly!) we rolled him around a park so that he would figure out that forward motion made his feet go 'round.
We only had to do this a couple of times for 10 minutes or so before he got the hang of pedalling.
Now that he is 18 we still ride with him, and he loves to pedal hard!
Still not braking, so I attach a paddle board leach from his seat to my stem
Still not shifting, so I got him Axis GX derailleur and keep it on my bars. Range seems to be about 50ft!
We'll do a 14km singletrack loop in an hour, which is a pretty good pace!

Best video yet! (I am a bit biased because I have two daughters, but they're college age now.) I taught my girls by using a bent metal tube inserted above the seatstay bridge down to the BB, then zipped tied it to the backside of the seat tube. This kept me from having to bend over while walking along side, I just held onto the top of the tube and could let go or grab w/o them even noticing.

Ooooh, Steve, my man, this one had me smiling the whole time from start to finish. Kids really are the meaning of life. She's such an adorable little honey 😄 I don't have a daughter but I have a son that turns 18 in mid November. Man, those years since he was your daughters age just flew by. He was 3 1/2 when one day he saw a bunch of 10-year-olds ride by our house and he pointed at them saying to my wife (unfortunately I was working my afternoon shift that week) "I wanna ride like them"! So my wife undid the support wheels (I don't know the English term) and what do you know - he kracked the code in no-time and in less than half an hour later he was riding just like those 10-year-olds 🥰 Kids - masters of learning new skills 😍

LOL I loved seeing this! My first two wheeler was a yellow '74 Schwinn Pixie...33 lbs! It's cool to see how far things have come even with kid's bikes. I really wish more people would buy their kids quality bikes and a high volume second handmarket established. It sucks to see like an 8 y.o with a dropped chain pushing their bike home.

Saw your fundraiser for Operation Underground Railroad. Thanks for helping to bring attention to this issue! We've got to bring this to an end!!! I just saw the trailer for "The Sound of Freedom". Super scary and heartbreaking stuff... Hard to believe that this could be happening. Jordan Peterson had a good interview with the former border patrol agent the movie is based on and the actor that plays him.
