I love the subtlety of him not being able to make eye contact with her while he's lying about it being his dream and what he wanted.
I thought he was blind lmao
He wasn't lying. SHE was his dream. The band, the club, whatever, that all came second. She listened but she didn't hear what he was saying. He did it all for her because "this" (her) was his dream. Life and love are about compromise and sacrifice; you can't have it all (at once). We choose our priorities. He chose her. He didn't sacrifice his dream of owning a jazz club because he was settling, he sacrificed it because he decided she, what they had, what he had with her, was more important.
He prioritized the relationship, she didn't: "Of course I wanted you to have a steady job so you could take care of YOURself in YOUR life..." (no "we"/"our").
She could have stayed; they could have talked it out. He obviously wanted to FIGHT for her. But she left without even saying goodbye, so think about how he must have felt. He gave up A dream for her because he decided she/they mattered more, and instead of them celebrating or being happy about that choice, she scolded him, they fought, he gets up for a second and comes back and she's just gone. He must have felt like such an idiot.
@@lifesunviktoriusson-kidukn6913 THANK YOU
he was passing gas. did you see how big a piece of chicken he was eating? "chicken fumes" was his alternative club name
@@lifesunviktoriusson-kidukn6913but he didn’t communicate that to her at all. All she saw was that he was rejecting his lifelong dream. And the fact that his dream was something very unconventional added to her worry; she thought he’d given in to either peer pressure or simple despair that nobody would appreciate his efforts to revive jazz. She always admired that he went for what he really wanted and loved rather than try to conform; that’s how they first met, when he rejected conventional Christmas tunes to play a tune that he wanted, the very tune that drew her to him. And now especially when he says “to have a steady job,” she’s afraid he’s essentially betraying himself by conforming to this band for the sake of finances, when he already has enough paychecks to start the club like he always wanted. This is a very legitimate fear on her part. It’s out of love for him that she expresses her concern; she doesn’t want him to change himself to be practical. He always encouraged her to just follow her heart and now she’s encouraging him to do the same. And she’s proven right in the end; ultimately he does reject the band and follow and achieve his jazz dream, which he may not have done if she hadn’t steered him back in the right direction.
The way he's constantly looking down and couldn't make sincere eye contact made it seem like he's talking more to himself than Mia, convincing himself 'this is my dream now' and that nuance on his part whenever he tries to counter Mia's argument gave us viewers a glimpse about his internal conflict.
@@Panxoge i mean, the director must've made it that way for a reason. sebastian couldn't maintain an eye contact because he's not being honest, the opposite of mia in this scene.
and then he can make an eye contact when he finally say what he feels that he thinks she likes when he's on the bottom because it makes her feel better about herself. that's the only time he's being honest and he can make eye contact.
@FcoGabler Yeah and what's your interpretation, Skipper?
he needs money to start the club, the band and touring gets him the club. not to mention exposure which can help him later to draw in crowds to his club. mia has no concept of money apparently. when things get tough , she bails back to a comfortable suburban life in Nevada. she has a safety net, he doesn't.
Mia comes off as naive. Seb seems to have some grounding in reality.
Feels like self sabotage also, he knows what he’s saying is wrong within himself but still keeps going

Most of us had it. Being unemployed for a long time and finally getting a job really makes you feel the world is pressing on you, including your loved ones, eventhough all they want is just you being happy in whatever you do. Damn this movie is as real as reality can be
Does everyone get to find their job that makes them happy though? At the end of the day you have to be able to support yourself. Dreams are great, but it seems statistically unlikely that everyone finds their calling. Or even has one to begin with
@@VideoGuy232 have to work harder. vast majority of people dont do anything after 5pm.
This is the most real and most honest part of their entire relationship, and I think the best part of the movie. It exposes the male and female ego in a relationship so succinctly.
very interesting
Its true, some adults have a hard time experiencing "love at first sight". Especially for teenagers too, however, don't exactly know how to handle a REAL situation during a REAL relationship.
They don't know what they both desire; which makes a complex relationship an even harder decision to leave and move on.
I'm not saying there's plenty of fish in the sea, or never let him or her go. All I'm saying is this: its not the end of the world.
When a person loves you as a person or sees what makes them fascinate about YOU, you'll get an opportunity to find what real true love is.
I'm curious what you define as the male and female egos. Not that I want to call you out or something. I am genuinely curious.
Never heard the word "succinctly" before. LOL! Learned it now though.
@@awsone100 you still never got ur definition damn bro
2:46 I know actors are supposed to know how to cry or whatever, but to MAKE IT genuinely look like you've got tears begging to fall from your eyes, but managing to hold it in??
Emma Stone👏🏼
its all about "in the moment" acting. to truly have that affect you have to convince yourself you are that character in that situation. some people mistake it as trying to force tears out but no one sane ever forces their tears out, they just come out and u try to stop them from doing so. by convincing yourself you are that emotional, it creates that natural affect of trying to hold in your tears and not being able to do so.
She's a great actress. Not very pretty though.
Actors need to reach to a place that makes them cry. Sometimes they need to prepare. Watch 'Shopgirl' with Claire Danes. Cast and crew were concerned about her in the crying scene, she seemed very very troubled. But a great crying scene. Great film, actually.
Guys, GUYS, the director was under the table, twisting her big toe, till SHE CRYS, it's an old trick.
@@SuperChuckRaney Silly. I've worked with a lot of actors. It's very possible.
I just made the connection between Gosling's "it's conflict and it's compromise and it's very very exciting" speech about jazz to their actual relationship. Interesting that the jazz music ends right as the exciting "conflict and compromise of the scene does. Between that, the long stretches of silence, and the slower editing, the moment suddenly feels so fragile and painful. And then the beeping comes in and we switch from a stable camera to handheld. God, this is such a well-crafted scene.
I love Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. But together, they have great chemistry.
They are both fab actors but I detected zero chemistry.
Well their both Scorpios.
I wonder who’s gonna win for Emma stone
Andrew Garfield or Ryan gosling
I really like how Sebastian has now put the jazz in the background, the same thing he complained abt earlier in The film, showing how he’s changed from the beginning
And that’s exactly what Mia’s pointing out. I don’t get why people seem to be against her in this scene. She doesn’t want him to betray his own values for the sake of practicality; she’s holding onto idealism and expressing her faith in him that he can achieve his dream. And ultimately she’s proven right when he realizes he is indeed unhappy with the band, quits, and opens his dream club.

Agreed. “I do; I just didn’t think that you did.” His preference matters more than hers, because it’s his future they’re talking about. That’s a great sign that she truly loves him.
Woah, I seriously thought my smoke alarm was going off.
The interesting thing, Ryan had almost the same conversation in Blue valentine but there the issue was he had no ambition but talent. Now he is on a way definitely but girlfriend thinks he does not follow his dreams.
I don't know these conversations about the careers are so hard to touch, especially in a relationship.
Watched that movie a few weeks ago it was hard to see him like that
See, here's the thing. My dad is a lifelong jazz enthusiast, and he told me the story about Charlie Parker and the 'yardbird' long before this movie was even released so I got the reference but he and I both got what was wrong about calling a jazz-club 'Chicken on a Stick' (not so much that not that many people may get the reference to Charlie Parker, but that it sounds stupid and not even faintly jazz-like, he's making it sound like liking chicken is what's most memorable about Parker, and verges on building on the stereotype that all African-Americans ie the people who created all true forms of jazz, blues, and soul like chicken). He and I both love learning and then teaching other people about jazz but when someone says 'I don't like jazz' to us we'd rather ask 'Well what do you mean by jazz, there's lots of different forms of it?' rather than force them to go to a club. My dad is a music snob - the whole family are music snobs - but he can appreciate other good music styles and knows that there's other good music in the world, and despite his faults (which he has just like everyone else), he doesn't act like music is the only decent job in the world, doesn't take his problems out on everyone else, and is no-where near as much of an arrogant jerk as Seb is.
I don't like jazz either.

Dream can be fulfilled in the future if you have enough money, but without money dream will be dream! She should have stayed with him and support him instead of fighting.
“Do you like the music you’re playing?” She really shows how much she loves him here. She can’t bear the thought that he’s running away from what he’s passionate about and resigning himself to a lifetime of doing something he doesn’t truly enjoy. It’s because she points this out that he realizes he’s on the verge of essentially betraying himself and thus he quits the band and pursues his true desires. And later, he does the same thing for her when he talks her into attending the audition that begins her career. They only want the best for each other. ❤

Was definitely a victim of woke Hollywood. This movie is a masterpiece.
yeah yeah this is 3 years later but how is la la land "underated"
@@chaupham7954 I think it's underrated. If you can make a film and get a bunch of people who thought they didn't like musicals to not only enjoy a musical but also list it as one of their favorite films, its definitely underrated. Its hard to make a film that IMDB rates 8.0 or higher, and this one sits right at an 8.0 which I still think is lower than it should be as again there wasn't a huge demand for live action musicals back in 2016 as coincidently kind of like the movie says about jazz, it had its time but its over now. Picking an unpopular genre and making a historical cinematic masterpiece is no easy feat.
Ah, damn. Looks like the relationship is burnt.
All of this could've been avoided if Mia had her phone call in another room 😪
This is such a dumb argument. He needs to tour with the band for a couple years, build money to safely open his club without going bankrupt and having to live gig to gig. Such an easy decision honestly. Ride it out a few years then open your club. He’d be happier long term.
Yeah, he could have explained that or she could have understood that without him explaining it. It seemed like a fight about the time of commitment it was going to be.
To be real, most arguments are dumb. It's the moment's heat and madness.
That's why I don't want to like this movie but I do. It's too real. I know 90% of the arguments I've experienced in a relationship are like this. To an outsider totally stupid.

My precious!
This scene was done in Friends tv series between Ross and Rachel just before their break up.
That’s not the impression I got
The mistake they made that so many movies seem to be encouraging these days is that, before getting married, they're living together and expecting no consequences for that. If you're not ready to be married, why are you sleeping together? If you don't have a stable job then you can't support yourselves or a family, and you're always stressing and running around and growing apart and marriage becomes the last thing on your mind, and you're always trying to see each other when you're both busy. Marriage isn't just about falling in love, it's not about your feelings, it's about commitment and responsibility and growth and becoming better people and sharing your love with new life. I mean, as she said ''Here's to the mess we make.'' They shared something that only a married couple should share, and then they didn't even end up together. You break each other when you do that, how can you share anything or trust each other in that kind of relationship with no commitment?
It takes sacrifice. The man and woman sacrifice their time, energy and talents for the family to grow

Mia is the one being unreasonable here.
The problem here is communication. He doesn’t communicate that he’s afraid of not being able to provide for her. She doesn’t communicate that her true concern is that he will betray himself by giving up on his dream and one day regret it and be heartbroken. He wants a steady income for them and she wants him to do what truly makes him happy. You often hear women today bemoaning how they can’t find good men who are reliable and responsible and wants to commit. @@scottslotterbeck3796 Except the problem is that she never asked him to? It was infact him overhearing a c onversation with her mother and misunderstanding, hence why he took the job for some income ? She always wanted him to follow his passions.
I think she has fair concerns here. She knows her husband is unhappy at his job, and so she confronts him about it. Men often neglect their feelings and personal problems because they think they should be above them, but this mindset becomes corrosive, making themselves miserable, followed by the people around them. She was really just looking out for him in this scene.
And this discussion going on in this comment thread is exactly the argument they are having on screen, which is a testament to how real this scene is.

@@prahaladadharsh9766worrying about providing for her was his initial motive, but now a lot of time has passed since then, and he’s now made a commitment that will prevent him from having the time to open his club. He’s giving in to peer pressure, essentially, and sticking with the well-paying job rather than focusing on what he really wants to do. And that’s the point she’s making here. When she says he’s giving up his dream, he doesn’t deny it. He says “this is THE dream” which is not the same thing as “MY dream,” as she points out. Plus he’s not even looking her in the eye when he says “this is the dream” because he can’t lie to her face. He’s gotten so worried about providing for them that he’s leaving his jazz club dream in the rear view mirror. And she’s concerned because she knows if he gives up his dream, he’ll always regret it and become bitter. It’s no different from him having the same concerns about her and making similar arguments as to why she needs to go to that audition later.

Damien Chazelle must have had his heart broken by an actress. This is his revenge.
Because her dream wasn’t true love. It was being an actress. The point of the film is dreams require sacrifices, and in the end much like an opener, it’s difficult to let go and follow your passions, but at least all & all, they had a good time:

It’s almost like this scene was created to show off that in real life relationships can be more than just notebook chemistry and that these sorts of things can drive a relationship apart.
A terrible conversation. No mutual understanding whatsoever. Typical Hollywood.
Pretty realistic. Couples fight each others but nowadays, they don't fight for their love.
That was...too close for comfort & extremely well done.
