Comparison and review of Ridgid's new 18 volt brushed compact vacuum and the 3 year old(new for the comparison) brushless 18volt wet/dry compact vac.

1. Old one looks better to me.
2. Both models need the pre-filter removed.
3. Cleaning the normal filter on the old one couldn't be easier. Take it out, smack it against the bucket or ground, pop it back in. The new one looks like a pain in the ass to quickly clean it.
4. The floor tool works great on the old one and the new one looks like it is one of those tools that doesn't create suction unless you get the angle just right.
5. I would throw it out the window after the first time of taking the extension wand off and it dumping the contents on my clean floor. Let alone if it did it when I ran out of battery and couldn't clean up the mess the vacuum just made for me.

Thanks for the comments! I twisted the canister off this afternoon and dumped saw dust all over the place. Ugh! And your right, cleaning this filter makes a mess... I think ridgid is trying to copy the makita designs... (and now sub compact drill/ impact)
I use the Dyson cordless vacuums occasionally at work. The old Ridgid vacuum that I bought was pathetic in comparison so I took it back about a month after buying it. It looks like the newer model still has a ways to go (likely brushless or something with more power) before I buy one. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It has saved me the time, headache, and product waste of trying out the new one.

The old one i returned it next day, because is way too loud !!
The new one is smaller, much less loud and the same power.... so that is the one !!

Great review, as an Electrician,I face the same tasks you have described. I have the old vac and it was terrible, thought the new one might be better, but I didn't think to just remove the prefilter! Just saved me $145 CAD. Awesome review. Subscribed based on this video!

It looked like the new one had decent suction power with the pre-filter removed, but struggled picking up all of the dust as quickly as the old version. I feel from watching the video, that the new vacuum may have done a better job with the floor attachment that comes with the older vacuum. Have you tried swapping the old floor attachment onto the wand of the new tool?

What you are calling the pre filter on the older vacuum from what I understand is only meant to be used for wet applications to protect the filter from water. just like how you change to a wet filter in a normal shop vac.
The owner's manual calls it the pre-filter and says to clean it with water, make sure it's completely dry before reinstalling. It can't be installed by itself, the pleated filter has the gasket that seals the canister... I agree with you, it would work better if using it for wet applications. Thanks for the comment!
This style vacuum really needs a cyclonic dust chamber for the filters to stay unclogged for any reasonable amount of time. Makita sells an add-on unit (may work on other models, not sure), but they want ~$50 for the chamber, it's bulky, and adds a fair amount of weight to the overall unit. I wish one of the big tool brands would design a cordless stick vacuum with a built in cyclonic chamber, a pleated filter, and at least 50cfm of air movement.
The makita inlet is the opposite size. The wands will work on each other's vac but inverted. Thx for the comment!

Have had the first/brushless model for several years. Was adding a vac to our other van, so I wanted to see the differences. And now I’ve actually switched to the makita stick vac with cyclonic chamber in my van. 95% of Sheetrock dust gets caught in cylclonic chamber and not in the filter.
My friend had told me about this video last year I forgot the comment on it I have used your idea of my vacuum works like a champ it's not as powerful as what I saw the new one that replaces the r860902 for $59.00

No. The new $49 has a brushed motor. The older model is brushless. Thx

@@naiusany I'm keeping the original, brushless model on the van. I tried the new one for a couple of weeks. I twisted the canister off by accident 3 times. I'm keeping it in the workshop for small jobs around the house, but not for everyday work . Thx.
Solid video. My recommendation would be to get a tripod of some sort the body sway at the end of the video is not ideal. You can get cheap ones like the Guerilla Tripod that can hold a hearty camera. Also, do a decibel test on these tools as it would be a solid aspect to add-in.

Good video. I wanted to see this comparison. I have a Black and Decker hand vacuum, and I have the battery Ridgid platform so I thought about buying the Ridgid vacuum. I thought that the old Ridgid vacuum is loud, and the new one is the same, I better keep the Black And Black hands vacuum and buy another tool from Ridgid like the new Blower. Can you make a comparison of the job site blowers?

Yes, but they don’t last long. Maybe 5 -7 minutes of continuous use. Better to spot clean if you only have 2 ah batteries. I use the 4 ah most of the time to clean up after our tv installs.
Old brushless was rated as wet/dry. That’s the biggest reason I’d want to purchase one of those before they sell out. Has anyone ever tested wet capabilities of the brushless?
Haven't tried it on anything wet. Workshopaddicts review from 3 years ago sucked up water. It did it, maybe if you spilled a drink or something small.

I have the older model, and it does clog up real quick. Never thought about not using the prefilter, as I assumed the problem was the main filter.
Both the pre filter and the main filter are washable on the old model (I know because I wash them both and neither falls apart or feels soggy or susceptible to water damage). Is the main filter on the new one washable?
And another quick question. Do you find any tangible difference between using a standard battery and an octane battery when using these vacuums? I know they aren't octane tools, but conflicting reports say octane makes a slight difference even in non octane tools.
The filters on the new vac are washable. The higher ah rated batteries don't seem to make the vac suck any harder, just last longer. Thx for the comment!

In Australia, the new model comes with the same head that's on the brushless, which makes it useless. The head on the Rigid new model is clearly superior. What a disappointment.
And you were talking on your video you are a guest far away from your mic but when the vacuums went the volume one up so high I had to turn down the volume then when you try to talk I had to turn up the volume trying to hear you attachments work on each other's vacuum alright you take care😷🍻🍺

I accidentally open that canister 1 more time and it's done... I do like the longer extension tube.
i own it and its not that powerful.
