1:23 THIS is why Emma Stone got the Oscar that year. Look at all her emotions in 10 seconds. She says, "Maybe I'm not good enough" five times and each time is a totally different emotion.
First one: "Maybe I'm not good enough. - Maybe that's the truth.
Second: "No...maybe I'm not." She's actually questioning it. She's almost joking about it.
Third: Totally believing the words. She's accepting it.
Fourth: She's defending the idea now. She starts breaking down just living in that reality for a second.
Last time: She doesn't even say the words. She just breaks down thinking about the new reality before going on a monologue to try to justify it.
Sebastian fights through all of her defense mechanisms for HER dream. Sometimes, the difference truly is just to have someone there to tell you that you can do it and demand that you do.

I think its so appropriate to stay on Emma in this scene where they did. Even when Ryan is talking they dont cut back and forth when Emma is having her moment like some directors might. they stay with her and show her full range of emotion. It gives the full display of the actors range and i think one of the main reasons she got so much praise for the film. you sit in it. you stay with it. you see it like you have a million times in your own arguments or your own times when you talked a friend through a tough time. you know that look you know that feeling and sitting there watching it you feel it. and it feels real and raw and she nailed it.

Impossible to take eyes off this singular film or stop listening to it's brilliant music. "La La Land" is that plate of trauma and piece of art which plays the heart and throws it into abyss, lightyears away. Saw it years back and I come back to the songs sometimes, but not the film. Never again.

It would've far more interesting if Seb ended up agreeing with Mia that perhaps she isn't good enough to pursue an acting career - arguably the most competitive career in the arts. It just makes it more realistic, but also would engender a more nuanced take on the whole 'make your dreams come true" trope that is almost incessantly played out in Hollywood films. Imagine if this scene played out with Seb saying "you're right, maybe you're not good enough, but that's ok, you can still do what you love", and then Mia doesn't get the part, but pursues acting in her play and finds joy and fulfilment in doing so. How many of us can relate to this? How many of us can attest to not achieving our childhood dreams as we imagined them (fame, success, fortune, etc.) but had to adjust our goals slightly. I just think it would've been more poignant for Mia to find true joy, not in success, but in persisting with the play and managing her expectations.
