Great job with preparation and execution. And your radio presence likely gave the controllers the sense they were working with someone who knew what she was doing.
"Glide slope? We don't need no steenkin glide slope!" Really nice job. At the end of the day, an airport is just an airport - with prep. Thanks for sharing!
I think I saw you taking off on 9C last week. I was the captain of a 757 and took off behind a cherokee..my copilot joked to the tower controller we needed 2 mins for wake turbulence lol. With all of the new runways at Ohare Im sure it was easy for them to sneak you in. Fly safe.
Thank you Alyssa, That was very informative and enjoyable to watch. My PPL is in progress. Have 74 hrs. I have flown out of the Bravo in Honolulu. I learned CRAFT very quickly. Safe travels
Sweet! Great video and the tour of the tower had to be cool as well. Yes, ORD is huge. Heck it's been huge for decades. Your prep shows in how collected you came across. Have to admit I was peeking out the window on approach trying to figure out where you were on the journey. Some landmarks are dead giveaways (Fermilab, I-90, etc). Glad it went well and you had a happy birthday. Congrats!
Very cool! And honestly didn't look as scary as I would have thought. I like the little cheat sheet you made. Also, the guy on unicom cracks me up. Very jovial greeting 😂
3:00 nice to hear that the old speak and spell still has a job. 13:30 I like that your single-use cheat sheet is LAMINATED 21:00 nice controller. you'd said you got progressive but he's really helpful. and wowwww the taxi diagram in foreflight is .. busy. what an epic adventure!
Have been into KORD a dozen times in everything from a 172 to our Baron , Aztec, and a C-210. Back in the day....they had a runway 18-36 next to the VOR. Even if the wind was 360/20, you were landing 18, and going out 36 towards KPWK. Ha. To taxi over the 190 access road over to the old 32R was fun! The taxiways had cool names like " Lake shore drive". Before the United terminal was built, the old Butler aviation was in that area, and it cost $5 to land and park...then just walk over to the terminals to get your passengers. It was best to go in at night after rush hour. My IFR flight school at Madison Wisconsin required a cross country into KORD. We just filed DCT JVL, DCT OBK, Direct...you usually were given 22R, or if it was VFR, the old runway 18. Fun days!
This is awesome. Can someone explain to me what ground was saying when he was having you contact the FBO? I was expecting a frequency but heard letters.
Yeah he was referring to the two taxiway entries into the signature ramp. On the west side is TT (tango-tango) and on the east side is PP (pappa-pappa). Basically I had to call to signature and ask them which one to enter on but tower was basically saying from his perspective, either entry was fine. SIDE NOTE: looking at the updated diagram of KORD it looks like they've now just made PP part of taxiway B.
Congratulations! This was a great accomplishment and a great video. Thanks for all the work in putting it together. It will be a great guide for someone else who wants to do something similar. (The tower tour sounds cool too.)
The biggest thing is just being prepared. The folks in the tower told me they'll get some people who come in and just have no idea what is going on. That's when trouble begins.
I'm sure you can and will! It's just about preparation. Just have to realize there's a lot of complexity in both traffic flows and the airport itself. And as long as you work with ATC rather than come in "unannounced" they're happy to help make it a successful experience.
Wow. That takes guts! I've flown into one Class C and through a Class B since getting my PPL in April. It all went fine, but I never would have thought to attempt a landing at something like KORD until I was FAR more experienced. You demonstrated that it isn't the quantity of hours (I'm curious how many hours you have? I only have about 70), but good training, preparation, and determination that gets the job done. I will be watching your preparation and departure videos as well for tips, but other than contacting TMU for coordination, it seemed pretty straightforward! . Thanks for sharing!
At the time of this flight in June I had around 250 total hours. I am right at 400 now. Thanks and I do happen to agree, the preparation and types of flying I had been doing up to this point are what helped make it work.
@@AlyssaM_InfoSec Awesome, thanks! May I also ask about your iPads? I'm guessing that's an iPad mini on your yoke with an Apple pencil, and some other kind of iPad suctioned on the passenger side? I'm still trying to figure out my own setup. 😁
Well that's always a "it depends" question but at ORD for fuel, landing & parking fees, etc. it was just shy of $500. Of course I still had to burn fuel to get home and all jazz but you get the idea.
Great video Alyssa! I had a long comment going and was set to post it when the video ended and my comment disappeared, oh well. I love that the controllers were so welcoming and, I’d go as far as to say appreciative of your professionalism on the radio with crisp and timely read backs. I think they were as impressed with you as you were with them. One question, when you got the “straight in 9L” do you remember how far out you were? Thanks in advance, Papa Tango
Yeah I just looked it up in the Foreflight, I was over the town of Barrington which is about 18 miles Northwest of KORD when he cleared me for the straight in approach.
Yep funny thing is I've heard it's actually harder to get into Midway in a GA aircraft than O'Hare :) I don't know how true that is but one of these days I'll try it.
Bravo! (pun intended)
Wow! Amazing work, congratulations, well done.
Great job with preparation and execution. And your radio presence likely gave the controllers the sense they were working with someone who knew what she was doing.
Thanks, I appreciate that. I felt really confident on the radios. It felt good.
It’s always great to get clear through Class Bravo Airspace
Great flying and confidence, well done.

Very glad to hear that 757s are still around. They are beautiful aircraft!

We all were just at KORD on our way home from Wyoming and what a busy airport and I’m proud of you flying into there! Cheers
Fun and just shows that small GA planes can do it all with some planning.
Very cool! :)
Great job! Really enjoyed the video and your professionalism.
Thank you I appreciate it. Last thing I wanted to do was go bombing into a place like O'Hare and make amateurish mistakes.
